It looks like summer’s heat is waning, and I’m looking forward to cooler nights and days. The days are getting short enough that I actually realized it was getting dark a little earlier… around 8 PM…not real early but just noticeable. There are other clues that the growing season is gradually winding down. The vegetables that take the longest to mature are fi nally providing their harvest. Of course sweet corn comes to mind and tomatoes, of course. Speaking of sweet corn, I went to my favorite farm stand to get some to prepare for some guests last weekend. When I walked up to the area where they normally have the corn for sale, there was none to be seen. I was stunned. I mean this is the place where I have been buying corn for years…they always have corn and usually the best because it is so fresh. I was disappointed but I went inside their main building since I also need a fruit pie. There, inside the air-conditioned shop was the pile of corn. “So, this is where you’re hiding the corn!” I exclaimed to the owner. “Are you kidding, I had to bring it in here…it’s WAY too hot outside for corn.” There you have it…someone who “gets it” about corn. It was a great reminder of why I make the drive there to buy corn when there are closer places to buy corn. I wish I could tell you the name of the place but it wouldn’t be fair to all the other farm stands selling excellent sweet corn. You’ll just have to fi nd one in your area that knows how to grow and keep the corn as fresh as possible. To give you an idea of what a fanatic I am about sweet corn, I brought that corn home and put it in a cooler and covered it with ice until it was time to cook it. Man, was that some good corn!
It is hard to imagine, after these lovely months of enjoying the outdoors and our gardens, that it will shortly be time for the growing season to end. Even as they say farewell to the waning season, real gardeners are working away on projects to make next year’s grow-ing season even better than the one just passing. There are bulbs to plant, perennials to divide and shrubs that might need to be relocated.
Of course, the warm days and cool nights of late summer and early fall make it sec-ond only to spring as a planting season. As a gardener, I look forward to this “bonus” plant-ing season. This is the time of year I like to look for bargains as the garden centers discount shrubs and perennials to move them out before winter. Often the plants I get during these fall sales don’t look like much with the leaves falling off as they go into dormancy, but as long as the roots and stems are in good shape, I’m willing to take a chance. Sometimes the bargains are so good that I buy plants that I have no plan for but the price is so good that I can’t pass them up. These plants will often have to spend the winter in their pots while I come up with a plan for them. I’m not afraid to winter-over perennials in pots or balled-in-burlap shrubs or trees. It’s all a question of knowing how to bring them through the harsh winter ahead.PRIVATE
First, scout out a sheltered location. We know that our prevailing wind comes from the west and north. The east facing wall of a garage, shed or even the house is a great spot. The building will block the cold, dry air that can dehydrate our wintering plants. I’ve got a 4’ high retaining wall on the western side of my vegetable garden that works well for this purpose. Parallel to the wall, I’ll dig a trench deep enough to set my potted and balled bargains into. If I happen to have a tree that is so tall that it sticks out above the wall, I’ll tip it on its side so the branches are below the top of the wall, protected from the wind. Then I’ll fi ll around the pots or root balls with loose soil and tamp it down well. Until winter sends my treasures into complete dormancy, I’ll keep an eye out that they don’t dry out, but with rain such a regular feature this time of year, that’s not of much concern. As early as I can in spring, I’ll fi nd places in my landscape for my fall bargains and plant them (adding bone meal, of course). So now, even though I take advantage of the fall planting season as much as I can, I know I can keep any leftovers safe through winter even if I run short of time this fall. Thanks for the read.
PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. The term Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI) refers to an injury to the complex set of nerves that control the muscles of the fi ngers, hand, arm, and shoulder. The Brachial Plexus can be damaged in a number of different ways including accidents involving high impact conditions but most brachial plexus injuries are sustained during birth from excessive force being applied to the baby’s neck and head resulting in stretch-ing and/or tearing of the Brachial Plexus nerves. Proper labor management would prevent a majority of these preventable ob-stetrical injuries. Please join us in raising awareness! (A)

Schoolhouse Now Open for VisitorsGLENVILLE – The Green Corners School in West Glenville is now open for the summer on Sunday afternoons from 1-5pm for visitors to explore a one-room schoolhouse museum. Visitors are welcome to see what a day in a one room school would have been like. Group tours are by appointment only, and admission is free. The quaint red brick schoolhouse is located on Potter Road, near the intersection with Green Corners Road Extension. It is the old-est known unaltered one-room schoolhouse in the Town of Glen-ville and still evokes the original atmosphere of open farms and stone fences. Also, any person or family that would like to help by volunteering for a Sunday afternoon is very welcome and needed. Please contact Ruth or Jim Long if you’d like a tour or would like to volunteer at 882-1026 or [email protected]. For more information about the school, go to: http://www.townofglenville.org/Public_Documents/GlenvilleNY_Historian/index. (A)

Robert S. Szymczak, D.D.S.
