The

Vol. 20 No. 6 June 2018

Here I Am, Lord

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said,

“Here am I; send me!” (Isa 6:8)

God’s “call” to Isaiah is one of many call stories we read about in the Bible, and I love them all. God

whispers a name and the response is always the same, “Here I am, Lord.” From generation to generation, God

calls upon us. Whether it be a gentle whisper, tap on the shoulder, or an experience with the divine that is more

extreme, each of us has been called to serve our Lord. Each of us has been granted gifts of the Spirit that are

unique and worthy of our calling.

June is a special month for our church as we celebrate those who have been called by God, and elected

by you the congregation, to lead us into the future as we continue to serve Christ, South Lyon, and abroad. Be

sure to join us on Sunday, June 10th, as we ordain our new officers, and install those who are coming back for

a second term. To the Session, we welcome and give thanks to Mary Lloyd and Marilyn Harrington for their

willingness and dedication to the church.

I am especially excited to welcome our first youth Deacon since I have been serving FPC, Lily

Mueller. Lily is sixteen and is wrapping up her sophomore year at South Lyon High School. Lily is active on

the high school ski team, and for the second year in a row has been invited to compete at the State Track and

Field Finals. You will also find Lily in the pulpit frequently serving as our worship liturgist.

Returning to Session for a second term are Bob Cue and Barbara Clark Greene, to the Board of Dea-

cons, Dorcas Cue. I also want to offer a heart-felt thank you to those whose terms have expired. From Session,

Dean Beckstein, Pete Eichinger and Bob Weinburger; and from the Deacons, Tina Van Ochten.

Please continue to pray for the leadership of our church, especially our Elders and Deacons. They are

an awesome crew whose love for the Lord is second to none. They will certainly have their work cut out for

them this year as they seek new ways to serve Christ through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Again, please be sure to join us and celebrate on Sunday, June 10th.

With Peace and Grace,

Pastor Mike

June 25 - June 29, 9:00 a.m. - noon

It’s that time of year again. Time for VBS. This year’s theme is Roll-

ing River Rampage: Experience the Ride of a Lifetime with God!

Thank you Jeanette Asiala for all of your hard work putting together

VBS this year. A special “thank you” goes out to Pastor Jo for her

help in past years and turning over VBS to Jeanette. There is a lot to

learn and a lot to do to make VBS successful.

Our supplies for the kids crafts have all been purchased. Thank you

everyone for your craft donations.

Now on to the food portion... This year Dorothy Tennant and Joyce Johnson are taking on the

task of purchasing the food for VBS. Please see the green box marked VBS donations on the round ta-

ble outside of the Sanctuary. Any and all monetary donations will be accepted. Just deposit in the green

box. This will ensure that all VBS kids have food and snacks for the entire week. We thank all of the

members of FPC for your donations and your volunteering. We couldn’t do it without all of you.

A couple more items are needed to help decorate the Sanctuary.

1. A small 2-3 person pop-up tent.

2. A canoe or kayak

We need these items by Sunday, June 24, and they can be taken home the following Sunday after wor-

ship. If you are willing to lend us these items, please contact either Jeanette or Pastor Mike. Thank

you!!!

you can. Enjoy a fun night out with friends.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL!!!

tional Life will celebrate your birthday again.

celebrate Birthday Sunday! This party is for everyone re-

gardless of age! From 1 to 101.

easy. Take your age and donate that amount to the church. Special envelopes will be available at church,

or contact the church office to give electronically. It’s been a couple of years since we did this offering,

so we hope you will choose to participate. Thank you for your generosity!

From your Deacons...

A huge thank-you goes out to all who contributed to the Deacon’s Easter Ham mission!

Through your donations, we were able to supply several local families with a lovely Easter

dinner ham. The giving hearts of this congregation continue to provide for our neighbors

who are in need. Stay tuned for upcoming Deacon missions!!

Blessings of appreciation are sent out to Tina Van Ochten for her service as a Deacon.

After a three-year term, Tina’s tenure has come to a close. Lily Mueller will begin her one-

year term as a Youth Deacon in June, and we look forward to Lily’s contribu-

tions!

We have several upcoming events that partner our congregation with the

community…. South Lyon Cruise In – the 4th Wednesday of each month,

May through September. VBS is back beginning Monday, June 25th. And

don’t forget the Farmer’s Market on Saturdays!

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP

Grief support groups offer companionship and understanding from others who

have experienced a similar loss, and are experiencing the similar challenges that

living with grief brings. In a culture that often avoids talking about loss, support

groups give you the opportunity to share your story openly and guilt-free. You

also have the opportunity to hear the stories of others and talk about coping day-

to-day, as well as on the most difficult days of our grief journeys.

FPC’s Grief Support Group meets on the 3rd Monday of the month at 10:00 a.m. Join us on Monday, June

18 at the Corner Café at the corner of Lafayette and Lake St.

June 2018 Lake Street Cruise In

Join us for the June Lake Street Cruise In on Wednesday, June

27th from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. (it’s always the 4th Wednesday

of the month) and see for yourself why so many residents, even

non-residents come to the downtown area to peruse the old

classic cars, listen to the Oldies music, and eat hot dogs and

popcorn.

Don’t forget to stop by FPC’s food tent and sample some of our

goodies. We’ve been told we have the best hot dogs in town.

We didn’t forget to include the kiddos. We will have a craft

table for the kids to enjoy. Volunteers are needed to staff the

Craft table.

Also, consider volunteering to help serve hot dogs and other refreshments. Help is always appreciated!

FOR … and ABOUT SOUTH LYON FIRST PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN!

MAY 2018

Summer time arrived, think we missed Spring! But enjoying the warmth and flowers that are popping out daily.

June 13 will be our last get together until Fall, so we hope to have several women join us especially for our lunch. Note the time is 12:30 this month at Aubree’s.

Women’s Bible Study will meet Wednesday, June 13 at 11:00 a.m. in the li-brary. We are on our final lesson for this year’s study Cloud of Witnesses “In Community with All the Saints”.

The theme has been that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses from the past and present who shows us how to live in faith and supports us in that faithful living. Simply put, by the “saints”, that the New Testament refers to as “every follower…every member of the community of faith”. It is by “loving

and serving the saints” and “imitating the saints” that we come “close to Christ and our heritage of faith”.

It is also by loving and serving them that we are loved and served and it is by imitating them that we learn “how best to live a life of faith”.

All Women are invited …won’t you consider coming and studying God’s word with us as we explore and look for ways that God is calling us! We’d love to have you join us!

There will be a meeting of the Presbyterian Women Executive Board June 13 at 11:45 immediately following Bible study to discuss upcoming events for SL Presbyterian Women.

The Women of First Presbyterian Church will be going out to lunch on Wednesday, June 13 at 12:30 p.m. Meet at the church and we will car pool to Aubree’s or you can just meet us there. Enjoy getting to know the women of FPC and have fun conversation! Pastor Mike might even join us for our final lunch until September.

Our Purpose: Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to nurture our faith though prayer and Bible study, to support the mission of the church worldwide, to work for jus-tice and peace, and to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.

MISSION & OUTREACH

Active Faith (AF): June donations are crackers and July are Instant oatmeal. The Presbytery is encouraging all congregations to donate cold cereal to sup-ply children with a meal they can prepare for themselves during the summer months. Thus far we have donated 32 pounds; at an average of 13 ounces per box, that is 40 boxes! Great job and thank you.

The 21st Annual Golf Outing will be Monday July 16 at the Links at Whitmore Lake. Registration forms will be posted on the Mission & Outreach Bulletin Board if you are interested.

American Red Cross: Our next blood drive will in August, so eat your spinach. If you are unable to donate perhaps you can spare some time to help Bob with sign-ins or watching the treats table.

Everyone Eats (E1E): Call me crazy but I’d like to try something different this summer/fall: preparing fresh vegetables from our gardens. In August, could I get 50 8 inch cucumbers (length, not diameter) and 400 cherry toma-toes? In September, 50 8 to10 inch zucchini and 3-5 pounds of tomatoes? Discuss amongst yourselves and let me know.

The summer regular meals are on Wednesday 20 June and 18 July. Check the weekly calen-dar in the bulletin for a cooking activity the Tuesday before the meal. Sign up sheet by the Mission bulletin board. Gathering time is 9am, return is 2pm.

On 16 May, we fed 115 persons a meal of chicken pasta salad, green salad, cookies, and juice with the help of Jefferson Avenue PC(USA).

On 6 May after the Worship Service, the fundraiser for E1E served 35 people with the help of 4 Boy Scouts from Troop 38. Freewill donations collected raised $290. Thank you for your sup-port in feeding the stranger.

Kids Hope USA (KHUSA): As we wind up this year at Dolsen with our children, please pray for the program over the summer break. We need to expand and to do so we need more mentors, prayer partners, and substitutes. We plant the seeds, never knowing the harvest but trusting God.

We are collecting Box Tops for Education, Labels for Education, Campbell Soup labels, and Aunt Millie’s bread labels. If you are not donating these to other projects, we would be grateful to receive them. Place them in the receptacle by the M&O bulletin board.

Special Offerings: The special offering collected on Pentecost goes to support Camperships for the tutored students at Active Faith. This year’s offering was $415.00.

Warming Shelter: The committee is looking into providing a daytime shelter for people ex-periencing power outage from storms of any season. If you have experience or knowledge of this type of activity, please share with a committee member or come to the next meeting.

World Wide Knit In Public Day: On the front lawn, from 1 to 4 in the afternoon, all knitters and crocheters are invited to (gasp!) knit in PUBLIC!! Neutral color scarves will be made to send to Operation Gratitude. This group provide care/gift packages to service members. Register in advance at wwkipday.com, the KIP is First Knit Together, South Lyon, MI.

The Mission & Outreach committee meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 10:30am in the Library. Anyone interested in using their talents and influence, please join us, no RSVP needed. EXCEPT in June and July use this time to pray in place for the mission of this congregation.

A Few Notes From the Music Department

SUMMER MUSIC

Summer is here, which means it is time for the choir to take a well-deserved break! During this time, we invite

you to share your talent on a Sunday morning during worship. Perhaps you would like to sing, or play an in-

strument. Do you have a family member that might like to play for us as well? There is a sign-up sheet outside

the Sanctuary, or contact our Music Director, Sally Messner.

HYMN SING SUNDAY

We had so much fun at our last hymn sing in February that we are going to do it again on Sunday, June 24th!

Call out your favorite hymn and we will sing it during worship. We heard through the grape vine that there

were a couple of people that did not get called upon, so this time we invite you to write down your hymn selec-

tion and either place it in the offering plate on a Sunday leading up to the hymn sing, or place it in Sally’s

mailbox, and we’ll be sure to include it.

SUNDAY SUMMER PICK-UP CHOIR, JULY 8th

Have you thought about singing with us but want to try it out first? July 8th would be the perfect time! All

singers — even if you just sing alone in your car — are invited to join us at 10:00 a.m. for a very brief rehears-

al of a simple, elegant anthem to prepare for the service that day. Please join us!
