From Your Chapter Directors

I am writing this article in December during the Christmas holidays to be published in our January newsletter. So, before going into New Year’s talk we sincerely hope everyone had a Very Merry Christmas, blessed with quality time spent with Family, Friends and Love Ones. Christmas is such a joyful and glorious time of the year with the shopping, gift giving and receiving and off course holiday

eating. It is our hope that all were blessed with good health during the holiday season. There were many news story headlines in 2016 covering a variety of topics, people and places. Just to list a few; police shootings (by and of police officers), terrorist attacks (home and aboard), extreme weather patterns, zika virus and the Presidential election. We as Americans negotiated through all, the good and the bad and are stronger as a result of the experiences. We are blessed to live in this country where so many people from different cultures, social economical, education and religious backgrounds can come together and do the best thing for our country. 2016 was good to NC-X, WakeForestWings. We thank everyone for participating, coming to the gatherings, visiting other chapters, opening your homes for chapter events, going on rides and just being really good people. We love you guys. We had several rides including overnight rides, pool party, super bowl party, game nights, progressive dinner ride, and meets for breakfast, lunch, dinner and on several other occasions. We put together our first X-tober fest which was a huge success. Our Core Team (The Staff) was outstanding. You carried most of the load and have been there with support and leadership all the way. Wow! What an Awesome Team. We thank you for all you do for the chapter. There are only a couple of minor changes to our 2017 staff that will transition later into the New Year. Our outgoing Couples, Roger and Sue Turner served our chapter well the past two years. They are awesome people and will be missed when they depart on the next venture in their lives. Glenn and Joy Kennedy was surprised and over joyed with the announcement at our Christmas party they had earned the honor as ambassadors, Chapter Couples of the Year for 2017. Glenn and Joy are team players and give selflessly of their time and attention. They are role models within the chapter, and as a result, are honored with the distinguished title of Chapter Couple of the Year for Wake Forest Wings. Now on to 2017. We hope to see everyone have a robust, prosperous, healthy, and most of all Fun 2017. Hopefully some of the tension in our country will ease as we

transition into a new administration. We look forward to all GWRRA members having a blessed and awesome year enjoying Riding and Associating with “Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge” in their respective areas especially at the chapter level. At NC-X our goal is to embrace all members, increase member’s participation and grow our membership. And, Oh ….. Have Fun. Until next month, have fun and ride safe.

From Your Assistant Chapter Directors

As you are reading this, the new year 2017 has just started, and with it comes a new year of possibilities! A new year of possible good times with friends (for Fun, Safety and Knowledge) riding our motorcycles and enjoying life.

2016 was a great year for us, even given the challenges we had as a result of Sue’s broken arm and multiple surgeries and

Roger’s health problems with his diabetes. Through it all we can say without a doubt, God is always and only good. Looking back over the previous year, remembering the good times and the not so good times, seeing how you grew is always a good thing to do at the start of a new year.

It is also the time to start making plans for the coming year. Sue and I are planning on heading to South Africa in mid-June, but until then we will be as active as we can be with NC-X and GWRRA. We have attended the NC-C2’s (Smithfield) Chili Cook-off in February the past couple years and we plan on attending again this year. It is always a great time. Then, there is NC-Z’s (Rocky Mount) Blessing of the Bikes in April. This is another event that is always worth attending. It is a great way to start off the riding season. For me, looking to the Lord for safety is an important part of “All the gear, all the time”.

I would love to be able to attend Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, TX (August 29 – September 2, 2017), but if all goes according to plan we will be serving the Lord in South Africa by then. We will also miss WOTS and the second annual X-tober Fest.

From Your MEP Officers Microsoft Office lists synonyms of fun as “amusing, entertaining, enjoyable, exciting, and pleasurable.” Today I’d like to discuss something more along the lines of enjoyable and pleasurable---NC-X joins hands with all

of NC East in support of O’Berry Neuro-Medical Treatment Center located in Goldsboro, NC. This DHHS specialized skilled nursing center serves adults with diagnosed intellectual and neurodevelopmental disorders. These adults are restricted in some manner by chronic and complex medical conditions coexisting with and/or resulting from conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Dementias, or Autism for example. The O’Berry Center is a 24/ 7/ 365 facility with a 3 employee to each resident ratio and they do a GREAT job. The residents range from a seemingly non-interactive state to highly functional; most are extremely friendly and thrilled to have visitors. The O’Berry Center is set up like a mini-village or town, encouraging and maintaining as much independence in its residents as is possible. In an annual trek, the NC East Wings meet in Goldsboro to deliver both funds and gifts to the O’Berry Center. This represents substantial offerings thanks to everyone’s contributions throughout the year’s various fund raisings. This year, the NC-X contribution was sourced by a general fund donation, a portion of X-toberfest funds and special raffles, dollar auctions and product auctions at our monthly gatherings. The fundraising focuses during our gatherings were indeed fun and we were repeatedly reminded that it was for a good cause. But I personally never connected with that good cause until I took that cold wintry trek in early December. It was truly amazing! We were greeted by a man who has greeted the Wings for quite a long time. Some of the returning riders greeted residents by name, and boy did they light up! Touring the campus reveals a truly amazing attitude of respect that permeates the facility. The care givers knock on the door, announce themselves by name and function, and ask permission to enter the living quarters. They are gentle, always affirming and yet simultaneously firm and fun. O’Berry Center focuses on offering life-enriching experiences on a continual, daily basis. For example, when able, the residents are given purpose through jobs! The little town hosts the O’Berry Towne Artisans Guild where the only artisans are the residents themselves. Their products are both displayed and are available for purchase at the Appalachian style log cabin located on the perimeter of the residential zone. These crafts are created in a workshop that includes a woodworking, painting, pottery, and soap making. Taking advantage of the Christmas season, each table was topped with a very attractive twig-style reindeer atop a disk cut from trees felled by Hurricane Matthew! (The O’Berry Center truly makes the most of what they are given!) These centerpieces

also were for sale. A Christmas parade was planned that included all willing Goldwing riders and floats for many of the residents to ride on. Work and play and care all accomplished with respect for the resident. Also on campus is a small eleven room hotel where family members can stay while visiting with their loved ones. And there’s even more—the O’Berry Center has given birth to the O’Berry Center Foundation. The foundation is an integral part of, and yet stands apart from, the O’Berry Center. The foundation is committed to making the lives of persons with developmental disabilities happier, healthier and more fulfilling. They assist not only families associated with O’Berry but also families with disabled children and those families choosing to keep their disabled members at home. They are both a legal and medical advocate and on occasion a provider of special needs equipment, such as specially designed car seats and wheelchairs. The fellowship of our Goldwing friends, the yummy barbecue lunch, the prevailing Christmas spirit and the O’Berry Center day was indeed a pleasurable one enjoyed by all in spite of the blustery weather. If you didn’t make it this year, put it on your New Year’s calendar now. May each of you have a safe and prosperous New Year.

Let’s Do It

Hello world it is such a treasure to see everyone who has made it to another year. In just a few months we will all be back out there on our toys, new and old. We can use this time to check out our bikes to make sure all is well. Those of us that are year round riders usually have these things

done on a regular. You might say what is he talking about? You Know. (T-CLOCS) Tires, Controls, Lights, Oil, Chassis, and Side Stand. Hopefully everyone had a Happy Holiday Season. Have fun, be safe, and see you on the road.

Motorcycle Humor…… A friend of mine has two tickets for the 2017 Super Bowl -- box seats plus airfare, accommodations, etc., but he didn't realize when he bought them that this is going to be on the same day as his wedding - so he can't go. If you're interested and want to go instead of him, it's at St Peter's Church, in New York City, at 5 p.m. Her name's Louise. She's 5'4", about 125 lbs., good cook, makes $130,000 a year. She will be the one in the white dress.

From Your New Chapter Couple of the Year

2017 Wow. Christmas brings many surprises, doesn't it? I wonder what you would say

was your greatest Christmas surprise? How did you respond? Not all surprises are good surprises and I hope NO one experienced that kind of surprise. The day of this writing is December 20---Christmas has not even arrived. But I have been totally blown over. Recently, Glenn and I were hanging out with friends, singing Christmas carols, witnessing chivalry mixed with great humility, laughing, cutting up, putting rings in noses and wearing baskets on heads – having a very good time all around. Our friends were really coming up with hilarious answers to the mysteries of life. Changing tempo, a lull begins to fall over our group, then a commanding voice takes center stage. He begins talking about such things as honors, responsibilities and continuing on. My mind is whirling—where is this coming from? What is he talking about? He continues in sharp contrast to the preceding frivolity, as he talks about doing a thing differently here than elsewhere, and what’s required and what’s not. I just couldn’t get on board. What is he talking about? And to no one’s surprise, I seem to be the only one who is lost. Then comes the unexpected, John calls Glenn and me to his side. There he adorns us with Olympic- style medallions, pins, hanger bars and ribbons. Yes this was the X-Wings Christmas party and I’m willing to bet you already know what was going on! Yes, we were recognized as the “2017 Couple of the Year” for the Wake Forest Wings chapter. The announcement was completely unanticipated and John told us we could not decline this honor.

From Your Motorist Awareness Coordinator

Brad Bradford Winter riding poses a special challenge for motorcyclists. Consideration has to be made to the road surface, traffic conditions and your

bike’s preparation and condition. So many other road users are scurrying about as they prepare for the holidays. Their attention is most certainly on getting to the next shopping location and finding the perfect parking space. They most assuredly don’t expect to see motorcyclists riding. Of course, we here in North Carolina know that any given day might be a perfectly beautiful day for taking out our motorcycle. When we do so, we have to be cognizant of the fact that other motorists will be abnormally inattentive. The typical distractions of cell phones, other passengers, and thoughts of hectic holiday activities exacerbate the dangers we face. Do yourselves a favor and ensure we are very well rested and not subject to the same distractions as our fellow road users are exposed to. Happy New Year! Until next month, Safe Riding!

Motorcycle Humor…… Wearing Your Jacket

Backwards Two guys were roaring down the road on a motorcycle when the driver slowed up and pulled over. His leather jacket had a broken zipper, and he told his friend, "I can't drive anymore with the air hitting me in the chest like that." "Just put the jacket on backwards." His friend advised. They continued down the road

but around the next bend, they lost control and wiped out. A nearby farmer came upon the accident and ran to call the police. They asked him, "Are they showing any signs of life?" "Well," the farmer explained, "the driver was until I turned his head around the right way!

From Your Ride Coordinator Brad Bradford

Greetings and Happy New Year to everyone! By the time you read this newsletter, both Christmas and New Year are over and for each of you, I hope this was the best holiday season ever! We had a few activities during the month of December including the annual Rolesville Christmas parade on

December 4th and the NC-X Christmas party held at Johnny Bull’s Steakhouse in Louisburg, NC and the NC-X after party held at Rick and Barbie Yost’s home. Now it’s time to begin preparing for the upcoming 2017 riding season. NC-X has a lot of rides planned but there is lots of room on the calendar for even more rides. We’d love to hear from you about rides you’d like to see, participate in, or lead. In the meantime, there are a couple of rides that will be coming up in the mid to late spring that I’m requesting your input to help make them successful. Beginning on May 19, we’re planning a “History Ride” that will take us to Gettysburg, PA; Lancaster, PA; Valley Forge, PA; and Jamestown, VA. The intent is to ride to Lancaster and use that as a layover location while we visit and tour Gettysburg, the site of the flight 93 crash of September 11, 2001, and Valley Forge. Here’s a link to the flight 93 memorial if you’d like to get some historical perspective. https://www.nps.gov/flni/learn/photosmultimedia/virtualtour.htm Gettysburg of course, is the site of the deadliest 3 days of battle on American soil. On July 1, 1863, the Confederate and Union soldiers met and over the next 3 days, over 51,000 soldiers and civilians died in this epic battle. Here is a link to the site. http://www.civilwar.org/battlefields/gettysburg.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/# Valley Forge was the site of the 1777-1778 winter encampment of the Continental Army. The park commemorates the sacrifices and perseverance of the Revolutionary War generation and honors the ability of citizens to pull together and overcome

adversity during extraordinary times. It’s the site where Washington’s army marched into camp tired, hungry, cold, and ill-equipped to succeed on the battlefield. By June of 1778, this same army, now more trained after six months, pursued Sir Henry Clinton’s British army at the battle of Monmouth in New Jersey. You can learn more about Valley Forge here: https://www.nps.gov/vafo/index.htm. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. Between Jamestown and nearby Williamsburg, you will get a true picture of what the first settlers faced in this new land. Here’s a link to Jamestown: http://historicjamestowne.org/history/history-of-jamestown/ In order to plan for group accommodations and tours, I need to have an idea of how many people plan on going on this ride. Please call ((301) 237-0540) or email me ([email protected]) as soon as possible because the later we plan, the more difficult it will be to get good rates. I would like to provide this information to the folks in Lancaster by no later than January 31. The “History Ride” promise to be a fun ride, an educational adventure, and a supremely memorable activity. The following weekend is Memorial Day weekend and for those interested, the annual Rolling Thunder ride to Washington, DC occurs. Anyone interested in making this ride, please let me know. One word of caution though, hotel accommodations for this event tend to fill up quickly so if you want to attend, you really need to make your accommodations now. There are many related events occurring on that weekend including the United States Air Force air show at Andrews Air Force base, a memorial ride to Ground Zero in New York, and a tribute to fallen law enforcement officers. Of course there are also all the usual sights in DC such as the Smithsonian museum (including Air and Space, Natural History, American History, Viet Nam War memorial, World War II memorial, Korean War memorial, Lincoln memorial, Jefferson memorial, Martin Luther King memorial, Theodore Roosevelt memorial, the National Capital visitor center, the White House, and the newest monument of the African American museum, among others). The weekend of June 16 thru 18, we’re planning a Maryland Crab ride. A small contingent of us will ride to Maryland to purchase a couple of bushels of blue crabs then bring them back to North Carolina and have a feeding frenzy at a place to be determined. Please let us know if you’d like to participate. There will be plenty of crabs, shrimp, and other types of seafood and drinks.
