Week 5 Term 2 Friday 29 MAY 2020

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The Week runs from 27 May to 3 June every year. The theme this year is 'All In This Together'

All classes at Rozelle participated in teaching and learning activities to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and achievements and explore how each of us can con-tribute to achieving reconciliation. Tuesday 24th May was National Sorry Day and to remember and commemorate the mistreatment of the country's Indigenous peoples, as part of an on-going process of reconciliation between the Indige-nous peoples and the settler population classes have been engaging in authentic lessons around these themes, producing some wonderful presenta-tions, artworks, and poems.

Kindergarten were thrilled to take part in the National Simultaneous Story Telling of Chicken Divas this week. To prepare for this exciting event we made sculptures and paintings of our own Chicken Divas. We also wore fabulous Diva accessories to school to dress up for the broadcast. When Emma from the Wig-gles began to read the Chicken Divas, you could hear a pin drop - we were so absorbed in the story. After-wards we celebrated by doing the Chicken Dance - what a fun afternoon!

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY TELLING OF CHICKEN DIVAS THIS WEEK ACROSS ALL STAGES

Year 3 students in Bottlebrush deep in concentration learning how to measure in centimetres and millimetres during their Maths lesson.

We held our first ever virtual school whole school event on Wednesday 27 May to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the National Simultaneous Storytime. Each class zoomed in to see Emma Watkins (ex Yellow Wiggle) read Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas by Lucinda Gifford. We were also lucky to have Ms McLaughlin send us a greetings video from the desert outside of Alice Springs dressed as a diva!

Schools in Tanzania shut mid-April as a result of COVID-19, at the moment there is no set return date. So They Can switched very quickly into the mode of COIVD education and support for our communities. We partnered with our medical centre and ran sessions for each village, including the village-head, School head-teacher and three teachers on how to slow the spread of COVID. We set up and funded hand washing sta-tions in the Village, and engaged champion mothers to have hand washing stations outside their houses for anyone to use. Social distancing and isolation are very difficult when the community lives hand to mouth and needs to farm and go to the market daily. Education has assisted them develop new practices to keep healthy during this time. Our Sew Women Can social business in Kenya also moved swiftly into mask production, and we have sent hundreds of masks to our Tanzanian communities. We have developed home-learning packs for all chil-dren in Standard 4 and 7, the years of the national exam. Although we are not fans of teaching just to pass the exam, we realistically know that these children need to achieve a benchmark in order to pass to second-ary school, they will not get a second chance, so we are doing all we can to support them. We are also doing a fun little Dance Off promotion on Instagram, just to try and spread the So They Can word. Parents – you might like to post to help spread the word? If you want to get involved, here's how: Dance - Film yourself busting out your best dance moves to a song you love Post it on social media and tag @sotheycan with #SoTheyCanDanceOff (ideally with some commentary as to why this is important to you) Nominate - Nominate/challenge at least 5 friends to a dance off.
