AGENDA: Famous Women Freedom Fighters

• India attained freedom on 15th August 1947 after more than a decade of freedom struggle by thousands of patriotic leaders

• In this lesson, we are going to read about the contributions of a number of dedicated women freedom fighters

Pritilata Waddedar (5 May 1911 – 23 September 1932)

• A Bengali revolutionary nationalist.

• Participated in Chittagong armoury raid on 18 April 1930 to raid the armoury of police and auxiliary forces from the Chittagong armoury

• Brave Pritilata (dressed as Punjabi male) led a 15 man team of revolutionaries in a 1932 attack on the Pahartali European Club in Chittagong, which had a sign board that read "Dogs and Indians not allowed”.

• A trust named Birkannya Pritilata Trust (Brave lady Pritilata Trust) has been founded in her memory

• Consumed Cyanide to avoid death and insult from British

Aruna Asif Ali (July 16, 1909 – July 29, 1996)

• On August 8, 1942, the All India Congress Committee passed the Quit India resolution in Bombay session.

• The government arrested all the major leaders to stop the movement.

• A young Aruna proudly unfurled (hoist) the Indian tricolor flag in a heavily cordoned off (guarded) at the Gowalia Tank maidan and shouted “British, Quit India” slogans.

• Aruna was dubbed the Heroine of the 1942 movement

• Her efforts resulted in an improvement of conditions in the Tihar Jail but she was moved to solitary confinement in Ambala

Role of Desais of Jainapur (Bijapur District)

• Desais of Jainapur was an aristocratic family (rich from several generation)

• Kashibai was from Wealthy and generous family, who owned Rolls Royce (imported car – a symbol of status)

• When the District Collector of Bijapur asked her car for the use of his higher officer. She refused to give her car and told him that she would use it for drying cow dung cakes.

• That made him angry and he cancelled it's registration.

• Then she stuck to her word (struck cow dung cakes – even after India got freedom)

Shakuntala Dhamankar

• Shakuntala Dhamankar, a twenty year old lady of Belgaum, was the leader of the college students who abandoned (left) school to join freedom struggle.

• Her mercurial agility (move or think quickly) inspired young folks to agitate (fight) against the British rule.

• The police could not arrest Shakuntala, as she lived in underground. • She worked with Shankar Kurtakoti on whose head there was a reward of

Rs.2000/- and married him. • She said that she would proud to be the wife of imprisoned freedom

fighter and prouder to be the widow of the freedom fighter

Padmavatibai Burli

• Padmavatibai was a silent and pious (religious) lady• She was wife of great freedom fighter Bindacharya Burli. Her

family struggled to earn two square meals per day. She used to tell her own children to eat a little less so that they could be fed the freedom fighters

• This was her silent protest against the British • Once she was arrested while serving to Shakuntala Dabade

and Shantabai Karmarkar and served 3 months imprisonment

Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya (3 April 1903 – 29 October 1988)

• Kamaladevi became an active organizer of the women and youth wing of the Indian National Congress

• A great poet and artist who inspired thousands of Indian women

• After freedom in 1947, Kamaladevi helped refugees by establishing co-operative societies and self-employment schemes.

• As chief of the Board of Handicrafts, she started the pension system for the craftsmen and revived traditional Indian home industries like weaving, and handicrafts

• She was the vision behind National School of Drama, Sangeet Natak Akademi, Central Cottage Industries Emporium, and the Crafts Council of India.

Sarojini Naidu

• Sarojini was a child prodigy (talented) and was a great poet. Titled as 'the Nightingale of India'

• Dedicated disciple (follower )of Gandhiji, who translated his philosophy of non-violence into reality

• 1st women to become President of Indian Congress• Participated in Quit India Movement and Civil

Disobedience Movement• Her work:

– The Golden Threshold– The Feather of the Dawn– The Broken Wing: Songs of Love, Death and the Spring,

including "The Gift of India"

Capt. Laxmi Swaminathan(24 October 1914 – 23 July 2012)

• She is a MBBS doctor by profession. • In 1940 she left to Singapore, where she met the

members of Netaji’s Indian National Army. She established a clinic for the immigrant labor and poor people from India.

• In the surrender of Singapore by British to Japanese, she aided wounded prisoner of war

• Under Netaji’s vision- Dr. Lakshmi Swaminathan headed all-women brigade (Rani Jhani Regiment) to march to Burma and she became Captain Lakshmi, a name that struck with her.

• She was a revolutionist of the Indian independence movement, an officer of the Indian National Army, and the Minister of Women's Affairs in the Azad Hind government.

Other Women Fighters

• On 6th Sept 1942, Vimala Gulwadi and Hema Shilnolikar, entered the court hall and dared to command the judge to go back. They shouted slogans against British which inspired one of the Indian police to quit his job.
