ATHLETICS CARNIVAL FOR KINDERGARTEN AND YEAR ONE

Our Education Week celebration of NSW Public Education con-tinued with our annual Athletics Carnivals. Students in Years 2 to 6 walked down to King George Oval for track and field events. Despite the challenging weather conditions everyone competed and cheered with great enthusiasm. There was lots of evidence of good sportsmanship and encouragement. Thank you to our parent helpers who assisted with events and to the Year 6 par-ents who ran the cake stall to raise funds for the Year 6 farewell. Students who competed successfully went on to represent the school at the Balmain Zone competition on Thursday 15 August.

Kindergarten and Year 1 participated in their own mini Athletics Carnival at school. Students competed in running races and re-lays in their colours houses. They also had fun playing a range of tabloid activities including ball games, sack races and the egg and spoon competition. Despite the windy conditions the stu-dents enjoyed a fun filled carnival and displayed great sports-manship as they cheered each other on.

I would like to acknowledge Claire Rolland and Alden Kwok for their excellent organisation of the 2—6 Carnival and the Kinder and Year 1 teachers led by Carlie Punch and Amy Horton.

P & C TRIVIA NIGHT Saturday 31 August in the school hall.

2019 BOOK WEEK PARADE

The annual Rozelle Public School Book Parade was held in beauti-ful sunshine last Friday to cele-brate Book Week. As always it was a happy, creative community celebration of books and reading. Parents and other community members lined Darling St to cheer us along. A great deal of thought and effort was apparent in the variety of book character costumes worn by students and staff. We were even featured on TV. Thank you to Leichhardt Lo-cal Area Command for providing five police officers to direct traffic and keep our students safe and to our Librarian Carol Sheppard for her thorough organisation.

The Book Week celebrations this year include a performance for K—2 students by Perform! Educa-tion entitled Big Dreams which featured a selection of the Children’s Book Council 2019 shortlisted books while teaching students not be discouraged by negative messages in order to follow their heart’s desire.

The award winning author Mark Greenwood will be visiting the school on Tuesday 27th August to talk about history and "breathing life into legends" to students in Years 3 - 6.

This year's Great Book Swap Sale will be held on Tuesday 3rd September where we set up a book shop in the Gallery Space for students to purchase a donated book. The Great Book Swap is a fantas-tic way to celebrate reading locally, and raise much-needed funds for remote communities across Aus-tralia. This year, the Indigenous Literacy Founda-tion (ILF) hope to raise $350,000 to gift 35,000 new, carefully-chosen books to children who need them the most. The Library is currently stockpiling any children's books that you would like to donate for the Great Book Swap Sale!

On Friday 9th August, 13 members of the Stage 3 choir represented Rozelle PS at the Inner West Public Schools Arts Festival. The girls sang beautifully to open the proceedings at the official opening of the exhi-bition at Stirrup Gallery in Addison Road Community Centre. The students were invited to be part of this celebration of the Arts in Public Education highlighting a range of excellence in Visual Arts, Dramatic and Performing Arts. Well done to all the students involved and thank you to the parents who supported this event and came out on such a chilly night.

STAFFING ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TERM

As I previously advised, I will be relieving as Director, Educational Leadership for Parramatta Network of schools from Monday 19 August until the end of term. I will stay closely in touch with events at school and be attending a number of meetings and special occasions. For next week, until Angela Svinos returns, Julie Day will relieve as Principal and Heather Strachan as Deputy Principal. Danny O'Donnell will relieve as Assistant Principal responsible for Stage 2. Angela Svinos will return on Monday 26 August and will relieve as Principal and Julie Day will continue as Deputy Principal. Heather Strachan leaves us at the end of Week 8 to take two weeks' Long Service Leave before she takes up her appointment as Deputy Principal at Neutral Bay Public School. Heather has been a wonderful member of the Rozelle Public School community since 2006 and we will make sure we say a very heart felt farewell before she leaves us. Danny O'Donnell will relieve as As-sistant Principal for Stage 2 for the last two weeks of the term. Alison Cole will be on Long Service Leave until the end of the term and Vera O’Callaghan will be doing her Visual Arts Program.

NSW DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ENROLMENT POLICY

There has been considerable media coverage regarding the recently released revised Enrolment Policy. I would just like to clarify the situation for Rozelle Public School. For the last eight years we has only been able to accept enrolments of students living within our catchment area, unless they are siblings of students already enrolled or in exceptional circumstances. A boundary change in 2017 has had a positive impact on keeping enrolments manageable and has meant that we have been able to accommodate in area enrolments within our existing permanent class-rooms. We currently allow students to remain enrolled where families have moved only slightly out of area. These arrangements will continue.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SEVERAL OF OUT STUDENTS FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations to budding actress and Year 6 student Marli Williams who was selected by the Australian Institute for Performing Arts (AIPA) to represent the school as a performer in the Bris-bane Play Festival which was held last week. Congratulations to Year 6 student Rhys Olson-Keating who came 17th in the State for his age in the recent State Cross Country Carnival. Well done also to Macey Tanner-Black who went very close to being selected to represent the school at the State Carnival when she placed 7th at the Regional Carnival.

NOTIFYING OSHCLUB AND THE SCHOOL OF A CHANGE TO AFTERNOON ARRANGEMENTS

The school takes extremely seriously our duty of care to students. We hand K—2 students direct-ly to carers or OSHClub staff or other external providers. Students in Years 3 to 6 are dismissed to make their own way to OSHClub or to meet carers or walk home but class teachers are aware of each students’ arrangements. We have had a number of occasions recently where parents have failed to inform OSHClub that there child/children will not be attending in the afternoon, which has caused a great deal of worry to both OSHClub and school staff as we have tried to establish their whereabouts. Often we are unable to contact parents. Parents could you please ensure that you inform OSHClub if your child is not attending and also inform the school office of the change to arrangements. It would be very helpful if you could provide contact numbers for nannies or babysitters to the school of-fice and OSHClub.

LOST PROPERTY AND SCHOOL HATS

We have had a huge amount of lost property recently I think as students shed layers after the cold mornings give way to sunny lunch times. Teachers will try to assist students keep track of their belongings but could I also ask parents to continue their efforts to encourage students to take greater responsibility for their things and please ensure they are all named so that they can make their way back to the right person. Every student should wear a school hat for all outdoor activities. Students in K—4 should have a wide brimmed school hat. This can also be worn by students in Year 5 and 6 or they have the option of the school baseball hat.

PAINTING AND CLASSROOM REFURBISHMENT WORK TO COMMENCE

Work will commence next week on the next round of Programmed Maintenance Work. This will include painting of classrooms and corridors in A block and the replacement of sinks and cup-boards in the A block classroom. External windows and the main corridor in B Block will also be painted and the outside of the terrace house which houses Junior OOSH. The work will be care-fully staged to minimise disruption to students’ learning with quite a bit being done in the next school holidays.
