The Witches’ Wail December 2005 VOLUME 05, ISSUE 10 SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA - WICHITA REGION RE-REPEAT – Dave Geis If you didn’t make it to the 2005 MidWest Division Convention, you missed a good one. No, you missed a fantastic one! Shock seminars, car prep seminars, off-site car prep, Solo site acquisition, risk management – I could go on and on. The only complaint I heard was that there was so much going on all the time that it was hard to choose which seminar to go to. I feel sorry for the Region that hosts it for the next few years. Charlene and her crew did a great job and will be a hard act to follow! Not to mention the Solo on the Sunday following the Convention. Brian Meyer followed his own instructions from his course design seminar and put on a great event at Raytheon. 28 people who attended the convention came and ran their “free” Solo and had even more fun. See elsewhere in this edition of the Wail for the results of the Convention Solo. (RE-Repeat cont from page 1) Not only will there be the usual somewhat white elephant gift exchange, free munchies, and hear what people have planned what they have in store for their cars for next year, you’ll also be able to find out the result of the elections for the 2006 Officers for the Region. You did vote, didn’t you? Elsewhere in the Wail, you can also find information on our annual Awards Banquet. Send in your reservations early for this great event! I have to apologize for this article not being up to usual standards. Not only is the race car put away for the winter, it actually snowed this morning and it’s got me really depressed. No more playing with cars until the IROC later this winter . Maybe I’ll keep the tapes from the Runoffs playing all the time so there’ll be something to do . Are we havin’ fun yet?

2005 Mid-Am Championship By Dave Geis The final results are in for the Mid-Am Championships! Congratulations go to all who competed in the series. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Series, 176 drivers signed up to compete against their peers in the MidWest Division. To qualify for the Championship, drivers must earn points in at least four races at a minimum of two different tracks, earn less than 36 National racing points, and did not participate in the Runoffs. Well, they can crew, work or whatever at the Runoffs – they just can’t drive . So here are the results of the Wichita region drivers that partipated in the Series. If you see a “dnq -did not qualify” next to their name, you’ll know that they had car breakage during the year, ran out of funds, or entered too late in the year to get in enough races. Unfortunately, it looks like a lot of our drivers had some really bad luck.

Over the years, the Wichita Region has had quite a few Champions. If you’ve been around the Region for a while, see if any of these names and cars sound familiar.

2005 Witches Ryde by Keith Pfautz Well, rally season is over and I’m going to look back as well as forward, since Judi and I will be rally chairs again next year. I was not satisfied with the Witches’ Ryde Rallye this year. For several reasons, point totals were too high. (See the accompanying results.) The state highway department completed a bridge project and eliminated a transit zone without my permission. (Last year on the Afton rally, they started a bridge project, also without my permission.) There was an intersection problem that neither Bruce nor I saw. And one leg was just plain too long. I’m planning next years Ryde with an eye on improvements. The other thing I want to recommend is a mini-rally school to be put on prior to rallies (probably three TSDs , the poker rally and maybe something else next year). We got a lot of new people at the Ryde this year without a plan for teaching them what they needed to know. Next year, registration will open 90 minutes prior to the first car going out, close 30 minutes prior and an information time will be allotted to help new people. I know Bruce is planning the Road Dog and well as fine tuning the Midwest Regional rally series, which should be really fun next year with more events. 1 – # 11 BRANDON AND ASHLEY THOMPSON 285 POINTS OVERLAND PARK, KS 2 - # 4 ROBIN AND GARRY DEATON 468 POINTS TULSA, OK 3 - #9 CURT AND LINDA JURGENSON 568 POINTS VALLEY CENTER, KS 4 - #12 KENDALL AND DANA CLARK 608 POINTS WICHITA, KS 5 - #5 DAVID AND MARY BIRD-GUILLIAMS 627 POINTS WICHITA, KS 6 - #7 GARY BLESSING AND AUDREY BARBA 669 POINTS WICHITA, KS 7 - #8 CHRIS AND PAUL GUITERREZ 720 POINTS WICHITA, KS 8TIE - #10 JASON AND TONIA PEACOCK 728 POINTS BARTLESVILLE, OK 8TIE - #2 WARREN MEYER AND STAN SMITH 728 POINTS WICHITA AND HAYSVILLE, KS 10 - # 3 ROBERT AND LAURA FOSTER 752 POINTS WICHITA, KS

Well, another Solo season is behind us. We wrapped up the 2005 year at Raytheon with our MidDiv Convention Solo. Brian Meyer laid out the course and basically assumed the role of event chair (Thanks Brian). The weather was pretty nice and 70 drivers came out to play. There were lots of close battles in several different classes. In AS, Dave Gird managed to pull out a victory over Jim French and Mark Hill. These 3 drivers were separated by 4 tenths of a second. Hal Larcher squeaked by Chris Lawrie in Street Open by .096 seconds. Local Tim Harmon showed out-of-towner Jan Gerber how to run Street Touring S by 3 tenths. Dennis Smith pulled out a victory in Street Touring X over Marcus Hidvegi by about 3 tenths. And top honors go to Mike Dickerson in Street Touring 2 for borrowing Kevin Anderson’s Miata and then beating him by 1 full second in it. Way to go Mike! Not too many other competitive organizations can you see someone lend their car to someone else and risk getting beat by their own car. Cheers Kevin! Looking ahead for 2006 it looks like we will have 10 local events. Dates are still being hammered out so stay tuned. Our site selection is poor at best, but with some luck we’ll be back at our old Boeing (now Spirit) site for 2006. Also, the event point structure is under review. Expect to see a change in how we keep points for 2006 Solos. More on that later. And last but not least, I’d like to welcome David Guilliums (that’s French for Williams) to the ranks of Solo co-chair. He’s willingly agreed; at least I think it was willingly, to step up and help provide some leadership for the Wichita Solo program. Thanks Dave!

Solo Pre-registration Rules for 2006. By David Guilliams To rap up the pre-registration for the 2005 Solo season, I examined the statistics for the season. This lead me to determine that the rules for pre-registration need to be tweaked to facilitate the smooth running of the events. First let’s look at the numbers. For the 2005 season, 214 drivers competed at our events. These drivers combined for a total of 605 entrants at the events. However, there were a total of 92 additional entries that pre-registered but did not show for the event. A total of 61 different drivers had at least one instance where they pre-registered for an event and then did not run at the event. This is over 28% of the drivers that had at least one no show. The disturbing part of the numbers is that almost half of the no shows were caused by individuals who had asked for and been assigned permanent numbers. No shows cause a problem for everyone at the event by filling slots that could be taken by drivers who are at the event. This causes the heats to be unbalanced and has caused the event chair to have to scramble to fill the necessary worker slots for the heats. In order to try to alleviate this problem for the 2006 season the following procedures for pre-registration will be put in place.

1. To make sure that all of the people who have assigned numbers still want them, all people who currently have a permanent number have until February 15 to send an e-mail to [email protected].

2. After February 1, all others will be able to request any of the permanent numbers that have not been

assigned on a first come basis.

3. Starting in the 2006 season, any individual who has a permanent number shall be expected to contact the pre-registrar or the event chair, if they are unable to attend an event in order that their number can be reassigned.

4. Any individual who fails to notify the registration of their being unable to attend an event two events in

a row or three events over the course of the season will lose their permanent number.

5. Any individual who pre-registers and then fails to attend three events in a row or four over the course of the season without notifying registration will not be allowed to pre-register for the remainder of the season.

These rules may seem a little harsh but they would have only affected 5 drivers in 2005, all of who had permanent numbers. Pre-registration really helps on-site registration run smoother and allows drivers to select which heat they wish to compete in. By tweaking these procedures, we can continue to make the events run smoother for all involved.

October 23 Solo at Strother Field By Greg Laws Many thanks to all that helped make today's Strother Solo a success! It was definitely a team effort with everyone helping out whenever they saw something that needed doing. It all went like clockwork. Special thanks to:

Bruce Bettinger for hauling the trailer from Derby to the event. Scott Bettinger who awoke to discover that Bruce had borrowed his truck! Dave & Lou Geis for doing everything that needed doing all day even though it was too cold to run their FM Vee. Mike Herrick also for being there and jumping in although his race car wasn't there. Dan Deener for being the first one there (after me) because 07:25 was COLD, WINDY, and DARK. Robert was the Solo Safety Steward and did an exemplary job. The nice Sheriff's Deputy who pulled in at 07:05 and DIDN'T chase me off.

The DARK went away but the COLD and WINDY stuck around. It was just starting to get nice when we closed up shop at 2:30 PM and went to Captain Tony's. I was disappointed by the low turnout there but those of us attending had excellent food and a good time. At Capt. Tony's I met a newbie named Matt George. He owns one of those quick little Subaru WRX cars and he said that he's intending to join the Wichita Region when he comes to the MiDiv Convention. Outstanding!

MIDIV CONVENTION 2005 By Charlene Bettinger Ok, now Midiv Convention 2005 hosted by Wichita Region is over and I feel it was a huge success. We had 136 people attend the convention in various capacity such as full convention goer, seminars only, banquet only, etc. This attendance is up from past years Midiv Convention. We, the Wichita Region, tried something a little different for convention this year. We tried to focus the convention on YOU with emphasis on Solo II. We had learning seminars as well as the regular seminars that are usually present at convention. We were lucky enough to get Lee Grimes from Koni to come in and give a seminar on shocks and he also resided in the hospitality room all day Saturday to talk to anyone interested in talking to him, but could not make the seminar. Lee went one step further and went to the solo site Sunday and talked to people about shocks there. I even saw him crawling under cars to check on shocks. He was a great benefit to our convention. Ralph Compton from B G Products did a seminar for us on lubrication for cars. He, also, was in the hospitality room most of Saturday. Our tire seminar fell through at the last minute; but we still had a tire box at the Solo on Sunday for anyone who wanted to take advantage of it. Duck Waddle and Steve Fenske came in and did a seminar on Race Car Prep and Duck also did a seminar on how to drive a race car and solo car. (Duck is a Skip Barber School instructor) Duck, too, went to the solo on Sunday for anyone who wanted to avail themselves of his expertise. Dave Wentworth from Solo Performance, gave an off site seminar on Solo II car prep with Scott Bettinger from Don Preston Racing bringing scales and scaling cars as part of the seminar. Don Preston Racing allowed Scott to take the scales to the off site location and use them for the seminar. We had a class on Solo II Safety Instructors given by Mike Dickerson and Dave Wentworth, Sue Waddle gave a Race Crew School titled “The Care and Feeding of Race Drivers”, Bruce Bettinger gave a Rally Seminar wherein they discussed the Midiv Rally Series among other items. We had the usual Race seminars and, of course, the Exec Committee meeting. All full convention goers had a free solo on Sunday. There were 28 people who took advantage of this. Solo was at Raytheon. As you can see, there was a lot to do at Convention this year. We heard several comments that people liked the format we used and they wanted to see more conventions using this format. They said it made the convention fun and a learning experience. Finally, we had a banquet with awards, key note speaker and again a lot of fun. Our convention committee worked hard to make this a convention to remember and I feel it was. Without the great committee we had for convention, we would not have had the success we had. I would like to extend my thanks for all our committee: Greg Laws, George Morrison, Sherry Huxtable, Linda Timmons, Will Huxtable, and Maxine Morrison. I would also like to extend my thanks to the workers who again, without their help we would not have had the success we had: Bruce Bettinger, Amy Timmons, Carolyn Laws, Scott Bettinger, Bill Preheim, Keith and Judi Pfautz. And last, but not least, I would like to thank all the people who attended the convention. If you had not attended the convention would not have been a success.

Greetings from the Sunshine State By Susie Sutton I wanted to send a short note wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season and let everyone know that we miss our friends in Wichita. I can’t believe it’s been 18 months since I moved and a lot has happened. We bought a house, both of us have changed jobs, and my parents have moved here. We were very fortunate to find a great house less than a mile from the beach that was what we were looking for and could afford it. Another change is our vehicles. Once we moved down here, we’ve had lots of company surprisingly(ha) and it was difficult to transport people in the Miata or the 2 door Rodeo, so we bought a four door people mover/grocery getter. It just so happens that it has 300 hp; Chad bought a WRX Sti. He then decided he wanted to sell his Miata. Not wanting to be in Florida without a convertible, I traded the Rodeo on a new Miata; one with a factory installed turbo charger, the MazdaSpeed. It sure is a change driving an all-wheel drive car with LOTS of horsepower. We’ve been autocrossing it for a year now. Chad loves it and is doing great; but I’m still trying to get the hang of it. We’ve been autocrossing regularly with the Sunriders Motorsports club which is part of the Sunriders Miata Club. It’s been decided that since there are more non-Miatas participating that it should no longer be part of the Miata club. Loren (Williams) and Chad have formed a new club under the NASA sanctioning. NASA (National Autosports Association) has a race club in Florida but not an autocross club. NASA-X Tampa becomes a real organization next month. SCCA has a presence in Florida, but events are about 2 hours away and the club meetings are also held quite a distance away. By joining NASA, drivers can compete as members in the autocrosses and can also run track events (similar to HPDE) without joining another club. This year as a Sunrider’s member, Chad also had to join another club in order to run at Sebring. He had a blast at Sebring. That track is awesome. I decided not to try it early this year; a friend who races there said we would be up to 140 easy and also warned of the concrete walls. I thought I should be more comfortable in the car before taking it out on track. I did get to ride along with his instructor while Chad was in class; I can’t wait to get out there now. The concrete walls are away from the track; one would have to get way out of control to hit one (except on the last turn). Even though we’re F1 fans, we decided to take in the Indy race, St. Pete Grand Prix. The street racing was absolutely unbelievable. It was exciting that a driver from St Pete (has one of his homes here) won the race. We also watched the Indy Lites and Club racing event. It was thrilling to watch and cheer on Bob Woodhouse from Nebraska in the Club Racing. It was great talking with him in the pits; he actually remembered Chad from some Salina autocrosses in Salina. Unfortunately, he had an accident which caused him to end in the back half. We had seats at the start-finish, a long straight which our friends thought were great, but next year we’ll have seats so we can watch the excitement from a corner. Well, I guess that’s about all for now. We miss you all and hope you all have a great holiday season and fun, exciting New Year.

Rally Master’s Birthday Rally by Rich Bireta The Rally Master’s Birthday Rally, hosted by the Wichita Region, with rally master Keith Pfautz was held Saturday, July 30. A field of ten entrants started and, more importantly, finished the rally. The Kansas Region was responsible for 3 and one half of the ten entries. Randy Gregg brought his Mustang and ran the event with Bruce Bettinger as navigator. Dennis and Marise Smirl postponed a trip to Colorado and brought their green Taurus SHO. Albert Weaver and I ran the event in Rally Volvo (Albert’s white 744) using our Timewise rally odometer and, for the first time, relying on my new rally calculator software and Palm Pilot hardware for the calculating duties. I was able to convince my oldest two daughters, Devon and Anne Marie, to try rallying for the first time. Bruce Bettinger’s efforts to fuel inter-region rally participation are starting to pay off. The event started north of Wichita and went north and west, making a loop around Coronado Heights and through Lindsborg before ending at Bill Preheim’s farmstead near Heston. The unpredictable fun started early when the contestants found a railroad crossing closed for construction two miles into the odometer leg! Luckily, the detour was short and one could simply restart the odometer leg at the next stop light. This incident was particularly humorous because this same rally master had to cancel two of the three legs of his rally last summer, through no fault of his own, due to last minute road construction. A ferocious wheat field stubble burn on leg one was the only other incident of note. The event featured five legs, with checkpoints two and four being Do It Yourself checkpoints, where the contestant is responsible for their own timing. I was concerned about my daughters being able to follow the route, but in retrospect I needn’t have worried. I registered us together so they would get the car number immediately behind us. At the end of the odometer check and at each checkpoint I was relieved to see they were just a minute or so behind us (and still smiling). The only problem Albert and I had was my mistake in forgetting to start the odometer on the last leg. It was a mile or so before I realized my mistake and so a U turn and restart was in order. The results were very satisfying. Albert and I won the event, Randy and Bruce came in fourth and the Smirl’s finished eighth. I was most proud, however, of my daughters who finished second, beating the third place car by 7 points (4.2 seconds). See the photo for the secret of their success. The post rally venue featured a cook out with hamburgers and brats and plenty of liquid libations to fuel the post rally conversations. Another successful event for the Wichita Region!
