A major part of our new era is the automobile industry. Automobiles were introduced in 1908, but they didn’t become big until now. Cars registered in the U.S. in 1920 were 8 million; today cars registered reach up to 23 million. The “Big Three” automotive companies are Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. Henry Ford, founder of Ford, applied Frederick Winslow Taylor’s technique of scientific management to make faster assembly lines. In 1925, his cars were rolling off the assembly line every 10 seconds. The establishment of assembly lines produced 60% more cars in the U.S. than before. Ford also increased worker’s pay from $2 to $7 a day. From 1923 to today, workers’ income increased over 11%.

Henry Ford’s goal was to make cars simple, reliable, and affordable. In 1910, cars average price were $850. In 1927, Ford’s Model T cost only $295. A year ago, he came out with his Model A car (above) in any color imaginable and in 17 body styles. I myself own a green Model A and i love the car, it’s a beauty. Ford really know what he’s doing.

Coco Chanel InterviewBy Samalya Thenuwara

1. You have a peculiar accent, where are you from?

I was born in the lovely city of Auvergne, which is in France of course. I was

born in the year of 1893, believe me, some will try to convince you I am fibbing,

that truly, I was born in the year of 1883, but that is just rubbish.

2. How would you describe your childhood?

That is quite the question. Well, I will admit, it was not very pleasant. I did not

have my parents care, but was sent to live with two horrid aunts.

Interviewer: Actually, we did some research as well and found out that you lived in a

Monastery as an orphan, is that not true?

Coco: That… is an interesting point… Oh fine, I admit it, there were no aunts. I

lived among nuns in a Catholic Monastery, that is the truth. I hope that satisfies you.

3. Level with me, is your real name not Gabrielle?

I do not see how that your beeswax, but if you must know, Coco is just a more

ritzy name. It is nothing for you to razz about. It was given to me when I was a

singer in my younger years.

4. How did your career begin?

As I admitted, I lived as an orphan in a Monastery, there I learned the basic

skills of a seamstress. That is where it all began, from there I went on to become

who I am today.

Interviewer: Well, here we are with the infamou Madam Chanel.Coco: Ah stop, you flatter me.Interviewer: Baloney, madam! Your new line is just the berries, you seem to be the big cheese of the fashion nation!Coco: What a funny bird you are!Interviewer: Shall we start the questions now?Coco: And how! I am quite ready, in fact, I am on the edge of my seat.Interviewer: How ducky!Coco Chanel 1928

Coco Chanel Interview Continued5. What are your views on the changing styles of ladies?

My view? What is there to view? I am surprised you ask for I am the one

changing the style! Of course I approve of what I do, or else why would I do it?

6. Why does your new line resemble the styles of men?

Ah, that is where you are wrong! They are not ‘styles of men.’ They are

styles of comfort; they are styles of modern women! As an example, my Chanel

suit is ‘manly’ as you say, but it is so comfortable and so practical. As I always say,

luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.

7. Tell me about the black dress you have just designed.

Oh you mean the little black dress! It is the color black, what a lovely color;

yet it has such an awful reputation! The color black is thought of as sad and dull. I

want to change that idea; I wish the make the color black a color of elegance and

ritziness.

8. Tell us about your new perfume. Why is there such a buzz around it?

Ah the Chanel No. 5. Not only does it smell divine, it also is the first perfume

to display a designer’s name. I wonder if that shall catch on.

9. Tell me about your haircut. Everyone seems to rave of it – not to mention

all the janes seem to copycat it as well!

Oh! Isn’t it just the bee's knees? Its called a bob, I spend half the time I

usually spend to comb my hair. It is yet another sign of us modern women, out with

the old in with the new!

10. What about your skin. It seems to glow like the sun!

This is what happens when you spend time out in the sun, you start to glow!

It is known as a tan.

Interviewer: Well, I think we have taken enough of your time. Thank you so much.

Coco: Oh think nothing of it, it was my pleasure. Ciao. 5

Babe Breaking RecordsBy Alex Schwickerath

George Herman Ruth, also known as “Babe Ruth,” has just set the record for amount of home runs hit in a single season. Babe hit his 60th home run of the season at Friday’s game, off the Washington Senators lefty pitcher, Tom Zachary. Our reporter got to speak a few words with him after the game. “I knew I was going to hit it, I knew it was gone right when it hit the bat,” insisted Ruth.

George Herman Ruth Jr. was born February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland. There he lived with his parents and his one sister in a poor neighborhood. His six other siblings did not survive infancy. At the age of seven, Ruth was sent to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys where he learned life lessons and was taught the game of baseball from Brother Mathias, a monk at the school.

In 1914, Babe Ruth signed with the minor league Baltimore Orioles team. Here he performed well, leading him to be sold to the Boston Red Sox where he began his major league career as a pitcher. He led the Boston Red Sox to 3 World Series titles. Boston’s coach sold Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919.

As a Yankee, Ruth broke his record by hitting a mind boggling 54 home runs in his 1920 season. He wasn’t done. He again broke his single season homerun record, hitting an astounding 60 at the last game of the regular season this past Friday. With Babe Ruth leading the way, the New York Yankees have become one of the most dominant teams we have witnessed throughout the years.

Babe Ruth and the rest of the outstanding Yankees (110-44) lineup will face the Pittsburgh Pirates (94-60) at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for game 1 of the 1927 World Series. Tune into the exciting match-up on KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Do YOU want to live in a world of peace?

By: Sarah Ahmed

The Great war caused many issues in our country; and most of us are still dealing with post-war issues. 10 million lives were taken. We spend over 3 billion dollars buying war bonds to pay for weapons. This nearly drained all of our economic resources.

Technology, since the war, has been rapidly advancing. countries started showing of their ability to produce higher end quality of mass weapons. They began to compete to see who could create more weapons. their creations were sometimes a threat to civilians.

There were some attempts to reduce the amounts of weapons being used, for example the Sussex pledge. Even wilson tried to take some weapons with the Fourteen points.

Of course, only some of them were passed but with reservations.

The conflict of weapons has been a big issue in the past few years but finally, after the washington naval conflict, they have set some rules. All the countries surprisingly agreed on disarmament. Some weapons were taken away and there is a limited amount of money that can be used for the US navy.

Teapot Dome Scandal:All RevealedBy Samalya D. Thenuwara

We have been informed of a terrible scandal here at Wireless World, a peculiar happening now known as the Teapot Dome Scandal. We are horrified to hear of this mess, and so shall you, dear readers. Brace yourselves, for this shall be a shock to last the ages. What is this Teapot Dome I speak of, you may ask. It is a name of an oil field in the great state of Wyoming. But this is not just any oil field, it is a private government oil field. Along with this field and Elk Hills and Burns Vista of California have been… leased out in secret. By no other than Albert M. Fall. Mr. Fall is our Secretary of Interior, and is a part of the notorious Ohio Gang put together by our very own president Warren G. Harding. Quite the scandal indeed. Now for the details of this event. Formally these lands under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Navy, but recently our president had decided to give those responsibilities to the Department of the Interiors. Taking advantage of this convenient opportunity, Fall decided to strike. He agreed to loan the lands out to two companies. Mammoth Oil Company headed by Henry F. Sinclair and Pan America Company headed by Edward F. Doheny.

Luckily for us, it was not long before someone questioned the situation. A Wyoming oilman felt that something was amiss, confused as to why the Teapot Dome was being leased, he contacted his congressman looking for answers. That, is the very moment the whole scheme came tumbling down. The story was out, and the scandal was born. It was found out that Sinclair had given Fall $260,000 in Liberty Bonds. If I may add, I see this as a disgraceful use of the ‘Liberty’ bonds. On the other hand, Doheny had given Fall $100,000 in cash. All in all, Fall would have come out quite wealthy out of the scenario. The key word being ‘would.’ Sadly for Fall that was not the case. After his crime was found out, he was sentenced to a year in jail. Justice seems to have won out in the end. As a Democrat and a proud citizen of these here United States, I must ask myself; are the Republicans fit for taking care of the country? Though Fall is at fault, Harding was the one to put him in his role as Secretary of the Interior. Is it fair to claim the president at fault? Is the supreme reign of the Republicans coming to an end? Only you, the readers, may decide. 12

Jazz it Up By: Safeya Siddig

All the talk now a days is about jazz. Jazz is one of the biggest hits we have right now in the twenties. Starting in New Orleans, this swinging, soulful music emerged throughout the nation. This era we are in, is called the Golden Twenties.

Harlem is the city of jazz. With its roaring streets filled with bright bold lights, and people flocking to the clubs. You just cannot help but dance and have fun once you step into the city. Jazz is mostly performed by African Americans, who sing, dance, and play music for the audience.

Clubs are starting to evolve with their loud music that its just so contagious that you can’t help but dance. One of the most popular is the Cotton Club in Harlem, where you can dance out to the lovely sound of the sax, and lovely voices of the singers. As you see the scandalous flappers on stage.

Cotton Club in Harlem, New York

After The Great War, most social conventions got destroyed. They were then redeveloped, we as a nation are starting to change as we go through The Golden Twenties Era. Its is currently influencing our pop culture. We starting let loose, become more free, and let go of some of our old traditions, while we still add new ones to our culture.

Fashion Frenzy: All Dolled UpBy: Sasha Tyler

As the fashion of tomorrow comes into today men and women begin to take action. Women’s skirt hems have been on the rise, they are sending off their big hats and shipping in their scarves, ribbons, and feathers. But not only is the female couture changing, men are throwing away their long coats and trading them for new slim fit jackets.

Not only is apperal a new trend of the year, women bid adieu to their long locks and are now going for a cleaner much shorter looking ‘bob’ cut. Women of all ages are saying it is the “growing back” stage of cutting their hair they enjoy most.

As someone very wise once said “What’s an assemble without perfectly matching shoes?” Americans respond with “Nothing, of course!” People of the nation are calling these shoes the cats meow! Out with the heels in with the boots all women and men are wearing the same style. These leather combats are lined with the softest velvet you’ve ever felt!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. What to wear to a night out on the town? Although the day brings new surprises, the night brings back old elegance. Women change into their long skirts and beads. “Sun dips, skirt dips” is what Harpers Bazaar is raging about. Not only has the length changed the game has changed as well. Women create new couture with puffed sleeves, frill, ribbons, leg of mutton sleeves, and epaulettes. Get into the now with your raccoon fur accessories as well.

Wets vs. Drys Opinions on Prohibition

Dear editors of the Wireless World,

This is Natalie O. Beber, wife and a mother of two children, and I am writing to your from the great city of New York. I am writing to y’all in regards to the argument that seems to be happening all around about Prohibition. I am a proud member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement and from the bottom of my heart I believe alcohol is nothing but evil. It is poison for our society! In this decade, the use of alcohol in this country has gone to a mind boggling heights.

There must be an end to this, and I believe Prohibition would be the answer. For without it, alcohol would slowly bring the end of mankind itself. Drinking and going to these, ‘speakeasies,’ is an abomination! Alcohol leads to crime, dishonesty, violence, and other social ills of the sort. One sip and one’s whole personality may change completely, and rarely for the better. We must not allow that. Being a mother I want to make sure my children have a peaceful society to be a part of, and at this point in time alcohol is a threat to my hopes. In addition I would like to show my support for the Anti-Saloon League and its head Mr. Wayne Wheeler whose goal is to abolish alcohol from these lands. May our country be saved and I hope more shall support Prohibition.

Much appreciation,N. O. Beber (Samalya Thenuwara)

Dear editors of Wireless World,

My name is Virginia Dorris and I am a 22 year old who lives alone and makes ends meet by working at Rusty’s, the most well known restaurant in town. By passing this banana oil prohibition law I got laid off because our sales where in the toilet from all the town’s guys and dolls not coming in for drinks. Not to mention how big a debt our state is in from not making those revenue taxes from our liquor.

I think the fuzz need to quit being so high hat about this and let the youth of tomorrow live their lives and be who they are and if that means getting ossified then so be it. They will learn that for themselves. The police are busy being such a flat tire that they don’t even realize that once they shut down one speakeasies two more pop up. With all this hokum I hope I have gotten my message across.

Thanks for listeningVirginia L. Dorris (Sasha Tyler)17

Rural vs. Urban Opinions on different lifestyles

Dear Editors of the Wireless World,

RURAL REVOLUTIONEarl J. Bucolic, Jacksonville, Mississippi (Alex Schwickerath)

Big cities are booming, and people are moving into urban areas. And with it comes sex, drugs, and alcohol. These changes are not good for us – they do not reflect the foundation of how America was built. In 1776, 90% of newcomers worked as farmers. Now we have fewer farmers to cultivate crops. We can’t meet the food demands of our growing population. We need farmers! In World War I, Europe’s farmlands were destroyed due to destruction from battle. It was farmers who produced food and exported it to them during reconstruction of their lands. Farmers aided the allies and boosted our economy.

With people flooding to cities and working in factories, more goods are being produced. Advertising of these new products entices us, the consumers, to want, want, want. This brings about installment buying – it allows Americans to buy things without payment. We get the impression that we can afford anything and pay for nothing. Bad credit will come back to nip us in the caboose!

Dear Editors of the Wireless World,

WITH URBAN COMES FUNGottub Aeyorn Knaw, Boston, Massachusetts (Safeya Siddig)

Unlike the isolated areas in the countryside, the big cities are a much better place to have an easy, steady lifestyle. In the countryside it is much harder to get around, and to buy necessities that you need in an everyday life, but in the city you it’s not as difficult to own a breezer. Finding a job is much easier in the city because there are so many factories that can manufacture goods, so factory workers are much needed. It is also a lot better to live in the urban areas because that’s where the fun is all about. The clubs are great places where you can get some things off your chest and have whoopee. In the big cities, you could also shop easily anywhere for your essentials. The city makes life a lot easier.

The urban areas are a much better area for our economy because of what the factories do for us and other countries, who we trade with. In the factories they manufacture weapons for our soldiers overseas. That will help us have more of an advantage during the war times. Also, with our new technology and machines, things we use in our everyday lives are produced, much faster, for example; clothing, food, cleaning products, etc.

Page 20: The wireless world - period 6

Religion vs. Science

Dear Editors of the Wireless World, I am a fundamentalist, one who believes in the Bible. I believe every word written in that book is correct and should not be denied. That is why I am against the practices of Darwinism. Few years ago, Tennessee passed the Butler Act, an anti-evolution law. The law prohibits practices of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. I believe the theory denies the divine creation of man that is taught in the bible. John Scopes, 24, is a man who was arrested for teaching the theory to his students. Scopes was obviously guilty and at fault for his wrong doing, but he was put into trial anyway. Thank our gracious Lord for the fundamentalist lawyer, William Jennings Bryan, who helped win the case in proving Scopes guilty. Bless his heart, but Bryan died five days after the trial; he is in the hands of Him now. Thank the Lord again for having great Butler Act produced in the 12 states and passed in 4. Bryan’s help in winning the Scopes Trial also helped turn fundamentalism into a movement. We are forever grateful.Thank you and God bless you,

John Christian, Alabama (Taylor Shelfo)

Dear Editors of the Wireless World,I am a proud scientist. Its is the only thing that gives us explanation for thing

going on that we do not know about; and as a former science teacher, I believe that Mr John scopes has done no harm. The conflict with Science vs Religion has been going on for a very long time and there needs to be an end to it. This is the 1920’s and thing are rapidly changing. These children are the future of our country and need to be taught how it has come to be.

I believe that John Scopes in an innocent man. The Butler act is a bunch of baloney! People in the Bible Belt need to be more open minded and modernize their ways of life. We simply can not live by the bible forever. Things are different now; women are more involved in our government, technology has increased greatly, even the way people dress has changed and i think the Butler Act and our strong involvement with the bible is next.

Letter from the Editors

21

Dear readers of the Wireless World,The Amos N’ Andy show, popular on TV and radio, is a show that

displays how the higher class views African Americans. Starring Alvin Childress, Tim Moore, and Spencer William Jr. The show is causing conflict between groups for and against African Americans. The show has been on for over a year, and runs six days a week. It is currently the biggest thing on the radio. The white actors portray Amos and Andy as black men using “black face” or black makeup.

Some Africans felt the show wasn’t right, henceforth others enjoyed the comedy. Civil rights leaders asked African Americans if they were offended by the show, and there was a split between who they were and weren’t. African Americans were offended because it is “demeaning and reinforced stereotypes.” The African Americans that weren’t offended by the comedy felt that the show will start a new beginning of African Americans on TV.

A majority of our population enjoy the comedy show, whereas some are offended by it. White people enjoy the show because most of our community are against African Americans. Whites believed the comedy in Amos N’ Andy is accurate to what African Americans act like. There are very few white people that are against the show however, because they feel the community won’t grow together if there’s conflict between racial groups.

After watching the show for the first time, we’ve developed a negative opinion. The actors make the black characters seem dumb. The show’s racial jokes is starting negative stereotypes towards blacks. We believe the show can affect the way society sees African Americans now. In the future, we think they will be identified based off the racist comments. Although the show is entertaining, it’s harmful to African Americans. We along with many other people are against the show and cannot wait until it is off the air.

Sincerely,Your beloved Editors, Taylor and Sarah
