2020 Marks 150 Years of Sharing God’s Love in Zanesville
As we crossed the threshold to a new year this week, it is too soon to know exactly what 2020 will
hold, or whether those resolutions we have just made stand a chance. Yet we enter into the new
year confident that God will bless our lives in big and small ways in the days ahead if we but pay
attention. Ministry here at First Christian Church will no doubt look familiar in many ways in the
new year. In other areas, God may be leading us into new opportunities for growth and mission.
2020 marks the 150th anniversary of our witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Zanesville, Ohio.
Since its charter in 1870, the ministry of First Christian Church has changed lives and helped shape
our community. Built on a firm foundation, we will continue to proclaim God’s love into the New
Year and beyond.
The Anniversary Committee has been hard at work for several months planning for us to celebrate
our sesquicentennial throughout the year with various events and activities. We also want to
celebrate by continuing our witness to our community in need of the Good News we have to share.
We will have special opportunities for service, study and mission throughout the year. Even as we
celebrate our history, we look ahead and listen for God’s call in the life of our church. To help us
do that, our 2020 Visioning Team will begin its work this month.
A list of Anniversary events and dates will be finalized and made available in a few weeks but mark
your calendars and plan to be with us on Sunday, January 26th as we lift up our 50-year members
and hear from some special guests. 2020 is a year full of promise and possibility for us as a
congregation. My prayers are with you all for a new year filled with God’s blessing. A new year
that finds us sharing the love of Jesus with all God’s children.
Shalom,
The Z-Disciple JANUARY 2020

Advent Outreach Projects Summary
Thank you for blessing others during the season of
Advent by being part of our many special Advent
projects. Through your donations, efforts and
support we were able to: deliver 31 cookie trays to
our homebound members, sponsor 40 children in
Muskingum Co. through Prison Fellowship Angel
Tree, provide 50 gift bags to the residents of
Altercare Care Center, assemble 50 blessing bags
for the homeless to be distributed through Homeless
Hands of Zanesville. In addition, we collected 66
hats, gloves, mittens, and socks for our mitten
garland to be shared with local agencies and filled
the grocery cart for Eastside. Thank you all for
your generous hearts and hands.
Attention 50 Year Members! If you have been a
part of the life and ministry of First Christian
Church for 50 years or more, we would like to
honor you. Plan to be present in worship with us on
Sunday, January 26th as we begin our 150th
Anniversary celebrations. Please let us know if
you, or someone you know, has been a member for
over 50 years by signing the sheet on the bulletin
board, calling the church office or marking it on the
Sunday friendship registers in the bulletin

The Prayer Shawl Ministry is requesting more
prayer shawls. Anyone interest in donating one can
see Karen Huy. Any pattern, size, or color will be
fine. Thank you!.
Online Directory
Have you downloaded the app for the Instant
Church Directory? Members who have are excited
about having up to date information about fellow
church members. If you have questions regarding
the app, please contact Janice in the church office.
A few print copies of the directory are available.
Check the bookshelf in the hallway or place a
request in the office.
Online and Text Giving
For your convenience, First Christian Church is
now accepting online and text giving.
Text Giving
Text GEN to (740) 202-9500
You will receive a link to instructions on setting up
your text giving account.
Several members have recently begun participating
in the text giving program and we thank you.
If you are still considering that option, please keep
the following items in mind:
• When possible, utilize a bank account ACH
payment source as the fee is simply 30
cents.
• Consider larger credit card transactions, for
example if someone were to give $20
weekly, the fee would be less if they gave
$80 monthly. Unfortunate as it is, the
smaller the donation amount, the larger the
fees are. Also, for this and several other
reasons, there is a minimum $5 donation
when using a credit card.

What’s Happening in Youth Groups?
In December the JC and Kingdom Kids went
Christmas caroling and delivered Christmas cheer
and a gift to our members living at the Oaks at
Bethesda, the Oaks at Northpointe, Primrose and
Altercare. It was a joyful way to spend an afternoon!
We concluded the evening by snuggling up in the
youth room together and watching the movie, “The
Star”.
The JC and Kingdom Kids will gather again on
Sunday, January 26 from 11:45 - 1:00 pm. The
children will share a pizza lunch after church. After
learning about the many ways our servicemen and
women serve our country, we will pack a care
package for Jared Robison, who is currently
deployed in the Middle East, as well as sign cards for
the career service men and women of our church
family. Please RSVP by January 22nd
In December the Chi Rho and CYF youth provided
leadership at the Advent Workshop where families
gathered to share a meal, make Christmas crafts and
sing carols. They also enjoyed a Christmas party at
the Lind Arena. The youth will have a couple of
weeks off for the holidays. Regular meetings will
resume on January 5th from 6-7:30 in the youth
room.

The Z-Disciple JANUARY 2020
As we leave 2019 behind, may we approach 2020 with renewed energy and resolve to be kinder to one another,
offer a helping hand to the less fortunate, and perhaps step out of our comfort zone to help someone in need.
No one person can end hunger in Zanesville or feed the people at Christ’s Table but together as part of the body
of Christ, the little things that we do together will make a difference!
THANK YOU!
Thanks to all who supported our 2019 Christmas Offering. We will be using the Christmas Offering to support
Eastside Community Ministry. We will also be helping Stepping Stone, a transitional home for the homeless
opened on Woodlawn Avenue earlier in 2019. And lastly, we will be helping the Muskingum County Suicide
Prevention Coalition, Mental Health & Recovery Services.
Thanks to all for the donations of mittens, gloves, scarves and winter hats that were added to or placed beneath
the mitten garland located in the main hallway. These items will be distributed to Zanesville City pre-school,
Salvation Army and Eastside Community Ministry.
And lastly, thanks to all who adopted angels from the Christmas tree in the chapel. We helped provide gifts to
37 children who live in Muskingum County and who have a mother or father incarcerated in a state correctional
facility. The gifts we provided let those children know that they were not forgotten by their mom or dad.
Food Collection
As you do your weekly grocery shopping consider buying an extra can or two of soup to place in our grocery
cart located next to the elevator. Food donations are given to the Eastside Community Ministry Pantry. We are
thankful for your generosity and continued support of this important ministry, feeding God’s people.
Christ’s Table
Start the New Year out by helping feed God’s people. We will be serving at Christ’s Table, Saturday, January
25th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The sign-up sheet is located on the bulletin board in the main hallway.

Joy to the World: Your Compassion at Work
Dear Friends, It’s that time of year again: in church, you hear words of hope and peace, comfort and joy. But
outside of the sanctuary, life feels anything BUT peaceful. The traffic, the crowds, and the very long to-do list
make for added stress in a time that is supposed to be about family and celebration.
One of the things that can make the season feel hectic is the expectation of gift-giving. Many are feeling the final
push to do last minute shopping, getting every item crossed off the list.
Here’s the good news-- whatever holiday stress might be pulling you in a hundred directions, and whatever gifts
you may still need to find--you have already given the most important gift. Through your support of Week of
Compassion this year, our wider Church has responded to needs around the world. Through your gifts to Week of
Compassion, families find new opportunities; communities grow stronger; and there is much to celebrate.
Look at the map below, and you’ll get a glimpse of the places where our Church has responded through Week of
Compassion in 2019. You will see that the sheer number of responses is overwhelming; and you will see that they
cover a wide geographical range, spanning many cultures, climates and types of terrain.
What you may not be able to see on the map is the number of lives that have been transformed by this ministry--
which is your ministry. What you may not quite be able to hear are the powerful stories of life, love and hope that
people tell after having received support from Week of Compassion.
In the past year, our Church has responded to flooding in the Midwest and drought in India; to families separated at
the Southwest border and to families in refugee camps in the Middle East. Disciples presence has been known in
agriculture projects from Central America to Africa. Women have been empowered through vocational
opportunities from Haiti to Iraq, and children have received education from South America to Eastern Europe.
You’ve also given the gift of clean water to families in Indonesia as they recover from a devastating tsunami and to
families in Mozambique following a terrible cyclone. Your gifts have gone to support mental health for survivors
of wildfires in Northern California and for children traumatized by storms and displacement in South Texas. And
you helped churches rebuild following a hurricane in Puerto Rico, and a tornado in Missouri.
Through your compassion, you have given life and light in so many places and transformed so many lives.
In this season of joy, there is much to celebrate in work that we have already done, together. As many of us gather
around tables this season with our loved ones, I am grateful for you and your partnership. I am grateful for the ways
in which we create tables of peace and reconciliation all over the world, each and every day. There is much to
celebrate, and there is much work ahead to do together. This season, and all through the year, know that together,
our Church is bringing joy to the world.
With Gratitude,
Rev. Vy Nguyen
Executive Director
