July 2018 Trivia Question Winner
Glenn Ishida showed his brilliance by picking the
correct answer (after all four wrong answers had
been picked) to:
Even More First Porsche SUV
Before the Porsche 597 Jagdwagen, about 1951, a
1,300 cc Porsche engine powered the prototype
of a lightweight 4x4 which could be carried by
helicopters of the day. The production models
had a purpose-built air-cooled V-4.
Question:
For whom was this 4x4 intended?
1. The Finnish Border Guard
2. The United States Marine Corps
3. Kenya’s Air Cavalry
4. French Army
5. Austrian Jagdkommando (Special Forces)
Answer:
2. The United States Marine Corps bought
1,250 M422 Mighty Mites (short, 65” wheelbase), &
2,672 M422A1 Mighty Mites (long, 71” wheelbase)
Production ran from 1959 through 1962

Photo by Jim Allen for Four Wheeler Network
The production M422 Mighty Mite had:
An AMC air-cooled V-4 with 54 hp and 90 ft-lbs of torque
A 4 speed transmission and 2 speed transfer case
Locking front and rear differentials
With their small size and light (1,700 lbs empty) weight they’re desired by off-roaders. An M-422 in
“project” shape can bring $ 4,000; one in top shape could bring $ 15,500.

Valley and Anderson Valley. In addition to wine, you will find Redwood forests, the phenomenal Pacific
coastline, and numerous small towns to explore.

The other half of the week will be in Napa Valley, the most famous and arguably the best wine country
in all of the USA. The Carneros wine appellation is also right next door, and the delightful town of
Sonoma isn't too far either. World class restaurants, world famous vineyards and amazing views await
you here!
Every day there will be an optional driving tour in the morning (this is a Porsche Club adventure, after
all). Come along with the gang; or skip it to sleep in, go to the spa or beat the wine tasting crowds by
starting early. Whether you choose to explore the local roads or not, afternoons will be free for wine
tasting or whatever else may interest you!
The cost of the Week is $ 2,899 per couple. (Single drivers, please contact me.) Price includes the tour, 8
nights of lodging, three group lunches, and four group dinners.
Space is extremely limited. Please sign up NOW and get your deposit in by clicking on this link:

The $ 500 nonrefundable deposit is to secure your spot. Balance of registration fee is due on or before

advanced and planning purposes. Should you need to cancel, you can transfer your tickets to someone
else who is willing to take your place. (There is sure to be a waitlist for this event!) Questions? Email

23-26 August 2018, Porsche Club of America—Rolex Monterey Car Corral
At most Monterey Car Week events, and especially at Laguna Seca, preferred parking is worth it!
The PCA Car Corral is limited to 200 cars, PORSCHES ONLY6. And its first come, first served so buy your
corral passes now. But if you miss out on a Corral pass, come by our tent anyway and visit your friends.
All you need is either your PCA Membership card or a Porsche key to enter the tent.
A PCA Corral Pass is $ 65.00 per car. If you wish a catered lunch, the price is $ 30.00 per person. Lunch
is Saturday only.
Remember that a corral pass is not a race ticket: buy race tickets from WeatherTech Raceway Laguna
Seca www.weathertechraceway.com/ticket-information
Registration:
Registration opened at noon, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 at www.motorsportreg.com/events/porsche-
club-of-america-rolex-monterey-car-corral-weathertech-raceway-pca-778388
Monterey Recommendations:
If you visit Canepa in Scotts Valley, consider dining at Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing.
Paris Bakery in Monterey (near Bank of America) is a tasty (but not necessarily health-conscious) place
to start the day.
5 Technically, RUF cars have RUF Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs), but they’re pretty much Porsches. 6 As of 17 July 2018 there were 129 Porsches (and one Ferrari, but he’s driving a Porsche) registered for the corral.

Restaurant 917 is a taste of the Porsche Experience
From Orange County Register, by Jennifer Tanaka | [email protected], July 15, 2018
Chef Matt Lee serves a German-inspired dish at Porsche Experience Center’s Restaurant 917. “It’s a sauerbraten – short ribs, a sauer-based demi-glace sauce, herb spaetzle and braised cabbage, my version of kraut.” he says.
Sometimes in life we miss important things because we’re just going too fast. Yet, when we do slow
down, unexpected delights pop up in front of our eyes.
That’s the case with the Porsche Experience Center, which you might have missed as you were speeding
along the 405 freeway in Carson. But if you take the time to notice, you’ll find gems there. The first are
the high-performance racetracks where you can maneuver the latest Porsche models through a series of
driving modules. (Have you ever felt a sports car hit G-force mode?) The other is Restaurant 917.
Located on the second floor of the center, 917 serves fine food and wine with views of the PEC track.

“It is a very unusual concept,” admits executive
chef Matt Lee. “You’re overlooking a racetrack.
We combine cars and food. It’s just different.”
It’s a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Details
elevate the entire meal. Servers are trained to
communicate with sign language. “If I need a
table cleared or a water glass filled, then I make
eye contact” – with someone on the team – “and
I just sign for it,” says Alexandre Oliver, general
manager of food and beverage operations. “I
don’t have to say a word.”
The seamless service highlights the creativity
spouting from Lee’s kitchen. Private parties and
celebratory occasions are the events that
normally bring diners to 917. But Lee and Oliver
want more foodies to pull off the interstate.
“The big misperception is that we’re not open to
the public. But we most definitely are,” says Lee.
“People think you need to own a Porsche to come
here, as if it’s an exclusive club. But, it’s not. We
try to make everyone feel welcome – even if you
don’t own a Porsche.”
OAST: How did you start cooking at 917?
MATT LEE: My previous employment was at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. It’s run by the same food
contractors (Bon Appétit Management Co.) that do the Getty’s food service. Five years ago, Porsche
knew they were building the experience center out here. So the company sent me to Atlanta to bid for
the account. I did tastings for the executives. We competed against other restaurant groups such as
Wolfgang and Patina. It was a seven-course competition.
COAST: What is the difference between the two dining concepts, Restaurant 917 and Restaurant 356 in
Atlanta?
ML: Here, we have a more California twist. We just get better ingredients here than in Atlanta. So it
gives us more opportunities to change up the menu based upon what is best that day.
COAST: Speaking of ingredients, what are some of your favorites?
ML: I love seafood. Any type of seafood I can get my hands on I’d be happy to cook. The octopus is the
No. 1 seller. The Spanish octopus is my favorite thing to cook with right now. It’s sous vide for eight
hours. I put in olive and smoked bacon just to give a smoky flavor. Once it cools down, then we grill it. It

comes with a harissa aioli; Brussels sprouts; red cabbage that’s been glazed with a little sherry vinegar
and butter; pork skin chicharron for a little crunchiness; and lardo, which is a little cured fatback. Plus we
put on a little herb oil and micro cilantro. Pork just goes well with everything.
COAST: Any other ingredients?
ML: Heirloom tomatoes. There are so many different varieties that you can use. So that’s fun. Each has a
different flavor profile. I just put an heirloom tomato dish on the menu with smoked burrata, pickled
strawberries from Harry’s Berries. We’re smoking the burrata in-house with a cherrywood.
We’re also planning to change the menu six times a year, since sometimes things are only available for a
week, maybe two. So I don’t want to be stuck with too many things, I’ll come up with a menu that I can
change on my whim. We just started serving a German-inspired dish, since we are Porsche. It’s a
sauerbraten – short ribs, a sauer-based demi-glace sauce, herb spaetzle and braised cabbage, my
version of kraut.
I brought my own pastry chef, N.D. Lee, over from the Getty. We just finished working on our new
summer dessert. It’s a tableside play on s’mores. We’re going to incorporate the fire at the table. Even
though it’s a hot dish, you think of summer and camping and the outdoors.
Another exciting change is that we’re also working on a secret menu.
COAST: If you won’t spill the secret, then at least tell our readers about the butter served at Restaurant
917.
ML: It started out as a joke. It’s kind of funny but on Yelp and OpenTable everyone writes something
about the butter. It started out with these ice cube trays that they sell down in the store. Before we
opened, we came up with Porsche butters. They still sell the trays downstairs. You can try it yourself, but
it’s a lot harder to mold than people think! ■

‘Great Leader:’ Sergio Marchionne, Former Ferrari President, FCA Chief
Dead at 66
Marchionne left his mark on Formula 1, the Ferrari F1 race team and the entire auto industry
Sergio Marchionne learned his way around the Formula 1 paddock rather quickly during his tenure at Ferrari.

From AutoWeek, by Joe Saward, July 25, 2018
Sergio Marchionne, former president of Ferrari and Fiat Chrysler, was not a racing person, although he
enjoyed driving fast cars and owned several Ferrari road cars. He first became involved in the Ferrari
company in 2004 when he was appointed CEO of Fiat, which was then the Ferrari parent company.
In the latter years of his life, Marchionne also made his mark in Formula 1.
On Wednesday, Marchionne, 66, died in Italy from what were said to be complications from shoulder
surgery performed three weeks ago.
“Unfortantely, what we feared has come to pass. Sergio Marchionne, man and frend, is gone,” said new
company chairman John Elkann in a press release.
When Marchionne became involved with Ferrari in 2004, Fiat chairman Luca Montezemolo was the
chairman of Ferrari, and so it was Montezemolo who played the major role in running the supercar
business and the Formula 1 team. Ferrari was still on a high in Formula 1, with Michael Schumacher

winning his fifth consecutive World Championship and Ferrari picking up its sixth straight Constructors’
title.
CAR NEWS: 7 vehicles we wouldn’t have without Sergio Marchionne
As longtime FCA boss Sergio Marchionne unexpectedly left the automaker due to health issues -- with
Jeep CEO Mike Manley taking the proverbial wheel -- his departure has closed an ...
Marchionne’s direct involvement in Ferrari F1 activities did not begin until after Montezemolo was
replaced as Fiat chairman by John Elkann in April 2010. After this key switch, Marchionne and
Montezemolo clashed over how Ferrari should be developed, with Montezemolo keen to cap annual
production at 7,000 cars to maintain the exclusivity of the Ferrari brand, while Marchionne wanted to
expand, ramping up production and planning for a Ferrari sport-utility vehicle. It did not help
Montezemolo’s case that Ferrari’s F1 program had slipped into the doldrums, the team winning its last
title in 2008.
In the end, Marchionne won the battle. In 2014, Montezmeolo resigned as Ferrari chairman and CEO
and Marchionne took over.
“We had in the recent past some recent serious disagreements, but I never called into question Sergio’s
courage, ability and vision that made the saving and re-launch possible,” Montezemolo said in a
statement.
Soon after he became chairman, Marchionne moved to improve the F1 team and fired Marco Mattiacci,
who had been in charge of Ferrari Gestione Sportiva for just a few months. Significantly, it was Mattiacci
who had orchestrated the deal to replace Fernando Alonso with Sebastian Vettel before the axe swung.
Marchionne chose Maurizio Arrivabene as Mattiacci’s replacement, which seemed an odd decision.
CAR NEWS: Marchionne suffered embolism during cancer surgery
Former Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne suffered an embolism while undergoing an
operation for an invasive shoulder sarcoma and has irreversible damage to his brain function, and he
had ...
“We decided to appoint Maurizio Arrivabene because we need a person with a thorough understanding
not just of Ferrari but also of the governance mechanisms and requirements of the sport,” Marchionne
said at the time. “Maurizio has a unique wealth of knowledge: he has been extremely close to the
Scuderia for years and, as a member of the F1 Commission, is also keenly aware of the challenges we are
facing. He has been a constant source of innovative ideas focused on revitalisation of Formula One. His
managerial experience on a highly complex and closely regulated market is also of great importance,
and will help him manage and motivate the team.”
In reality, it soon became clear that Marchionne was calling the shots on everything.

Ferrari was floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 2015, under the RACE ticker. Share price rose in

...
In 2016, Marchionne was at his most brutal when he forced the resignation of Ferrari F1 technical
director James Allison, who had just lost his wife and needed time to be with his family. Marchionne
ruled Ferrari by fear, his reputation for firing people at will keeping everyone on their toes and silent
towards the media.
“This is a sad day for all of us in F1,” said Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. “We have a lost a huge supporter of
our sport, a fierce competitor, an ally and a friend. Our heartfelt sympathies are with Sergio’s family and
all at Scuderia Ferrari at this difficult time.”
Formula 1 chairman Chase Carey said that Marchionne was “a “great leader of not just Formula 1 and
the automobile world, but the business world overall. He led with great passion, energy and insight, and
inspired all around him. His contributions to Formula 1 are immeasurable. He was also a true friend to
all of us and he will be deeply missed.”
It remains to be seen what impact the death of Marchionne will have in Formula 1, but the first likely
indication will come when the Scuderia picks it second driver for 2019. Marchionne was keen to
promote youngster Charles Leclerc to challenge Sebastian Vettel and create a stronger Ferrari challenge
in the Constructors’ title, but the new management may decide not to take a risk and to keep Kimi
Raikkonen.

Damn: Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Breaks Nurburgring Record With a
6:44.97 Lap
The hardcore Aventador's time is nearly three seconds quicker than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. It's now
the fastest production car ever around the Nordschleife.
From Road&Track, by Brian Silvestro, July 26, 2018
LAMBORGHINI
For the past few days, Lamborghini has been teasing the car internet with short trailer videos featuring
its new hardcore Aventador SVJ at the Nurburgring. Turns out the company was building hype for a good
reason: The car just broke the Nurburgring production car lap record.
The Aventador SVJ set a blistering 6:44.97 lap time around the 'Ring's Nordschelife circuit, cementing it
as the fastest production car to ever lap the track. It beats out the previous record-holder, the Porsche
911 GT2 RS, by nearly three seconds, and the Huracan Performante by just over seven seconds. It's even
quick enough to beat the all-electric NIO EP9, which set a 6:45 last May.

Specs for the Aventador SVJ have yet to be released, but Lamborghini has confirmed the car comes
equipped with its Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA) active aerodynamic system. It uses flaps that
open and close to alternately generate huge downforce in corners, and reduce drag on straights. ALA
can also vary downforce left to right, which Lamborghini says increases cornering speed. This tech was a
big reason why the Huracan Performante was able to set such a quick time last March.

Lamborghini says the SVJ has a power-to-weight ratio of 4.37 pounds per horsepower, but hasn't given
exact figures. We can assume weight savings over the Aventador S and a slight power bump for its 6.5-
liter V12. The steering has been retuned, too, and the suspension is now stiffer than the setup of the old
Aventador SV. The standard tires are Pirelli P Zero Corsas developed for this car, while more-aggressive
P Zero Trofeo Rs are optional. Unsurprisingly, the Trofeo Rs were used for the record lap.
This lap time is a full 15 seconds faster than the time Lamborghini set in the Aventador SV back in 2015.
It just goes to show how much a car can be improved over time. Not, bad Lamborghini. Not bad at all.
Your turn, Porsche.

An Alaskan grizzly bear treated this 289 Shelby Cobra like a tuna can
From Hagerty.com, by Eric Weiner, July 26, 2018
When Tom Cotter walked outside into the crisp Alaska on Wednesday morning, he stopped dead in his
tracks. His 1965 289 Shelby Cobra was right where he parked it the night before, except for one teensy
development—the convertible top had a gaping hole it. In fact, it looked like it had been violently ripped
apart by a grizzly bear.
On any other day, in any other situation, a grizzly bear slashing through a Cobra top like it was a
stubborn tube of Pringles would be the punchline to a cruel joke. Not this day.
Cotter, who is the host of our Barn Find Hunter video series, is currently touring Alaska with three other
Cobra owners and their guests. On the 11th day of the wild trip, Tom and the gang hopped on a ferry
boat to the fishing town of Whittier. They later learned that the only way out of town is to drive through
an active railroad tunnel.
“The workers halted train traffic to let us through, but when they saw we were all driving convertibles
they insisted we put up our tops,” Cotter says. (Apparently rocks sometimes fall from the tunnel ceiling,
because of course they do.) “We usually just put on our tonneau covers, because no matter the
weather, the tops are sort of frowned upon.”

With the exception of one driver who instead borrowed a hard hat, up went the tops. “I haven’t even
put mine on in several years—lot of stiff vinyl and difficult to assemble and install.” The gaggle of Cobras
nevertheless made it through to their destination in Girdwood, Alaska, stopping for the night so their
owners could have dinner and catch some shut-eye.
When Cotter awoke the next morning, one of the other drivers soon called, telling him to get outside to
the parking lot immediately. Lo and behold, there was the mangled remains of the top, along with some
muddy paw prints and a few small dents in the rear fender.
The police later arrived, and upon inspecting the prints and finding some scruffy brown hairs,
determined it was indeed a bear’s handiwork. But before you jump to the conclusion that the grizzly
was just more of a Porsche fan, it turned out that all the cuddly guy wanted was a small pack of Fig
Newtons that were unknowingly left behind the seats. "Or maybe he wanted a closer look at Carroll's
signature," says Cotter.
Through it all, he remained calm and mostly just bemused. “The car’s top had survived 53 years
unscathed, but couldn’t make it 11 days in Alaska,” Cotter says. “I’ve got bigger problems, anyway. My
clutch hydraulics went out, so I’ve convinced a guy to let me borrow his airplane hangar for a bit to fix
things. I’ve got work to do.”
