Look Out for Lent The season of Lent is

comprised of the fortydays, not countingSundays, leading us to theresurrection celebrationof Easter. This holy seasonbegins each year with AshWednesday, which fallsthis year on March 5.Traditionally, Lent is atime of introspection, oflooking within to see whateach of us might give upas a Lenten fast or take upas a Lenten discipline tohelp us draw closer toGod. But is that how Jesusspent the forty days thatled him to Calvary?

Scriptures speak ofthe moment in Jesusministry when he set hisface to go to

Jerusalem (Luke 9:51),knowing full well whatawaited him there. Clearly,it was not for his own

bene t that Jesus resolved to take up the cross. Rather, it was for you,for me, and for an entire creation bound by sin. You see, rather than looking within, Jesus spent

the weeks leading up to his passion, death, and resurrection, looking out at a world in need.

This year at Russell, we are striving to follow the example of Jesus through the holy season ofLent. Many of our Sunday school classes have begun working through The Externally FocusedChurch, a book which profoundly impacted many who read it during the initial phase of our VCIprocess (see below). This book wrestles with what it means to be the church of Jesus Christ, whichsurely is called to be fundamentally concerned with impacting the needs of the community beyondits own doors with the love of Jesus. In my Lenten teaching series, Look Out for Lent, Ill bewrestling with the concepts put forth in The Externally Focused Church, revealing their roots inScripture, and striving to discern what they mean for each of us individually, and for all of us as achurch family.

Jesus set his face on Jerusalem, on his own passion, death, and resurrection, not for his ownsake, but for the sake of others. Surely the people who claim the name of Jesus should have thesame mind within them (see Philippians 2:5). It is worth considering if an internally focuses life orchurch can with any integrity claim the name of Christ. Jesus lived an externally focused life, andwe give thanks to God for it. His people and His Church are surely called to do the same.

I am excited to spend this holy season with you as we learn to Look Out for Lent together. Grace & peace,

    (cont. from pg. 1)

VCI Update Phase two of the Vibrant Church Initiative (VCI) is well underway. Many of our Sunday Schoolclasses are working through the book The Externally Focused Church, which Dr. Watson will beutilizing in his Lenten teaching series, Look Out for Lent. Some have even begun looking atSimple Church. These two books had the greatest impact on members of our VCI team, who readthem during the initial phase of this process. Members of ourchurch council, with help from many of you, are compiling data inanticipation of our church consultation in April. On the afternoonof Sunday, March 30, a representative from the Texas AnnualConference will join us for a pre -consultation workshop. Markyour calendars for this important date, and well give you moredetails as soon as we have them. Should you have any questionsabout VCI, and what it means for the future of our church family, please feel free to contact Dr. Watson.
