This semester, the Illinois Leadership Center (ILC) is commemorating its 15th anniversary by counting down 15 reasons to celebrate the ILC. This week, we are highlighting the Leadership Certificate Program. The Leadership Certificate is currently one of the flagship programs for students at the Illinois Leadership Center. Created in November of 2002 with an initial cohort of 40 students, the Leadership Certificate gives students an opportunity to learn about leadership while facilitating opportunities to practice it. Students who enroll in the Leadership Certificate embark on a journey that requires hard work, perseverance, and critical reflection every step of the way. Students in this program attend i-Programs, complete coursework with a focus in leadership development, participate in co-curricular opportunities where they are actively practicing their leadership, work with a leadership coach who guides them on their journey, and then conclude their experience with the submission of a leadership portfolio. This combination of formal education and hands on application is working to help build better leaders; students in the Leadership Certificate show huge gains due to their participation! The spring 2017 completing cohort reported the following: 100% would recommend the experience to a friend 100% became more effective at building community 97% have a better understanding of themselves 95% felt the certificate helped prepare them for their future career While the data tells us students are making tremendous strides from their participation in the Leadership Certificate Program, true inspiration comes when reviewing a student’s final leadership portfolio. These documents tell the story of their experience in the way only an Illini Leader can. Take a moment to review Annika, Paige, and Leonardo’s portfolios. All of this would not be possible without the help of our Leadership Certificate Coaches. These faculty, staff, and alumni volunteers provide critical support to students as they work their way towards earning their certificate. Each student is paired with a personal coach who provides feedback, challenges them to grow, and help them to finish! This is one of the truly unique aspects of this program which differentiates our Leadership Certificate Program from others throughout the country. The first Leadership Certificate Completion Ceremony was held in May 2004 with 16 students completing. Since then, over 800 students have earned their Leadership Certificate and the program continues to grow. This past fall, 27 students completed with 169 new enrollees. With over 400 active enrollees, a program record, we are anticipating over 60 students to finish their certificate this spring!

The spring 2017 completing cohort reported the following:

• 100% would recommend the experience to a friend• 100% became more effective at building community• 97% have a better understanding of themselves• 95% felt the certificate helped prepare them for their future career

While the data tells us students are making tremendous strides from their participation in the Leadership Certificate Program, true inspiration comes when reviewing a student’s final leadership portfolio.
