  • Once Vicon Hardware is powered on, open Vicon Software found on desktop Change system view type to RELIEF Bonita and all other views to RELIEF (highlighted in yellow) for camera calibration Bonita You should see the forceplates in this view type

  • Calibration is most effective with two people On right of screen, select the System Preparation under Tools Choose 5-marker wand and L-Frame under the 2 pull down menus Have one person stand by area of force plates with the calibration wand The other person should hit start under Calibrate Cameras subheading. Calibration Type should read Full Calibration After start is clicked, the person with the wand should move the wand around the entire volume making sure to turn around so that all cameras can view the wand. Process ends when all cameras are green in Vicon. Once this is complete, wait for the system to finish calibration (System Preparation) (System) These values should be below 0.16. If not, perform a camera refinement or redo the calibration before saving.

  • Grab the T-wand and place it on the upper right corner of Plate #1 (plate on right when looking at them from the captains deck) Click Start under the Set Volume Origin subheading as seen on left, and then hit Set Origin You should now see the cameras in the correct orientation in Vicon Return the T-wand to the wall with a towel blocking the markers from camera view

Check Camera Views: Hide all reflective markers, including the wand used in camera calibration Under the 3D Perspective tab on top left, select Camera (Shown in picture 1) Select the cameras (one at a time or hold Control key to select all cameras) To do this, expand the Cameras sub-heading under the System tab as shown in picture 2. Picture 3 shows results of selecting all seven cameras If there are white dots in camera field boxes, this indicates the presence of reflective markers or objects that reflective components that the cameras are picking up. Move markers and/or reflective objects out of camera viewing area. Mask reflective objects if necessary by clicking on the paintbrush and then clicking on the reflective object.   • Data Management Tree Icon Click on the Data Management Tree Icon in Vicon The Data Management Tree window will pop up Double click RELIEF Short Latency Reflexes and click the yellow node (New Patient) and rename to the appropriate subject identifier (AAA0000) With subject identifier highlighted click on the gray node 4 times Rename each session according to session number (AAA0000S1, AAA0000S2, etc.) Repeat above steps under RELIEF Study (green node)

  • Part 2: Subject Set-up Have subject change into lab shirt and shorts Take subjects anthropometrics (without shoes) In target locator enter anthropometrics and click on calculate target locations. Record values on data collection form Mark subjects initials on floor with pencil for AP locations for high and low targets (take average if within 2 cm) Set the high and low target heights for reaching trials Turn on target sensor black box for reaching trials Have subject don shoes Prep subjects back for muscle EMG If the area where electrodes are to be placed has hair over it, remove the hair with a blue disposable razor Prepare the skins surface by scrubbing it with an alcohol prep pad. Wait for the alcohol to evaporate before placing the electrodes Place the ERS electrodes as pictured There should be a 6 cm gap between the electrodes when measured center to center An electrode also needs to be placed over the L ASIS Level of L2 6 cm

  • Part 3: Table Set-up Adjust table, headrest, and scale to subjects mid-sternum to ASIS measurement Plug in black cable connected to the scale into the BIOPAC at either the 0 or 1 analog output holes Increase tension on torso table by tightening bolts until the scale reads 100lbs and then tare scale so that it reads 0 lbs With the subjected seated on the treatment table, attach the BIOPAC leads to the four lumbar electrodes The black lead should be attached to the L ASIS (ground) In Vicon, check the EMG signals with resistance given to posterior trunk Situate the subject in prone with the ASIS aligned with top front edge of the treatment table Position a towel/foam roll under subjects ankles for comfort Strap subject to table over upper third of thigh and mid-calf and tighten until snug Connect the tapper to the gold cable

  • Part 4: Administer SLR Instruct the subject to take a few deep breaths and completely relax so that you can get their resting baseline torso weight Calculate 5% of their torso weight Instruct subject to contract the gluts with minimal head/shoulder movement to lift off 5% calculated weight of their torso In Vicon under Tools Capture Auto Capture Setup, Arm and Lock the system Administer 10 trials on each side beginning with left side Give 10 seconds between each trial Unlock and Unarm the system before disconnecting the tapper

  • Part 2: Subject Set-up Clusters Place appropriate extremity cluster plates on lateral aspect of wraps and each shoe Align the sacral cluster along the midline of the body, with the arrow pointing towards the participants head, and attach to velco on shorts Have the subject don the surgeons cap and tie securely, making sure that long hair is in a bun Place head cluster on the surgeons cap with arrow aligned along the midline Place appropriately sized finger propeller on each index finger (1 = smallest, 3 = largest) Attach the thoracic cluster to the subjects back at the level of the scapular spine using cover-roll stretch tape The lumbar cluster is not a plate, but rather is assembled using free markers Start by placing a marker at the level of L1 directly over the spinous process Place a marker to the left of that marker at the level of L1.   • Follow EMG Set-Up as outlined in EMG section of Lab Manual. The RELIEF trial uses sensors: 1: ERS_R 2: EXO_R 3:RAB_R 4: INO_R 5:ERS_L 6:EXO_L 7:RAB_L 8: INO_L 13: DEL_R 14: DEL_L Once all sensors are placed, turn them on. Open the Trigno utility from the toolbar, click Start. All sensors should show that they are paired indicated by the green light and the paired icon by each sensor.

  • Collect Static Trial & Re-construct Have the subject step into the space Make sure you are in Live mode Under the Tools, select Capture (directors clapboard) Have the subject assume the T-pose Instruct subject to look straight ahead, and flex shoulders to 80 degrees with thumbs pointing up Make sure all sensors are visible, readjust sensors on the subject if they are not Instruct subject to not move Click Start and collect ~400 frames Under the Subject Capture subheading, click start to record data, click stop after about 1-2 seconds of collection. Open the Data Management window and double click on the previously captured trial Click on the Gray Markers at the top of the screen under File, Edit, Window, Help

  • Labeling Markers: On the right side of the main screen, select Label/Edit button. It looks like a tag. Click on first marker name from list on right (PelLtSup) Click on corresponding marker Use previously labeled pictures to help correctly label markers Vicon will cue you as to which marker you should label next, so you dont have to click on the list on the right again If you label a marker wrong, click Control-Z for edit undo function. Do that until you get rid of all mistakes. After all markers are assigned, press the Escape button on the keyboard which will allow Vicon to connect the markers When finished, click on save shortcut button Remove all joint markers in the extremities for subsequent trials Helpful Reminders: Joint marker names are based on anatomical position During calibration trial, subject has shoulders flexed to 80 degrees with thumbs up Shoulder back is more posterior Shoulder front is more anterior Elbow lat is higher Elbow mid is lower Wrist Rad is higher Wrist ulna is lower

  • Picture above shows all markers used for calibration trial. Blue markers are the joint markers that are removed after calibration. Includes bilateral wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle markers. Picture above shows all markers used all subsequent trials. Notice how joint markers have been removed. This is accomplished by simply physically removing joint markers off subject after calibration trial completed.

  • Data Collection: On the right side of the main screen, select the capture button. It looks like a directors board. Vicon must be in Live Dont start collecting data until model is attached. If the model is not attaching, have the subject assume the T-pose as used in the static calibration. Under the Auto Capture Setup subheading; select Arm to arm the trigger You can now use the handheld trigger to collect data. Data collection duration and other specific settings may vary depending on specific protocol. (Arm) (Capture)
