  • 143 New Outstanding Referees announced for 2011

    •  Outstanding Referee Program started in 2008 •  Recognizes scientists who have been exceptionally helpful in

assessing manuscripts for all APS journals.

    •  Awards are based on the quality number and timeliness of their reports without regard for membership in the APS country of origin or field of research.

    •  The award is highly selective comparable to APS Fellowship with only 1/3% out of 45,000 active referees recognized each year.

    •  With this year’s awardees we now have 1174 Outstanding Referees

    •  The awardees come from 45 different countries with large contingents from the US Germany Canada Spain UK and France.

    •  Outstanding Referees are to be congratulated and thanked for their outstanding service to the physics community.

  • 5) What is the cost/article for a library to subscribe each year to all 18,000 APS articles?

    1.  $10.00 2.  $5.00 3.  $1.00

    License

  • CC licenses at APS

Because we can no longer collect $$ for subscriptions, authors must pay an article processing charge associated with making their article freely available.(except for PRST-AB) –  PR $1700 (hybrid journals, because some free,

some CC license) –  PRL $2700 (hybrid journal) –  PRX $1500 (“gold” open access journal, all is free). –  PRST-PER $1000(short articles)

  • Author Choice •  It is not clear that many authors can or will pay to have their

articles freely available on the internet. •  It is clear, however, that APS MUST have options for authors

to choose. •  It is also clear, that APS MUST have these options in place

now, in case there are government mandates, that we will be able to respond quickly to any changes.

    •  My prediction is that our current journals and our open access options will coexist for many years to come, and any changes will take place gradually.

    •  With these new offerings, APS is in a strong and stable position for the future.

  • On April 18, the APS Council approved the Ridge Expansion Project, which includes a second floor addition over part of the existing building and full renovation of the existing first floor offices. The project will start in the fall, and should be completed by January 1, 2012.
