THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

“But Peter and the apostles said in reply ‘We must obey God

rather than men. The God of our ancestors raised Jesus,

though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. God

exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant

Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins. We are witnesses of

these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to

those who obey him.’ So they left the Sanhedrin rejoicing that

they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of

the name.”

How amazing that in such a short time following Peter’s denial, he boldly proclaimed his faith before the very same authority. He had no trouble stating that he and his companions were witnesses of the grace of the paschal mystery. The Easter time is most appropriate for all to consider what it means to be a witness and how we can make this same mystery relevant to our needy world. We remind ourselves of the basic steps. We have an encounter with the Risen Christ, through the scriptures, a special event, through one of His ministers. We are drawn to form a relationship with Him through prayer. This leads us to become like Peter, knowing the Christ and then willingly speak of Him, and His role in our lives. Consider for a moment. What if Peter’s talk had not been recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. What if he had failed to answer the question posed by Jesus – ‘Peter do you love me?’ Peter indicated he was a witness. Am I?

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER First Reading: Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41 The high priest chastised Peter and the other apostles for continuing to preach when they had been ordered to stop. Peter replied he would rather obey God than men, considering God's power even over death. They are again warned to stop speaking of Jesus, and then freed. Second Reading: Revelation 5:11-14 John had a vision of many angels and all the living creatures of the world gathered around a throne. The angels cried out that the slain Lamb was worthy of receiving power, glory and praise. Then every creature on earth called out praise to God and the Lamb, and the elders fell down and worshipped. Gospel: John 21:1-19 Jesus appeared to the disciples for the third time since his resurrection while they were fishing. They hadn't caught anything, and then Jesus advised them to cast their net from the other side of the boat. When they did this, they caught a great number of fish. Jesus then asked Peter three times, "Do you love me?" When Peter said he did, Jesus asked him to tend and feed his sheep.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR THE YEAR OF MERCY? How about passing through a Holy Door? Passing through a Holy Door is part of the pilgrimage that all Catholics are encouraged to make, whether during a trip to Rome, or a trip to the cathedrals or specially designated churches in and around their own dioceses. These pilgrimages come with special graces, and they allow each of us to share in the many blessings of the Holy Year. Passing through the Holy Door symbolizes our leaving the world outside and entering into the realm of salvation. As Pope St. John Paul II said, the Holy Door “evokes the passage from sin to grace which every Christian is called to accomplish”

“By crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to embrace God’s mercy and dedicate

ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us.” Pope Francis (Misericordiae Vultu). (There are several Holy Doors in the surrounding area – St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC, Sacred Heart Basilica in

Newark, The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Middletown, NY)
