Hear to Serve …

“RIGHT IS RIGHT,

EVEN IF NO ONE IS DOING IT.

WRONG IS WRONG,

EVEN IF EVERYONE IS DOING IT.” -St. Augustine

In our first reading today we hear how Peter and

the Apostles were trying to live out this saying even

though they were “bucking the system.” The Apostles

were going against the popular vote of the Jewish hierar-

chy and standing up for the truth even though the San-

hedrin and High Priests wanted nothing to do with the

truth. They wanted nothing to do with what is right.

They thought they had gotten rid of their problem,

namely Jesus the Christ, when they falsely accused Him

and had him put to death. I have to wonder if the San-

hedrin and High Priest were really against the message of

Christ because they thought it was wrong, or because the

message of Christ took away their personal power and

prestige with the people.

So, Peter and the rest of the Apostles

were going around and preaching and healing in the name

of Jesus. They were bringing life; they were bringing

Jesus to the people. The Apostles were doing the right

thing even though the powers to be were against it. The

Sanhedrin were afraid of losing their personal power and

prestige once again. Once again, they stepped in to try to

stop the living message of Christ.

The Apostles were jailed and scourged because

they did what was right. They obeyed God rather than

man. We have to ask ourselves if do we do the same. Do

we stand up against the popular vote today? Do we speak

out against the wrongs of our society even though the

popular vote deemed them acceptable in our society?

There are so many things that are harming us as

a society. Abortion has legalized the taking of human

life. Pornography cheapens human life and degrades the

gift of sex. Marriage is not held up in esteem as it once

was. As marriage goes, so does the life of the family, and

family life is what gives us a moral core. These things

are not right, even if it seems as though everyone is do-

ing them.

What about our spiritual lives? Do we give God

His due? Are we living out the Easter message of the

Resurrection and Eternal Life? Do we live our lives as if

Christ were alive in us? Jesus is the Lord of Life. We are

to be people of Life. We are called to share the LIFE of

Christ with others.

There are many things we have to take a stand

on. We cannot always remain silent and go along with the

popular vote. We have to be ready to stand up for what

is right even though we may be jeered at and labeled un-

popular. We need to support those who are doing what is
