Points of interestLife in Northumberland between 1300 and 1600 wasdangerous and unstable. Important families such as theThirlwalls protected themselves against attack bybuilding strong defensible homes like the one here atThirlwall Castle. Legend has it that during a particularlyviolent raid, the Thirlwall family’s most prized possession,a jewel-encrusted gold table, was hidden by a servantdown a deep well where he and the table remain tothis day, protected by a magic spell!
Carvoran Roman Army Museum is well worth a visit forits unique collection of artefacts illustrating what lifewas like for Roman soldiers and a fascinating Eagle’s Eyefilm taking in points of interest along the Wall (openfrom Easter to October).
