The symbol is the work of Fr Marko I. Rupnik, and is the common official symbol for the whole world. Here today I would like to offer an explanation of the symbol as it was described by Archbishop Salvatore Fisichella, President, Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelisation. He says..... The symbol represents a full theology of the theme of mercy and the motto which accompanies it. The motto “Merciful Like the Father” (Luke 6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn, but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure. “It is an image quite important to the early Church: that of the Son having taken upon His shoulders the lost soul, demonstrating that it is Christ's love that brings to completion the mystery of His incarnation culminating in redemption. The logo has been designed in such a way so as to express the profound way in which the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with a love that has the power to change one’s life. “One particular feature worthy of note is that while the Good Shepherd, in His great mercy, takes humanity upon Himself, His eyes are merged with those of man. Christ sees with the eyes of Adam, and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Every person discovers in Christ, the new Adam, his or her own humanity and the future that lies ahead. “The scene is enclosed in a mandorla, an element typical of ancient and medieval iconography. that recalls the coexistence of the two natures, divine and human, in Christ. The three concentric ovals, with colours progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of Christ Who carries humanity out of the darkness of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the darker colour suggests the impenetrability of the love of the Father Who forgives all. The symbol attached to the Door of Mercy, along with the banners in the Cathedral, will remain in place for the whole of the Year of Mercy. We will be changing the coloured banners in the Cathedral to coincide with the liturgical seasons of the Church’s Year. As we meditate on the meaning of the symbol through this year, may we be blessed with the joy of God’s mercy, and find ways to extend this mercy to others. Peccávimus, et fácti súmus tamquam immúndus nos, et cecídimus quasi fólium univérsi: et iniquitátes nóstræ quasi véntus abstulérunt nos: abscondísti faciem túam a nóbis, et allisísti nos in mánu iniquitátis nóstræ.

We have sinned, and are as an unclean thing, and we all do fade as a leaf: and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away; thou hast hid thy face from us: and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

COMMUNION HYMN JUBILEE HYMN

Only your Son can teach us how Your Kingdom can transform A cornered heart: come Lord, come now, Come make a calm in storm. Come Lord, come now, Come make a calm in storm.

Only your Spirit can ignite Each heart with loving fire; Come Spirit: grant an inner light Yet make us all a choir. Grant inner light Yet make us all a choir.

THE ADVENT PROSE PLAINSONG

ORDER OF MASS

PROCESSIONAL HYMN WINCHESTER NEW

The Solemn Mass is sung by the Cathedral Choir.

KYRIE

At the Solemn Mass, the Cathedral Choir sing Missa Brevis in C ‘Spatzenmesse’ K.220 MOZART

On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry announces that the Lord is nigh; awake and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings. Then cleansed be every breast from sin; make straight the way for God within, prepare we in our hearts a home where such a mighty Guest may come. For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without thy grace we waste away like flowers that wither and decay. To heal the sick stretch out thine hand, and bid the fallen sinner stand; shine forth and let thy light restore earth's own true loveliness once more. All praise, eternal Son, to thee, whose advent doth thy people free; whom with the Father we adore

and Holy Ghost for evermore.

DISMISSAL RITE At the 10:00am Solemn Mass

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

OFFERTORY MOTET GIBBONS

SANCTUS

This is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed and denied not, and said plainly, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What art thou then? Art thou Elias? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, What art thou? that we may give an answer unto them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? And he said, I am the voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord.

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION

COMMUNION MOTET WOOD

AGNUS DEI

O Thou, the central orb of righteous love, Pure beam of the most High, eternal Light of this our wintry world, Thy radiance bright awakes new joy in faith, hope soars above. Come, quickly come, and let thy glory shine, gilding our darksome heaven with rays Divine. Thy saints with holy lustre round Thee move, as stars about thy throne, set in the height of God's ordaining counsel, as Thy sight gives measured grace to each, Thy power to prove. Let Thy bright beams disperse the gloom of sin, Our nature all shall feel eternal day in fellowship with thee, transforming clay to souls erewhile unclean, now pure within. Amen.
