Namaste,

India is an incredibly religious as well as a spiritual country. It is home to some of the most colorful and illuminous festivals in the world. While the entire country celebrates all the festivals spectacularly all round the year, The Yoga Institute, in its 101st year, is also celebrating a distinguished recognition.

The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, has conferred TheYoga Institute, Mumbai with the Prime Minister’s Award for Outstanding Contribution for Promotion and Development of Yoga for the year 2018-19. This prestigious award was presented in the category of ‘National Institute’ at a special ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. In recognition of the honour, the Prime Minister said, “The Yoga Institute has set the standard for yoga education, research, publication, innovation and creativity. This award is a testament to the skill, ingenuity and philanthropic vision of its founders.”

On receiving the award from the Prime Minister, Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra gratefully shared, “On behalf of everyone at The Yoga Institute, I would like to thank our Hon’blePrime Minister and the AYUSH committee members for this honour. We are humbled to be recognized for all the hard work done by the Institute over the last 100 years. We are committed to upholding this legacy and shall always remain at the service of India, and the world.”

Read on to learn how our every breath can be celebratory with the practice of Ujjayi – The Victorious Breath. While life goes on gloriously at the Institute without the presence of our beloved Dr. Sahab, let us understand his revered thoughts on how Yoga can gel with life.

Live life Yogi style!

PEARLS OF WISDOM

Smt. Hansaji J. YogendraDirector, The Yoga Institute.

regnancy is a time of transformation, not only for the

Pbody but also for the mind. With joy and expectation come a host of other emotions - worry, fear and anxiety -

especially if the child is the rst one. Our skin as the largest organ of the body is the rst one to get affected, showing quickly on the outside when something is amiss inside. But maintaining healthy, glowing skin throughout pregnancy is possible - and yoga can certainly help.

Diet

As the saying goes, ‘true beauty comes from within’ and this is certainly true for healthy, glowing skin during pregnancy. As the skin is the largest organ, all internal organs get involved and need to be healthy as well. Constipation should be avoided at all cost, especially for expecting mothers, which is why food habits have to be correct. One meal of fruits is recommended during the day, accompanied by seasonal vegetables, which should never be deep fried but lightly heated or sauteed, thus keeping all nutrients intact.

Fats like butter, oil and ghee and dairy products like paneer and curd keep the viscera intact and contain friendly bacteria like lactobacillus. However, as sensitivities may shift during pregnancy, those not tolerant emotionally or physically of animal products may substitute those products with fresh vegetable oils or natural nut oils like almond, walnut or peanut oil.

Breathing

Expecting mothers are not only eating for two, they are breathing for two as well. So more than ever, during pregnancy it is vital to breathe oxygen into the system, which can be achieved through simple pranayama: Purak (inhalation), rechak (exhalation), kumbhak (retention) and shunya (suspension) are all benecial as well as a full inhalation - let’s say for 5 seconds - stoppage of breath for 5 seconds and then breathing out completely.

Circulation

Keeping the circulation going during pregnancy is important even though expecting mothers may feel heavy or lethargic but a daily walk, if just for a few minutes, preferably in nature, is a must. Also important is not to wear clothes that are tight - including inner garments - or those made of less breathable materials; the skin should be free to breathe.

Cleaning

Our skin needs cleaning, no doubt, as the external world is polluted; in metros like Mumbai especially. But this does not mean that we should be rough and scrub ourselves very hard; cleaning the skin should always be gentle and more so during pregnancy as the skin can suffer a lot, especially the stomach, chest and back area due to expansion.

The skin can also become dry and scratchy, in which case the natural oils of the skin need to be retained. This can be done by applying oil or a natural lubricant mixed out of half a cup of milk, one spoon full of curd, one spoon full of honey and half a spoon of ghee, which should be applied on the problem areas.

Then it can be removed with water by using a scrubber or a towel to rub the skin. Soap should only be applied around the big joints like armpits, groin and the feet. Thus, the circulation is revived. Before drying the body, one should rub a bit of almond, coconut, groundnut or olive oil (depending on one’s preference) onto the palms and then onto the body. By applying the oil when the body is not yet fully dry, it will not get so sticky.

If there is scratchiness during the day, expecting women should not scratch to avoid stretch marks. They should apply any of the recommended oils again, a body lotion with aloe vera or fresh aloe vera. At any time, the skin should be handled gently and any blemishes treated carefully, for example mosquito bites should be just pinched, not scratched. We should also not be too sensitive about them, pimples for example, as they will go away in due time. Sunset or sunrise rays are also benecial for the skin.

At night, plain water steam inhalation for the face (wiped dry gently when done) is good for the skin and relaxing right before sleeping. To calm down emotionally, om chanting, humming (bhramari) and pranayama are recommended. Keep in mind that most physical problems are known to be psychosomatic and though it is very common to feel anger, depression or anxiety, we should not get into it. Activities like asanas, pranayama, walking and singing can help keep a positive attitude.

In summary, we should be aware that we create our own world, so thinking good thoughts will make it good. Faith-building exercises are also recommended to increase faith and decrease worry. We should plan the future but not worry about it. Ten positive points are also a useful technique to create positive changes not only in pregnancy.

FROM THE TEACHER’S DIARY

STRESS, CANCER AND BREATH

In physics, the concept of stress is explained as the ability of an object to withstand an external deforming force. Stress in humans can be dened as an event or a circumstance (either external or internal), which exerts a potentially deforming force on the internal environment in the body-mind. The individual responds to theses stressor forces and carries out specic activities in an effort to maintain homeostasis (constancy of the internal environment).

Research seems to suggest that stress plays a role in the growth and spread of a cancer that is already present. Studies suggest an association between feeling helpless and suppressing negative emotions and the growth or spread of cancer.

In the last twenty years, a new scientic eld has opened up that explicitly investigates the link between psychological factors and the activity of the immune system. It is referred to as ‘psycho-neuro-immunology’. The three dimensions of this approach are psychology, neurology and immunology.

The psychological aspect refers to the stress felt in response to difcult life experiences or emotional pain. When people have the feeling that their life is no longer manageable or that it leads to more suffering than joy (the ‘psychological’ part).

The neurological response to this stress is the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones in turn activate the nervous system, accelerating the heart rate, raising blood pressure and tensing muscles so they will be prepared to make an effort or stave of an attack (the ‘neurological’ part). This neurological response stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and creates a ‘ght or ght’ response. The hormones that activate the neurological and visceral reexes of stress also act on immune cells.

White blood cells detect the presence of stress hormones and react according to uctuations in the levels of these hormones in the bloodstream. Some of these cells respond by releasing

inammatory cytokines and chemokines (the ‘immunology’ part). Natural killer cells are blocked by noradrenaline and cortisol, remaining passively glued to the walls of blood vessels rather than attacking viruses or abnormal precursor cancer cells. Thus, the immunity of a person is compromised to a large extent due to stress and thus potentially increases the risk of cancer.

We can all learn to cultivate our inner strength. Yoga teaches us that any individual may take over the reins of his or her inner being and bodily functioning. This can be achieved simply by concentrating the mind on focusing on the breath.

Mastery over controlling the breath is one of the best ways to reduce the impact of stress and to re-establish harmony in a person’s physiology and as a result, stimulate the body’s natural defenses. In yoga, the gateway to the inner self is Breathing.

Breathing is the only visceral function that is totally autonomous with regard to the conscious mind and yet easily regulated by the will. Changes in the rate and depth of breathing produce changes in the quantity and the kind of chemicals that are released from the brain and also from other parts of the human system. It is important to note that these chemicals affect the breath and that the breath affects the chemicals.

YOGA MD

Dr. P. B. Rajput

Introduction:

Loss of voice has become a common complaint found in the practice of ENT (Ear Nose Throat). Frequent sufferers are habitual overusers of voice such as lecturers, occupational hazards such as people working in unsuitable conditions where inhalation of irritating vapours and tobacco smoke are present. But occasionally, though not common, we nd an anaesthetist suffering from inhalation of ether as described below.

Case report:

A young man aged 35 years complained of hoarseness on and off for the last 8-10 months. He feels better when he goes on a holiday.

On examination:

The nose-throat-nasopharynx appeared within normal limits. An indirect laryngoscopy showed an inammation, both vocal cords with nodular appearance on both vocal cords, left more than right. There was no restriction of the movement of the vocal cords. Antibiotics including vitamins and steam inhalation were given for one month. He was advised to use a continuous mask in the operation theatre. The nodular appearance on the right vocal cords disappeared; the left vocal cord nodule persisted. On screening, the chest was found to be normal. Hence, the left vocal cord nodule was removed under general anaesthesia on direct laryngoscopy; the history of nodule was reported as ‘Agniobroma’

The symptoms persisted, so also the inamed appearance of both vocal cords. He was advised to rest for a month. He felt better but the symptoms again appeared on starting anaesthesia. The small nodule on right vocal cords appeared along with an inammation of both vocal cords. At this stage, he was advised to practice Yoga.

Yoga practice advised:

Sukhasana

Talasana

Konasana

Chakrasana

Yoga Mudra

Nispandabhava

Yonimudra

Kapalbhati

Pranayama 1

Pranayama 4

Savasana

Within three weeks, he started feeling better and his voice was coming back to normal though the inamed appearance of vocal cords persisted. It took two months to get back to the normal appearance of the vocal cords and the disappearance of the nodule on the right vocal cord.

Discussion:

These yoga practices were mainly concerned with circulation, relaxation, concentration and breathing exercises.

This case has been presented to show that allergic laryngitis (due to ether) not responding to our medical line of treatment was beneted through Yoga practices. In this particular case, I think it was mainly a tension of heavy work and partly an allergy to the anaesthetic drugs.

Laryngritis is quite common in professional lecturers and workers in factories who come in contact with chemical fumes. In the 21st century where there is a scarcity of jobs and an increase in unemployment, one would certainly not like to change the profession or occupation. For those people, Yoga practices can be of great help.

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH YOGA

Sometimes we meet someone who is all smiles and it would never occur to us that such a cheerful, jovial person has ever gone through hardships. But more often than not it is this hardship that has made the laugh lines all the more deeper and the laughter all the more hearty because it had to travel so far. One such person is our very own sadhaka Pradeep Iyangar , currently doing an internship with The Yoga Institute after completing his 3 Months Teacher Training Course in July. Yogasattva spoke with Pradeep about his unusual journey.

One thing that dened Pradeep’s life before stepping through the gates of The Yoga Institute earlier this year was work. Owning three restaurants, Pradeep came home at 4 in the morning, only to leave his house at 8 or 9 am again for another day of managing them. “I made do with 4 to 5 hours of sleep,” he says, smiling. Because he was used to working and standing on his own two feet from the age of 9 when he was just in 5th standard.

His maternal grandmother, who raised Pradeep from birth because his parents separated even before that, instilled in him that he should earn money and take care of himself, so that is what he did. “I started with delivering newspapers, then milk. Then I got interested in sports, cricket and football, and got paid for every match I played,” recounts Pradeep.

After more odd jobs, he took an interest in vintage bikes and opened his own garage from savings when he had just nished school. He also became a real estate agent and worked in a restaurant for four years, working his way up from cleaning the dishes to learning everything about the restaurant trade. Soon after, he opened his rst own restaurant at the age of 23.

Needless to say, this is when life became even more hectic - the restaurant took on a

delivery service and catered food to weddings and parties as well. Somewhere in all that, he opened two more restaurants in partnerships and got married as well. Life in the fast (food) lane had also brought Pradeep news about a place called The Yoga Institute and the wish emerged in 2016 to do a TTC. However, at the time, it was not possible. In 2019, when due to family pressures Pradeep had to shift himself and his grandmother to a new location and lay low for a while, he took the opportunity to leave it all and to enroll himself for the 3 Months TTC.

He did a residential course and enjoyed the calm and peaceful atmosphere at the Institute immensely. “Before I walked through the Institute’s gate, I would have never believed that a place like that exists right in the middle of Mumbai,” he says. He also left all

his negative energy outside the gate and hasn’t looked back since. “You just talk with people and you get so much knowledge by doing that and it has beneted me a lot,” he says, adding that he now feels genuinely friendly towards one and all instead of being friendly to selected people because he was in a profession that demanded it.

Pradeep also learned how to handle negative emotions - feeling depressed, burned out, low. It happened once during his TTC and he remembered Ramendra Sir’s words to simply stand in sthitaprarthanasana when that happened. He heeded his teacher’s advice and after one and a half hours in the posture, he felt better, relaxed.

Pradeep also experienced vairagya rsthand when he not only let go of his restaurants and the lifestyle that came with it but also of emotions like resentment, anger and frustration. After being estranged from his parents and keeping his distance for so long, he has reached a turning point and is accepting his karma. He is now ready to meet his mother who will stay with him soon.

The changes are apparent, not only to Pradeep but to those around him as well. “Where it was ‘work, work, work’ before, now it is ‘yoga, yoga, yoga’,“ he says. He has started teaching yoga to the children in his colony and has more time for his wife and relatives. Time has become more valuable than money and he feels lucky to be at TYI, recounting especially Hansaji’s practical advice fondly.

Pradeep has also learned not to worry about what other people will think about him and to do the things that make him happy, keeping his grandmother’s example of the lotus in mind: “A lotus is so grounded, even if it is up on the water level, the roots are deep down, grounded. You have to be like that - down to earth, but also humble. Don’t let your ego take over,” he remembers her words.

From the TTC until now, he has learned to do his practice with complete awareness and alignment, keeping the bhavas in mind. Instead of money and hard work, it is now yoga and the heart that he follows and this is what Maharishi Patanjali had in mind in Sutra 2.47 - prayatna shaihtilya ananta samapattibhyam - we have to put effort but effort alone will not bring us forward, we have to relax that effort also and let go of all that is hindering us.

“Be happy and make others happy. Just be yourself, don’t worry about what other people think. You know your duty; leave the rest to the higher reality,” says Pradeep.

YOGIC INSIGHTS

Yoga GelsWith LifeDr. Jayadeva Yogendra,Former President, The Yoga Institute.

It was customary in olden times for a teacher to warn the errant student in the class thus: if the student does not sit straight looking at his books he will nd his pig tail or tuft of hair on the head tied to the ceiling.

We all are on the lookout for harsher measures to handle ourselves yet we remain unpunctual, have no sense of time, cannot remain steady in one position, slouch and become sleepy, remain perpetually confused and tense, or jumpy, lack self-control etc. we are plagued by these vicious traits all throughout our life. Half hearted attempts to be punctual, to be disciplined, to exert control on oneself go on but with little success.

If yoga was properly practiced, it contains all the measures that can help us to build a beautiful life. There is a story of king Janak who remained unidentied with his Kingdom and did not panic even when courtiers ran in to inform him that Mithila, their capital city was on re. He realized that such things will go on happening and the usual way of handling

such Situations remained valid. His getting panicky, losing his balanced state of mind, would not help.

A saint leaves his house every morning to pray. He keeps the door ajar and does not look behind because he has mentally and physically left the place. But with us our anxiety about our bank account is constant. Our moods keep swimming with the bank balance, our property, the behavior of our near and dear ones etc. There are many deep-seated traits that trouble us constantly and give us no peace and respite.

If we were learning our yoga more meaningfully we should learn how to switch off our thoughts and emotions when necessary. Sitting straight, getting inward, concentrating etc. are traits that have to be deepened to face life situations more completely. A true student of yoga has trained his mind in such a manner that he is able to face up to situations that happen around him.

YOUTH AND MENTAL PROBLEMSby Shri Yogendraji

outh is biologically a product of parentage and the

Yenvironment of the society in which he lives.

The youth of today psychologically represents the memory-potentials (sams-kara) of the civilization or culture and the social impact of presents of today. The man of the past is not the same today: he has gone through many changes in all aspects of his life-physical, mental, moral, intellectual and spiritual.

The early age of childhood is the most sensitive period and the child suffers, if extreme changes take place in the society during that period. Hence, beforeblaming the youth for wrongs, the parents should ask themselves what really is at fault. The parents often do not want to take the initiative, but make the childrendo something as they like, and later blame them for their own lapses.

This blaming the children is merely an alibi, and therefore useless. In the olden days, the youth was expected to live with his teacher in an asrama so as to free himself from temporal changes and the student used to see everything, what is truly just and good. So when he attained the age of 21, he remained unaffected by what was wrong or unjust in society. Whereas now-a-days the youth is pushed into the forefront as a buffer, by evil designs of religionists, politicians, and other social elements. They usually fall into the trap laid for the innocent and credulous youth. The youth is thus kept ignorant of the real motive behind, and is otherwise exploited by the people who want something for themselves.

In ancient Greece, everyone wanted to be strong and so the youth was more interested in athletics, with an eye for conquest for the powers that be. In ancient India, the people with good principles were admired and the youth opted for virtue rather than money of power. The youth of today, however is the reection of the society of today which is after wealth and power. The youth will have to be improved not by sermons from pulpits but by changing the very ideals of the whole society, which is only concerned with material progress. Today everyone wants money, even the parents expect this from their progeny. The youth is thus conditioned to achieve success in material life because of its big

propaganda value in all other elds of life.

So he follows the path of his parents and the society automatically, and the misdirection which started at the beginning of amassing for oneself all wealth and power (laksmi and sakti) still has a strong appeal to the youth. All that a youth is made to understand in modern life is somehow to earn money and gain power.

He is seldom interested in order things like virtue and spirituality. Thus, without transforming the pattern of modern civilization, we would not be able to bring about the high level of idealism for youth.

As stated before, the mental health of the youth depends upon his parents, his society and the culture he inherits. Today’s youth is distracted and partly disintegrated, because of the above three inuences i.e. the permissive culture, society and parents. He requires proper guidance and models to inspire him, but the moral status of the society around him is so evil that he just cannot hope for inspiration from any quarter.

Even the most pious looking men of today, after praying to one God, if they do not get any success, start praying to another. How can we expect or blame the youth for having unsteady, unprincipled and opportunist mental structure?

The best thing is that the youth be sent away from such vicious environment to a more humane institution of total education where he learns moral teachings by example offered to him by his teachers and co-students before accepting values of life implanted by mechanical education. If the moral educational system continues as today, how can we blame the youth for what he is; why not rather blame his parents, his civilization, his culture and his society for most of his mental roblem?

Where should one begin to correct the youth h or correct all the sources of his mental ill health? The fact is that many do not really want to understand this problem of modern youth and his mental health because they have to share the greater part of the blame and burden.

GREEN YOGASPHERE

Breathing fresh air is an antidote to many health problems, says Yoga. However rapid industrialisation and reduction of greenery has choked the lungs of our cities. Mother Nature as always comes to our rescue. NASA Clean Air Study has identied certain plants, which can clean airborne toxins, dust and germs.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

Here are tiny soldiers who help us by warding of toxins like Carbon Monoxide, Formaldehyde, Benzene, trichloroethylene and many mores as found in varnishes, oor nishes, detergents and cleaners.

1. Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis): This healing plant soothes kitchen burns and puries the airof formaldehyde and benzene.

2. Tulsi, Holy Basil (Ocimum Tenuiorum): This aromatic medicinal plant cleans air of xylene and produces oxygen even at night.

3. Areca Palm (Chrysalidocarpus Lutescens): A powerhouse for eliminating toxins. It also helps in creating humidication in dry places and AC environment.

4. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum Comosum): This hardy plant removes carbon monoxide andxylene, requires less care and is perfect for gardening newbies

5. Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea Seifrizii): These toxin ghters are humidity guzzlers too.Perfect for humid areas like kitchens and bathrooms

6. Snake Plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata): Easy to grow, this removes toxins and releasesoxygen at night, making it a great addition for bedrooms

7. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum): Undemanding plants that add beauty with white or red owers. These are toxic to pets and kids, so plant accordingly.

Let us add serenity, beauty and vitality to our homes, ofces, factories and retail outlets. Choose one or many from this list. It is recommended to have ~ 2 to 3 medium plants per 500 Sq. Ft. of space for effective ltering of air. Found in abundance at The Yoga Institute, you can visit the campus to experience the bliss of nature. TESTIMONIAL

I’m amazed by the activities and the work of the Institute. I would convey to all yoga practitioners to continue working in this direction for overall progress of humanity and further for world peace. The Yoga Institute is doing a great job in Mumbai city and around the globe.

GIANI ZAIL SINGHFormer President of India

I joined in 2007 as a 7-Days camper and completed my 7 months TTC in 2008. After nishing, I got an opportunity to teach at TYI Mumbai and did that for 6 years. I was very lucky to do the research work with Dr. Shetty and Sharad Shah. I have been a part of the Institute as an asana teacher for the 3 Months TTC. I am very fortunate to have found gurus like Dr. Jayadeva and Dr. Hansaji. As Hansaji would say, Doctor sahab is a sutra and she is the bhashya. Her practical approach has changed my entire life. I want to express my gratitude for all the teachings that I have received from the Institute. I will continue to give my best in learning as well as teaching as long as I can.

TESTIMONIAL

Set in a pleasant, leafy retreat amongst the hustle and bustle of Mumbai, The Yoga Institute is a unique place to learn. Lectures covering a wide range of yogic subjects are given by knowledgeable and passionate teachers, and the community of students is welcoming and enthusiastic. I found my experience at TYI helped me further my own personal development as well as provide me with a thorough grounding for entering the world of yoga instruction. I'm looking forward to my return, and will hopefully get a chance to learn at one of the other many TYIs around the world.

MUIREANN LEVISStudent From Ireland

In the current world where mostly everything is fake and eeting, nding anything genuine is almost impossible. What all have I seen in the name of yoga? Only when I landed up at The Yoga Institute, I experienced authentic

Yoga. The Yoga Institute is not just the oldest Yoga centre in the world but also an abode for traditional teachings. The school accommodates an array

of yogic students from around the world. The Institute has been certifying Yoga-trained teachers for over 100 years with a varied range of yogic

courses. I am one of the proud aspirants of the Institute. My life has dramatically changed only for better. Atha Yogānushāsanam! Now my

journey begins.

SHILPA GMSadhaka

The yoga institute is a beautiful coming together of wisdom, knowledge, love and kindness. Situated in the busy city of Mumbai, it offers peace and nourishment. There is much more to yoga than Asanas and the path for human spiritual growth is seen and felt here, in thought, action and word. Thank you for the opportunity to learn and to receive all that you so generously give. As Idries Shah said, “If you want to make an ordinary man happy, or think that he is happy, give him money, power, attery, gifts, honours. If you want to make a wise man happy - improve yourself." That is the gift I promise in return for all the love and learning. Thank you. In gratitude. Namaste.

FOUNDER, SHRI YOGENDRAJI

YOGASATTVAMONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE, INDIAOLDEST ORGANISED YOGA CENTRE IN THE WORLD

SEPTEMBER 2019 ISSUE

“The length of life is not soimportant as quality of life”

Shri Yogendraji - Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance

For a society or a country to be well governed, a certain discipline and self-control become necessary. Allowing each to live as he likes is sure to lead to chaos as the interests of individuals are likely to conict. What will follow is violence and untruth - both synonymous in Yoga. If suffering has been the lot of mankind even after centuries of civilization and culture, it speaks ill of the society and the world that did not benet from these. Have we ever thought why our civilization and culture – with all their promises and traditions of religion, science, philosophy, sociology, economics, politics and what else there is – have so far failed to give a positive shape to a normal human society where everyone can live in peace, can enjoy happiness and be free? We hardly realize that this is due to the bane of a permissive society, which is not the product of today as some think, but is an evil that made inroads, though in small measure, right from the beginning of our civilization and culture. For example, the divine rights of royalty and the might and main of a privileged class had scant respect for self-control and discipline but let their behavior patterns be governed by their attitude.
