I The Finest Scandinavia

FROM THE EDITOR

I have been fortunate to play many of the world’s greatest clubs andcourses and occasionally been disappointed by a few (unnamed)experiences where the ‘feel’ and atmosphere didn't do the great coursejustice or fulfil my expectations.

A golf club these days has to tick multiple boxes - it’s not good enoughanymore to just have an immaculate green or a pretty club house.

Whether you are seeking the Norse experience, a relaxingbreak, a business or commercial stop-over or just a great golf get away,,we believe this souvenir will provide you with those clubs and golfcourses worth travelling to enjoy. At the very least you will learn ofthese terrific venues that perhaps have flown under the radar.

I hope you enjoy the book and the great clubs andexperiences we offer. Go and visit the clubs and let me know what youthink.

Iceland: Has Europe’s largest National Park.In 2008, Iceland embarked on a natureconservation project on a hitherto unparallelledscale with the establishment of the 12,000 sq kmVatnajökull National Park. Few if any regions inthe world offer such a mixture of ice, volcanic andgeothermal features..

Few other places in the world, offer such a diverserange of things to do: c.65 golf courses – many ofsupreme quality, glacier walking, whale watching, relaxing in open air thermal baths, or trying suchicelandic delicacies as puffin and rotten shark!

Iceland, offers golfers the intriguing element ofplaying in the midnight sun. That’s why theAkureyri club, in the north of the island, runs a36-hole international open tournament at the endof June. The first ball is played just beforemidnight and the tournament lasts until earlymorning.

Norway: Norway shares the same latitude asAlaska, Greenland and Siberia, but comparedto these areas, Norway has a temperate, verypleasant climate. From Late June, to earlyAugust the weather is at its warmest and thedays are long and bright. Temperatures in Julyand August can reach 25°C - 30°C.

Norwegian golf is growing fast and thequality of many of Norway’s courses rivals anyof the top courses in the World. Most of its c.156 golf courses are near Oslo, Bergen,Trondheim, or Stavanger, so easy enough, tocombine an afternoon tee time with yourfamily holiday activities Apres Golf!

Just chill out and enjoy warm Norwegianhospitality, delicious food and drink andreally eye catching scenery.

GOLF IN SCANDINAVIA

THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA 11

Thorbjørn Olesen is one of the hottest names in golf and he’s the man everyoneis talking about right now but the 23-year-old Danish star, is taking it all in hisstride.

Olesen only turned pro in 2008, but his career has been on a rapid upward trajec-tory since then and it shows no sign of slowing down. Three wins in the third tierNordic League in 2009 earned him promotion to the second tier Challenge Tourthe following year but it was clear he was destined for bigger things. He claimedsix top 10’ including victory in The Princess Open to spring straight up to The Eu-ropean Tour for the 2011 season. He made an immediate impact, taking the run-ner-up spot at the opening event of the season, the Alfred Dunhill Championship, and adding another two second-place finishes in a stellar debut season that end-ed with a 19th place finish in his DP World Tour Championship debut for 48th po-sition on The Race to Dubai. Another new experience saw him representDenmark alongside Anders Hansen in the World Cup for the first time as the pairtied for 13th.His European Tour breakthrough followed in the 2012-12 season when he beatEnglishman Chris Wood by a stroke to win the Sicilian Open title before puttinghis name in lights at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s where he took a top 10 in onlyhis second Open Championship appearance. It was a sign of things to come as Thorbjørn announced himself to US golf fanslast month with a stunning performance in his maiden outing at the Masters, closing with consecutive 68’s to take a share of sixth place, five back from AdamScott and Angel Cabrera’s finishing score of 9-under 279. Only an opening 78stopped him becoming only the fourth player ever to win a Green Jacket at thefirst attempt. He grew up in the frosty town of Hareskov, just outside Copenhagen, wheresnow-covered courses during the winter meant practice was nearly impossiblefor four months of the year but this cool customer undoubtedly looks ready toset the world on fire.

GREAT DANETHE

Thorbjørn Olesen

THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA 13

Thorbjørn Olesen

As Olesen commented: “ I’ve been a pro for just over fiveyears now, so I’ve learned a lot. I’ve felt for quite a whilethat my game has been good enough to compete at the toplevel but I’ve still got a lot more to learn. Golf is one ofthose games where you’ll never stop learning so you’re al-ways trying to improve.I loved the Masters in 2013, it’s a special place. Drivingdown Magnolia Lane and then into the clubhouse, there isso much history surrounding you. The people there go outof their way to do everything for you, too. The facilities, thecondition of the course, the crowds, the par 3 course, eve-rything, it’s just incredible. It was great to be a part of it. I’mnot sure if there is a secret to doing well there, although it’sreally important to be able to shape the ball I think and toknow where not to miss it. The greens are really complex, too, and it was difficult to learn them so quickly. If it wasn’t for his first round (high) score, Olesen may evenhave been in string contention to win the Masters. At the Open, too, Olesen has already had a string of out-standing performances. He recalls: “I had a 25 foot birdieputt on the 18th on Friday evening and knew if I holed it Iwould be playing with Tiger, having looked at the hugeleader board. I was nervous for the first few holes but thensettled down and played some really good golf. The crowdwas huge but that is what I want to be part of.

Although getting close, no Dane has yet to win a Majortournament, and perhaps Olesen may be the inspirationDenmark has been waiting for to break the hoodoo! In2003, Thomas Bjørn had a terrific opportunity at Royal StGeorges, but for whatever reason, it fell apart and neverhappened.

Looking into the future, Olesen remains level headed, butfiercely competitive: ”I’d love to be winning Majors andplaying in Ryder Cups. I’d love to be part of that Team but, more importantly - be a part of a winning team. I don’t re-ally have a time frame. You can’t rush these things and as Isaid, you don’t have rights over tournament wins, so I’ll bepatient and take my chances when they come hopefully”.

Olesen quotes his inspiration to becoming a professionalgolfer through watching Thomas Bjørn and Tiger Woods. He also attributes his rise to fame and success thus far tothe influence of his parents, his coach (who he has workedwith continually since he was 10 years old) and Sir AlexFerguson (!) via his determination and will to win. Anywayyou look at it, Olesen is a major talent and one whichthrough the natural Danish game and personality will mostcertainly feature for many years to come at the top of thegame.

This is an achievement made more remarkable given Sweden’slong winters, but unsurprising given the quality of Sweden’s golfcourses.Golf in Sweden, which has around 470 golf clubs with 474,000members, is booming. Here you will find championship coursessuch as Bro Hof Castle near Stockholm, Barsebäck GCC down southand Halmstad GC on the west coast. Given Sweden’s geographyand topography, it is blessed with golfing landscapes; courseshewn from rugged coastline and others that carve through giantforests with winding streams.Sweden offers golfers mild temperatures, mostly dry conditions, and long hours of daylight making the golf season in Swedenexcellent for play. Golfers in Sweden's southern golf area, Skåne,traditionally begin playing their favorite golf courses around thefirst week of April.  As spring's warm temperatures begin to movenorth, golfers in Sweden limber their golfing muscles and, by theend of May, most areas of Sweden are ready for golf.In Sweden, golf trips can be combined with everything that yourheart desires. Bro Hof Slott Golf Club

Choose between The Castle Course, a challenging first-rate beauty with a Scottish links character and small chal-lenging bunkers, and The Stadium Course, one of Europe’sabsolute finest courses and either way you are spoilt forchoice!

Virtually all observers and professional writers alike agreethat these really are special places and courses. Uponreflection, you’d better play both, as they offer differentchallenges and throw up their own conundrums whilstallowing you to inhale such a special atmosphere andfeeling of privilege when you play through each hole andeach round.

In Sweden, Golf Digest ranked the ‘Stadium course’ infirst place (once again) whilst ‘The Castle course’ placedfifth - so competition is high, even between these twoworld class courses!

Bro Hof Slott is regularly ranked in the world’s top coursesin every (and any) course ranking. Considering there aremore than 32,000 golf clubs across the world and tastesdiffer of course, more-the-remarkable given both appearsin recognised top 50’s lists.

omance, history, desire and tradition. Just four words thatdon’t come close to summing up even a fraction of one of thefinest Golf Clubs in the World. Bro Hof Slott is a delight to all thesenses.

Outside of the UK, The Stadium course is considered the secondbest course in Europe (according to many journalists), The Castlecourse, similarly, is thought of in such terms. We look for theexperience, the charm and challenge, the facilities and the club inan overall capacity before we can honestly recommend or raveabout any course or club.

From tee-off to the final hole, from the changing room hot tubs toexquisite lunches on the terrace, this is an experience you’llremember for the rest of your life.

Bro Hof Slott is located in Upplands-Bro near Stockholm, Sweden, approx. 30 minutes’ drive from the city centre. Superlatives aredifficult to begin to describe the quality and feeling when youarrive and play these landmark courses. A ‘Things to do beforeyou die’ list, has to include both the Stadium and Castle coursesat Bro Hof Slott. The main gates, in keeping with the elegance and grandeur, presenta view of the Castle. You should have goose bumps all over by thispoint!)

22 THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA

It’s taken centuries to create and develop this area, even beforethe recent huge investments from the Club and its history andtraditions are as great as they are esteemed. In the Middle Ages,Brogård (now Bro Hof Slott) was a royal demesne estate. TheRålamb, Funck, Ribbing, Cederhielm, Sparre and Reuterskiöldfamilies all owned it at one time or another and under thedynamic management of Count Johan Sparre (1856-1938), theestate flourished.

The existing castle, which was designed by architect HermanHolmgren and built in 1888, was given a Baroque architecturalstyle with Empirical elements, as was typical of the period.

Through various leases and sales, wealthy businessman BjörnÖrås purchased the property in 2002 and began its transforma-tion into the Bro Hof Slott Golf Club we see today. The Castlehas been completely and meticulously renovated to recreate itsoriginal appearance and is a breath taking feature and surely oneof the world’s great Club residences.

One of the rooms, the 'Sparre Room', is named after the afore-mentioned Count Johan and is adorned with befitting furnish-ings and a portrait of the Count himself. The current banquethall, which previously consisted of two unfurnished storagerooms, has been restored, painted and again looks and feelstreasured, exquisite and as though you are immersed in Royalhistory.

The garden surrounding the castle has been redesigned withgreen open spaces and those period-typical gates we men-tioned. A further 250 hectares off the golf course is managedby Bro Hof Slott and is dedicated to Nature (which flourish-es) and is enjoyed by a plethora of wildlife and too manyspecies of birds to list. The golf development has resulted in the preservation andmaintenance of the cultural and natural heritage of the area, safeguarding this astonishing landmark and area for genera-tions to come and visitors from across the globe.

It is undeniably Swedish, though it has many of the bestattributes of US, Scottish and Links courses. The fairways, greens, approaches, tees, the rough (!) – In fact everything isperfect. It is managed and maintained expertly. The level ofcommitment and skill required to develop and keep all fea-tures in their pristine state is truly testament to the expertmanagement and team ability Bro Hof Slott has in abundance.

"We are very proud and happy about the high ranking that weget in Sweden, Europe and Worldwide. It's amazing that acourse in northern Stockholm can compete world-wide," theproud owner, Björn Örås says of his prized Stadium Course.

Though every part of the course is ideal and cared for perfect-ly, not for one second do you feel awkward or in awe.

From tee-off to the final hole, from thechanging room hot tubs to exquisite luncheson the terrace, this is an experience you’llremember for the rest of your life… ”

24 THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA

You will be made to feel welcome, part of thefamily and cared for in the same manner aseach part of the grounds (which is a goodthing!). The luxurious and superb facilities, equipment and level of service, serve only toexpand and take your experience further intogolf heaven.

The “Boka Bord” restaurant would be in keep-ing with many of the top restaurants anywhere, golfing or otherwise. Again, service and com-mitment from the staff make this more thanjust top quality food and drink. The friendlysmiles and genuine feeling of warmth youreceive make this special – very special, butwith all the comfort and relaxation you couldwish to enjoy.

The par 72, 18-hole Stadium Course, which, like the estate's second Championship layout, the Castle course, was designed by US golfcourse architect, Robert Trent Jones Jnr,opened its doors to the public in 2007 and isamongst the very longest in Europe, stretch-ing up to 6 955 metres (7 607 yards) from itsback tees.

Jones commented: “Everything is big at BroHof. The holes are longer, greens bigger, course has more water and bunkers larger andwell placed. Besides which, the wind is al-ways part of the game. On the dogleg holes, you not only have to hit the ball a long way,you have to get it to stop too!”

The Stadiums thick roughs and elevatedgreens will really punish wayward approach-es and drives, its design tempts and teases youin equal measure. The twists and turns encour-age you to add a little risk into your game –irrespective of whether you are a regular orlong hitter, though longer shots may be handyhere.

Choose to tee up from the white or black teesand each hole presents a brand new set ofchallenges and add a few notches to the diffi-culty...

The Castle Course, which opened in 2009, isshorter and a little more forgiving though fullof its own special challenges and personality. It includes numerous spectacular holes and itsgreens are fast and true.

Our first goal was to create the best GolfCourse in Sweden. Our next goal is to havethe best course in Europe. Björn Örås”“

weden is blessed with some of the finest quality andplaying courses anywhere. So selecting the very finest was achallenge in itself. Occasionally, a selection process is simpli-fied when stand-out candidates engrave their name on the elitelist immediately leaving only a few other options to be chosenfrom.Ullna GC in Sweden is one of those easy selections – likehaving Lionel Messi in your squad, when available, he selectshimself….he plays.

Ullna golf club is situated approximately 12 miles from Stock-holm in Sweden, beside Lake Ullna (which often doubles inthe winter months as an ice skating rink). The course and clubwas founded in 1981 by Sven Tumba and officially inaugurat-ed by HRH Prince Bertil on August 27 that same year.Tumba (born Sven Olof Gunnar Johansson -27 August 1931-1st October 2011) was one of the most prominent Swedish icehockey players of the 1950s and ‘60s.He also represented Sweden in football as well as golf. Hewas obviously a keen sportsman but also a ‘trend setter’ andvisionary. His golf course designs providing an ultimate chal-lenge while keeping to his principles and belief in fair playand camaraderie.

He introduced the game of golf itself to the former SovietUnion, invented the first Ice hockey helmet in 1955 andset up and founded numerous youth initiatives includingthe first Ice hockey school, the Colgate Golf cup forchildren, the first golf school for children in the SovietUnion, numerous grants, illiteracy programmes - just toname but a few…

Certainly, a proud and rich history and founder for anyorganisation or club.

Looking ahead, Ullna GC embarked upon two years ofintensive work and upgrades by Nicklaus design, (withJack Nicklaus’ personal commitment and friendship withSven Tumba playing a big part in shaping this challengingnew course) which was completed and course re-openedin June 2013. Ullna now stands above most-if not all - interms of sheer quality, prestige, challenge and as an over-all experience itself. It is regularly played by top pros,Ryder Cup players and sportsmen such is the unique andexhilarating course and fantastic quality of facility. The surroundings are stunning, absolutely mind-blowinglybeautiful. Each hole could be a renaissance landscape.

We’re not in a habit of bragging but you have one of themost fun and playable courses I have ever seen.Jack Nicklaus, July 1st 2012, standing on the 18th green.

Working with my great friend and your designer Sven Tumbawas very special. Sven was a great athlete and person. Heloved Ullna very much and he wanted it to be simply the best.I hope all of you are pleased with the golf course. It has beena work of love for me. Jack Nicklaus

Ullna Golf Club

The backdrops are unbelievable – Lake Ullna, the forests and greens, the perfect fairways. It is truly a one-off in terms of sheer beautyand testament to the expert maintenance andcare provided by such a skilled grounds team.Nature is nurtured, encouraged and thecourse plays exactly like it should with con-sistent playing surfaces and immaculategreens.

The Ullna Golf Club Restaurant is worthy ofa visit even for non-golfers. It has beenawarded the “Best Restaurant in Sweden” byGolf Digest and the bar, well, “Best Bartend-er in Sweden”, Per Zetterman’s infamous,Crystal Cocktail (a pre-dinner drink), is al-most obligatory on your visit.

The Course

Ullna Golf Club is a championship coursethat hugs the shores of Lake Ullna. The lakeand its streams come into play on almostevery hole. Ullna GC is consistently rankedin Continental Europe’s top-50 golf courses(Golf World & Golf Digest) so is not just abeautiful course, a challenging and memora-ble one too.The first hole is a strategic and tempting hole.Nicklaus’ reboot has been generous in remov-ing one of the bunkers to forgive a waywardapproach. However, be too brave and it willpunish you. An excellent first hole – immedi-ately setting out its philosophy and allowingyou the golfer to play your round with anoption to extend yourself if desired.

Ullna’s signature hole, ‘The Icon’ is as mem-orable as it is tough to play. The third hole, standing aloft the Lake and separated by apicturesque stone bridge. Its green is slopedto add to the difficulty and enjoyment. Itslook and feel oozes and enhances the feelingof achievement and class. It’s a hole whichyou just want to come back to and find differ-ent routes, positions and areas to exploit.

The fourth hole is regarded by many as oneof Ullna’s greatest holes. You are confrontedwith two options teeing off. Hit your tee shotsafely to the left to avoid the Lake, or try tohit over the Lake for a straight fairway shot.Playing safely results in a more difficultsecond, whilst the risky Tee in itself rewardsyou with a straighter second shot. Either way, with so many options to suit your own styleand shot there is something for every golferhere.

The fifth and sixth holes also bend and meander through the Lake, traversing the banks and pushing you this way and that, challeng-ing you with each relentless shot. The Tumba – Hole 8, was my personal favourite. Lots of class andagain, wonderful scenery to greet you across its new layout. Thewater is a little less dramatic, but just as fearsome to play through. The toughest tee shot at Ullna – Hole 15 – The Strong. Prepare forsomething extraordinary! Naturally a long draw will help, thoughhaving said that, the great oak might make you think twice. Thiscould be a nightmare hole if you don’t keep your nerve. Nicklausmoved the tee boxes 40 metres further back from its alreadydifficult situation. The fairway is very narrow between the treesand unforgiving of a wayward shot. The green itself is beautifullylaid out with a pond and huge bunker protecting it on two fronts.

Hole by hole, Ullna provides as many surprises as it does withnatural beauty and the epitome of quality and style. It’s a privi-lege and pleasure to play and enjoy the experience and one you’llwant to repeat soon after. In summary, the golf, club restaurant, club bar and facilities arefrankly head and shoulders above any other club or course inScandinavia. Its level of personal service, attention to detail, welcome, accomplished and well managed style will leave youthrilled, delighted and looking to enjoy such a magnificent GolfClub time and time again.

Him-merland proudly hosts this tournament and what an incrediblevenue and hosting club it really is!

Making our elite list of top-tier and spectacular golfing high-lights and recommendations is the stunning Himmerland Golf& Country Club - It really is a breath taking and incredible venue.Himmerland lies approximately 20 kilometres to the West from(reputedly) Europe’s cleanest city, Aalborg (a stunning andrelatively undiscovered city location in the exposed North ofJutland, Denmark. This is an area of outstanding natural beautyand history and boasts a natural effervescence and scenic beau-ty which can only be enjoyed in this part of the world. Not only is Himmerland a stunning, superb and absolutely topquality country club, it’s Northern Europe’s largest golf resortboasting 45 superb holes and extensive practice facilities of thehighest order.

With so many challenges contained within the luxuriouscentre of excellence, there is a decision to be made withregards to which course to select! Each option offers its ownset of challenges and pushes your game in different ways;however, many will choose the PGA New Course (Now,Back-Tee New) which was originally laid out by Jan Seder-holm in 1993.

It was completely closed for renovation by Spogard and Vander Vaart Course architects to stunning acclaim and openedto play in April 2013. The work has been incredibly wellreceived and has transformed this already superb course intoa world-beater of a golf course! It looks and plays amazinglywith so many beautifully crafted hazards and a layout to pushyour shot selection and strategic thinking to the full. The redeveloped PGA New Course, now measures almost7,400 yards (and now renamed the ‘Back-tee New’) and willdebut on the European Tour circuit in 2014. Himmerland has a pedigree in hosting major eventsand the quality and standard testifies as such - ThomasBjørn, for example, won his first professional title herein 1995 at the New Course. The greens, fairways andoverall condition of the course is superb. Manicuredand maintained with precision and dedication. It ismanaged with the utmost of professionalism and itlooks like ‘money is no object’ in providing you withthe best quality in comfort, play design and upkeep toenjoy a terrific and memorable round (or two) of golf.Although the course measures almost 7,400 yards, itshouldn’t intimidate you. Different Tee placementsmean that regular hitters can also find the right chal-lenge to suit.

The resort, as mentioned, has two full 18 hole courses(The Garia and aforementioned Back-Tee) as well asa practice/ beginners course – The Bette Course.Though the Back-Tee steals the headlines with itssheer playing and fluid challenges, the Garia is wellworth a visit too!Himmerland ticks so many boxes and fulfils so muchit is difficult to simply review or critique the golfingparts alone. Golf is so much more than just the rounditself. It has to provide a complete experience and becomparable to numerous other recreational activitiesand pleasures, that these days, clubs and resorts haveto be resourceful and generous if they want to succeed.Himmerland gets our vote as it simply achieves onevery single level to most, if not all groups of golfersand travellers. Families, friends, business groups orget-together's can all arrive at Himmerland to one ofthe warmest welcomes you are ever likely, and lucky, enough to be spoilt to!As a complete country club, Himmerland is burstingwith activities and facilities. From Bowling , an incred-ible bar (The Sky Bar) as well as the simply opulentrestaurants (the POLO fine dining restaurant and theBrasserie - my favourite!) which serves superb classicand contemporary cuisine and will satisfy…Genuinely, I cannot fault any of the facilities, set-upand offered services. It is managed to such a highdegree of care and ‘putting the visitor first’. All staffwe encountered couldn’t be happier to help and pro-vide a service which will make you glad to be there. Itall feels genuine, as if they know how good an experi-ence this is and are glad they can help add to yourenjoyment.I visited with two fellow golf writers, and trying tocombine my obsession with golf with an even greaterprofessional obsession to find objective faults or fail-ure became the challenge of the week-end! We gaveup looking for fault as it just oozed comfort and provid-ed a welcoming and relaxed ambience Such is theattention to detail, there could be no suggestion, im-provement or “what if..” that you may have experi-enced in a get-away or round of golf. Everything aboutHimmerland (as mentioned) deserves the maximumcredit.

The course is made for top quality golf. It is adream to play for both long hitters with ultra-High-Tec kit and regular players with triedand trusted clubs.

Falster Golf Club

I n searching for the great clubs and courses to enjoy and challenge inScandinavia, Falster Golf Club (Danish: Falster Golfklub) stood out anddemanded its place as one of Denmark’s must play courses. It is locatedin Falster Island, Denmark, to the northwest of the village of Virket whichis just over an hour’s drive from Copenhagen. In today’s challenging economic environment, together with lots ofchoice, competition and differing challenges and activities, Golf clubsmust tick many boxes to thrive and succeed.Falster Golf Club stands out as an experience and trip well worth making.Falster maintains its traditional roots, course and (most importantly) itscommitment to the golfer and visitor. It feels as though Falster is forwardthinking and looking ahead whilst keeping true to itself as a real golfcourse and club.It is an 18 hole park and forest course set out in stunning Danish country-side with all the natural charm and beauty to relax, calm and settle youwhilst serving up a challenging course designed to push your game to itslimit. Anders Amilon, the renowned Swedish course architect, designedthe course to challenge on many levels whilst maintaining the look, feeland ambience of both the ‘forests of Skjørringe Estate’ (which it layswithin) and that of Denmark itself. It’s situated away from the hustle and bustle of busy life providing atranquil escape and peaceful environment, no roads, airports or passingtraffic to consider or disturb.Denmark is a golfing nation which takes pride in the quality of course andservice - Falster Golf Club, with the youngest (and one of the mostprogressive) golf managers in Denmark, Mads-Christian Brill Olsen, excels in both categories. The course is immaculate from beginning to end.The green keepers obviously take great pride in maintaining and improv-ing the course to a very high standard while keeping their commitment toa natural and wildlife friendly area.

Deer, pheasants and hares enjoy the scenery and occasionally passthrough the fairways adding to the experience. The course itself is linedby a stunning and ancient forest with a broad variety of trees, typicallyDanish and a pleasure to play through. The first nine holes are of a parkcourse type and placed higher, with the back nine slightly lower and onbeautiful moorland with forest and tight fairways in almost every direc-tion. Your confidence grows through the round before meeting the infa-mous 11th hole - probably one of the toughest par 4’s in Denmark - anda real challenge to play.

You need to build a respectable score in the first nine as the back nine –in particular the 11th,12th and 13th holes - definitely test you to the limits. The 11th hole is greeted by a little dogleg right, quite tight (and the treesmakes it look even worse), the need to surpass a stream in your drive. Along approach shot to a small green surrounded by trees and protectedby a water hazard is needed, with only a small entrance to the left witha parallel water hazard on the left side of the green.Achieving a bogey on this par four feels like an achievement, even eliteplayers are happy to go from there with a bogey. The 13th hole has a very tight fairway which may encourage you to playit safe. However, for most players that results in a rather long approachshot to the green. It’s tactical, tough, beautiful and a fantastic risk reward hole.

Aalborg Golf Klub

New golf clubs and courses are always an excitingproposition, better still however is to have all those newly builtbenefits wrapped up with a pack or two of tradition, history andestablished charm. ’Aalborg Golf Klub’, situated in NorthernDenmark, is one of Scandinavians hidden gems. It’s Denmark’ssecond oldest club having recently celebrated its centenary in2008 but feels modern, classy and in the top-tier of virtually anystandard of excellence.

With absolute certainty, Aalborg Golf Club features as one ofour finest golf clubs in Scandinavia. Originally an 18 holeChampionship Course designed by John D. Harris in the late

’60s, Aalborg has recently undergone a complete refurbishmentof all its greens and tees. A further 9 holes have been added andintegrated to the already superb, existing 18 holes resulting in 3seperate 9-hole courses, which are rotated weekly to give one 18hole course and one 9 hole course. In other words, the 18 holecourse changes combination every week, effectively, you havea new 18 hole challenge each week.

Each 9 hole group has its own charm, challenge and individualfeatures. These are carefully and beautifully managed holes onthis exceptional course all adding that something extra. You finish your round completely wrapped up and captivated inthe experience with an immediate twinge to return and playagain. There are very few courses with that special indescribablemagic.

Aalborg is distinctly Danish, though unique to its own geo-graphical and elemental location. The weather, ground, climateand environment all play their part (together with expert man-agement and maintenance) in creating a unique experience.Having enjoyed this marvellous course on three ocassions, each round was completely different and conjured its own per-sonality to my game as though it was alive – changing windes, temperatures all adding to its mystique. It really is one of thosecourses that you must enjoy more than once to fully appreciateand understand.

All 27 holes, in whichever order- are superb. The fairways andgreens immaculately and expertly cared for with the stunningLake and woodland features brimming with natural beauty.Although its natural and designed beauty is obvious, Aalborgis not just for decoration. It is a course that wants to push yourgame to its absolute limit if you dare.

Aalborg has signature holes described and compared to theinfamous ’Amen corner’ with some of its combinations. Ahighlight, is the most picturesque par 3 Hole which formsone of the three best holes in Scandinavian, European –even World golf – courses. It brimms with stunning rhodo-dendrons (which if you can make it) bloom in June to literal-ly take your breath away. A real treat.

The clubhouse has recently undergone extensiverenovation including a first class Proshop alongwith typical Danish Cuisine in our renowned res-taurant. Danish meatballs are (in my view, obliga-tory) on any visit to Aalborg GC while sitting inthe superb restaurant which overlooks one of thefinest finishing holes in Danish golf.

The clubhouse itself is testament to the care, atten-tion and spirit of the club. You are welcomed in-stantly, made to feel at home and comfortable.Along with superb golf, any club seeking to reachthe summit amongst its peers must provide both achallenging and enjoyable days visit where youleave mentally and physically satisfied and im-proved.

Aalborg, obviously makes the grade with infiniteroom to spare. The Stunning white exterior of themain building complimented with its dark slateroof, though of great architectural beauty, blendin to its surroundings so feel natural and in keep-ing. There is an unbelievable 26 bay driving rangeand a short game area which are worthy of a visitalone! Genuinely amongst the very best any-where in the world.

Aalborg Golf club is enjoyable irrespective ofyour golfing prowess. Keen amateurs, tournamentplayers and top professionals will all be pushed tothe very limit. The European Challenge tour, Eu-ropean Team Challenge for girls as well as theEuropean Championships for men have all beenhosted by Aalborg to great success. Its layout – inany combination – is exciting and strategic, whilstensuring your long and short game, big and regu-lar hitters, competitive and friendly rounds andplayers are all happy and challenged.

The holes are clever in delivering tension filleddecision making shots followed by spectaculardrives and approaches. Relentless if you are seek-ing to score well, but not a bully if you’re lookingto enjoy the round.

Aalborg prides itself on having the most success-ful mens team in Denmark with 11 champion-ships in just 20 years. Testament, once again toboth the unique and competitive challenge thecourse provides added to its quality of facilitiesand structure.

D enmark is blessed with lots of interesting, scenic and relaxingcourses. The facilities and architecture are typically characteris-tic and to a high standard which represents Denmark and herculture. Only a few can combine all of the best features topresent unique, top-tier and those ultimate golf experiences weall strive for.

It may be difficult to pronounce (for non-Danes), but Skjoldenae-sholm Golf Club and its two 18 hole courses, is worthy of beingplaced as one of the top golf clubs (and two of the finest courses)in Scandinavia - and presented in a confident and loud voice toofor that matter.Skjoldenaesholm, or “Skoli” as it is often referred, is locatedabout 30 miles from Copenhagen and connected with excellentinfrastructure to minimise travel time. As mentioned, it has twooutstanding golf courses, the ‘Old’ and the Robert Trent JonesJnr course of 2007.

Both courses run through the stunning Danish countryside, laden with lush, beautifully maintained and cared for grass, parkland and mature, old trees providing character, maturity andchallenge in equal measure. The layout of the course has exploit-ed these natural features to both encourage and foster wildlifeand add spice and flavour to outstanding design and a uniquegolf adventure.

Robert Trent Jr. described his Skjoldenaesholm course as theultimate in risk and reward experiences. “It’s an open, risk/ re-ward course framed by forests. My brief was to produce theflagship to Proark’s golf portfolio and worthy of wide recogni-tion”.He continues: “The natural layout employs wispy grasses andplant types to create interesting contrasts around the groundplane and meld with the natural setting.”Jones has succeeded in producing a course to such a high levelwhich blends effortlessly to its surroundings and feeling asthough it is established over decades while fulfilling todaysmodern game and allowing for the technology driven longerhitters.

Skoli is as welcoming and friendly as it is an inspiring golf cluband course. The grounds, and buildings though maintained andmanaged expertly do not deter or intimidate. The feeling of acceptance and friendly smiles which greet allwho visit immediately put you at ease. Everything in Skoli isdesigned and constructed with a vision and view to achieve theultimate golf experience for the visitor, member and guest’salike. Without exception, all staff couldn’t have been morefriendly and the club without any pretention or grace, good prac-tice and outstanding service obviously flowing through thisclub’s philosophy.

An historic rock wall, hundreds of years old wasincorporated into the design and features as ahazard to many holes. This really adds an authen-tic and characterful feature to the course not tomention a difficult obstacle!

The course is uncluttered and undeveloped, run-ning through unspoiled countryside with only acouple of picturesque old farm cottages which addto the charm and feel. With Jones Jr. the coursehas a strong US influence, but really manages toincorporate those distinct Danish natural featuresand even feels culturally Danish at the same time.Being Danish, of course the water hazards areplentiful and picturesque. They do present ex-treme challenges for those able (and after longshots) as well as those more comfortable withregular shots. Being too brazen of course carriesits own risk and your card will tell the tale, toocautious, and again, you will add to your score.Strategic thinkers combined with a mixture ofshots should produce a respectable card, but Skoliis designed for golfers who want to play and enjoya round of golf to remember.

Holes 13, 14 and 15 run adjacent to an area ofnatural beauty and consequently Jones Jr. wasunable to construct any permanent or “unnatural”feature – which included bunkers. An ingenioussolution was applied which has made Skoli asuperbly clever and unique course. Grass defencesbuilt on valleys and hollows were used and creat-ed - genuinely adding something different - whilemaintaining the difficulty and managing to pro-duce an even greater hazard than if a bunker ortwo were present. These holes are stunning intheir look, feel and also in the questions they applyto your round.Skoli is a perfect blend of golf challenge with arelaxing, comfortable and memorable experience. The facilities are superb and faultless in theirservice and level of quality. The management isexceptional and obviously in keeping with a feel-ing of excellence throughout.

It’s a visit worth making and enjoying, both cours-es deserve to be played, not simply the excellent

‘Jones’ and the experience warrants a long week-end of indulgence and exceptional golf and serv-ice quality. It’s one of Jones Jr.’s finest courseswhich has developed and grown into one of Eu-rope’s finest. It’s still relatively unknown in broadterms, however will undoubtedly grow in statureand popularity as its secret escapes. For qualityand sheer golf brilliance, it’s as good as it gets.Skoli (or Skjoldenaesholm) Golf Club, not just atough name, but an awesome game.

Møn Golf Center

In Norse mythology from the story of Gylfaginning, an island wascreated by the goddess Gefjun after she tricked Gylfi, the king ofSweden. Gefjun removed a piece of land and transported it toDenmark, and it became Zealand. One of Zealand’s most beautifuland auspicious Islands is named Møn.

Whether you follow Norse myth and legend or not, this goddesscreated Isle of beauty absolutely captures the imagination andfeels like an escape to a wonderland immersed in natural beautyand bathed in the delights of magnificent woodland, parkland anda shore line - which is breathtaking.

The basal rock platform forms a gentle undulating landscape fullof character and depth. Møn Golf Center (or Moen as written inEnglish) can be found on the shores of Stege Nor, a lake whichconnects the sea beside the town of Stege. It’s approx. 1 hour 20minutes’ drive from Copenhagen and sits due south of the capital. The infrastructure is excellent and the journey a pleasant and stressfree one.

Møn Golf Center immediately grabs your attention with its uniquepositioning and distinctly Danish persona. It genuinely is one ofDenmark’s (and Europe’s) most picturesque and unspoiled areas. As we have trawled through many superb courses and clubs to seekthose truly great golfing experiences, we not only considered thegolf, it had to tick all those boxes relevant to today’s demandinggolf consumer.

Our aim was to satisfy those golfers who sought the very best in allareas to achieve virtual perfection with a golfing experience to takeaway and remember fondly - The triumph of the spirit.

Møn Golf Center has 18 superbly designed and constructed holesof the most challenging golf laid on exquisite naturally beautifulwoodland and parkland scenery with a back drop of a sea scape tocapture your imagination. It’s a classic “hidden gem” in the truesense of the words. It is not the best known of courses or clubs inScandinavia, or even Denmark, but has all the ingredients to be atop class venue and most rewarding golf experience.Møn caters for both keen amateur players as well as competitionpros. The course is a classic risk and reward layout where yourcaution or bravery makes all the difference to breaking par or highscoring rounds. The course challenges you from the first hole andrelentlessly pulls and pushes you through your card. You can of course play and enjoy a relaxing round of golf, thenatural features and abundant nature (which is encouraged andthrives around the course) testifies to the feeling of tranquility andpeace – but this is a real golfer’s dream to play!Long hitters with a bag full of technology will be pleased to playhere as will regular hitters who play strategically. It’s a course fullof color and vibrancy, water hazards threaten to swallow yourwayward shots – especially on the 10th, 11th and 17th holes. The 17th

hole’s pond in particular is rumored to contain the highest densityof abandoned balls in Denmark…

Møn Golf Center

THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA 57

The 10th hole is a Par 4 and although it measure amere 330 meters (approx. 370 yards) it is a true scoredestroyer. With out of bounds, tight all the way up theleft side and water on the right, a straight drive isimperative, your second must carry the water for thelast 70 meters to the green to have any chance of anunder par hole. A bail out area for the not so adventur-ous golfer is available to the left of the water but ofcourse will cost an extra shot – and is by no means ahole saver.

But a great golf hole it certainly is.

One of the major thrills here and greatest challengesare the par 3’s on the 8th, 11th and 17th holes. OftenPar 3 holes in general are less favored by purists, these, however are memorable and take your shortgame and your classic skills into overdrive. They feellike classic Seve Ballesteros holes and ones he wouldhave thrived upon and absolutely adored. They varyfrom between 135 yards and 165 yards so favor anaccurate drive with precision (and placement) ratherthan the modern trend to push the boundaries. The shore of Stege Nor accompanies holes 15 and 17but is more a tasty back drop than an immediate threat.

The round is broken up with the option of a ‘half wayhouse’. You can enjoy a mid-round drink and refreshyourself before taking on the formidable back nine.

Throughout the course, the fairways and greens arepristine, expertly kept and manicured. The rough isformidable, but in keeping with the course and chal-lenge it possesses. The woodland is natural and ma-ture and protects the course like the Norse Gods whoallegedly founded the Isle.

It’s a modern, top tier golf club with a superblyplayable and enjoyable golf course. It genuinely push-es even the most competitive player’s game to thelimit. Though it maintains a comfortable and tradi-tional feel it is anything but dated or old. The DanishEuropean Tour player, Andreas Hartø regularly playsthe course or just practices at the club's wide range offacilities.

Andreas Hartø´s golf career began at Møn Golf Clubas a junior member so his skills well-honed to get thebest out of the conditions and style.

There are so many individual features on the coursethat it’s difficult to single out a particular hole asMøn’s ‘signature’ hole. The challenges are so diversein its layout that dependent upon your style andperformance on that given day, they could all becomegreat memorable holes.

The fairways play true and consistently, you are practically guaranteed a great layand bad bounces apparently rarely occur, so a fair and honest round of golf to mea-sure your card is served virtually all year round. Sadly, due to the impeccable condi-tion, any high scores and 19th hole discussions will be hard pushed to blame thecourse.

The greens are excellent, well prepared, fairly undulating without turning into amountain landscape and all with a beautifully smooth surface. If you can read theline, and bravely hit your putt, the ball will find the hole. The greens genuinely playtrue and even, firm and receptive – which as a golfer, is all you can really ask forfrom a course.

The course is only 20 years old, but respectfully accompanies an area where a burialmound "Lillehøj" from around 1500BC casts a glance across the 8th and 16th greens.

For history buffs and connoisseurs, the very old frescoes in Keldby church, locatedalmost next to the 4th green and 5th tee, are recommended. The oldest of these fres-coes dating back to the year 1275AD.

Moen Golf center is unpretentious which is exemplified in the comfortable Café inthe club house where you can relax and unwind after your round. From here you canreally take in the atmosphere of your surroundings and the landscape. I would per-sonally recommend the renowned house burger reputably one of Denmark’s finest,or the Danish smørrebrød (open sandwiches) which is authentic and delicious.

Silkeborg Ry golfklub

S ilkeborg Ry Golf Club is situated in Resenbrojust East of Silkeborg and in the part of Denmarkknown as the “lake district of Jutland”. It is an awe-some woodland course, reminiscent of Woburn inthe UK, founded in 1966 and easily finds itself assome of the finest golf courses in Scandinavia – letalone Denmark.Silkeborg features 54 holes including a pay andplay facility and is renowned for its famous par 3holes. It is Denmark’s largest golf resort and itsreputation for quality and excellence is not dimin-ished by its number of holes, facilities and area. The three courses, The ‘West’, ‘South’ and ‘East’courses provide three different and memorablerounds and experiences and when combined, seri-ously produce something special and unique in Eu-rope. All three courses have their own uniqueattributes and features and differ in challenges, strategies and the different games golfers bring toeach round.

In 2007, Thomas Bjørn, Silkeborg’s most cher-ished son, 14 times European Tour winner and aRyder Cup Great, oversaw a major development atthe club. The Silkeborg Course was developed tothe East – adding a further 9 holes to the existing18 and more importantly adding a different dimen-sion to an already superb course layout. Bjørn’sexperience both of a top, top, professional and per-haps more so of this spectacular area have contrib-uted to produce a very special course. For those ofyou familiar with the Great Dane and his panacheon the course, you can feel his influence and under-standing during the round. The old front nine is known as the ‘West’ course.Seven of the back nine (and two new holes), theterrific 3rd and 4th holes form the new ‘South’course, whilst the old 10th and 11th holes have beenjoined by the seven new holes on the brand new

‘East’ course.

It may appear on first viewing a littlecomplicated to read. To play, it worksseamlessly – as though it has always beenthis way and it flows exactly as you mightwant it to. The holes fit each other andchallenge and reward you hole by hole –irrespective which course you play. Theplanning and design is on a different leveland it is championship class in its structure.Great fun to play, always challenging yourgame and making you take risks whilsttesting your long and short games. The ‘West’ course features a 411 yard par4 cracker! The 7th Hole includes threecross bunkers in the fairway, just in thelanding area from your elevated tee shot. The fairway kinks to the right presentingyou with the green and its bunker and treeguard and protectorate… A great hole inthe midst of an equally tough 5th, 6th and8th hole combination. The ‘South’ courses 8th hole is anotherhighlight in a course laden with adventureand its new modern holes designed toaccommodate the longer hitters and shortgame specialists alike. This 540 yard, par5 monster is worth the green fee alone andwill stay with you long after – definitelyone to discuss afterwards! You drive down a corridor of trees to afairway that doglegs right, leading to agreen guarded by three bunkers, unforgiv-ing and tempting at the same time.

The ‘East’ courses 5th hole, also a recentaddition, features one of the famous par3’s that Silkeborg is famous for. It’s a 195yard favourite that the members remark asthe hole they possibly enjoy the most andenjoy playing most often. It’s easy to seewhy. This picturesque hole has water tothe right and a bunker to the far left. Itpunishes any deviation in your drive butthe feeling of achievement when you hit itstraight and approach the green is priceless. All said, the stunning natural features arecomplimented by the expert maintenanceand careful management of the grounds. With so many holes and three courses tokeep pristine, it’s remarkable that Silke-borg manage such an exquisite and profes-sional venue.

In Norway, all golf clubs but one are organized within the Norwegian Golf Federation (NGF). The NGF is the third largest federationwithin Norwegian sports. With a total of 114,000 memberships spread over 183 golf clubs, the federation facilitates golf offersregardless of age, skills and preconditions.

The NGF has the responsibility and authority to develop the Norwegian elite golf through the national teams and age-specific teamsbetween the ages of 13 and 18. The federation translates the Rules of Golf, funds research for better turf and a better environment andmaintains the handicap system. NGF reports to the Golf Assembly consisting of representatives from the golf clubs.

If you want to come to Norway to play golf, keep in mind that most Norwegian golf courses are products of the environment and theNordic climate. On the south-west coast, you can normally play all year round, but for most courses, the season starts in early may andends some time in October/November depending on when the frost sets in.

Although Norway in many ways is a small country the distance from south to north is considerable. With a three hour flight from southtill north, golfers who visit the country are well advised to plan ahead which courses they would like to visit.

NGF will not recommend any courses above others, but there are a number of courses that stand out, both in relation to the beauty ofit´s surroundings and the quality of the golf course.

Miklagard Golf Club

I n 2002 an ultra-ambitious aim to create one of theworld’s great golf clubs was started in Miklagard, Nor-way.Just north of the capital city, Oslo, Miklagard literallytranslates as “The Great City” – fitting then that such aproject would seek to emulate the city name it resides in.Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Miklagard Golf Clubis as spectacular as it is challenging. A tournament layoutwith so many highlights and plaudits that we can barelyfind sufficient pages to do this great club justice. It iseasy to get to by air being close to the new GardermoenInternational Airport which connects to most major citiesin Europe and beyond.

In our seeking Norway’s finest golf experiences, essen-tially, we wanted to find golf that would be comparable(or superior) to any other golf facility, venue or courseanywhere in the world. Miklagard’s intention was to begreat, to host major tournaments to be a flagship playerin the European Tour calendar. It has achieved this roleand then some with both the quality of its facilities(which are incredible) and the challenge of such a uniqueand playable course.

Miklagard absolutely justifies its position as (in ouropinion) Norway’s stand out and must play golf course. It beams with confidence from every aspect and by anyperspective. The entrance is inspiring and oozes a qualityand feel that instantly introduces itself as somethingspecial. The quality of its grounds are immaculate andtended with the utmost care. This is especially difficultgiven the Norwegian climate and its own unique chal-lenges.Its ranking and justification as a great Golf venue can befelt as you enter the unique Club House. It is distinctlyand deliberately Norwegian. Proud of its culture, designand boasting of its architecture from the classic woodenbeams through to the tower. The natural grass laden roofis something we have never encountered before butprovides a talking point and stands out to present Mikla-gard as something different and a Golf club which isprepared to push the boundaries – both literally andhypothetically. It is comfortably considered one of Scandinavia’s top 10golf courses, and we can only endorse this view with anupgrade that it could hold itself in terms of sheer golfinggenius against any course in Europe.

The Peugeot Golf guide rate Miklagard asthe number 1 course in Norway, GolfDigest as its number 2, Swedish Golf mag-azine confirm it easily makes their top 5courses in Nordic countries and the listcould go on and on. It really is impressivein every single aspect and will take yourbreath away.Professional golfers adore the challengethat only Miklagard offers. It’s a brutal6,765 meters in length (7516 yards) sowill satisfy long hitters, strategic playersand those with modern, technology filledgolf bags looking to extend and push theirgame to its limits.Regular and keen amateur golfers too willfind this course (probably) the best golfexperience they have ever encountered. There is something there for all types ofplayer, but make no mistake, this is agolfers course and one which doesn’t takeprisoners. It will ultimately reward yourgame when you take risks and punish yourcaution and fear. Tee placement is criticaland our advice is to start without any ego, then return to see how good you really are!In terms of golfing joy, it doesn’t get anybetter than this! You will have to returnand play again, and given the unique lay-out and those things you just cannot findanywhere else, for those golfers lookingfor the ultimate thrill, it is worthy of yourtime investment and a visit even if youplay no other Norwegian course.Although it is recognised and ranked ashighly as it is, Miklagard is almost to beconsidered a hidden gem given its sheerscope and game. It is truly comparable toany course – anywhere.

The greens are immaculate, fairways ex-pertly maintained. The grounds in theirentirety are managed with precision anddeveloped in keeping with its ‘great’ andworld class venue status. Deep bunkersand the lay of the land protect the greenspresenting almost every hole with the chal-lenge of pushing all aspects of your game. Both Seve’s short game and Tiger’s powergame is needed - no pressure then?

The changes in elevation combined with the length, really make this something else. As mentioned, the fairways and greensare honest and true so when you do get your shots right, the course responds consistently and fairly. It is everything you wouldexpect from a great course and from an extraordinary experience. The facilities, the club house and most pertinently the service here are second to none and managed from the top down witheffortless ease and sublime attention. It is no overstatement to say that every member of staff will greet you with a welcomingand friendly smile which feels genuine, and it probably is. The Norwegian culture comes through to all who visit and the “gladto see you, please come in” warmth belies its often chilly climate.Given that the course was opened in 2002, it looks remarkably mature and natural. The scenery is spectacular and inspiring. It is typically Norwegian and though adds an element of class does not look or feel pretentious. You will feel relaxed and atease and taking in the surroundings only adds to this great feeling. As the course develops and grows in stature (as itundeniably will) Miklagard will only become a greater and greater experience which is a frightening prospect. As Jones Jr.’s first Norwegian golf project, Miklagard has set the bar of achievement impossibly high. Trent Jones himselfstated: "This breathtaking 6,707-meter golf course is set in a beautiful farming landscape, its grasses burnished with northernsummer sun and glistening in the champagne snow of winter. This is a big, brash course as impressive as its NorwegianViking history. It takes fierce, strong men to match its hilly terrain, and beautiful Nordic ladies to equal the charm of itslake-lined and flower-laden attractions. We are proud to welcome Miklagard into our worldwide family of golf courses."And in the words of Craig Dyce, the General Manager of PGA European Tour Courses, "We firmly believe that in Miklagardwe have become involved in the premier golf facility in Norway. This goes right from your wonderful golf course to thefirst-class practice facilities and the welcoming clubhouse."In case this isn't praise enough, touring professional Trevor Immelman has commented that Miklagard possesses the bestgreens he's ever played on. Management values the conditions of these greens so deeply that they will fine any player foundwithout a divot tool, and eject any player who carries one but doesn't use it. It may appear harsh, but when you see the coursefor your self – you will absolutely agree that this is a marvel to play and an experience to savour and look forward to treatingyourself to again and again. The marvellous Miklagard Golf Club.

Stavanger Golf Club

Norway is fast becoming a must play golf countrywith unexplored and breath-taking courses, uniqueand exclusive to its native environment and culture.Stavanger golf club – Norway’s fifth oldest golf club

– founded 5th April 1956, stands out as easily one ofthe best and a must play course on your Norwegianadventure!Stavanger really is a golfer’s course. Designed withchallenge in mind and made to push your shot-mak-ing and shot-itinerary. It’s a beautifully situated be-side Lake Store Stokkavatn and just a few minutesaway from the town centre, though you would neverknow it!It has a rich history of hosting major championshipsincluding the Norwegian (18 times), the Nordic (2),Norwegian Open Championships (1) as well as theEuropean Ladies Championships (1) so obviouslypushes both keen amateurs and serious players inequal measure. Its course layout is made to surprise and challengeyou equally, without being pretentious.

You can still enjoy the scenery (and your company)and meander your way through the course if you sodesire, but for those of you who like the challenge of anew course, or one which favours the brave, Sta-vanger is a real treat. The course has undergone an extensive renovation andmodernisation programme at a cost of some 40millionNOK, and this hard and costly work shows all overthe course. The greens and fairways are terrifically maintainedyear round. The climate presents its own unique blendof challenges, but in our experience you simply wouldnot know it.It is a modern, year round course, superb narrow fair-ways and good, dry, undulating greens which add tothe challenge. It has a par 71 and weighs in at just under 6000m socan be an enjoyable experience for both amateurs, short and long hitters. The rough, though fearsome, iswell maintained. Even a wayward shot shouldn’t re-sult in a lost ball (or two!).

Stavanger Golf Club

The course is primarily about precision hit-ting, of course the length of your drive is aconsideration, but not an ultimatum likemany courses.

Your short game too – and perhaps moreso is tested here. Intricate and challenginggreens where placement and finesses isbalanced against the modern need for ‘milelong drives’.It’s the sort of course Seve Ballesteroswould enjoy and want to play I’m sure.

As with all of our recommended andmust play courses and clubs, the course isonly 50% of the attraction. The generalfeeling and welcome, your comfort andability to relax – either beforehand, duringor after the round is imperative.

If, like me, golf isn’t always about hit-ting the course within seconds of arriving, blasting the ball from nondescript tees onforgetful (if pretty) parks, Golf clubs likeStavanger are perfect.

The general feeling of a relaxed andwelcome introduction making you feel atease straight away is presented to you whenyou turn into these stunning grounds.

Although it is close by the town ofStavanger, it feels like a million miles away.No distractions, traffic or other, to interfereor bother you and you feel transported to apeaceful recluse where golf is king.

Holes 3 and 17 – two cracking par 3’sare worth the visit in themselves. You mustsavour these two holes. They are compara-ble to any other world class course andthough distinctly Norwegian could adornany major championship with their cleverand feisty demands.

The bunkers are placed around thegreens making both selection and the mak-ing of shots a real process. You genuinelyneed to know both your game and yourlimits to prevail.

The restaurant and bar (both newly built) areexceptional. Quality of food, drink, and per-haps most telling, the service – are second tonone. It really is a pleasure to enjoy a mealhere with a fine bottle of wine after a memora-ble round of the finest golf. All of the staff herewill make you feel at home and assist you ifrequired without hesitation. These days, golfclubs need to be more than just a round of golf –numerous attributes and qualities are comparedand considered when deciding who and whereto play. All boxes will be ticked at Stavanger –seriously.Stavanger has been compared in similar termsto Augusta with its flower arrangements, stonebridges, scenery and attention to detail. All fair-ly accurate due to the care, investment andsheer quality of grounds and decoration/ fea-tures.For me, however, it is unique in its charm andhas its own aura. An absolute charm, full ofstunning scenery and presence, kept magnifi-cently and a welcome visit for either a businessget together, friendly four ball or just a mustplay round of golf at a course worth travellingto Norway for.Distinctly Stavanger.

Golf Club

2 world class courses in one unique surrounding. Seriously,a memorable and astonishing experience in every singleaspect. We have to find the best, the absolute ‘finest’ withour recommendations and selections for the best golf experi-ences that Scandinavia has to offer. With Kytäjä Golf Club,we couldn’t be more confident that this is as spectacular asit is enjoyable.

Kytäjä Golf Club is close to the city of Hyvinkää and about50 kilometres from the capital Helsinki, with excellentinfrastructure this equates to a comfy 30 minute drive. It issituated in the most picturesque and beautiful Finnish coun-tryside and is breath taking in its charm and natural beauty.

The look and feel immediately gives the impression ofquality and supreme excellence in its care, attention andsheer world class status. Since its opening in 2003, KytäjäGolf has become synonymous with the best that premiergolf facilities have to offer. It is located in the historic

‘millieu of Kytäjä Hyvinkää’, the two first-rate courses, theexpansive practise areas as well as the stylish and modernclubhouse; Kytäjä Golf exists in a class with few equalsaround the world.

Canadian golf course architect Thomas McBroomdesigned both the South East course and the NorthWest courses. Stylistically both courses represent mod-ern North American golf course architecture at its best.Wide fairways, all-encompassing shaping of surfaceareas and the strong contrasts in the overall colourscheme make each round a vivid experience.

The play areas are optimised to withstand the intensenorthern weather conditions during the whole golfseason due to a combination of expert managementand innovative building techniques. Though designedin an American style in its width and length, it retainsa European sense and feel with its challenge - andabsolutely remains distinctly Finnish in its characterand ambience.

The courses at Kytäjä have received numerous awardsboth within Finland and internationally and it isranked as the number one course in Finland by mostprofessional golf writers, and we emphatically agreewith all plaudits and recognition this superb facilityhas and will receive!

South East Course

South East, the older of the two courses atKytäjä, was completed in 2003. Although inrelative terms it is still a youngster at a mere10 or so years old, it already feels as thoughit has lived and breathed for many moreyears, The course is mature and shrubs, greens and fairways are all established bely-ing its age.

As the first world-class course in Finland, itgarnered immediate interest and attentionand despite being the ultimate golf experi-ence in Finland and one of the top in Europe,it genuinely will only get better!

South East has a dual personality. The firstnine holes are situated in a spacious forestlandscape with great variations in elevation. Many of the holes are played downhill withspectacular scenery from the tees giving ahint of the challenges to come. The first teeallows a view of the entire course and shouldyou enjoy as we did, an early morning round, the mist coming from Lake Kytäjä shroudingthe land is one of Nature’s real treats. Amaz-ing. The sun beams through the tall Finnishpines to create a mythical feel and one thatwill live with you long after the round hasbeen completed.

The back nine is more level and open reminis-cent of traditional links-style courses. Thepar 5 holes 14 and 18 border the crystal clearLake Kytäjä lending a distinct visual atmos-phere while challenging your game and yourstrategies away from safety and comfort totaking risks and pushing the boundaries (liter-ally) of your game to its fullest. The SouthEast stands out with wide fairways, deep bun-kers and expansive greens.

The greens are cleverly and deceptivelyplaced - often with elevated and false frontsto challenge your short and putting gamestoo. Throughout the course, the fairways andgreen in particular are regular, consistent andfair. They play true which allows you to playyour game without the worry of a badbounce or area as all world class courses, ofcourse, should. This course alone would beworthy of a visit and a few rounds, before wehave even set foot on the second, spectacularcourse.

North West Course

Kytäjä's second course, completed in August2004, is also named after its geographic loca-tion. The North West course meandersthrough changing topography offering bothvisual delights as well as engaging playingconditions. Were in not for its location also inKytäjä, the North West course would un-doubtedly compete on equal footing withSouth East for title of best course in Finland.

The first five holes of North West are locatedin an expansive and open landscape reminis-cent of those fabled places where golf wasfirst played so long ago. The rest of the courseis situated in diverse and rugged terrain bring-ing changes in elevation. Rocky outcroppingsborder some of the holes and give the courseits distinct personality. The view from backtee of 17th overlooking Lake Kytäjä, bothcourses, and the clubhouse complex willleave you in awe. It is worth taking a momentto reflect and take it all in. It’s special, tran-quil, naturally delightful and inspiring.

The shaping of North West is horizontally andvertically softer than its sibling South East. Inaddition, rounded tees, wide fairways andopen green fronts make this course slightlyfriendlier to play, though both courses areequally challenging and playable to the mostcompetitive and even professional golfer.

In designing the course, McBroom wanted tobuild both a unique and unforgettable golfexperience. Money was no object in creatingand establishing itself as a distinctly Finnishclub whilst taking in the best from all over theworld. This was a course that he wanted todesign for players (not only from Finland) butfor any golfer to enjoy and take in.

"Our vision in Kytäjä project is to build twocourses that are distinctive and unforgettable. On Lakeside - course (South East -course)there are several holes that are somehow chal-lenged by the lake Kytäjä alongside them.Especially holes 13 -18th are outstanding.Forest -course (North West -course) is playedin more arboreous scenery. The Tee shot fromthe back tee of 17th is extra special; takingplace from the middle of the woods to thefairway 30 meters below.

The facilities and relaxing areas are all of the highest quality –saunas for both sexes are provided and the traditional aspects ofa clubhouse with fireplace and lounge also prepared to the bestpossible degree of comfort.Golf resorts and clubs have to be all encompassing these daysand our selections must include all areas of provision andentertainment so that you can visit a course, entertain, relax, play and even possibly visit for business comfortably aware thatyour guests and friends will be impressed and can enjoy theexperience. Kytäjä will not disappoint in any feature or aspecthere too.

The restaurant provides fine dining and a superb selection ofhigh quality cuisine throughout the season. There are also "half-way houses" on both courses where you can enjoy a drink, refreshments and snacks again enjoying top quality features.

Finally, the practicing area’s at Kytäjä Golf are world class. There’s plenty of space for all players in the 12 hectare drivingrange and short game area. The driving range has four differenthitting areas and all slots can be hit from grass (no turf mats).Even the golf balls are all top quality, with only Callaway ballson offer. The target greens with bunkers allowing practice froma variety of distances also speak of the high degree of thought, function and expertly managed facilities that Kytäjä boasts.

Golf (and life for that matter) is all about those experiences thatlinger and those that can be recanted and explored and spokenover with friends. This course and experience is truly one ofthose magical and exceptional memories that is worth its weightin gold. With so much attention, detail, care and love investedin Kytäjä, you have to experience the feel, challenge andwarmth this superb Finnish Club has to offer.

Generally speaking both courses are bold, rousing, North Ameri-can design influenced with wide fairways. We have attachedqualities from natural forest, rocks, creeks and field lands to thelayouts. The Important part of the project was a history of Kytäjäarea and preservation of the native agricultural heritage it has.

One of the main factors of a great golf course is its playability andmaking sure that golfers in every level can have a great golfexperience. We've designed holes that are challenging yet notpunishing and enjoyable without being easy.Top quality green keeping and conditioning of the course aredefinitive requirements. To achieve this we've selected specifiedmaterials and methods in building. We believe that this leads to thebest possible quality. All in all, Kytäjä has every element to be aworld glass golf destination."

On each and every level and ambition, McBroom and the manage-ment at Kytäjä have succeeded in creating a unique and spectacu-lar course, club and golf and recreational experience.

In designing the clubhouse, Pääsky & Siistonen Oy, with headdesigner Pertti Pääsky wanted to produce and install a landmarkand memorable feature which could offer all of the world classfeatures to compliment the world class course. In keeping withmodern Finnish expectations and character, it is ultra-modernwhilst staying true to sustainable, natural raw materials. It is madeof stone, wood and renewable resources. It covers approx. 1500m2and boasts a 380 m2 terrace which would be worthy of a visit byitself! Attention to detail is evident throughout the entire club. It ispractical and functional – but at the same time is opulent andluxurious without being snobbish. It feels very comfortable andthis is amplified by the superb staff and welcome which greetseverybody that visits.

THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA 96

Holes 1 and 5 hole are characterised by manyas signature holes due to their own testing andchallenging features. The first hole is an ex-tremely difficult par 5 where the green sits onsheer rock beside the coast. It really sets thescene and makes you hit the ground running.Intriguing and demanding at the same timeand a wonderful experience for both short andlong hitters.

The fifth hole is a long par 3 over the Gold-Chest Creek. A gem to play and easily one ofthe best par 3‘s in Scandinavia – let aloneIceland.

Golf needs to be a balance of risk and rewardand also of the pleasure of the experience ormotivation to push your game to its limits. Itsthese paradoxes which have made golf thegame it is today, enabling businessmen toenjoy a round together, professional playersto seek perfection in precision and power andthe enthusiast to simply enjoy the challengefor the feel, look, and the sport itself.

The first 9 holes in this ambitious golf coursedevelopment (with larger greens than almostall other Icelandic courses) are all worth avisit and worthy of the challenge. They reallywet the appetite for the back nine to followand all conforming to USGA requirementsand guides. They cleverly combine the best ofAmerican golf, with the challenge of the bestestablished and traditional golf courses ofScotland – but all with a unique and “Iceland-only tag“ which makes it unmissable.

Hella Golf Club

A long while and countless arguments were required inestablishing the Finest golf experiences, clubs and cours-es in Iceland – let alone in Scandinavia.

The natural environment, unique attributes, quality offacility – even the level of service has all been taken intoaccount. Many clubs and courses ticked most boxes, fewachieved the coveted 5 star grade in all areas. One Golf club however, didn’t really need to worry aboutits inclusion or making the grade. Absolutely no recom-mended list of top-tier golf clubs of Scandinavia couldexclude Hella Golf Club in Iceland. It is a stunning GolfCourse which would probably make the top group in anymarket or location.

Hella Golf Club is just over an hours drive from Reykja-vik and is midway between Hella and Hvolsvöllur. Hellais a links course even though it’s approx 20 km from thesea (due to the sand and lava) within its natural surround-ings. It is widely considered one of the (if not the) finestlinks courses in Iceland, offering a mesmerising view ofstunning mountains, the Eyjafjallajökull glacier and Mt.Hekla.

The course offers a “once in a life-time” opportunity toexperience golf in an absolutely unique setting. Genuinely.

It will literally take your breath away as you tee off andplay through this stunning course. Its natural characteris-tics draw you in to an unforgettable experience. It feelslike a privilege to play at Hella GC. Not because of anypretention or statutory requirement, but due to the quality, management and pure feel of the course and club.

Hella couldn’t be more welcoming and friendly. It’sbeautifully and efficiently run - and its facilities are im-peccable – but you naturally and immediately feel athome and most comfortable. After acclimatising to the wonderful scenery the roundbegins with a tricky first hole. This continues hole byhole without relaxing or allowing you to gain favour ormomentum without concentration throughout.Hella is absolutely a golfers-golf-course. Its challenge isunique and features unforgettable as stated earlier. But itreally is the overall playing and golf experience whichallows Hella to leap to the forefront of Icelandic golfcourses.

Hella Golf Club

No other golf course can offer a clear viewof five volcanoes and ‘Westman Island’ isalso visible from the golf course.

This is a deceptively tough course withsmall greens to challenge even the keenplayer. Its stand out features are its ‘moguls’which give this flat course character andIcelandic feel. It can be very windy andplayers need to be able to drive accuratelyand control their approach shots to make themost out of this course. Long hitters willenjoy the environment, pushing their gameto its maximum level. Regular hitters willpush their own game all the way through arelentless, although thoroughly enjoyableround of the finest golf.

Buggies of course are available, but for me,to best enjoy such a one-off challenge youhave to walk the course and savour eachhole and approach personally. At least thefirst time you play here!

The course was founded in 1952 but didn’tbecome a fully fledged 18 hole course until1986. The first 9 hole golf course was builton Gaddastadaflatir by the river Ytri-Ranganear the town Hella but it was not until 1970that the club got permission to extend fromits existing location.

…it will literally take yourbreath away the first time youtee off..

The Golfklubber Iceland, or GKG Golf Club as it is known, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. It is a young club with a 27 holegolf course located in the Reykjavik mid area. The golf club has around 2000 members and boasts 338 members under 15 years old.On top of that, every summer, the golf club runs an intensive Golf-Play programme for children between 5 and 12 years, with the aimof introducing the game of golf to youngsters. Around 500 kids participate in the Golf-Play on an annual basis, leading to a total of840 kids 15 years and younger, participating in GKG’s programs every year!

When GKG was established 20 years ago, the board positioned the golf club as a family club with a strong focus on golf as asport. The youth programme was established in the beginning to live up to this policy. Today, GKG golf Club has three PGAProfessionals and one PGA trainee on full payroll. During the summer time, in addition, around 20 golf instructors, mainly elitejunior players, work part time under supervision of PGA Professionals to carry out the ambitious youth programme.

According to Ulfar Jonsson GKG’s head pro, the programme is paying off. Iceland´s only European Tour player and GKGmember, Birgir Leifur Hafthorsson continues to dominate other Icelandic players, securing his fifth national title. Our ladies teamwon the Icelandic club team championship, and in 2012 one of our young talents, Ragnar Mar Gardarsson became the proud winnerof the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy, held at Royal Troon.

But how does the club justify the cost related to the programme? Agnar Mar Jonsson, the managing director of GKG, states thatthe programme is not self-sustained on an annual basis, but, as a long time investment it surely pays off. “Around 5% of the kidsmove on to become elite players and around 85% of the kids stop playing golf when they start their school and job career andestablish families of their own.” According to Agnar 70% of them will start playing golf again when they have settled and 70% ofthem will join their home club. “The beauty about this strategy is that the golf club is now self-sustaining in terms of newmemberships and most of the new members in the future will have relatively low handicaps. In that way, we are creating the golfersof the future at the same time we secure our future business”.

A terrific mantra and philosophy from a stunning golf club and exceptionally well maintained and managed club and course. Thescenery is obviously stunning and the ambience will leave you relaxed and feeling welcome.

Frequent flyers know the ropes. They get through Passport Control and Customs and head to the Duty Free stores. They need to think - are they entitled to it or not? Then, laden with bags, they struggle to the plane, shoving theirprecious cargo into already-stuffed overhead lockers. At the end of their flight, they lug the same bags down miles ofwalkways, stairs and escalators, before picking up their luggage and struggling to the taxis, coaches or trains, hopingthey don't drop or break the bottles on the way.

The history of the Michelsen company began on July 1st 1909 when a young and prospective master watchmaker fromDenmark, J. Frank Michelsen, founded his workshop and store in Iceland. Since then, the Michelsen Watchmakers’ familyhistory has been closely interwoven with the story of Icelandic trade and as one of the leading watchmaking companies inIceland. The Michelsen's are known for their professionalism and excellent craftsmanship, which has given them a solidreputation as their more than 100 years of history confirms where the knowledge and the know-how has been passed on fromone generation to another. On December 1st 2009, to commemorate a century of Michelsen Watchmakers in Iceland, they revived their own brand underthe name Michelsen Watchmakers, that had been dormant for seventy years. J. Frank used to produce pocket watches thatcarried his name but due to World War II the production came to a halt. This anniversary series, Reykjavík 1909, was featured in a numbered and limited edition of 100 pieces. The anniversary watchseries was outstandingly successful so the production was kept alive. The watchmakers of the family company; Frank andRobert, father and son, did not waver from their goal of producing high quality watches they could be proud of but still be keptat reasonable prices. With extensive planning combined with their mutual experience, knowledge and eye for quality and detail, the birth of four more collections became a reality. The Michelsen shop on Laugavegur, the main shopping street in downtown Reykjavík, offers a wide range of quality watchesand jewellery, including many internationally known brands. Their flagship is Rolex but since 1981 Michelsen Watchmakershave been the only Rolex Authorized Dealer in Iceland. Other interesting brands worth to mention is Tudor and Romain Jerome, two of the most growing watch brands in the industry today. Tudor offers elegant and classic sport watches, all mechanical andSwiss Made, while Romain Jerome’s limited editions take the extreme look to its maximum where they offer very uniquewatches, for instance the well-known Titanic-DNA watches which is partly made of genuine rusted steel recovered from theTitanic, and the Moon-DNA which is made with parts from Apollo 11 and contains Moon Dust.Among interesting design watches the Michelsens offer Movado from Switzerland and the famous Danish brands GeorgJensen, Skagen, Rosendahl and Arne Jacobsen. There is also an excellent selection of Icelandic designed and handcraftedjewellery in silver and gold in the spacious Michelsen shop.

Michelsen watchmakers welcome you for a visit to their shop. The prices will surprise you and don’t forget that all foreigntourists enjoy the privilege of buying watches and jewellery with a 15% Tax Refund.

Golf club Crans-sur-Sierre

Our recommended and European course simply to beone of the most SPECTACULAR golf clubs in the world, Crans-sur-Sierre.It is situated 1500 metres on the high reaches above the Rhone Valleyin Valais, Switzerland and yet lies a mere two hour drive from Geneva.

With views taking on the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc, the original course first a ninehole was laid out in 1906 and the second nine in 1908 at the behest of Sir Henry Lunn and designedby British architects Gedge & Freemantle. It was named Golf Planbramois. It went on to host the Swiss Open in 1939, which evolved in 1983into the European Masters.A second course, Golf Zires, was laid out with the first 9 holes opening in 1951. Until 1986 thisremained in play until it was extended and further redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 1988 and named

‘course Jack Nicklaus’.

At the end of 1995, the champion and golf course architect –Seve Ballesteros was commissioned to make improvements tothe course. So it held more of a challenge for the professionalgame to yet maintain its character and playability for theamateur club members, guest and golf tourists. However, almost as soon as those amendments had been com-pleted, the ravages of time and innovations in the game made itentirely necessary to make some extensive changes to thegreens and bunkers of the course to bring it back to glory.Seve undertook the new commission and the new SeverianoBallesteros course in its current incarnation was born. As withmany courses, the tweaking and primping continues season byseason to further improve the course. As it currently stands the 18-hole Seve course is a par 72 to6341m, and while it requires precision and a complete gamefrom Championship tees, it is playable by all levels of golfers. Infact, at this altitude, the thin air flatters the drive wonderfullyallowing even the most timid driver to see their ball fly.The terrain is tree-lined, open parkland with some narrowerfairways that can catch out the unwary, and the rest, thewide-open pasture that is picture perfect summer Switzerland.Seve Ballesteros and Gaston Barras officially inaugurated thecourse in September 2002 during the Omega European Masters.

Lost Ball or Out-of-BoundsAfter looking for a maximum of 5 minutes, you must go back towhere the shot was originally played from, and replay, incurring astroke and distance penalty.

Improving Your Swing PathYou cannot bend, break or hack anything growing or fixed if it im-proves you lie, your stance, or your area of intended swing.

Removing Foreign Objects (in play/ in a Bunker etc)You may not move or remove any loose impediments in a bunker un-less they are foreign to the area. E.g. you may remove a candy wrap-per but not a pine cone or tree branch . If, in moving looseimpediments, you accidentally move your ball, you must return theball to its original position and penalize yourself one stroke

Number of Allowed ClubsYou are only allowed to carry 14 clubs in your bag.

THE 10 MOST MISUNDERSTOOD RULES OF GOLF

Grounding Your Club in a HazardPractice swings may be taken inside a hazard as long as you don’ttouch the ground, sand or water with your club. The top of thegrass may be touched during a practice swing.

Accidentally Moving Your BallThere is a 1 stroke penalty for accidentally moving your ball and itmust be replaced in its original position before hitting.

Asking for AdviceIt’s against the rules of golf to ask an opponent what club theyhave hit. The penalty for this breech is loss of hole in match play,or a 2 shot penalty in stroke play.

Repairing the Line of your PuttYou may repair any ball marks in your line and remove anypebbles or foreign objects in your line, provided you do it withyour hand or club.

We’ve all been there!… What actually happens when something goes wrong on your round? These are a few of the mostmisunderstood rules of golf that seem to crop up from time to time. Many of you may not worry too much about them, but for those of you who do… Indulge :-)

Nicklaus was all of 19 at the time, but was mature beyond his years as aman and a golfer. No less than GeneSarazen, one of five men to win thecareer grand slam, said early on of theyoungster from Columbus, “I’ve neverseen a player who could shut himselfoff from all around him the wayNicklaus does”.Though eternally patient andperspicacious, he didn’t have the gameto win a National title until he wentthrough – as he calls it – “ a sort offinishing school”, in the summer of ‘59.

The lessons began inMuirfield when Nicklaus playedbeautifully for two days in his firsttaste of golf abroad.

A missed cut at winged footactually furthered his education. After watching his playingpartners, Doug Ford and GeneLittler, scramble to scores thatmade the cut while he shot two77’s, Nicklaus realised he had notyet figured out how to manage hisgame on days his ball striking was

TEELY BLUE EYES were all the rage in 1959. Yes it was 50+ yearsago when the Grammys were introduced, and legendary crooner, FrankSinatra was amongst those receiving acclaim. Meanwhile, in the ColoradoMountains, the world was introduced to a legend in the making– a superlative young golfer named Jack William Nicklaus.

Nicklaus, already well known in golfing circles after being namedto represent the US in the Walker Cup matches in Muirfield,Scotland, began his ascent to the pinnacle of the world’s sportingstage when he collected the first of his 20 major championships by

defeating defending champion, Charles R Coe, 1 up, in the 59th U.SAmateur at Broadmoor Country Club in Colorado Springs, Colo.

In assessing how to grasp the intricacies ofsuch management, Nicklaus in the summer o f ’59became a devoted student o f g o lf course design. He brought all of these new found enhancementsto h is competitive make up at the Broad -moor, where he engaged Coe, his Walker Cupcaptain , in one of the most exciting finals in thehistory of the amateur championships — a showdown Nicklaus still ranks as one of the toughest inwhich he’s ever participated .Nicklaus had not advanced past the first Round inhis previous U.S. Amateur appearances, but theyoung golfer trumpeted his improvementEarly that fateful week when he had dismantled atalented player with a famous name in the firstround. The player was Robert T Jones III, the sonof the celebrated Grand Slam winner, andNicklaus took him down with disarming ease, 7and 6.Reminded of this result recently, Nicklaus laughedat a memory he had not recalled in decades.“The funny part about that is that Bob and Italked a bit after the match , and he told me thestory of how he called his dad beforehand to seeif he was going to come out and watch ,” Nicklaussaid. “He told me that he asked his dad after thepairings came out if he were coming, and Bobsaid his dad asked who he was going to play. ‘O h ,I’m playing the young Nicklaus kid,’ Bob told hisdad, to which his dad asked , ‘Is that JackNicklaus?’ Bob told him it was, and his dad

replied , ‘Well, I’m not coming out and watchingyou lose 7 and 6.’“We both kind of laughed that the score ended upbeing that way. But, yeah, that was fun playingagainst Bob. Obviously, he was a very good player inhis own right”.Young Jack’s road got bumpier in the later rounds. He survived a close call over Dave Smith in the fifthround, which was played in a fog bank so thick thatspotters were needed throughout the course tofollow the golfer’s shots and another former U.Spublic links champion, Gene Andrews in the semi-final 1 up. Then came the final, and it was a nailbiter against the two-time Amateur champion.Despite a fine par-birdie-birdie start, an incredulousNicklaus found himself one down to Coe and hefell behind by as many as three in the morning 18holes before ending up two adrift at the break. Alanky Oklahoma oil broker, Coe actually held orshared the lead for the first 31 holes and ledoutright for the first 20. In contrast, Nicklaus, whoshot 71-69 to Coe’s 69-73, led for only 4 holes in

total. Nicklaus finally nosed ahead in the 32nd holethanks to his hallmark patience, as he converted his

10th par in 11 holes. An uncharacteristically sloppy bogey from Nicklaus

at the 17th set up a dramatic finish. With the matchsquare, the two men drilled3-woods into the fairwayat the Broadmoor’s home hole, a 430 yard par 4that doglegs sharply right and up.

Their drives came to rest three crucial yardsapart, with Nicklaus’ ball stopping just beyond hisopponent’s, meaning he would have theadvantage of hitting the second onto the green. That advantage made all the difference to a youngplayer who was proving to be savvier than he hadshown to be only months before when he playedin his first Masters and missed the cut at theOpen.Choosing an 8 iron, Coe took dead aim at theflag, but his approach failed to hold the green andhis ball raced over the putting surface and down aslope into a grassy hollow. Fingering his own 8iron, Nicklaus watched Coe’s shot intently andthen opted to hit a punch 9 iron. His approachtrundled to within 8 feet short of the hole.Coe, not conceding, nearly chipped in from thealmost impossible shot, but the opening was thereand the precocious Nicklaus took it. He holed hisleft to right birdie putt for a 1 up victory tobecome the youngest U.S Amateur champion innearly half a century.

In his autobiography, My Story, Nicklaus wrote: “Ifthere is ever really a moment when a man can say adream began, and he tried to begin to give itsubstance, this for me was the moment.”Years later, that sense of discovery he felt thatsummer was still vibrant.“I think in some ways I still didn’t know how good Iwas at golf, even when I was named the No.1amateur at the end of the year, “ Nicklaus said.“But I figured that I must be better than I thought, and so winning the US Amateur was probably myfirst stepping stone to realising that I might reallyhave a future in the game”.Maybe young Jack didn’t know, but his fatherCharlie did. In calling home to herald his son’svictory, Charlie Nicklaus was moved to proclaim,

“I believe our son was born to greatness!”

Tiger vs. Jack: Are majors the only way to measuregreatness? We all know the score: 18-14. Jack Nicklaus. Tiger Woods.Major championships. But does that mean the Golden Bear is the definitive answerto the question of "Who is the greatest golfer of all time?" ifTiger never surpasses Jack in that category? It's not thatsimple.Certainly, majors define careers, but perhaps it's too narrow-minded to only look at a player's performance in golf's fourmarquee events. After all, would anyone rank Andy Northand his two U.S. Open titles ahead of one-time major winnerslike Lanny Wadkins, Davis Love III and Tom Weiskopf? So what else should count when measuring golf's all-timebest? Total PGA Tour titles is the obvious place to start.Woods' 79 wins trails only Sam Snead (82) on the list, having passed Nicklaus' total of 73 last year at age 36.You want more consistency? How about Tiger's record of142 consecutive cuts made, a streak that spanned more thanseven years. Nicklaus' best was 105, the third-best mark ever. But isn't being great really about dominating the competitionrather than compiling numbers? In that regard, Tiger comesout on top in a few other telling stats.

Woods has the most seasons of winning five ormore times on the PGA Tour with 10, includingthis year. Nicklaus is tied for third with seven(Snead accomplished the feat eight times). Not surprisingly, Woods also has claimed themost money titles ever (he's already wrapped up2013) with 10, as well as the most Player of theYear awards and Vardon Trophies for the bestscoring average on tour. There is no argumentthat Woods already has been the game'sundisputed best player more times than Nicklausever was.Perhaps the most impressive stat that speaks tothat is Woods' overall winning percentage ofabout 27 per cent. In comparison, Nicklaus wonabout 12 per cent of his starts (Ben Hogan wonat more than a 20-percent clip). Of course,Nicklaus' number came down as he played pasthis prime, but it would take a lot of really leanyears for Woods' percentage to come close tothat.Add it all up and suddenly 18-14 doesn't seem asone-sided. Of course, Tiger, 37, still has time totilt that score in his favour or perhaps pull even. And if that happens, even the most ardentNicklaus supporters would have to concedeWoods wins the tiebreaker.

THE three-time Ryder Cup captain and father of Kirsty Gallacher, isstill recovering from his recent cardiac arrest but he’s on a mission tosave others by ensuring defibrillators are placed in golf clubs aroundthe UK

The last memory Bernard Gallacher has before the cardiac arrest thatalmost claimed his life is driving to the airport on his way to afunction. He next remembers waking up in hospital, wondering whaton earth was going on. The former golf professional and Ryder Cup-winning captain refers to this period as his "missing week".

The 64-year-old, who was saved only because the hotel in Scotlandwhere he was due to speak had a defibrillator, says: "It's a mostpeculiar feeling but apparently memory loss is quite common aftercardiac arrest. I missed the drama."

Bernard, who is now on a mission with wife Lesley to get the devicesinto every golf club in Britain and Ireland, had no symptoms. He says:"I had no pain, no warning of what was coming. People said Isuddenly collapsed. They said it looked like I'd been floored by aboxer."

On the way to hospital in Aberdeen in August his heart stopped threemore times and was re-started by medics. The cardiac arrests weretriggered by a problem with the natural wiring in his heart.

"I do feel incredibly lucky," he says. "One of the guests at the eventgave me CPR and then used the defibrillator. There's no doubt hesaved my life. Statistically I was unlikely to make it. Only one in 10people survive a cardiac arrest and I'm one of them."

Lesley recalls flying back from Spain, where they have ahome, not sure if her husband would be alive by the timeshe arrived. "Bernard was still unconscious and they hadchilled his body to slow everything down and preventany further damage," she says. "There were wires andtubes everywhere and we were given the worst casescenario. I thought we would lose him. It was horrible."

Several days later doctors became cautiously optimistic.Ultimately Bernard's previous good fitness levels andhealthy lifestyle, supervised by Lesley who is a dietician, helped him pull through.

He's since been fitted with an implantable defibrillator, designed to kick-start his heart if there are further cardiacarrests. Bernard, who lives in Ascot, Surrey, andfamously lifted the Ryder Cup for Europe in 1995,reveals that it's already been activated twice.

"There have been a couple of scares in the past month,"he says. "The second one was more serious. I was athome and had probably overdone things. I'd earlierplayed my first full round of golf and washed the car.

This time I could feel something happening. I was sittingdown and made the mistake of trying to get up andcollapsed.

"I don't know if it was a full cardiac arrest but the devicein my chest did its job. What's happened to me hascertainly made me aware of my own mortality. Untilsomething like this happens you think you areindestructible."

Golf GreatBernard Gallagheron his cardiac arrest:

“I feel so luckyto be alive”

128 THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA

Bernard's two weeks in hospital and time spent afterwardsrecovering gave the couple an opportunity to consider howthey could use his high profile in sport to try to cut thenumber of deaths from cardiac arrests. In the UK 60,000happen outside hospitals.

I had no pain, no warning of what was coming. People said Isuddenly collapsed. They said it looked like I'd been flooredby a boxerCurrently only about a third have the machines, which aresimple to operate. If used within the first few minutes, alongwith CPR, they can increase the likelihood of pulling throughby up to 75 per cent. That's much higher than with CPR (involving chestcompression) alone. But the machines, which deliver shocks, must be used quickly. Success rates decline by about 10 percent with each 60 second delay. The idea is to have the machines in golf clubhouses andaround the course, usually in halfway huts where snacks areserved.Golf courses tend to be in rural areas and it can be difficultfor ambulances to get to players who collapse on thefairways. Golf professionals, greenkeepers and other workerswill all be encouraged to take defibrillator training and haveplans in place to deal with a player's sudden collapse. Ifnecessary buggies can be used to transport the machines toreach victims on the course.

The number of deaths on UK courses is not known but a study twoyears ago found that more than 3,000 golfers die on American coursesevery year due to cardiac arrests, with the third and 18th holesproving to be the deadliest locations.Bernard, whose daughter Kirsty Gallacher is a presenter for SkySports News, says: "Golf is the focus of the campaign because of mybackground but I hope it's only the start. We'd eventually like to seedefibrillators at every swimming pool, gym and leisure centre, as wellas in schools."These buildings are usually in the heart of communities so thedefibrillators can have a much wider use if everyone knows wherethey are. It's compulsory to have fire extinguishers in public buildingsbut cardiac arrests kill more people."At golf clubs around the UK the aim is that competitions will be heldto generate enough funds to buy the machines, which cost about£1,000 each, and to raise awareness. The campaign will also providefinancial help in some cases.

Following the scares in late 2013 Bernard is still taking his recoverygradually. He wants to continue playing golf, get back to broadcastingand hopes to be given the all clear to drive again.Doctors will monitor his heart and his home has been equipped with amachine that allows Bernard to pop some pads on his chest and send areading to his consultant in London. He adds: "Having been through a cardiac arrest Lesley and I both feelpassionate about this campaign. I've been given another chance andwant to help others."

Seve saw it.

Remembering Medinah 2012and the astonishingEuropean Ryder Cup successBy A Lyon Dean

“ ”MEDINAH, Ill. -- This story begins on a sandy beach in thenorth of Spain. A boy with an old 3-iron. Hitting stones. Severi-ano Ballesteros, who in time would work magic. Better with a3-iron out of a greenside bunker than most men with a sandwedge. Seve would win in ways no one else could imagine. Tocall him beautiful is to be precise, for he came to the world withlooks and charm and with a gift of talent that he shared with usall.

He died a year ago, 54 years old, a cancer in his brain.

He was in Chicago during the historic Ryder Cup win for Europein 2012 according to Olazabal. Sunday morning , before anyonestruck a golf shot in this Ryder Cup, the European captain, Jose-Maria Olazabal, told a reporter, "I felt Seve in the team room lastnight."They'd been friends and partners, Ballesteros and Olazabal. Bothwon the Masters. They won and lost Ryder Cups together. Theyshared life. Sewn into the left sleeve of the European team'sshirts for the Sunday singles competition, Olazabal had asked forthe iconic image of Seve, an arm raised, Seve triumphant.

This was the kind of day Seve Ballesteros lived for. It was aday when something gets done that no one thought could bedone. To win the Ryder Cup, the Europeans needed an his-toric, unprecedented comeback. They needed to win 8 of 12singles points on the other team's home course. They won8.5.

They won those points against an American dozen that hadnearly turned the thing into a rout in the first two days. Asthe shadows lengthened at Medinah Country Club late thatfateful Saturday afternoon, the U.S. led, 10-4. With 14points available, needing only 4 to win, a certain confidencesettled on the Americans -- until, in Saturday's last two four-ball matches, the Europeans produced unlikely victories.

Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald defeated Tiger Woods andSteve Stricker. Then came Ian Poulter, the fire-breathingEnglishman, "a cross between Rod Stewart and SidVicious," broadcaster Peter Jacobsen called him. Came IanPoulter with five straight birdies on the last five holes tobeat Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson.

There, in Poulter's work, was the turning point in this story.Poulter recognized it. "It was amazing to see the atmospherechange in that team room," he said. "The spirit, I mean, itjust changed. ... All week we'd been beaten quite clearly, and we just felt there was that little glimmer of hope."

130 THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA

Two hours into Sunday's rounds, the glimmer had grown to aglow. Midway through most of the 12 matches, the Europeansled three and were all-square in seven. Suddenly, the game wasafoot. On a golden autumn day, with Medinah's thousands of treesblazing orange, red, and yellow, the Ryder Cup became the bestsports event in America. Better than any World Series spreadover two midnight-oil weeks ... better than any NBA Finals, because, really, Oklahoma City? ... better than any Super Bowlbecause Mother Nature's spectacle is better than anything theNFL can create ... better, mostly, because the Ryder Cup is golf, and golf, more than any sport, gives us real narratives that, inthe best of its stories, cause us to wonder how in hell anybodycan breathe let alone draw it back for a shot over a pond the ap-proximate size of the Atlantic. Then the blue went up on the scoreboards, the European blue. The Scotsman, Paul Lawrie, defeated Brandt Snedeker, 5-and-3.

That wasn't supposed to happen. Then Rory McIlroy defeat-ed Keegan Bradley, 2-and-1 -- this after McIlroy had losttrack of Illinois time and needed a state-trooper escort toreach Medinah 12 minutes before his tee time. Next, Poulterdefeated Webb Simpson, 2-up, and he talked, haltingly, of"this good man on my left sleeve right now that's going topull us through this."A fantasy, that. But the signs were there for those whowould see.

It turns out that McIlroy can make six birdies in Ryder Cupplay without warming up, unless stuffing a breakfast sand-wich into one's mouth while putting on one's shoes is warm-up enough at age 23. Soon enough, three Europeans hadchipped in for birdies from distances as great as 100 feet. There were groups behind, the story moving quickly to itsend now.

Crazy happened. Seve saw it. (Cont.)

132 THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA

Lee Westwood heard silence and knew what it meant during hismatch with Matt Kuchar: "Quiet... then you knew that when youstart hearing fans, 'Matt, we need you, they are under pressure."

The story is things we didn't know. "A Ryder Cup is not for thefaint of heart," Poulter said, and the Belgian Nicolas Colseartssaid, "It gets you through the guts." The Canadian sportswriterBruce Arthur, in a tweet, called the developing story a mash-upof "Happy Gilmore and an Idiocracy Presidential convention."Meaning, let's guess, that Arthur liked the goofy improbabilityof it all. "It's what golf is all about," U.S. team captain DavisLove III said. Now we have seen Keegan Bradley on fire. We have seen JasonDufner impervious. Tiger Woods, the ultimate soloist, camedown the first fairway this morning to cheer for a teammate.Zach Johnson has iron in his spine.

All those Europeans, with their stout hearts, earned this RyderCup; with the Cup at stake, they made 51 birdies to the Ameri-cans' 44. This after trailing in birdies the first two days, 99-74.

Whoever wrote this implausible story foreshadowed its end ear-ly. The fourth American out, Phil Mickelson seemed to have acritical point won only to see the Englishman Justin Rose steal itby rolling in three straight putts on the last three holes, the lasttwo for heroic birdies. And Rose said of his last stroke, "As soon as I holed that putt, and as soon as I came off the green, my first thought was ofSeve.""He's been an inspiration for this team all week long, and whoknows, if something crazy happens today, I know that were aregoing to be looking upwards."

Crazy happened. Seve saw it.THE FINEST SCANDINAVIA 133

BJORN AGAIN(*may contain other bad puns)

By A Lyon-Dean

Articulate and insightful, the Dane exerts intelligent authority as chairmanof the European Tour's Tournament Committee. At the same time he is nurturing a game that looks capable of influencingthe outcome of many an event in 2014. Indeed in the year of his 43rdbirthday Bjorn appears destined for a Ryder Cup return. He would be playing for a captain chosen by the committee he chairs. Notthat you will find Bjorn daring to think that far into the future. Playing forPaul McGinley's Europe this autumn is parked firmly in the back of hismind.

“I have to say the end of last year was probably my best golf since2000/2001”

As he prepares for his first event of 2014 he isn't looking further than theend of January. This short-term thinking has been his approach during athree-year renaissance which has returned him to the form of his life.Bjorn ended 2013 with victory at the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City hav-ing finished second in the World Cup in his previous event. In late summerhe won the European Masters in Switzerland and he is back in the world'stop 25.This week he took time from his preparations for the Volvo Championstournament in Durban to discuss with BBC Sport his sustained excellenceon the course and the state of the European Tour."It was probably the first time I can ever remember coming into the lastbit of the season feeling fresh in my mind and feeling really, really goodabout everything," Bjorn admitted."I had a golf swing that was working and a belief that was working and itwas a great finish to the year, so you start a new year with a lot of hope."

I probably never really 100% believed that I was goingto play that well again," added the man who was runnerup at the 2000 and 2003 Open Championships.During this period of fluctuating fortune Bjorn has de-veloped into a genuinely big beast in golf politics. Herevels in the power games of committee and boardrooms.Bjorn became chairman of the Tournament Committeein 2007.

"I would be trying to find out what goes on anyway. Now I get all the information up front and I know it be-fore anyone else," he said."I enjoy doing it. It has its surprises once in a while thatyou might not enjoy so much but any job you take on inthe world would be like that."I feel I have the confidence of the players and as longas I do that it is something I will continue to do."We geta lot of things done. Thomas Bjorn looking at Ben trophy hoisting aloftthe claret jug in 2003.Bjorn believes there will be more changes to the tour's hierarchy. He describes these as "interesting times" but warns that cautionis also needed. "Sometimes in business you can jump in toohard," he said.

Wise words from a man embarking on the 19th year of his career."I was very determined when I became chairman that I didn'twant to leave it in a worse place when I finish the job," he said."We have gone through a really, really rough time in the worldfinancially and that's something that we probably felt more thananybody. We are coming out of it now and hopefully we can startgrowing again."While it seems the Tour is back on an upward curve we know thatBjorn's golf is already in that position. Can he translate this stellar form into a return to a certain matchto be played at Gleneagles in September?"Hopefully Ryder Cups will come my way as a bonus from stayingdetermined and focused on playing good golf." It is a typicallypragmatic response to the prospect of returning after a 12-yearabsence.And heading into the new year there's little reason to believe hewon't return to McGinley's side to face the US.Especially as you know he will be observing the mantra that hasbeen serving his golf and tour so well in recent times: "Just don'tget ahead of yourself."

He constantly reminds them that this is where their careers began andurges them to reserve "that one percent" for the tour that spawnedthe opportunities they have today. The 15-time winner is convinced the controversy of forcing playersto play two out of three events in the Final Series is close to beingresolved. "I had conversations with pretty much all of them and weare not that far apart," he said. But Bjorn accepts that the European Tour will continue to struggleto compete with the all-powerful PGA Tour in the US. "We can stillhave a tour that works even though we have a tour in America thatis bigger and stronger.

"We have just got to realise that this is the case and the EuropeanTour might never be as strong as the PGA Tour."

He regards the recent appointment of a chairman of the Tour'sboard from the world of business as inevitable. David Williams suc-ceeds Neil Coles and becomes the first non-professional golfer tofulfill the role."It's a sign of the times, that's the way we have got to go. We havegot to have our business relationships so strong today with massivecompanies around the world," Bjorn said."We've got to have the people that can go into those relationshipsthat have the knowledge of how to deal with that."Yes, the players wanted change and they got change but I don'tbelieve it was so much a push from the players rather than it was…

The Masters 2014: Eisenhower Tree removed at Augusta National

Augusta National has been forced to adapt its 17th hole ahead of the2014 Masters after an iconic tree was removed because of storm damage.

The Eisenhower Tree sat to the left of the 17th fairway and was anobstacle for players positioning their tee shot.

"The loss of the Eisenhower Tree is difficult news to accept," said BillyPayne, chairman of Augusta National.

Did you know?

Four-time Masters winner Tiger Woods injured his Achilles tendonhitting a shot under the Eisenhower Tree in 2011.

He revealed the rest of the course suffered no damage, with the 78thMasters due to start on 10 April.

The Eisenhower Tree - thought to be over 100-years-old - was badlydamaged during an ice storm last week and removed after AugustaNational consulted arborists.

Jack Nicklaus, a six-time Masters winner, said: "The Eisenhower Tree issuch an iconic fixture and symbol of tradition at Augusta National. Itwas such an integral part of the game and one that will be sorelymissed."

Sometimes referred to as Ike's Tree, the loblolly pine became known asEisenhower's Tree after US President Dwight D. Eisenhower requested itbe removed in 1956, as so many of his tee shots struck it.

Payne added: "We have begun deliberations of the best way to addressthe future of the 17th hole and to pay tribute to this iconic symbol of ourhistory. Rest assured, we will do both appropriately."

David Duval, who has finished in the top six at August on fouroccasions, described the news as "terrible".

He said: "That tree made you really pay attention to where you weredriving it. It made for a very narrow tee shot. You either had to go upover it or around it.''

Annika Sorenstam announced in May of 2008 that she would retire from competitive golf atthe end of that season after one of the most successful and prolific golf careers (of any sex).Since this Souvenir book is celebrating the Finest attributes, personalities and everything golf,we felt it apt to take a final look - or swing - at possibly the greatest of them all.

Annika Sorenstam.

Annika Sorenstam is one of the greatest female golfers ever - many would say she's the bestever. Combining a cool efficiency with a passionate desire to win, Sorenstam was among thebest players on Tour from her debut in the mid-1990s through the remainder of the decade. But as the century turned, Sorenstam went on a run of success that rivals or surpassesanything else ever seen on the LPGA Tour.

Sorenstam preferred tennis in her childhood, but took up golf at age 12. She quickly becamegood enough to start winning, but was very shy. She's said that she sometimes blew shots inorder to finish second and avoid having to talk to anyone after a win.

Sorenstam attended the University of Arizona where she was a two-time All-Americaselection and co-player of the year in 1991. She won the 1991 NCAA Championship and the1992 World Amateur Championship.

Sorenstam turned pro in 1993 and was Rookie of the Year on the Ladies European Tour. Shemoved up to the LPGA in 1994 and, although she didn't win on the LPGA, was Rookie of theYear there, too. (She did get her first pro win in 1994 at the Women's Australian Open.)

That first LPGA win finally came at the 1995 U.S. Women's Open, and Sorenstam took offon what might be the best career in LPGA history. From 1995 through 2006, Sorenstam woneight money titles and never finished lower than fourth on the money list. She won 69tournaments and 10 majors in that span.

Sorenstam was one of the best players throughout the mid- to late-90s, winning three times in1997, six in 1997, four in 1998, twice in 1999, and five times in 2000.

Then she rededicated herself to being the best, hitting the gym to add strength - and yards toher drives. She befriended Tiger Woods and picked up some of Woods' practice habits; sheimproved her chipping and putting.

Sorenstam's domination from 2001-2005 was complete: she was money leader, low scorerand Player of the Year every year. Her win totals included 11 in 2002 and 10in 2005.

She became one of the longesthitters on the tour without losingany of her pinpoint accuracy.Along the way, she becamemuch more comfortable in frontof the cameras, her publicdemeanor becoming moreconfident, and won over manymore fans.

At the 2003 Colonial, Sorenstam became the first woman since Babe Didrikson Zaharias toplay on the PGA Tour. Sorenstam shot 71-75 and missed the cut, but earned plaudits for herplay and the way she handled the publicity circus.

Sorenstam dominated the LPGA Tour again in 2005, but her play slipped in 2006 - with"only" three wins, she was surpassed by Lorena Ochoa at the top of the LPGA pecking order.

Sorenstam suffered a neck injury in 2007 that limited her schedule, and at the end of the yearshe had recorded only her second winless season on the LPGA.

By early 2008, however, Sorenstam was back, with three wins early in the season. However,on May 13, 2008, Sorenstam announced it would be her final season on the LPGA Tour, andshe left competitive golf at the end of the year.
