WHEN THE SCHOOL BUS STOPS, YOU STOP!

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS

REMEMBER: When you see a school bus stopped with its red lights flashing, you must stop too. You stop whether the bus is oncoming, or you are behind the bus. When you see a bus with amber flashing lights, slow down and prepare to stop. The buss is preparing to stop or may be already stopped. Stay stopped until the bus moves on, or the driver signals that it is safe for you to proceed, by turning off the flashing lights (Some buses also have a stop sign that swings out from the bus o a digital display). Be aware of signs, school buses, playgrounds and other things that indicate that children could be close by.

UPDATE ON ROCKSLIDE IN BIG BAR, FRASER RIVER

A landslide that occurred north of Lillooet in late June has created a significant barrier to fish passage and is

presently blocking most of these same Chinook from migrating upriver to spawn. Only a small number of

spawning salmon have been able to get over and reach spawning grounds. The federal government has taken

emergency measures to prioritize the increased escapement of fish, and is exploring methods to repair the

damage done by the slide to do so. Species that may become affected by this event include Spring/Summer 5

-2 Chinook, Early Stuart Sockeye, Early Summer Sockeye and Summer Run Sockeye.

Challenges that remediation crews are facing include rapid flow conditions, migrating stocks, site accessibility,

unstable water levels and heavy river debris and silt. This incident may also impact FSC harvesting opportuni-

ties in-season, but the potential for permanent loss of these Chinook populations represents a great

threat to the livelihoods of all those who depend on salmon for sustenance and economic oppor-

tunity as well as every living thing that depends on these fish. The Natural Resources Department

will update the community as new information becomes available.
