THE WEEKLY WORD EPIPHANY PARISH OF SEATTLE . JANUARY 13, 2014 Several Invitations by Holly Boone A Place. A Home. A Sanctuary. For many of us, Epiphany is all those good things. But when I read those words on the Sunday bulletin, I mentally add, “a people.” The capital campaign for Epiphany’s next 100 years is a gratifying success. Every one of us who worked on that campaign or respond- ed to its message can look forward to the exciting improvements afoot on this campus. Let us also remember, however, that what makes Epiphany a place, a home, a sanctuary are not only the walls and roof, the bricks and mortar, but we the people, the church. I invite everyone who wants Epiphany to be a place, a home, a sanc- tuary, to offer that unique gift of time, skills and energy he or she alone can give to the life of this parish. Paid clergy and staff by no means keep this place humming and lively all by themselves. Please study that yellow insert in the Sunday bulletins. Choose how you might improve, enlarge, renovate, repair, and make beautiful the work of Epiphany, which, as I try to understand it, is inviting souls to know the love of God and demonstrating that love ourselves. As chair of Epiphany’s Social Action Committee, I especially invite you to participate in parish ministries for those in need beyond our campus. As Linda Maxson wrote here in the December 9 issue of the Weekly Word, quoting Bishop Rickel, “Everything we do in here is so we can go out there. From here we go and serve Christ.” If a Christian is one who follows Christ, then the Christian must fol- low where Christ leads. And everything we know about Christ indi- cates he leads us not to an end of comfortable piety but to those who suffer. Radical. Revolutionary. That’s how the teachings of Jesus are often described. After 2000 years, Christianity has become so identiϐied with Western culture that perhaps it is hard to appreciate how ϐla- grantly the once-new religion ϐlaunted social conventions of the ancient world. But listen to a Christian in the years soon after Christ:
