GREAT ALTERNATIVEEvery August, the biggest names in comedy head to Edinburgh for the month-long Fringe, leaving the rest of the UK in desperate need of a comedy fix come September.

That’s set to change this summer thanks to The Newcastle Alternative, a series of more than 150 performances over 34 days at The Stand, showcasing the very best that the Fringe has to offer without the 250-mile round trip.

Big names including Stewart Lee and Dylan Moran will be testing new material, as will Josie Long and Phill Jupitus. The Stand, www.thestand.co.uk

I’m visiting with a friend and love Newcastle. We’ve just been to Baltic, which was wonderful. Our favourite there was

the exhibition by Lorna Simpson. Every city should have a Baltic!

SHARON HEWITT, 54 RETAIL ASSISTANT, NEWCASTLE

On Sundays we always go to the Quayside Market. My husband used to go with his Dad when he was young and now

we’re taking our grandchildren. There’s always a good mix of stalls and interesting sights and we love the NE1 Quayside Seaside.

BETH JONES, 18 ADMINISTRATOR, RYTON

I love trawling through the vintage shops and stalls. The Britain Does Vintage Fair at the Theatre Royal is amazing, and filled

with stalls. I love collecting jewellery.

Ping pong, whif whaf, flim flam - whatever you call it, now’s the time to pick up your paddles and play for free at NE1’s new outdoor tables across Newcastle city centre.

The seven tables are at Northumberland Street, Princess Square next to Newcastle Central library, Trinity Gardens, and the Quayside next to the Pitcher and Piano, and all you need to play is your own bat and ball (available at Poundland, Clayton Street; Sports Direct, Blackett Street; and Argos, intu Eldon Square). We feel a summer craze coming on! Who knew?• Table tennis is the most popular racquet sport in

the world with more than 10m players competing in tournaments every year

• Table tennis became an Olympic Sport in the 1998 Olympics in Seoul

• Table tennis was banned in the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1950 because the authorities believed it was harmful to the eyes

• China, Sweden and South Korea are currently the world leaders in the sport

I’VE BEEN TO… THE HANCOCK

MUSEUM

What’s the first thing that pops into your head when you think of a first date?

A trip to the pictures? A romantic meal? A stroll along the beach? All of them are pretty safe options.

Few people necessarily think of the Hancock Museum as the ‘ideal’ place for a first date - but we did.

So off we went to find out about mummies from Ancient Egypt, and see a life-size replica of a T-Rex. The big attraction for us was the Planetarium, and after a quick chat with the staff at the museum shop (who were extremely helpful and enthusiastic) we chose Sea Monsters - A Prehistoric Adventure. We were completely immersed in a captivating adventure about ancient sea creatures and also got to see a selection of live animals including wolf fish and lizards, which added to the whole experience.

I’d recommend a day out to the Hancock Museum to everyone, there’s so much to do at such a low cost - you can’t pass up on this offer of entertainment and education.

As for the date, well, it couldn’t have gone better…

DON’T HYDE FROM THE BEASTDrummers-turned-songwriting duo Hyde & Beast return to The Cluny 2 to showcase their second studio album Keep Moving, which is set for release later this summer. The duo, Futureheads drummer-turned-frontman Dave Hyde and ex-Golden Virgins drummer-turned-producer Neil Bassett, teamed up for debut album Slow Down in 2011 after discovering a shared love of obscure 60s and 70s bands and Ethiopian soul, among other things. They’ll be at the Cluny 2 complete with a nine-piece band ahead of a string of festival appearances. The Cluny 2, July 24, £3, www.thecluny.com

SOFA, SO GOODAfter covering weighty issues like death, love, religion and spam javelins, Richard Herring returns with his new show Lord of the Dance Settee, to explore daftness, being uncool and bouncing joyously on the sofa.

The Yorkshire comic rose to fame in the 90s as one half of Lee and Herring alongside Stewart Lee. A regular on radio, Herring has worked with Al Murray (Time Gentlemen Please) and contributed to the third series of Matt Lucas and David Walliams’ Little Britain.

AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson has been back in Toon to pick up an honorary doctorate in music at Northumbria Uni, where he admitted that the prospect of making his speech there was more daunting than taking part in the Le Mans classic car race.

“It was 1am, the rain was pouring down and I was driving a Porsche at 175mph around one of the most terrifying circuits in the world, but all I could think about was what I could and should say to everyone at Northumbria,” said 66-year-old Johnson. “It’s such a big day for everyone and all the students here have a long road ahead. Enjoy the ride!”

DID YOU KNOW? • Dunston-born Johnson had chart success with Geordie in the 1970s • He joined AC/DC in 1980 and his first album with the group, Back in Black, is one of the biggest of all time• AC/DC have sold more than 200m albums worldwide• Their most recent tour, Black Ice, is estimated to be the fourth highest grossing concert tour of all time

Without doubt one of the oddest balls on the circuit, Ross Noble is coming home to Newcastle with his new show later this year.

Noble plays five nights at City Hall as part of his Tangentleman tour, and you can bet every night will be completely different as he wanders off on a serious of bizarre tangents as he showcases his improv skills – taking comments from the audience and weaving elaborate tales of nonsense.

BIG EAT

Newcastle’s food scene is so vibrant that it now rivals the big food cities of Europe and it’s buzzing right now.

The population is rich with cultural diversity and that’s reflected in the city’s cuisine. Within five minutes’ walk in any direction of Grey’s Monument you can be dining on food influenced by Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Enjoy Asian at Osaka or European at Blackfriars, Latin at Las Iguanas and Indian street food at Dabbawal. Look at the variety on offer during NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week and you’ll see that the proof is in the starters, the mains and the pudding!

We’ve also got some great new independent restaurants, notably Kenny Atkinson’s House of Tides, The Bridge Tavern, and Fat Hippo Underground, alongside premium chains including Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse & Grill, Jamie’s Italian, Café Rouge, and Browns Brasserie.

One trend that outshines the rest right now is for sharing food, which perfectly suits the friendliness of the people of Newcastle and is present in the Asian tapas at Electric East, the big Sharing Pie at Broad Chare, and Afternoon Tea at Café Royal.

It seems Newcastle is a place of extremely good taste! Paul blogs at: tasteofthenorth.me
