December 2009 No. 455 2

Ralph “R.G.” Smithson Commodore

The CYC Board voted to increase slip and mooring fees for the usage period beginning on or after January 1, 2010. Slips fees will be $35 per month and moorings $15 per month. The additional revenue will be used specifically for much-needed maintenance on the club's docks and mooring fields.

The increased fees will be reflected on the No-vember 2009 billing since those bills are for us-age periods beginning on or after January 1, 2010. As per club policy, slip and mooring fees are billed in advance.

The CYC membership will once again have the option to either pay 2010 dues/fees in full by December 31, 2009, or on an installment plan. All dues, slip fees, other fees and applicable taxes will be billed in one statement. State-ments will be mailed in November or Decem-ber 2009 and are due, in full, by December 31, 2009, unless you opt for the installment plan described below.

Fines for missed race committee duty or work hours will not be billed in December and ARE NOT part of the installment plan. Fines will be billed separately after the first of the year.

Note: The envelope's postmark date will be the criteria by which timely payment is judged. The Treasurer will check the club mailbox on Janu-ary 1, 2010, and payments in the box at that time will be considered timely paid.

Option I

Members may pay their bill in full by December 31, 2009 (postmarked) and incur no late fees. Per club policy, if no payment is made by De-cember 31, 2009 (postmarked) a 5% late fee is added to the bill. If no payment is made by January 31, 2010 (postmarked) an additional 10% is added.

Option II

To utilize the installment option, 50% of the billed dues, fees and taxes must be paid by De-cember 31, 2009 (postmarked) with the remain-der paid by March 31, 2010 (postmarked). If the balance of fees are not paid by March 31, 2010 (postmarked), a 5% late fee will be added to the remaining balance. If no payment is made by April 30, 2010 (postmarked) an addi-tional 10% late fee will be added to the balance.

LATE FEES

Paying at least half your bill by December 31, 2009 will buy you up to three (3) months to pay the balance of your ‘10 bill. In this scenario no late fees will kick in until April 1, 2010.

Failure to pay at least half your bill by Decem-ber 31, 2009, however, will make you liable for the usual late fee of 5% beginning January 1, 2010 followed by an additional 10% on any bal-ance remaining February 1, 2010.

Any member with an unusual situation or hard-ship is encouraged to contact the Club Treas-urer prior to the dates when late payment pen-alties kick in. The Board is willing to consider, on a case-by-case basis, payment plans for members in unusual circumstances.

Following a report from the Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Bill Wickman, a new slate of officers was swept into office by accli-mation at the 2009 Annual Meeting. The 2010 Board will take office on January 1st.

Thanks to Bill and committee members Rebecca Bryant, and Jerry de Laurentis for securing a top-

notch board for next year.

CYC past member Jesse Tremaine passed away on Oct, 3, 2009 after a motorcy-cle accident on August, 13, 2009.

Jesse learned to sail at his grandparent’s home in Shelter Island, NY at an early age. During his membership at CYC he sailed a Lightning for a few years then sailed with current members Tom Hudson on his Thistle and with Dany Kopp on his S2 7.9

Jesse was a fine sailor who also sailed a Tornado Catamaran for a run at the Olympics.

I will be stepping into the shoes of Social Chair beginning in Janu-

ary. Needless to say, Ann Zimmerman leaves some pretty big

shoes to fill. She has done a tremendous job these past two years

and anyone who has attended or worked at a social event knows

what I’m talking about. She is committed, tireless and FUN!!

What we often don’t see is all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into

planning, organizing and pulling off these events, thanks to many help-

ing hands.

Several loyal members have willingly volunteered to chair some of the events, but we need several

more, plus worker bees to assist. Helping on social committees is a great way to fulfill work hours

and to get to know other club members. So please call or email to tell me you are willing and able to

help. And the next time you see Ann, tell her thanks for her dedicated service as she steps from So-

cial Chair into Education Chair.

Happy Holidays!!

December 2009 No. 455 5

These are the major facility projects completed in 2009:

Installed new security fence on West end of property

Cleared brush at West end for addi-tional trailer storage

LCUB installed 5 - 400 watt security lights

Removed 10 dead trees and cleared the East trailer area for additional space.

Rebuilt the summer slips and installed several new pylons.

Removed old pylons and ramp from water that was in front of the club house.

Installed rip-rap at the dinghy launch ramp.

Replaced siding on the boat house and dredged the bottom for boat clearance.

Installed new roof on Jack’s Shack.

Replaced the railway system due to deterioration, major repairs to the rail-way car and rebuilt the motor shed.

Added crushed stone to the driveway.

Extended the west launch ramp by 20 feet.

Painted the exterior of the club house.

Replaced the main water line that sup-plies our property.

Installed new security system for en-trance to the club property and added wireless internet access for the club house and patio.

These projects plus a multitude of smaller but no less important ones could not have been completed if not for the help of volunteers who gave their time, effort and energy. Thanks for your support and assistance this past year. I’m sure you’ll extend the same cooperation and support to my successor, Ross Ramsey in 2010.

CYC now has wireless internet access! Those that want access the password or WEP ID is: CYCSAILING (all caps and no

spaces). If you have problems accessing the internet, give me a call and I’ll do what I can to help, but I will not troubleshoot your com-puter for problems.

As we go into a new year I will share my views of what will happen concerning the facilities and grounds. For now the only

guarantee is there will be food at the work parties. Of course I'm open to any issues,

problems, and suggestions you may have.

Have a Happy Holiday Season and let’s have a great 2010 at CYC!

Skipper Keaton

Noon and his

crew, Luke

S c h w a r z e n -

traub. did not

win first place in

their division at

the October 24th

Charleston re-

gatta, but they

proved them-

selves the rescue

champs of the

day. During the

B-division’s second rotation the PRO aban-

doned racing in the face of four-foot seas

and steady 25 mph winds. It was in that last

race of the day that the young Farragut team

showed their metal.

Keaton and Luke saw the boat ahead sustain

a really hard involuntary jibe and subse-

quent capsize. Keaton turned their boat into

the wind, swam to the injured skipper, and

with Luke’s help pulled a bleeding sailor

into their boat. Luke then took to the water,

righted and bailed the turtled boat, and with

a shaken crew aboard followed Keaton back

to the change dock.

Farragut sailors

Amy Benefield

and Annie

Peretz admin-

istered first aid

to the injured

sailor, called

his parents, and

worried for

Keaton and

Luke, who had

returned to the

fray to finish

their race. Re-

gatta authorities expressed thanks to the Far-

ragut team, and the racing judge awarded

redress to Keaton and Luke for their valor

and skill. They finished sixth out of fifteen

in their division. Quite a day for two ninth-

graders sailing in only their second regatta.

Way to go Keaton and Luke! And con-

gratulations to CYC parents Missy, Chuck,

Jodie, and Eric for giving us two out-

standing young sailors.

December 2009 No. 455 7

[October 31 & November 1, 2009]

While this year’s Harvest Moon Regatta, sponsored by Horizon Yacht Club, started with rather

dubious weather on Saturday morning, the day was not a total loss. With one race completed

on Saturday, and two on Sunday, the Regatta ended in a competitive three race series, with

Concord Yacht Club taking 4 of the 6 top trophy positions.

In “Class A - Spinnaker Division,” Johnny Ballatin, with crew Kurt Finnie, John Tyner and Tom

Dorsey, sailed the B-25, “B-Happy,” to a First Place Finish. Todd Weir, and crew John Lin-

dahl, sailed his Santana 20 to capture Second Place Honors, in “Class A”. Dick Jones, of HYC,

took Third Place, with his J-30, Jeanne.

In “Class B – Non Spinnaker Division,” Jamie Northcutt, with her crew of Jeff Proulx, and Tom

Hogan, sailed, her Cal 28, “Hot Flash,” to win Second Place Honors. “She’s a Screamer,’ a Cata-

lina 22 sailed by Kathy Cheek-Hutson, with Dwight Guinn and Barbara Simpson as crew,

came screaming in to capture Third Place Honors. HYC’s John Gaston, sailing his J-33, “Little

Wing,” was the overall winner of “Class B.”

In “Class C – Cruiser Division,” CYC was somewhat at a disadvantage, with no participants

sailing in “Class C.” Maybe next year!

While CYC sailors and boats made a great showing in the Harvest Moon Regatta, the annual

HYC / CYC Challenge Cup Trophy sadly returned to Horizon Yacht Club. Well after all, it

was Halloween. Can you say “Trick or Treat!”

Aboard wooden sailing ships, the devil was the name given to the seam formed at the juncture where the covering board

that capped the ship’s sides met the deck planking. The same was particu-larly difficult to caulk because of its length, because there was so little space in which to perform the awkward task, and because there was so little standing between the devil and the sea. (The caulking was sealed by pouring hot pitch into the seam--a process known as “paying.”) Although aboard ship the complete expression was “There’ll be the devil to pay and only a half bucket of pitch,” being between the devil and the deep blue sea literally means being on the narrow plank (the covering board) with little room to maneuver. This colorful expression now means being caught in a tight spot with few options.

In coming ashore, both expressions lost their original meanings as landlub-bers assumed that the devil was Satan. Thus, “the devil to pay” has evolved to mean “to catch hell,” and “between the devil and the deep blue sea” means “no good option.” Helping to keep these colorful devils alive today is Ella Fitzgerald’s rendition of a hopeless love-hate relation-ship in Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler’s classic song “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.”
