At last the heat wave is just a sticky memory and the season has returned to normal. The meadows are all ablaze with wild asters and goldenrod…what a show that is! The annuals are flowering with all the energy they can muster and the lawns are turning green again after all the dry heat of the first half of the month. It looks like I’ll need to mow it one or two more times this year. It is a chore that I no longer look forward to but it is better that shoveling snow I guess. Soon it will be time for the mower to get a final cleaning and oil change before getting put in the back of the shed for the winter. The seasons just keep rolling along. This is the time of year that I like to collect seeds from annuals that I want to reproduce next year. At the end of a dry day, I’ll collect the mature seedpods from some of my favorites and put them into envelopes for storage. Cosmos, cleome, marigolds, and my purple amaranthus will all contribute to the collection. I’ll also gather seeds from easy-to-grow perennials like coneflower, the several varieties of gallardia that my wife Sharon started from seed several years ago and, of course, the black hollyhocks. There is such an abundance of seeds that I like to scatter what I don’t save into outlying areas and down the long driveway. Sometime they come up, sometimes they don’t. When they do it’s always a treat. Even as they say farewell to the waning season, real gardeners are working away on projects to make next year’s growing season even better than the one just passing. There are bulbs to plant, perennials to divide and shrubs that might need to be relocated. As the season winds down, time can often be found to build new beds for planting next spring. This is the time of year I like to look for bargains as the garden centers discount shrubs and perennials to move them out before winter. Often the plants I get during these fall sales don’t look like much with the leaves falling off as they go into dormancy but, as long as the roots and stems are in good shape, I’m willing to take a chance. Sometimes the bargains are so good that I buy plants that I have no plan for but the price is so good that I can’t pass them up. These plants will often have to spend the winter in their pots while I come up with a plan for them. I’m not afraid to winter-over perennials in pots or balled-in-burlap shrubs or trees. It’s all a question of knowing how to bring them through the harsh winter ahead. First, scout out a sheltered location. We know that our prevailing wind comes from the west and north. The east facing wall of a garage, shed or even the house is a great spot. The building will block the cold, dry air that can dehydrate our wintering plants. I’ve got a 4’ high retaining wall on the western side of my vegetable garden that works well for this purpose. Parallel to the wall, I’ll dig a trench deep enough to set my potted and balled bargains into. If I happen to have a tree that is so tall that it sticks above the wall, I’ll tip it on its side so the branches are below the top of the wall, protected from the wind. Then, I’ll fill around the pots and balls with loose soil and tamp it in. Until winter sends my treasures into complete dormancy, I’ll keep an eye out that they don’t dry out but, with rain such a regular feature this time of year, that’s not of much concern. As early as I can in spring, I’ll find places in my landscape for my fall bargains and plant them (adding bone meal, of course). So now, even though I take advantage of the fall planting season as much as I can, I know I can keep any leftovers safe through winter even if I run short of time this fall. Thanks for the read.

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a con-temporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritu-ally and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Mu-sic Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the rec-ognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culmi-nate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethle-hem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and iden-tifying folks to assist on vari-ous committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Chris-tian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

Duncan

Felicia

Coco - aka Chocula

Felicia came to us after being abandoned with her pups in a high kill shelter down south. A

plea went out to save her pups but we couldn’t leave this beautiful mom behind. She has

a super sweet and gentle disposition and is mature beyond her years. Felicia is good with with other dogs, cats and people. She has been vet checked, updated shots, heartworm tested

and more.

This little peanut still needs a home. He is a real sweetie with that Chihuahua, big dog attitude. Once he gets to know you he is all mush. He gets along with dogs & cats, is vet checked, heartworm tested, updated

vaccines and more.

This is Duncan! He is a Spaniel mix who is around 3 years old! Duncan was surrendered by his owners to a high kill shelter in Dublin,

North Carolina. Our rescuers saw that he was very sweet and great with other animals, but he was getting depressed being in this shelter. They knew they had to rescue him, and now he is heading up to us this Friday! He is up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, dewormed, vet checked, neutered, and

very loving and good with people and other animals alike!

Today’s vehicles are equipped with more ameni-ties than ever before. Driv-ers willing to spend a little extra can now cruise down the highways in vehicles equipped with built-in WiFi and cameras that allow driv-ers to see everything around their cars and trucks. While new gadgets attract drivers’ attention, sunroofs, which have been around since 1937, remain very popular as well. Drivers who like to allow a little light and fresh air into their vehicles may be surprised to learn that there are many different types of sunroofs. The following are a just a handful of sunroof options drivers may want to consider when buying their next vehicle.

· Top-mount: Drivers who want a top-mount sliding sunroof may be able to find both manual and electric

TYPES OF SUNROOFS

sliding options. In a top-mount sunroof, a large glass slides on tracks on top of the roof, and many feature integral wind deflectors that eliminate noise from the wind no matter how fast the car is traveling.

· Panoramic roof systems: Like their name implies, pan-oramic roof systems provide a wider view than other sun-roofs. That view is available whether the sunroof is open or closed, and panoramic systems are typically made of glass. Passengers in both the front and rear seats can enjoy the view through pan-oramic roof systems.

· Spoiler: Spoiler sunroofs are also known as tilt-and-

slide, and these sunroofs are a popular built-in factory option. The view through a spoiler sunroof is not as wide as that of a panoramic system, but they tilt to vent and slide open, so passenger headroom is not typically af-fected by their presence.

· Inbuilt: Inbuilt sunroofs are common in luxury vehicles. With an inbuilt sunroof, the panel slides open between the metal roof and interior headliner. That creates a full opening, but it takes away some headroom. Unlike imported models that use painted steel, American-made inbuilt sunroofs typi-cally use a glass slider, which provides a view whether the

sunroof is open or closed.

· Pop-up: Pop-up sunroofs are compatible with many vehicles, and they are among the least expensive options to install. Pop-up sunroofs are manually operated tilt-ing panels that typically are made of glass. Panels must be stored when removed, but they also can be tilted to provide a venting effect.
