22% of YWCAs provide aquatic-based safety, health, family activity, and instructor certification programs

YWCA aquatics programs are unique due to mission-based outreach and involvement efforts designed to ensure participation among all facets of the community. YWCA aquatic programs, no matter what one’s age, ensure:

Access to swim lessons and aquatic programs for low income families

Development of water safety skills and confidence

Increased strength and coordination

Sped-up recovery from medical conditions

Continued healthy physical and cognitive functioning

Opportunities for parent-child and family bonding

Opportunities to develop neighborhood and peer relationships

Motivation to achieve more and compete in a healthy way among peers

Funding

YWCAs report receiving more than $9 million annually to fund aquatics programs, as follows:

79%: Fees for service

7%: YWCA fundraising efforts and events

14%: United Way or similar organizations, corporations, foundations, government and other nonprofits

Evaluation

70% of YWCAs providing aquatic services report that they formally evaluate swim instruction

outcomes. A sampling of achievements among those served includes:

85% of the children enrolled in the YWCA’s Early Learning Center increased their swim ability

and learned basic water safety.

90% of participants who completed at least one block of swim instruction in Swim for Change

made progress. This program addresses drowning and fitness disparities affecting communities of

color. 91% of participants are people of color and 90% are from low income households.

35% of our learn-to-swim students continue with the YWCA for more than one year, refining

higher levels of stroke development and proficiency in all four basic swim strokes.

90% of Los Pececitos swim participants showed increases in: comfort in the water, swimming

skills and knowledge of swimming safety.

90% of the individuals in our swim programs improved at least one level each session.
