COMMENTS

This unit, inspired by the natural environment, is informed by first hand study of primary sources such as trees and root formations as well as by appropriate contextual references identified during visits to two local galleries. Drawing and painting media, photographs and annotation are used for the purpose of recording in the candidate’s sketchbook. These, together with critical analysis of the work studied at first hand, form a central part of the submission. The candidate explores acrylic and watercolour media and refines control of them to achieve specific intentions. Similarly, the working characteristics of two kinds of 3D media -plaster bandage and wire and slab form clay - are investigated to explore their creative possibilities and develop an appropriate level of control. Two distinct responses are produced. The first is in the form of a watercolour composition of sunlight breaking through trees. The other is the result of following a design pathway based on tree formations incorporating figures and finally realised as a glazed and fired ceramic piece.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

There is strong analysis & evaluation of the candidate’s own work and that of others, including examples studied at first hand in local galleries. There is evidence of mature interpretation, sound understanding and ability to apply contextual research effectively.

AO2 Creative Making

Coherent two and three dimensional ideas are creatively and skillfully developed. There are clear relationships established between working methods and outcomes and formal elements are well-considered and applied. Evidence of process skills is of a high order and achievement is generally stronger than that seen in the two final products.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Confident and highly competent recording abilities are evident in the use of drawing & painting media, together with photography and annotation. Strong research and enquiry is undertaken, mainly from accessible, good quality primary sources.

AO4 Personal Presentation

Realistic intentions are effectively realised, especially in process evidence. The submission is well focused throughout, with clear connections between constituent parts of the unit. Authorative and accomplished presentation is accompanied by well-considered, articulate evaluation.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS?

I intend to follow a native theme for my coursework title ‘environment’. I plan to research artists that use the Native American style of Hada to represent animals in an abstract, yet recognisable way. My first final piece will consist of a simple animal - (no background/foreground) depicted in the Hada style. I will use the traditional Hada colours of red and black. For my second piece I plan to build a Hada animal into a more realistic background.

COMMENTS

Taking the natural environment as the main theme, the submission begins with investigation of the candidate’s immediate environment, recording this using a variety of media. Selections are made of visually interesting aspects and these are analysed in fair detail. Related contextual research brings the unit to a closer focus on North American Art in the style of Hada, inspired, it seems, by a visit to Canada. Visual research deals with the careful recording of wildlife, mainly from secondary sources, followed by the adaptation of these into patterned images that are characteristic of the Hada style. Two final outcomes are produced, one as a semi-abstract painted composition featuring leaping dolphins and the other as a series of stylized designs, in limited colour, based on a whale, horse and bird.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Good critical and analytical skills are seen in the research of challenging contextual references. The study is thoughtfully considered, resulting in thoroughly developed responses that demonstrate sound understanding of the purposes, meanings and contexts underlying symbolic imagery.

AO2 Creative Making

There is sound understanding and application of processes through which animal forms become progressively stylized using line, shape and limited colour. Formal elements are integrated with sensitivity, showing a fair degree of technical control. Evidence of Creative Making is not as strong as for the other Assessment Objectives.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Experiences and ideas are confidently recorded within the context of focused research and enquiry with due regard given to stated intentions.

AO4 Personal Presentation

Responses show personal interests and have meaning for the candidate and a perceptive audience. There is a sensitive respect for the subject matter and thoughtful links can be seen between the different parts of the submission.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS?

My intentions are to ‘explore the environment’. I would like to look at animals and flowers specifically as opposed to buildings and landscapes. I’d also like to incorporate my cat, Blackie, into my work. For the flower work I would like to research Georgia O’Keefe as I like her work and I feel it will help me with inspiration.

COMMENTS

In this unit, the candidate’s intentions were to study flowers, animals and, in particular, a pet cat. Investigation begins with several sketchbook pages of everyday objects using a range of media and techniques to explore and record these. Additionally, there is sometimes a focus on visual elements such as pattern, colour and texture. There is on-going analysis of the success, or otherwise, of these processes, with contextual study proceeding alongside visual investigations. This leads to focused research of the work of an artist who takes special interest in the depiction of animals. These references are used as the basis for developing a personal approach to the subject. The first of two final outcomes is a systematically planned development. From initial recording using drawings and photographs, through pattern and colour studies and research of media, the work culminates in large-scale colourfully patterned final pieces. A second outcome is a development from close-up flower studies presented as acrylic paintings.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Appropriate contextual references are selected from secondary sources and relevant analysis is undertaken to usefully inform the candidate’s own interpretations. There is good understanding of purpose and context and sound critical skills are evident in evaluations of personal work.

AO2 Creative Making

Ideas are explored confidently and selective use is made of a suitable range of media. There is a good feeling for pattern and colour, together with understanding of the relationship between processes and outcomes. There is impressive ability to purposefully develop imagery in order to accentuate visual elements.

AO3 Reflective Recording

There is a fairly straightforward approach to subject matter, but lively, articulate research and enquiry is well organised and communicated. There is very good selection and use of accessible primary source material.

AO4 Personal Presentation

Clear realisation of personal intentions is evident, showing sound presentational skills. The submission demonstrates informed, meaningful responses to subject matter in which the candidate has a strong personal interest.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS?

The topic given was ‘environment’. I will research Banksy as my main artist because I have been spirited by his work on famous pictures. I am also quite interested in stage production so I want to incorporate this into my design. I also like the look of skyscapes, so I may do something on this.

COMMENTS

Within the overarching theme of Environment, the candidate identifies two aspects for development. The first of these is informed by the work of Banksy and the second from an interest in stage production. The candidate also expresses an interest in skyscapes. The submission includes designing for a stencil print, originating in the pattern of local buildings. Further design work is developed from famous international landmarks. As well as looking at the work of Banksy, the candidate also refers to the skyline images of a New York photographer. A second line of development is followed with a computer-based project inspired by the natural environment, the work of Banksy and personal involvement in a stage production. The process of designing is tracked using annotated frame grabs and culminates in a final outcome produced by the use of a colour printer.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Some analysis and evaluation of different contextual sources is evident, with fair understanding of purposes and context and some ability to interpret these in relation to the candidate’s own practical developments.

AO2 Creative Making

Ideas are explored and developed in terms of pattern printing and digital manipulation, using a suitable range of new and traditional media with varying degrees of success. Design processes are clearly documented.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Ideas and their development are suitably recorded and enquiry is undertaken in line with intentions. Research evidence is strongest when based on primary sources, such as the urban environment.

AO4 Personal Presentation

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS?

My intention for my final piece is to do a sea themed oil pastel. I would like to do a shell. I would also like to do some print work with shells. I am going to research artists who have produced work based on the seaside. I will explore the seaside and beach and take photographs of Swansea Bay.

COMMENTS

The unit follows the theme of Seaside, supported by several sketchbook studies of objects in the immediate environment. These are recorded by means of a range of media and processes, such as surface rubbings, line drawings, colour and tonal studies and stencil prints based on urban architecture. The candidate focuses on natural objects, including seashells, fish and flowers. Some reference is made to tattoo imagery and very brief documentation of the seascapes of Ciaran O’Brian. A range of interpretations is developed as oil pastel studies, coloured paper collage and repeat prints produced by scanning original artwork and manipulating these by CAD.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

The submission shows fairly basic evidence of contextual understanding, with minimal reference to the work of others. Investigations are not sustained but have some relevance to practical developments.

AO2 Creative Making

There is evidence of ability to develop ideas, with some competence shown in handling several different media. The unit shows awareness of the visual elements of texture, patterns and, particularly colour.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Research and enquiry are fairly rudimentary, limiting the breadth of developments. Collection and organisation of information is quite limited. Recording skills are stronger than other aspects.

AO4 Personal Presentation

Clear links are evident between different parts of the submission and some outcomes, although limited in scope ,are adequately resolved.

COMMENTS

This Controlled Assignment is a response to the visual stimuli question Functional and Decorative. Because it is presented as a design project and involves craftsmanship in producing the final outcome, in assessing the unit, due recognition is given to the definitions of Craft and Design described in Section 4.6 of the Specification. Accessible primary reference sources were located in a local museum that included displays of insects as well as relevant examples of jewellery and ceramics. Research has been undertaken of certain craft materials and processes and, from these studies, characteristic working properties are taken into account in the design development. The final outcomes are in the form of a large cold enamel cast pewter brooch and a matching pair of earrings in a style influenced by Art Nouveau.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Well-focused contextual research shows perceptive analysis of relevant sources, particularly the Art Nouveau movement, and the ability to select and interpret for purposes of own designing; mature understanding, advanced critical skills and articulate responses are evident in the evaluation of candidate’s own work and that of others.

AO2 Creative Making

There is a strong sense of purpose in the exploration of materials and techniques in investigating processes that present a high degree of challenge. Creative development is focused and sustained, with sensitive awareness of relationship between methods and outcomes. The submission shows impressive evidence of the review and refinement of ideas as they are developed during a well-understood design process.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Skilful recording of visual and written research and enquiry is evident, showing depth of insight and strong imagination. Effective use is made of thoughtfully-selected primary sources, and research is well directed and clearly communicated; There is successful transference of skills and ideas to new situations.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS?

I have chosen this question because I like the idea of making a piece of artwork that serves a purpose. My intentions are to make something that is both functional and decorative. I would like to make my final piece from textiles, perhaps making a blanket or play mat. I want my target audience to be quite young, aiming for 3 - 7 year olds. I want to make something the child will enjoy and learn from but for the piece to also be decorative and appealing to parents.

COMMENTS

In response to the Controlled Assignment Functional and Decorative, the unit begins with brief research of several possible lines of enquiry, but quickly selects a textile outcome as the most interesting. Relevant textile designers and children’s book illustrators are researched to provide contextual background. Research of existing board games is undertaken and a number of possible design schemes drafted. A questionnaire survey is conducted to elicit responses to these, and a game associated with space travel is selected. The candidate researches a range of different motifs and textile media and techniques to represent planets and also uses a pet dog as a primary reference to develop line illustrations of a space dog. The unit then goes on to further refine ideas for design development and selects the best of these for final production as a children’s game. The final outcome is realised as a quilted play mat with fabric applique and machine stitchery decoration, together with woollen pompom figures and a large textile die.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Thorough contextual research of relevant design sources, including board games and children’s book illustration, is undertaken and there is suitable interpretation of these to inform the design process. References are thoughtfully combined to develop new possibilities.

AO2 Creative Making

Materials and techniques are purposefully experimented with to find those best suited to design intentions. Suitable sources, although mainly of secondary origin, are rigorously explored to generate innovative design options. Textile materials and techniques are well selected and skilfully handled to produce an outcome of good quality, suitable for use by young children.

AO3 Reflective Recording

The candidate has applied herself conscientiously and systematically to relevant research, including a market survey, and has competently selected, organised and communicated her enquiries. Investigations and findings are recorded confidently through written observations and suitable drawing methods.

AO4 Personal Presentation

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS?

My intentions are to design a mosaic style design based on shells and buildings. This will focus on contrasting natural and made forms. My media will be oil pastel and my main aim will be to make the piece bold and eye-catching. Through studying and preparing for this in my sketchbook I have decided to experiment with pattern. I am going to incorporate made and natural into the piece at the most basic level. I will concentrate on contrast, enhancing this by using pattern and a variety of media (pen coloured pencils and coloured pens) and mainly use pen for made forms and bright colours (softer) for natural. I am going to look at close ups of shells, flowers, buildings and mechanical objects.

COMMENTS

Combinations of natural and made forms is chosen for the Controlled Assignment and the unit begins with research of objects such as seashells, leaves, trees and buildings. The work of Bridget Riley is studied to investigate shell patterns and this leads to interpretation of observational studies of shells in line, pattern and abstracted forms. Further contextual study is undertaken of O’Keefe, Klimt and Gaudi, relating this to close-up photography of garden furniture, sequin jewellery and household items. Some of these are then used as the basis for abstracted pattern design. Further visual investigations are made of local buildings and, again, these are stylised as patterned compositions. From this visual and contextual research, a final design is developed which combines various aspects of stylised pattern featuring architectural and natural imagery.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

AO1 : Contextual sources are competently analysed, showing keen critical and evaluative skills. Essential characteristics of these are selected and interpretations show sound understanding of their key elements, as well as the particular contexts within which such work was produced.

AO2 Creative Making

Ideas are well explored and competently developed using suitably selected materials and processes. Connections between visual and contextual sources are purposefully investigated and relationships are carefully developed and sensitively refined. Formal elements, particularly line, pattern and form, are intelligently incorporated into processes and outcomes.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Research is well organised and findings clearly communicated. The selection and adaptation of primary and secondary source material shows good judgement, sound recording skills and thoughtful application to the intentions of the submission.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS?

I chose the question Functional and Decorative, my intentions throughout this Unit were to be quite hands on, because I enjoy being creative, and learning about new techniques, and trying them out for myself. I wanted to research various decorative objects and attempt to try and do the same but in my own style. I looked at lamp shade designs because they are very unique in their style and patterns, and how they can be made using lots of different materials. I also intended to work on glass plates and create a stained glass window effect using acrylics. I wanted to try this because it looked interesting, and it would have been wonderful to have seen all the warm colours blend well together, as well as colder colours representing sadness. However I decided against experimenting in glass as it would have been time consuming and I didn’t research any stained glass work on church windows. I decided that for my Final Piece I would focus on printing repeated patterns instead, based on medieval tile patterns.

COMMENTS

Functional and Decorative is the Controlled Assignment chosen for this unit and it begins with the compilation of a list of functional objects. Shelves and lamp shades then become a focus, accompanied by some contextual notes on American artist/designer, L.C.Tiffany. Several sketchbook pages contain a range of media explorations. Notes on the process of quilting, the Aboriginal artist, David Dunn and the craft of mosaic, appear in subsequent pages. There follows a study of medieval tile patterns and innovative developments from these and a range of printed outcomes. The sketchbook concludes with an extended evaluation of the submission.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

A variety of contextual sources are identified and some analysis of these is undertaken to gain sufficient understanding of their purposes and meanings. However, links to the candidate’s practical enquiries are sometimes tenuous.

AO2 Creative Making

Many ideas are explored and some of these are developed with a fair degree of success, using both new and traditional print media. Mixed media, including collage, is included in purposeful experimentation to achieve interesting, if not fully resolved, outcomes. Good awareness of shape and pattern.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Suitable research and enquiry is undertaken which, generally, is appropriate to intentions but is not sufficiently focused or pursued in depth to productively inform practical developments. Recording skills of drawing and writing are of a fair standard.

AO4 Personal Presentation

AO4 : As with AO2, this is one of the stronger elements of the submission. In particular, the unit is presented in a logical order with clear connections made between the various components, with intentions plainly explained and adequately realised.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS?

It is my intention to produce a functional and decorative piece and do a mosaic. I would like my work to be 3D and have an effect. I would like to do a mosaic because it would be a challenge and would allow me to push my art forward and hopefully gain a new level. I also intend to do an oil pastel piece because I have become very comfortable using them and feel confident I can produce a good piece with them. I want to focus on the theme of nature and explore flowers and wild life I am going to take photographs of my theme to support my work.

COMMENTS

The unit promptly focuses on the production of a mosaic panel as a response to the CA Functional & Decorative. The candidate chooses to develop the theme of nature and produces a couple of sketchbook pages featuring decorative versions of flowers using different techniques including paint, coloured linear designs and torn paper collage. The final outcome is a coloured mosaic panel.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Some references are made to contexts within which mosaics can be found but, otherwise, evidence of contextual understanding is minimal.

AO2 Creative Making

There is some development of ideas and investigation of a basic range of media, with account taken of the relationship between intentions and outcomes. Rudimentary skills are evident in the selection and handling of mosaic, but more competence can be seen in the few examples of painting, drawing and collage work.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Evidence of research and enquiry is thin and this, probably has had a direct impact on the overall standard of the submission. Very little research material has been collected but recording skills of drawing and writing are of a fair standard.

AO4 Personal Presentation

This is the stronger aspect of the unit inasmuch as there is a focus, coherence and logic evident as well as a clearly personal, if limited, response.

COMMENTS

This Personal Investigation has its origins in the art and culture of a historical city near Shanghai which is the home of the candidate. In particular, an art style known as Yan Jing Ba Jue forms the basis of the initial research. A range of historical crafts and contemporary practices are researched with special attention given to Jingtailan (Cloisonné). A suitable, manageable craft process is developed that incorporates the use of cold enamel. Visual research is undertaken of subject matter that is in line with the candidate’s intentions, with material collected from primary (Bristol Zoo) and secondary sources. A range of recording skills are evident and the design process shows a combination of innovative personal ideas that are sensitively informed by contextual research.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Contextual sources are selected on a very personal basis, with close association with the candidate’s own cultural background. Relevant investigations are undertaken that are sustained, focused and informative to practical enquiries. Rigorous and perceptive analyses and evaluations of sensitively-selected sources are evident. From what might seem to be rather stereotypical imagery, innovative ideas and a novel approach is developed.

AO2 Creative Making

Within the context of cultural heritage, fresh ideas are creatively developed, making effective use of good quality visual sources studied at first hand, such as at Bristol Zoo. Purposeful stylisation of appropriate subject matter is undertaken, showing high levels of design skill. Alongside design development, inventive adaptations of traditional craft techniques are successfully trialled.

COMMENTS

This Personal Investigation takes as its theme Exploring Cultures, chosen partly because of the candidate’s enthusiasm for working with the bright colours and patterns that often characterise the art of many cultures. Contextual research began with a visit to the V&A, taking particular interest in Japanese, African and Aboriginal artefacts. Contextual notes are interspersed with related visual investigations, some of these on a small scale using cut and torn paper collage. From photographs of some of the objects in the V&A, the unit shows developments from these, such as through the use of polystyrene prints. Studies of cultural artefacts form the basis of personal developments, e.g. working in oil pastel, collage, photomontage and weaving. The sketchbook continues with a mix of contextual and visual research in which stylistic features of cultural artefacts are innovatively developed. Visits to France inspired the candidate to look in some detail at aspects of local architecture, some of which formed the basis for a series of print designs. Another final outcome was a tapestry panel framed with pieces of driftwood.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Contextual and other references are well selected to explore a varied and interesting range of cultural artefacts. Investigations are focused and sustained with evidence of rigorous and sensitive analysis being undertaken utilising mature and perceptive critical skills. There is a clear understanding of purposes, meanings and contexts.

A fascinating combination of materials and processes are investigated, showing purposeful exploration of media and ideas and relationships between them. The ability to exploit stimulating sources to generate innovative possibilities is strongly evident together with competent handling across a range of new and traditional technologies.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS?

My chosen topic for my personal investigation is Contrasts. This is quite a broad topic in which I can explore sub themes and experiment with different media. I plan to research my topic through mind maps and photographs, both primary and secondary. As there are different types of contrasts such as contrast in colour, line, texture etc. I would mainly like to focus on colour contrasts. With this I can explore colour theory to gain a better understanding of this sub topic. I feel that looking at expressionist artists who boldly use colours in their work would help kick start my research.

COMMENTS

‘Contrasts’ is the theme selected for this Personal Investigation. Different interpretations of the theme are considered and explored, such as contrasts of light and shadow in a landscape. Contrasts of mood and colour are researched, with particular attention to colour theory. Studies of red and green, purple and yellow and blue and orange are investigated, alongside research into the work of artists such as Frank Marc. The depictions of soup tins by Andy Warhol, are interpreted in contrasting colours. The investigation then progresses to study the abstract expressionist, Roy Lichtenstein, with particular reference to his portraiture. This inspires a series of photographic portraits, exploiting the use of Photoshop and the technique referred to as Line Art. Incorporating the decorative background produced by marbling and with the addition of text, the candidate produces, as the main outcome, a competent graphic portrait.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

A limited number of contextual references are investigated in some depth and strongly focused on the main theme of the investigation. Colour theory, and the way colour has been used in particular contexts by selected artists, is explored to practically inform enquiry. Skills of analysis and evaluation are evident in both articulate written commentary and visual experimentations.

AO2 Creative Making

The theme of the unit is pursued in several directions through a range of different media and processes including observational studies in drawing and painting media, photography, marbling and computer-based image manipulation. Resources, materials and techniques are competently utilised and show good understanding of the relationships between working methods and outcomes.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Good recording skills are evident and are competently applied to facilitate research and enquiry. Investigations are thorough and productive in generating keen observations and developing insights. A particular strength of the investigation is its search for meaning and purpose and the ability to transfer skills and ideas to new situations.

The submission is well presented, mainly in workbook format, together with a technically competent large scale print with a good balance between visuals and articulate written commentary. COMMENTS

The Personal Investigation begins with a collection of images associated with Aztec/Mexican culture, including those that celebrate the Day of the Dead. Personal designs are produced by elaborating the form of a skull and other small scale design motifs. Some of these are further developed through the use of polystyrene repeat prints. Experiments with the process of marbling, lead to the production of woven paper strips, extending these with the use of coloured media and line decoration. From one of the designs, a small woven panel is produced. Aztec gods and goddesses are researched to inspire interpretations in coloured chalks, pen drawing and wax scratching. A fashion illustrator is contacted as part of contextual research and this has a formative influence on the rest of the unit. An extensive series of repeating pattern prints is included in the submission.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Suitable contextual sources are identified, with some analyses and evaluations that show basic understanding of purposes, meanings and the cultural context within which selected examples have been produced. Appropriate use is made of contextual study to develop new designs, but study of the work of a fashion illustrator is not helpful.

AO2 Creative Making

Printmaking techniques show a fair level of competence but design development is limited in scope. There is a fair understanding of relationships between processes, products, intentions and outcomes. Awareness of shape and pattern is more fully developed than for other visual elements, such as colour.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Skills of research and enquiry are fairly basic but there is evidence of ability to collect, organise and communicate ideas and observations, generally relevant to intentions. Recording skills are adequately developed and the quality of written, evaluative commentary is fair.

AO4 Personal Presentation

STRETCH and CHALLENGE

AO1 Contextual Understanding I would like to thoroughly research many different aspects of my theme and produce different tests in a variety of media, inspired by my findings. I will also be looking at the way other artists have dealt with these themes for inspiration. I intend to study contextual sources and gradually show what impact these have on producing my final piece. AO2 Creative Making In this section I aim to use my imagination to generate original outcomes relevant to my intentions that I will set out at the start of my project. I will experiment using a large variety of media and try to use new techniques rather than only focus on pencils and paints, media that I am most comfortable in using. The selected Controlled Assignment is Layers and the response begins with several sketchbook pages of photographs, clippings and drawings reflecting the theme. Several processes are explored, including lino-printing. Research is undertaken of readily accessible primary sources. Experimentation follows using a variety of traditional and new media, including Photoshop, closely linked with unusual, but relevant, contextual references which form the basis for personal developments. A visit to a local gallery to study in some detail the work of a contemporary weaver, has a decisive influence on subsequent practical developments. Experimentation with an unusual range of material and processes results in a considerable variety of small scale outcomes which are successfully combined in a three dimensional assemblage. A delicately woven and embellished textile is also presented as a final outcome.

STRETCH and CHALLENGE

AO1 Contextual Understanding Through studying my own family I plan to use common links to form a pathway of work whilst interpreting other artists work into my own throughout the module. Experimentation with questions and routes within my work will be an important element for me to include. AO2 Creative Making I plan to use different media such as photography, layering, oil pastel, acrylics etc. to take each idea and experiment to a higher level each time. All the use of Photoshop will play a big part within experimenting. AO3 Reflective Recording Every piece of work and research I produce will be evaluated and amended along with units combining different aspects together. Writing is important to me because I have so many ideas and pathways writing is the only way I will keep track of them. AO4 Personal Presentation I plan to make all my work flow in one direction with units and clear understanding of what is/has been done (for my benefit as well as the examiners). Being a very visually stimulated person, presentation is very important also. I studied my family as well as its history to make a basis of work and I planned to build upon. Personalising this project was extremely important to me because it was my own family who were influencing me to create this work, and this made it even more satisfying. I took my skills to another level by pushing boundaries of photography into an underwater scene and manipulated my work to become even better. ‘Stating’ the ‘obvious’ to my Assignment title was something I did not want to do so new ideas and different approaches were essential to stretch my abilities further.

COMMENTS

‘Profile the interests of a family’ is chosen as the Controlled Assignment stimulus for this unit. It begins with a graphically presented record of the candidate’s family tree, together with a collection of photographs showing the varied activities of family members. The unit then focuses on profiles of certain individuals with photographs of them displaying personal interests. Contextual reference is made to the layered photography of Ella Manor and the underwater photographs of Brian Stevenson. This research inspires the candidate to investigate movement in photography and, in particular, underwater swimming, experimenting with varying viewpoints and various editing techniques. The candidate’s evaluation of this work gives insight into challenges encountered. As well as a selection of colour photographic prints presented in the sketchbook, further outcomes are presented, including one which incorporates over-painting, informed by the photographs of David Hockney.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

A small, but relevant, range of contextual examples are identified, in line with intentions, and these inform and provide fresh impetus for further practical enquiries. I am planning to use lots of resources to be able to develop new ideas. I would like to research artists and designers that relate to fashion and the theme of Autumn. I feel that detailed research will help inspire me and help me understand different ways that I can approach my work.  AO2 Creative Making

I want to make a more complicated shape, maybe with gathered fuller sections. The dresses I have made in the past have been very modern, so to make something that is perhaps softer, more romantic. COMMENTS

The Controlled Assignment Layers is chosen by this candidate and the unit begins with the collection of images linked to the topic. There follows a series of sketchbook pages in which a viewfinder or close-up view of natural objects, such as peacock feathers and a cross-section of an orange are carefully observed. These are used as the basis for paper collage designs, painted small-scale weaving and coloured repeating polystyrene prints. Costume designers are then selected for contextual study and a couple of fashion designs are produced that reflect this research. The study promptly proceeds to look at the work of artists who showed particular interest in pattern and colour. This provides a stimulus for the candidate’s own colourful oil pastel studies. Photography is used to conduct further visual exploration, interpreting some subjects also in oil pastels and painted compositions. The two different strands of costume design and colour experimentation are brought together as a final outcome, using draped fabric and purchased textile leaves to produce a dressed mannequin.

The question I decided to do was ‘designing’. I wanted to focus on fashion design. I will use a wide range sources to gather fresh ideas. I will use a range of techniques but mainly I want to use textiles. I will analyse my resources and evaluate effectively. I will also show relationships. AO2 Creative Making

For this task I want to experiment with a range of techniques. I will use media in appropriate ways that fit my intentions. I will review my work regularly to show which techniques suit my intentions. AO3 Reflective Recording I will record detail explanations of what I intend to do. I will effectively display the research I have found. to evaluate I will use a range of methods. I will also analyse my progress and understanding. AO4 Personal Presentation I will present outcomes which are my own. I will also provide a response to these outcomes. I will present my work in chronological order making clear connections between various parts. I will use interesting form of Presentation. For this section of work I have stretched my abilities by making a whole garment using a pattern piece. I have only done this once before. I also made my own buttons. I have never done this before throughout this work I have used techniques that I am not confident with. All in all I stretched my abilities.

From the outset, the candidate has a clear idea of what is to be produced in response to the Controlled Assignment Designing. The first page of the sketchbook presents four different fashion designs and this is followed by several pages of collected material, together with pictorial interpretations of some of these. The unit shows exploration of a range of media to present fashion ideas, then turns to the study of architectural features for the purpose of producing fabric print designs. A variety of visual sources are investigated to form the basis for stencil prints and mono-prints. Further fashion design development is undertaken along with contextual references to the work of fashion designers and illustrators. A final outcome is realised as a fabric print which is made up into a top and skirt.

AO1 Contextual Understanding

Contextual sources refer to both pattern development and fashion design and there is fair evidence of analytical and evaluative skills being applied to certain examples to secure some understanding of purposes and contexts. However, there is insufficient depth of critical analysis to fully inform the candidate’s own designing.

AO2 Creative Making

Ideas of both pattern development and fashion design are explored using an appropriate range of materials and processes but these are not effectively brought together, neither are drafting skills sufficiently refined to fully support the design process. However, there are several successful examples of repeating patterns within the candidate’s workbook that demonstrate satisfactory understanding and control of formal elements.

AO3 Reflective Recording

Adequate recording skills are evident to document research and enquiry and written commentary is mostly of a fair standard and in appropriate form and style. There is a conscientious and productive approach to the study and information is collected, organised and communicated efficiently with evidence of the ability to reflect on work and progress to secure understanding.

AO4 Personal Presentation

Evidence of processes and outcomes show a personal approach and, although not fully resolved, there are clear connections made between the various constituent elements of the submission. Certain aspects of the unit, notably pattern making, show a fair amount of potential but the form selected for the final outcome does not adequately realise these stronger features.
