Inside this issue
few months ago, a news release came down from
PBS that signaled an exciting start to the New Year for public television fans: the pairing of two of the
most popular series ever to air under the MASTERPIECE umbrella – Downton Abbey and Sherlock!
On January 5th, the first Sunday night of 2014, Downton returns for its fourth season on American television, and you can read about it – and see more images from the series – in our cover story on page 3. Needless to say, it’s the most eagerly anticipated program in many years, and I can’t wait to join the conversations as WHRo staffers dissect each episode.
Two weeks later, on January 19th, PBS adds Sherlock to the Sunday night lineup, immediately following Downton Abbey. Benedict Cumberbatch is enjoying tremendous success in American cinema, recently starring in The Fifth Estate, 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County. Returning as Holmes’ loyal (and longsuffering) aide, Dr. Watson, as Martin Freeman, also successful in the movies as Bilbo Baggins in both Hobbit films. Together, these two venture into the mind of the madman, Moriarty, and more – keeping us on the edge of our seats for eight episodes.
But that’s not all this first month of 2014 brings WHRo-TV viewers: on January 8th, Chasing Shackleton recreates legendary Irish explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition.
I’m particularly intrigued to see Salinger on January 21st, a profile of the famously reclusive authors. This program, American Masters’ 200th episode, features interviews with friends, colleagues and members of J. D. Salinger’s inner circle, who’ve never spoken on the record before. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Martin Sheen, Tom Wolfe, E.L. Doctorow, Gore Vidal and others talk about Salinger’s influence on their lives, their work and the broader culture.
January 29th brings a biography of Stephen Hawking, told in his own words. It’s an intimate and revealing look at the man who’s often called the greatest scientist living today. Hawking tells the story of a life’s journey from boyhood underachiever to PhD genius, from healthy oxford rowing team member to a prognosis of just two years to live, and surviving several close brushes with death.
It’s an incredible array of diverse and fascinating programming – and it happens in just the first month of 2014!
Bringing compelling fiction to life – profiling the fascinating figures of this or any century – and doing both with quality, candor and integrity: this is what public broadcasting is all about. This is the legacy of educational television. This is our promise to you, all throughout the year.
Happy 2014 – and happy viewing!

f you’re not up to date on Downton Abbey, you might want to skip this article.
But if you’re one of the Downtonians who’ve been waiting (patiently or not so) for the new season, here’s a teaser of what lies ahead for Lady Mary and the rest:
Creator Julian Fellowes explains, “We start Season 4 six months after Matthew’s death, and we’ve got to the point, not obviously where Mary has recovered or got over it in that way, but when it’s time for her to start getting back into gear.” Actress Michelle Dockery, who plays Mary, says, “She’s barely left the house in six months and she finds it very difficult to relate to, or have any sort of contact with the baby, because each time she looks at him, he reminds her of Matthew.” Look for help for Mary to come from unexpected places.
So things don’t stay dreary at Downton. The family is moving into the 1920s, and the world is changing all around them. As for
Mary, she’s beautiful, rich, and widowed, which opens the doors to plenty of possibilities for her. And not just for her…
But enough said. The Crawleys return on January 5th as MASTERPIECE once more invites us inside Downton Abbey!
33
She’s baaaack! The Dowager’s nemesis, Martha Levinson, played in full glorious vamp by the iconic Shirley macLaine!
There are several actors joining the cast to mix things up this year, notably Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG award-winner Paul Giamatti (John Adams, Sideways, Cinderella Man.) He’ll appear in the Season 4 finale, playing Cora’s playboy brother Harold. Giamatti joins other new cast members, including:
tom cullen as Lord Gillingham, an old family friend of the Crawleys who visits the family as a guest for a house party
Nigel harman as Green, a valet
dame harriet Walter as Lady Shackleton, an old friend of the Dowager
Joanna david in a guest role as the Duchess of Yeovil
Julian Ovenden as aristocrat Charles Blake
dame Kiri te Kanawa as a guest who sings in the house
Major Sponsorship of Downton Abbey made possible by: Atlantic Shores Retirement Community and Lions Bridge Financial Advisors

1964: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, January 14 • 8PM
It was the year of the Beatles and the Civil Rights Act; of the Gulf of Tonkin and Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign; the year that cities across the country erupted in violence and Americans tried to make sense of the Kennedy assassination. Based on The Last Innocent Year: America in 1964 by award-winning journalist Jon Margolis, this film follows some of the most prominent figures of the time — Lyndon B. Johnson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Barry Goldwater, Betty Friedan — and brings out from the shadows the actions of ordinary Americans whose frustrations, ambitions and anxieties began to turn the country onto a new and different course.

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Fifth Estate, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, The Office UK) return as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in three new episodes of the contemporary reinvention of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic, written and created by Steven Moffat (Dr. Who) and Mark Gatiss (Game of Thrones).
MONSTER TYPHOON NOVA Wednesday, January 22 • 9PM
It was the strongest cyclone to hit land in recorded history. on November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan -- what some are calling “the perfect storm” -- slammed into the Philippines, whipping the low-lying and densely-populated islands with 200 mile-per-hour winds and sending a two-story-high storm surge flooding into homes, schools, and hospitals. It wiped villages off the map and devastated cities, including the hard-hit provincial capital Tacloban. Estimates count more than 5,000 dead and millions homeless.
AMERICAN MASTERS’ 200th episode features interviews with 150 subjects, including J.D. Salinger’s friends, colleagues and members of his inner circle who have never spoken on the record before, as well as film footage, photographs and other material that has never been seen.

alling all creative young minds: the 2014 PBS Kids Writers Contest is officially kicking off this month! This contest
congratulates local students in grades K through 5 for writing and illustrating their own original stories, and cultivates a love for reading and writing in children through their imaginations.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 28th, so parents and teachers can begin planning now to incorporate the contest into lessons and activities. Correlated to the Virginia Standards of Learning, the contest meets the following writing SoL requirements: K.12; 1.13; 2.12; 3.9; 4.7 and 5.7.
Last year, we received over 350 entries from local children, and we’re hoping to top that this year! Stories can be fact or fiction, poetry or prose, and will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations. One first place and one honorable mention winner will be chosen from each grade level.
once the winning stories are chosen, the winners and their families will be invited to attend the WHRo Young Storytellers Awards Ceremony, where each child will be honored at a special reception and recorded in the WHRo television studio reading their winning entry. Winners will also receive cash prizes, goody bags and a DVD copy of themselves reading their story.
To access the rules and entry form and to view previous year’s winners, please visit education.whro.org/writerscontest

ince 2011, WHRo has been actively engaged in American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen, a national initiative to help local communities
find solutions to keep students in school and graduating on-time.
Last spring, WHRo was one of twelve stations across the country to host a Teacher Town Hall. over 100 local educators from twelve public school divisions came together to discuss major issues affecting graduation rates, and to share ideas about improving student achievement. The participants pointed to effective and engaged teachers, family involvement and high expectations for students as key ingredients for success – but all believed greater community involvement could improve outcomes.
Public media stations across the country are now hosting Community Town Halls to build upon the success of the Teacher Town Halls – bringing together business leaders, parents, students, intervention and faith-based organizations, and educators. The goal is to identify challenges students face beyond the classroom, and to further develop community-based solutions.
Now we’re inviting you to participate in Community Conversations, which will help guide and focus the Community Town Hall discussion to be held at WHRo on February 13th.
These Community Conversations are free and open to the public:
• Thursday, January 9th, 6 – 8:30 pm at Bethel Temple in Hampton
• Thursday, January 16th, 6 – 8:30 pm at WHRo in Norfolk
We all have a stake in our children’s future. Your insights are vital – please come and share your concerns, thoughts and ideas.
For more information, call or email Kelly Jackson at 757-889-9415 or [email protected].

A NEW OLD FAVORITE SAturdAy January 11 • WHro 90.3 FM
In 1950, the Metropolitan opera presented an English language version of “Die Fledermaus.” For an opera company that for years never offered opera in English, this production of the Strauss favorite was a step forward. on January 11, the Met introduces the network premiere of a new English language version – so save some champagne from New Year’s Eve and tune in to hear something new!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAVERGAL WedNeSdAy January 29 • WHro 90.3 FM
Havergal Brian may well be the most prolific British composer that most people have never heard of. Born January 29, 1876, he composed 32 symphonies - 21 of them after he turned 80. Although he never achieved the fame of some fellow British composers, his work is praised by many, notably the Havergal Brian Society – of which our own Raymond Jones is a member. Raymond will play Brian’s symphonies, including the monumental “Gothic,” on Connoisseur Classics on January 29th.
OUT OF THE BOX WHrV 89.5FM
Ten years ago this month, Paul Shugrue brought a new concept to WHRV when out of the Box was born. After a long career in commercial radio, Shugrue was tapped to fill the time slot of the late Rollie Bristol on WHRV. A daunting task, as Rollie Bristol was a commanding presence on the station for more than twenty years. With the blessing of Betty Luse, then the program director, Paul redesigned the way rock was being played in Hampton Roads.
“I was inspired by Rollie,” Paul says. “I knew he liked to start his show with a new song each night and I expanded on that to present something that had never been tried before on any radio station in the country: a nightly program giving listeners their first exposure to new music.” WHRV members responded immediately and the show was soon given an extra thirty minutes
on weeknights and an hour more on Saturdays.
For the last ten years, out of the Box - the name is record company jargon for playing something immediately upon release - has premiered of some of the biggest names in music as well as new artists. It’s that mix of familiar names and under-the-radar artists that has endeared the show to radio listeners here. He’s also tapped into the local music community by airing artists from Hampton Roads who previously had no outlet on the radio. “The music being made here in our own backyard is just as good as what’s coming out anywhere else, and I’m proud to be trumpeting these artists,” he says.
To commemorate the show’s first decade, Shugrue will air a series of broadcasts the last week of January, devoted to music that wouldn’t have been heard on the radio were it not for out of the Box - artists like Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, The Avett Brothers,
Amos Lee, Death Cab for Cutie, Norah Jones, Jack Johnson and Adele are but a few of the artists he’ll feature. There’ll also be a show that features some of the live performances he’s aired over the years.
“It’s been a great decade of music,” Shugrue says. “I want to thank the entire WHRo organization for having the foresight to let me bring it to Hampton Roads, and of course to all the WHRV members who have supported this organization, thanks for listening!”

f you read the President’s column on page 2, you were no doubt as excited about WHRo-TV programming in January as we were – as Bert
mentioned, it’s part of the extraordinary legacy of educational television.
The legacy continues to grow, but always with a view toward our roots in using the medium to enhance and enrich educational services. That’s one reason we’re so proud to share with you the results of a Ready to Learn study recently conducted by the Education Development Center and SRI International, which evaluated how technology and educational transmedia resources can enhance prekindergarten mathematics teaching and learning. The study found that the use of PBS KIDS content in the classroom significantly improves early math skills for preschoolers.
Children who used the PBS KIDS math supplement, which incorporated videos, digital games, interactive whiteboards, laptop computers, teacher support, and hands-on math materials, improved significantly in their understanding of the targeted early mathematics skills compared to the control group. Their teachers reported significant changes in students’ confidence and comfort with early mathematics concepts and teaching with technology.
We look forward to sharing more about the study – and all of work on behalf of children – in our next Parents’ Corner.
