Transcript of Third Annual Congress of the ASA Council Denver, CO › wp-content › uploads › 2018 › 01 ›...
February 15, 2018
Dear Colleagues:
We look forward to seeing you all again soon in Denver for the 3rd Annual Congress of the ASA
Council! Attached is the final agenda. This will be a very important meeting, and will strongly
help to determine the direction of the organization for the coming year. We have monumental
issues to discuss, so your thoughtful participation is paramount.
Prior to the meeting, please discuss with your boards the following:
1. We will be asking each state for a short update on the major activities, as well as current
membership numbers. Please discuss what your board would like to report to the greater
group. We do this each year at the start of the meeting.
2. We will be likely introducing a web platform proposal that would improve upon that
which is currently available. Please inquire of your boards if, in an ideal world of cost-
benefit and quality product, your state would be interested in a new platform. This would
integrate regular web features with member-management, RSS feed, and more. Details
to follow, but we’d like to get a sense of the general, theoretical interest. If your group
might be interested, at what point could you make this switch? (E.g. If you have a 2-year
contract with Wild Apricot or another provider, when would that be up?)
3. NCCAOM has graciously offered to sponsor a lunch meeting for us. What topics would
you be interested in having them address during this time-frame? Please send topics
ahead of time through Delegates to the designated ASA List thread.
4. We will have a discussion on NADA and NADA-only practitioners (e.g. not Licensed
Acupuncturists, but more NADA trained social workers and similar.) This is a
knowledge sharing discussion, and may help with the development of ASA policy around
this issue. The hope would be to identify the primary issues, Pro- and Con-, on this topic,
and begin to develop a working document so that states could consider this with their
memberships over the next year. Ultimately, we may be able to come to an
organizational standpoint on this, as we do not have one now. This is a “hot topic”
nationally at present, and, as the opioid crisis continues, will likely become more
pressing. This will also help us frame mechanisms for policy development for the group,
as well as fundamental directioning for the profession.
5. The California Acupuncture Association (CAA) has decided to hold off on membership
for now, as there are major organizational possibilities in California as Assemblymember
Evan Low directs discussions among stakeholder groups there. We will also be
discussing the situation in California, as it has strong repercussions throughout the
country.

6. Nebraska, Texas, and Louisiana will be petitioning for membership. They will also be
vetted prior. There are no competing groups in either state.
We are excited to have Ret. Col Kevin Galloway, Deputy Director, Strategic Communications
and Policy at the Defense &Veterans Center for Integrative Pain Management (DVCIPM),
speaking to the Council in Denver to discuss ways in which we can keep L.Acs in the overall
plan for delivery of acupuncture to our nation's active military and veterans and discussing tools
for pain rating that can assist in uniform data collection.
We will also be screening the first segment of the new ANF movie Getting to the Point. This
segment is on the use of acupuncture in a major children’s hospital.
In addition, we’ll be looking towards further possibility for a 2019 national conference, hearing
from a number of allied health groups, and spending a full day on Sunday advancing our
knowledge of legislation and how to lobby successfully, social media usage, committee and
board development, financial considerations, and other issues critical to successful state
associations.
We look forward to being together soon,
The Board of the American Society of Acupuncturists
David W. Miller, MD, LAc (Chair)
Amy Mager (Vice-Chair)
Candace Sarges, LAc (Treasurer, Immediate Past Chair)
LiMing Tseng, LAc (Secretary)
Eric R. Buckley, DOM (Member at Large)
Zeyiad Elias (Member at Large)
Kallie Guimond (Member at Large)
P.S. This letter can be shared with your boards, as can the agenda.
