To this end, I have sought to create a new Architecture for a time which would reflect an understanding of history, a new understanding of Museums and a new realization of the relationship between program and architectural space. Therefore this Museum is not only a response to a particular program, but an emblem of Hope." Daniel Libeskind used this museum a gift to the community damaged by the tragedy of the holocaust. By creating a space that presented both questions and answers to vital issues of humanity the museum is an artistic dialogue on the issues facing the city of Berlin in the aftermath of victimization and survival. The women and children’ center will present a similar dialogue on domestic violence. Safe Horizon Shelters – New York City, NY The safe horizon network of shelters has a hotline and referral service for victims of domestic abuse. It also provides services for victims of rape, stalking, child abuse, incest, trafficking, and homicide. It is currently the largest provider of domestic violence services in the country. For victims of domestic abuse the network provides 425 beds throughout five New York City boroughs. The shelters offer all the necessities of battling a cycle of abuse including the health care, career, counseling, refuge, and much more. The shelter is also a connection to many of the community programs that might support victims and their children. The safe horizon program also provides assistance to offenders hoping to change their pattern of abuse. Making victims aware of the resources they have available to them and compiling them to provide easy access is a goal of this women and children’s center. Even if the victim is not willing to stay in the shelter, the center will provide drop in access to resources she may not know are available. The exclusivity of the center will ensure victims a safe environment in which to gather themselves and see the eventual victory in their situation. www.safehorizon.org USING COERCION AND THREATS Making and/or carrying out threats to do something to hurt her, or making her do illegal things. MINIMIZING DENYING AND BLAMING Making light of the abuse and not taking her concerns about it seriously. It is said that Aphrodite was told her beloved was wounded. When she found him she sprinkled nectar into his blood and flowers sprang up. Kronos, Hestia’s father swallowed all of his children including first born Hestia. When Zeus was grown he engaged Okeanos’ daughter Metis who gave Kronos a drug that forced him to vomit forth his children. They all fought with Zeus a war against Kronos and the Titanes. "Next [after Metis] he [Zeus] led away (married?) bright Themis (Divine Law) who bare the Horai (Seasons), and Eunomia (Order), Dike (Justice), and blooming (thallô) Eirene (Peace), who mind the works of mortal men, and the Moirai (Fates) to whom wise Zeus gave the greatest honour, Klotho, and Lakhesis, and Atropos who give mortal men evil and good to have." "Here [in this city] dwells Eunomia (Good Governance) and that unsullied fountain Dike (Justice), her sister, sure support of cities; and Eirene (Peace) of the same kin, who are the stewards of wealth for mankind--three glorious daughters of wise-counseled Themis. Far from their path they hold proud Hybris (Insolence), fierce-hearted mother of full-fed Koros (Disdain) . . . Hera was the only truly married Goddess among the Olympians. The wife of Zeus king of the Gods she was often worshipped at Greek temples in common with Zeus himself. “She seems to have been a divinity of a purely ethical character, and not the representative of any particular physical power manifested in nature; her power and wisdom appear in her being the protectress and preserver of the state and of social institutions.” "Hygeia (Health), most revered of the blessed ones among mortals, may I dwell with you for what is left of my life, and may you graciously keep company with me: for any joy in wealth or in children or in a king’s godlike rule over men or in the desires which we hunt with the hidden nets of Aphrodite, any other delight or respite from toils that has been revealed by the gods to men, with you, blessed Hygeia, it flourishes and shines in the converse of the Kharites; and without you no man is happy." My thesis will investigate how a structure can connect domestic violence victims with the tools needed to overcome a cycle of control. As the structure outlines the cycle of control, the design will inform the means of opposition. This will be supported by a schedule of empowerment, demonstrated by the Greek worship of the powers of a Goddess. Events Entry The entry will be comforting and warm with a clear display of the guard and security equipment that allows for constant surveillance – victims should feel an automatic sense of safety. This allows them to focus on using the center’s resources. Expectation of Victory The vision of Nike winged facing away as you enter the center alludes to her willing- ness to lead victims to victory. She stands very conspicuous and facing a mirror which provides women entering the center a view of themselves just behind her accompanying her into battle and eventual defeat of and the cycle of control. Tailored to Victim’s Situation All resources being available to any woman in the center will allow for the accomplishment of goals as quickly or as slowly as the victim is comfortable progressing. Even the sleeping spaces will be an easily reprogrammable system to accommodate a woman and her children. What Pertaining to my thesis question, this space will be a response to the general model of a battered women shelter. Not only will it avoid being simply a shelter, but it will take on the task of being a center committed to the aid of domestic violence victims. The design will inform the victim of available resources to bring about a change in their current situation. It will be not only a temporary shelter, but a place where victims can come and go as needed. Where Fulton Market Area – Chicago, IL Fulton Market is a vibrant and busy area that reminds its visitors of life’s joy. The large buildings flow into each other and allow for the successful placement of both a decoy and actual entrance. The area is also not the typical site for a shelter. The traffic of the area makes it easy to blend in or explain venturing to the area. Art galleries, restaurants, and shops may inspire someone to avoid isolation and appreciate life again. Who The doors will be open to physically abused women and their children. Though any woman is welcome if she is seeking refuge from an abusive partner, there will be an effort to appeal to all women despite their socio-economic status. Efforts will be made to consider the requests and perspective of any woman that is subject to a cycle of control. The center staff will understand what assistance women may require, and help victims understand that domestic violence is a universal women’s issue and resources are available. Why Every 9 seconds a woman is physically abused by her husband. 42% of murdered women are killed by their intimate partners. Domestic violence is repetitive in nature: about 1 in 5 women victimized by their spouse or ex-spouse reported that they had been a victim of a series of at least 3 assaults in the last 6 months. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that 95% of assaults on spouses or ex-spouses are committed by men against women. (www.asafeplaceforhelp.org)
