Greetings From Your Chapter Directors

Tom & Colleen FitzGerald

GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”

We’ve had a month of weather that fluctuated between dry and wet! Chapter A visited quite a few chapters during the month of May.

Janice, Bill, Nancy, Carl, Jay and Henry captured the Central plaque and it will be given away at our next gathering on June 14.

Chapter W in Eden had a delightful surprise as the following 11 A members attended their gather-ing on the 14th and helped fill the room; Carl, Nancy, Jay, Henry, Larry, Jane, Mark, Bill, Janice, Tom and Colleen.

Paula Hines sent a newsletter article about the doctor from Eden who lost his life in a motorcycle wreck due to him using tire shine on his tires. I sent the article out to all our members and Dwain Strader replied to my email thusly;

“Hi Tom and Paula,

It is also important to note that even though he may not have put the tire shine on the tread, the centrifugal force of the rolling tire would have caused the tire shine to be slung out into the tread area as it was going down the road. “

Dwain

Dwain makes an excellent point and we should all remember that bikes, unlike cars or trikes, use the rounded edge of the tire for traction when making turns. Therefore we should never use tire shine on our tires. Your tires may look great but you may not be able to see them from a hospital bed or worse.

District Educator, Tony Prewitt, has ARC/TRC courses schedule for June 23 and we should see a flyer on the district website or on page 12 in this newsletter. This is a great opportunity to sharpen your skills whether you ride a two or three wheeler.

The IRP has two new members; our own Randy Causey and Bob Remillard from B2. Anyone else interested in signing up can just drop me an email and we’ll put you on the list. I hope to do more riding in the coming months and will attend as many impromptu rides as I can when my business schedule allows. Ride Safe. Tom & Colleen FitzGerald NC-A Chapter Directors

I believe Spring got condensed down into two or three days this year. May seemed more like Summer, and brought us a tropical storm to give us another round of flash floods. I, for one, certainly hope June will be calmer and give us some good riding weather!

We had a nice turnout for the Freedom Memorial Wall at Smokin’ Harley Davidson on Sunday, May 6th. To all those who came for the ride and the memorial service, a sincere Thank You! This service is held annually, on the first Sunday in May each year. Please note it on your calendars for next year, and try to join us, starting May with the Freedom Memorial Wall service honoring our departed friends and loved ones, and ending the month with Memorial Day, honoring those service men and women who died in the service of our country, fighting to preserve our freedom and way of life. On May 26, we were back at Smokin’ Harley Davidson for a Benefit for the Veterans Administration Hospital located in Kernersville. I showed up and signed up, but left before the ride when the sky started crying raindrops. I was talking with a Gold Wing rider there who works at the VA hospital, and wonder of wonders, he is a participant in Chapter A! He has not been able to attend gatherings for a while, but knows he is certainly welcome to come when he can! Our dinner ride on May 18th took us to the Olympic Restaurant, 8900 W. Market Street, Colfax. We had a nice group, enjoyed good conversation, and some good home-style cooking. We’ll announce the restaurant for June at our June gather-ing. Please come out and join us if you can for a relaxed evening with friends! Continuing our Rider Education information, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute did a study of motorcycle acci-dents and incidents for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, and one of the most frequent collision potentials involves inter-sections. On May 27th, around 8:45 pm, a motorcyclist was killed by a left-turning driver at the intersection of Summit Avenue and Textile Drive. The 66 year old driver of the car was driving north on Summit, the 33 year old motorcyclist was driving south on Summit, and the crash occurred as the driver of the car was making a left turn into Textile Drive. The motorcy-clist died, the car driver was not injured. Reported by the Winston-Salem Journal, Greensboro News & Record, and Fox 8 News. This tragic scenario is a classic example of the most frequent type of collision or near-collision involving motorcycles and other vehicles. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) addresses this issue in Section 6 of the Basic Rider Course (BRC) and the VTTI report addresses this and gives the risk factors as follows: Section 6. Risk and Riding § Current instruction: “Crashes, if they ever happen, occur mostly in curves and at intersec-

tions.” Supporting data: See Section 4 regarding curves; the risk of crashes and near-crashes are increased at various types of intersections: traffic signaled intersections (nearly 3 times), parking lot/driveway intersections (8 times), and intersections uncontrolled in the rider’s direction (40 times). Note that the indicated risk increases include near-crashes, not only crashes (including any type of loss of control, even if regained)

Current instruction: Be visible, especially in curves and at intersections. Also “Use your eyes and mind to determine how and when to adjust position as situations unfold. Factors in front make up most of the hazards that affect you. You want to be able to identify them as early as possible so you can respond well ahead of time and do not have to re-act to an emergency at the last possible moment.” Supporting data: This study shows that having to maneuver to avoid an object (such as a pedestrian, cyclist, vehicle, animal, or other object) increases the crash/near-crash risk by nearly 12 times.

The car driver should not have attempted the turn with the motorcycle approaching. The motorcycle driver should have observed the car slowing and anticipated the potential for a left turn. Actions to reduce the risk would include slowing the motorcycle, covering the clutch and brakes to reduce reaction time in case he needed to slow or stop, possi-bly move his lane position (movement attracts the eye and may have better signaled his approach), and have an escape path in mind should it be needed. MSF instructors teach the use of a system, SEE, to Search, Evaluate and Execute, just as truck and car driving instructors teach a system such as the Smith System. This does put a lot of the responsibil-ity for preventive measures on the motorcyclist, but we’re the ones most likely to be injured or worse.

Be alert, aware, and practice your riding skills. If you have a passenger, appreciate their assistance in helping you be aware of potential problems. That extra pair of eyes may be a tremendous help.

Next month, we’ll address some group riding considerations.

Let’s ride in 2018 – with a commitment to safe and enjoyable riding!

Paula, Ride Coordinator
