DOWNTON ABBEY…..AND CHURCH?? Downton Abbey addicts, never fear. This is the Easter Season! Alt-hough it may seem that our beloved Downton has withdrawn into the tomb of death, it is ready for resurrection. Join us on Monday, April 4 for tea and a presentation to consider how Downton Abbey brings light to the core of our faith, the Paschal Mys-tery. We'll look back over six seasons of drama, hurt, and rebirth to discover how these beloved characters show us, again and again, what it means to

participate in the cycle of suffering, death, and resurrection we proclaim. The program is 6:30-8:30pm on April 4 in the St. Julie Center. Tea and British treats will be served. An RSVP is required. Please call the office at 254-6233 or email to [email protected] today so we know we have enough tea cups and treats for everyone.

Selection of Parish Pastoral Council Members

Based on our Parish Pastoral Council Governance Guidelines, selection of new members of the Saint Helen Parish Pastoral Council will again utilize the same method as in the past several years. This method of choosing council members harkens back to a fundamental element of our faith – that of relying on the Holy Spirit to actively guide our decisions:

“Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers... He said, ‘My brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand through the mouth of David… Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, ... become with us a witness to his resur-rection. So they proposed two, Joseph, called Barabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.” (Acts 1, 15-23) First, the apostles assembled the community of believers to discern appropriate candidates to continue with them in furthering Christ’s ministry. Through prayer, knowledge of the individuals in the community and self reflection by those who had accompanied Jesus throughout his minis-try, two individuals were determined to possess the characteristics necessary to serve the com-munity. They relied on the Holy Spirit to guide them in identifying individuals whose gifts were most needed and beneficial to the community as leaders. “Then they prayed, ‘You, Lord who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.’ Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostles.” (Acts 1, 24-26) Again, the community called for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to make the final selection as to whose was best suited to serve as one of the leaders. Selection of leaders by drawing of lots as opposed to voting, and hence electing, is not common practice outside of faith communities. What does it mean to draw lots? The dictionary gives a definition of “lots” and the process of drawing same: Lot – “one of a set of objects, as straws or pebbles, drawn or thrown from a container to decide a question or choice by chance.” Draw Lots - “the casting or drawing of such objects as a method of deciding something; to choose a person by lot”

Drawing on guidance from Scripture and the Holy Spirit, then, in the selection of members of the Saint Helen Parish Pastoral Council, the "lots" will be the individual candidate's names on slips of paper. These will be gathered into a vessel and drawn one at a time until the required num-ber have been selected.

This process of selecting the new council members by the drawing of lots will take place at the 5:00 p.m. Mass Saturday, April 16th.

One of the first acts of the apostles following Jesus’ final instructions and Ascension was to select someone to replace Judas in the apostolic ministry.
