Third Film Deconstruction: Saw (Directed by James Wan) Theme: Slash Horror Background of directors style: Wan is very well known for the horror films he creates, he manages to appeal to many audiences. He was first made big after directing ‘Saw’, and other lowbudget movies. The clap of thunder and dark flickering background is a convention of horror movies, which means right from the start this film connotes horror. The film then begins with a LionsGate Film Production logo, doing more research into LGF, they are well known for producing major horror films. The next production in this sequence is Twisted Pictures, the effect of the barbed wire wrapped around the title and the sharp object around knotted in between them could represent / foreshadow people finding themselves into sadistic traps, and having to escape, despite the pain they may go through. The name of the productions itself implies something surreal. Doing further research on previous work from this production, I have found that Twisted Pictures are most well known for their horror genre films, which have led them to collaborate with the previous production shown: Lions Gate Films. This is then followed by a close up shot. The light that spans across the man's face, showing that his surroundings are pitch black. This becomes unnerving to the watcher, due to the close up of the man looking unconscious and the exaggerated sound of water, suggest that this character is underwater. The actual title of the film is then shown, the fact that this is shown after presenting the characters face, makes the watcher know that this male character is the main role.

There is then a second close up of the object  highlighting its importance. The nondiegetic sound of the man coming up from the water, would possibly make the viewer jump. There is a very quick close up of his leg, where we see that he is chained, this could link to the trapped symbol that was portrayed previously when the ‘Twisted Picture’ title was presented. The man is in the darkness, where we can only see him due to the object. The object then goes down the drain, which was his only source of lighting, which means he’s now in complete darkness

The next shot is a medium shot. Here we see the character feeling around almost like he is blond. This shows that even tho we are able to see him, he can not see anything at all, because there is no light. At this point both the character and the viewer are confused as to what’s happening. There is then a unknown voice, the man's panic is shown by his heavy breathing, the viewers eyes continue to be drawn to the pure black rigged line in the background

As the lights go on in cannon, we get a better view of the main character, there is then a shot that gives the viewer a look at the scene through the main character's eyes, we see the drastic adjustment from pure darkness to the brightness as his vision is hazy and then gradually begins to adapt. We then get a medium shot of the character who presumingly is the owner of the anonymous voice in the previous scene. In comparison to the main character, he is much more pale, bruised and sweaty. This implies that this character has been here longer, and by the looks of it, it has made him weaker. The camera then pans down revealing a dead man, bleeding from his head, the shot quickly changes to a tape recorder, then a hand gun. This could foreshadow the importance of these items later on in the film. The handgun also makes the user now realise how the character laying dead on the floor actually die. It then implies that this is some sort of game that has been played by other before, and losing results in death. The next shot is through the other characters eyes staring at the main character as he comes to realisation of where he is and begins to panic. We also see majority of the room, it is now clear that is it a rundown broken bathroom.
