Preface

For a matter of record a lot of this information came from Mary JaneUjimoto, of Victoria, British Columbia. She e-mailed the results of herresearch on the Rae family and the branching off into the Rattray, Manville,Duff and Menhenick families. Mary Jane is related back to the Rae family.I am acknowledging the work that Mary Jane has done in her researching inthe listing of my sources, along with the material found in theCommemorative Biographical Record of the County Of Lambton, Ontario,Compiled by J.H. Beers & Co., Toronto. These are biographical sketchesof Prominent and representative citizens and many of the early settledfamilies.

Also Lambton County Pioneer Profiles, authored by Lambton County BranchOntario Genealogical Society, with material submitted by Pat Mclean, whosehusband is a great grandson of George McLean. My great-greatgrandmother Ellen Bell' sister, Rachel Bell married William McLean, thefather of George McLean. I hope I got that right. If not I'm sure I willhear about it.

This work is not complete, that is to say the research is ongoing all thetime. I'm experimenting on the format of the presentation of the material,so as the greatest ease of reading prevales.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------From a biographical sketch by Victor Lauriston

Robert Rae, early Bosanquet figure, was a power in politics.A man who loomed large in the municipal history of Lambton was the Bosanquetpioneern Robert Rae. Something like 43 years elapsed between his firstelection to the Township Council and his final service as county comminsioner. He served six terms as warden of Lambton, an all time record for the county, and a quarter century lay between his first and last election to that office.

Rae was born in Lesmahagow, a Lanarkshire village, on November 16, 1826,the son of Robert and Agnes (Hamilton) Rae, and the second of their fourchildren. When five years old and four months old, he emigrated with hisparents to Canada. After a tedious seven weeks' voyage, during which thesailing ship "Nailor" ran the gauntlet of severe storms and lay four days in avast ice field, they reached Quebec.

They continued by the steamer "Chambly" to Montreal, thence by Durham boatup the St. Lawrence to Prescott; thence on the steamer "William the Fourth" toYork--the trip from Quebec to what is now Toronto consuming three weeks. Aftera brief sojourn with a hospitable friend, Mrs. Alexander Gibb, the family went onto visit an uncle, Robert Hamilton, in Scarborough Township.

Hamilton was engaged in clearing a fallow, and the elder Robert Rae volunteeredto assist. The first large tree he undertook to cut fell in the wrong direction, and

the heavy trunk crushed him to death. This was on June 28, 1832, just fourweeks after his landing in Toronto.

For a few months, the widow and four small children made their home in a cabinon the Hamilton farm. That fall, they rented 15 acres on the Kingston road. Ineight years there they saved enough money to purchase a 30- acre propertynear the present site of Malvern. All this meant hard work for the younger Robert Rae, work which cuthim off from all opportunity of securing an education.

At 16, the boy was unable to write his name, and had no knowledge ofarithmetic or grammar; but at the age of seven, he had completely mastered theShorter Catechism, and by attending Sabbath School and Bible Class, hebecame well grounded in scriptural subjects.

In 1840 when Robert was 14, the family had moved to a 30-acre bush farm eastof the Markham road, where his hard work helped to make it highly productive. From 16 to 19, he was able to attend for six weeks each winter, and so rapidwas his progress, he commences the study of the classics with a view toentering a profession. Here, too, he made good headway; but at the end of ayear the ambition veered toward mercantile pursuits, though it was several yearsbefore he had a chance to gratify them.

At 24, he became a clerk in the Strachan & Redford grocery in Toronto. Thefollowing spring he opened a small store on the Markham road.

Meanwhile the mother had sold the 30-acre farm and the family had bought 200acres in Bosanquet, then largely a wilderness. The young storekeeper soldhis business and in January, 1852, after a five days' journey by team, the familyreached their location on Lot 23, Con. 9, Bosanquet, where in the course of thewinter, they erected a log shanty. Robert and his brother, Archibald, spent twoyears clearing the farm. Later they sold this and bought land near the thrivingVillage of Pine Hill. The village, about that time, was rechristened Widder, inhonor of Frederick Widder, head of the Canada Company.

In 1854, Rae, in partnership with James Harrower, opened the second generalstore at Widder. The following year he married Rachel Jane Smith, of Warwick.Later he sold his interest in the partnership to Murdo McLeay, of Warwick, andopened a general store in his own acoount.

In 1856, Rae was elected to the Bosanquet Township Council, an office he heldfour years. In 1860, he was elected reeved, a position he continued to hold--except for one year--up to 1887. In 1863, he was unanimously elected wardenof Lambton, and re-elected for 1864 and 1867.

When , on March 6, 1867, a Liberal convention was called in Sarnia to nominatea candidate for the new Dominion Parliament, an infomal ballot was taken onpossible candidates for the Legislature. T.B. Pardee received 32 votes, with 22for Rae and 12 for Fred Davis. The same evening, however, a representativegathering of the Reform Party at the Belchamber Hotel tendered the provincialto Robert Rae.Rae hesitated, as he had been supporting Colonel Davis. The meetingthereupon, refusing to delay the matter, nominated Pardee. Rae decided tocontest the election as an independent. A little later, he accepted a nominationtendered him at a Conservative convention at Wyoming. He had previously been a strong Reformer, and the acceptance of theConservative nomination place him in an quivocal position. Feeling in bothparties was strong against men who changed their political affiliation. As aresult, Rae failed to secure strong support from either party, and T.B. Pardee

went on to a distinguished career in provincial politics. This fiasco, however, did not shake Lambton's confidence in Rae as amunicipal leader. Bosanquet contiuned to elect him reeve and LambtonCounty Council re-elected him warden for 1868 and 1869.Rae, meanwhile, had transferred his business interests from Widder Village toWidder Station, on the Grand Trunk. Widder Station later became the Villageof Thedford. In 1876, Rae left Thedford to open partnership with Alfred Lofft, ofSt. Marys. That year was the one break in his service as reeve. In 1877, whilehe was still living in Forest, Bosanquet unanimously elected him reeve, and hereturned to Thedford later the same year.He continued to serve till 1887, when he was elected warden of Lambton for thesixth time. He then retired from the post he had held so long. In 1892, however,he went back to the County Council as reeve of Thedford, and in 1897, when theCounty Councils Act established a new system of county commisioners, theveteran was elected to represent District 6 for a two-year term. Owing to illhealth, he did not offer for re-election in 1900.These were not all his municipal interests. For many years he was schooltrustee of S.S. 11, Bosanquet, and secretary-treasurer. Only July 17, 1856,he was appointed postmaster at Widder, and following his removal to WidderStation ( later Thedford), he was named postmaster there in 1862. Prior toConfederation, the Macdonald Government named him a justice of the peace, and in his time he was one of the oldest magistrates in Ontario. In his lateryears, following his retirement from the County Council, he was a member ofthe Thedford Public Library Board.Mr. and Mrs. Rae lived to celebrate their golden wedding on July 30, 1905.The great occasion was marred only by the fact that their seven children hadmade new homes in the West, and were unable to attend. In their time thecouple had seen amazing changes in Bosanquet, in Lambton County, and inCanada. Rae died at Sarnia on March 25, 1912, at the age of 86.

From the Forest Standard, March 26, 1908:------------------------

Robert Rae, visited his brother-in-law, Wm. Smith, 4th line, who lately had the misfortune to dislocatehis shoulder. Mr. Rae, who has passed his 80th year, is as bright mentally and as active physically asmany men half his years.------Watford Guide.

Robert Rae and Rachel Jane Smith were married in London - Perhaps because there was a FreeChurch in London, and they were members.

From the Dumfries-Galloway-L Archives RootsWeb.com: Religious Life in Sout-West Scotland Since 1560 by M. Brown (1960) describes the establishment ofthe Free Church."In May 1843, 400 ministers headed by Dr. Thomas Chalmers left the General Assembly of The Churchof Scotland. They were men of great courage not only in expressing their religious beliefs but insacrificing their livelihoods and domestic security. Within four years they had raised enough money tobuild 654 new churches and almost every parish had a Free Church as well as a Parish Church."In 1929 the two Churches reunited, however their may be some congregations under the banner of theFree Church existing.

Notes for Arthur McLean Rae:

Note from Mary Jane Ujimoto:

Arthur McLean Rae joined the Canadian Over-Seas Epeditionary Force on 19 April1916 in Pouce Coupe, Alberta. (Pouce Coupe is actually in British Columbia, but it isalmost on the Alberta border). On his Attestation Paper he gives his father's nameas Robert Rae of Hamilton, Ontario. There were more than one Robert Rae's inHamilton at the time, but Arthur also included the street address as 2? SophiaStreet. As previously mentioned, his brother, Walter Rae crossed the border intoand from Michigan several times. On one of his wife's border crossing records in1915, her father-in-law is given as living at 28 Sophia Street in Hamilton, Ontario. There are 2 Arthur Rae's born in 1884 in Ontario in the 1906 census, one inWinnipeg, and one in Battleford Saskatchewan. My guess is that he is the one livingin Battleford as he gives his occupation on his Attestation Paper as "farmer".Interesting that his two surviving brothers became machinists, and he was a farmer.

Notes for Robert Rae Manville:ONE CANADA Vol 1 refers to Robert Rae Manville opposing William Lyon McKenzieKing in the 1940 Federal Election. He came a close second.

National-Unity is the banner under which Robert Rae Manville stood as a candidatein Prince Albert in the 1940 federal election in Canada. The Liberal candidate in theriding was Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and Manville, a merchant, placed second with 7,534 votes and 41% of the vote, less than 1,000 votes behindthe Prime Minister.

Manville was endorsed by the "National Government" which was the name theConservative Party used in the 1940 election under the leadership of Robert Manion. There was no Social Credit candidate in Prince Albert while there was a SocialCredit-National Unity candidate in nearby Saskatoon City. It is unclear if Manville ranas a "National Unity" candidate because he was also endorsed by Social Credit.

Beers biographical records list his name as Merline. It should be Merlin.

KIA WWI at age 15. No grave, but name on Vimy Memorial.

Service Number: 101357Age: 15Force: ArmyUnit: Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment)Division: 31st Bn.

British Columbia archives says his place of birth was "Columbia". At the time of the1901 census (before his birth) his parents were living in Columbia City, Yale &Cariboo District, BC. Columbia City has disappeared, but must have been veryclose to Grand Forks. Merlin lied on his attestation paper and said that his birthdatewas April 27, 1899. The Attestation papers say his parents were living atKississing, Manitoba.

Then their is this from the Edmonton Bulletin newspaper, 11Oct1915 where itshows that maybe his parents were living at Grand Prairie, Alberta instead.

LOYALTY TO THE EMPIREGRANDE PRAIRIE SHOWS LOYALTY TO THE EMPIRE

Has Sent Many Drafts of Troops-- 45 Arrived Yesterday

LEAVE BUSINESS AND FAMILIES BEHIND

Some of Finest Men Physically That Have Enlisted Here

The Grande Prairie district, although hitherto far removed from the centres ofpopulation, can fairly claim to be as loyal, if not more loyal, than any other district inCanada. As soon as war was declared a number of the residents, many of themhomesteaders, at once answered the call of duty, and proceeded to the cold country, their former home in many cases, and either secured commissions or joined theranks. Since then several drafts have been secured in the Grande Prairie district forthe 63rd and 66th battalions, and yesterday morning another contingent of forty-fivearrived in the city for the 66th, making in all about two hundred men from GrandePrairie who have responded to the empire call. Better still, it is stated that manymore men will join as soon as they have completed their threshing operations, sothat their families will not be unduly inconvenienced in the immediate future.

Leave Families Behind

Several of the men who arrived in the city yesterday are married, and have left wivesand small children behind them, but still are eager for the fray. Nothing moreinspiring for instance, can be found than the statement of one of them, JosephAlfred Alphonse Boulanger, brother of Dr. Boulanger, of Edmonton, who said lastnight, " I have a gent's furnishing and millinery business in Grande Prairie City, and awife and three small children, but I think it is my duty to go to the front." If only someof the single men in Toronto, for instance, could have heard his words.Another recruit is Henry Robertson, the well-known auctioneer of Grande PrairieCity, popularly known as " The colonel," who is married and has a grown-up family. His hair is graying rapidly, but his heart is young and his feet are nimble, and hewould not be satisfied until his attestation papers were signed. Who would refuse tojoin with such an example to follow?George Henry Peebles, a home steader near Grande Prairie City, who is marriedand has a family, decided to go to the front, "If you are going," said Harold, his son, "

15

then I am going too, or else I will run away and join at Edmonton." And so there theyare, father and son, ready to fight side by side for the good old flag.

Leaves 800-Acre Farm

Albert E. W. Roberts, a homesteader near Lake Saskatoon, has a farm of eighthundred acres, and is married, with one child, but that did not deter him from joiningthe colors. Hudson P. Pitman, of Bear Lake, has some brothers at the front, andleaves a widowed mother behind him. The Call, "Your King and country need you,"did not fall on deaf ears in his case. Merlin Rae, another of the recruits, is the son ofWm. Rae, the Grande Prairie City lawyer, who was candidate for provincial honorsat the last election. One of the recruits is Rev. J. W. McDonald, the Anglican clergyman at GrandePrairie City, with supervision over the surrounding territory. He has been stationedthere about sixteen months, and is very popular.Lieut. Mead came part of the way with the party, but returned in order to bring outanother contingent shortly. Some of yesterday's recruits were laborers on theGrande Prairie branch railway, now under construction.

Some of Finest Men

Dr. Hislop, who medically examined the men yesterday, said they were some of thefinest men from a physical point of view who had enlisted locally. The full list of the men is as follows:Jospeh Alfred Boulanger, merchant, Grande Prairie City.Gerald Henry Patterson, homesteader, Bear Lake.John Cecil Hall, homesteader, Lake Saskatoon.William Bousfield, homesteader, Grande Prairie City.Harry Hutchinson, homesteader, Bear Lake.George Henry Peebles, homesteader, Grande Prairie City.Geo.
