ST. JOSEPH’S ATHLETIC CLUB
SCHENECTADY – St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, lo-cated at 600 State Street, (corner of State and Lafay-ette Streets), Schenectady, is hosting the St. Joseph’s Athletic Club at the 8:00am Mass at St. Joseph’s Church on Sunday, March 22nd. St. Joseph’s Athletic Club was established in 1929 as an outlet for young men on the Eastern Avenue hill, Sche-nectady. This social club sponsored teams in basket-ball, hockey, softball, bowl-ing and golf. New Year’s Eve and Mardi Gras parties were held upstairs in the former St. Mary’s School Hall and children’s Christmas parties were held at the Club. The club currently sponsors golf and bowling leagues. While the membership was as high as 140 and was composed of mostly parishioners of the former St. Mary’s Church, and those living on the “hill” area, it currently has ap-proximately 101 members, has changed throughout the years, with members located in several counties and states. Beginning in 2011, the members chose St. Joseph’s Church to be the site of this annual event
and will continue to con-sider St. Joseph’s as home. This will be the club’s 63rd Annual Corporate Mass, and will be dedicated to all past and present members of the Club. Following the Mass they will hold a Communion breakfast at their clubhouse on Eastern Avenue. The public is cordially invited. St. Joseph’s Church is handi-capped accessible and park-ing is available in the parking lot behind the Church. More information is available by calling 374-4466 x13.

ELECTRIC CITY IMMIGRANTS:
ITALIANS AND POLES OF SCHENECTADY,
1880-1930SCHENECTADY – Electric City Immigrants: Italians and Poles of Schenectady, 1880-1930, Presented by Robert Pascucci, Ph.D on Saturday, March 28, 2pm at Schenectady County His-torical Society, 32 Washing-ton Avenue, Schenectady. Admission: $5.00; Free for Schenectady County His-torical Society Members. Dr. Pascucci’s presentation will focus on the two largest im-migrant groups, Italian and Polish, that settled in Sche-nectady during its period of rapid economic growth that was fueled largely by Gen-eral Electric and the Ameri-can Locomotive Company. How these two immigrant groups adjusted to the city will be examined, as well as the impact that the new ar-rivals had on Schenectady. Dr. Robert Pascucci grew up in Troy, New York, and taught social studies at the high school level in the Capital District for many years, until taking the position of district supervisor of social studies in a suburban Philadelphia school district. Now retired, he lives in Pennsylvania. Dr. Pascucci did his under-graduate work at Siena Col-lege and his graduate work at Fordham University and at the University at Albany, where he received a Ph.D. in History. Dr. Pascucci wrote his doctoral dissertation on Electric City Immigrants: Ital-ians and Poles of Schenecta-dy, N.Y., 1880-1930. The snow is finally just about melted off the lawn and our long winter will begin to fade away. It is a little too early to do much with the lawn other than rake up the debris. While there may not be much we can do for the lawn this early, we can take care of the most important aspects of lawn care that is also the most overlooked; soil pH testing and lime applications. During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go figure. I guess it sounds too “complicated and scientific” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil and one test tube. The benefits of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefits of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in formation of plant fiber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important. Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidification of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidification occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7). Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have. Another benefit of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fills in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. pH test kits are one of the best bargains going. Thanks for the read.

ELIMINATE AUTO ODORS
(NAPS)—When the smells of mud, slush, cigarettes, pets, food spills and so on linger in your car, you can drive them away if you know a few facts and hints.
While common air freshen-ers use perfumes to try to cover up the smell, they pro-vide only temporary relief that doesn’t often cover the entire vehicle. To truly elimi-nate odor, you have to con-trol the cause.
To that end, there’s an odor eliminator that uses ClO2 technology. It controls odor-causing bacteria, eliminat-
ing even the foulest smells quickly and permanently.
The EPA-registered, patent-ed technology of Star brite Auto Odor Eliminator is easy to use. Its deep-penetrating vapor gets into all areas of your car’s interior—under seats, into the upholstery and throughout the venti-lation system—and works within hours. It’s also a great way to remove odors from RVs or boats that have been in seasonal storage.
Once you’ve eliminated bad odors, keep your car smelling sweet: Vacuum it whenever you wash it; make sure there are no food wrap-pers, cigarette butts or dirty clothes lying around; and don’t let anyone smoke in it.
Few drivers will be fortu-nate enough to go their entire driving lives without encountering at least one fl at tire. Flat tires range from the inconvenient fl ats, which may interrupt a road trip or make drivers late for work or an appointment, to more dangerous blowouts, which can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and anyone else on the road when the tire gives out.
But as inconvenient or dan-gerous as fl ats or blowouts can be, they also can be pre-vented more often than not. Tires often produce warning signs that a fl at or blowout
is about to emerge, so driv-ers who want to avoid such unfortunate developments can inspect their tires for the following signs.
• Varying wear: Tires should exhibit the same type of wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may diff er, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes for the back tires. Un-even tread on tires indicates that the tire with more wear could be about to go out.
• Worn tread: Even drivers who know little about cars can typically recognize when tire tread has worn down to
the point where the tire is a safety risk. But drivers who are unsure can employ the quarter test. Insert a quar-ter into the tread of the tire, with George Washington’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ fi rst president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires.
• Low pressure: Drivers who do not routinely check their tire pressure are more likely to endure a fl at or blowout than those who regularly make sure their tires are at the manufacturer-recom-mended pressure, which can
be found in a vehicle owner’s manual or by calling the tire manufacturer or visiting their website. An underinfl ated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blowout. In addition, poorly infl ated tires force engines to work harder, which negatively aff ects a car’s fuel effi ciency.
• Vibration: A car that vi-brates excessively may do so because tires are damaged. Poor suspension is another cause of excessive vibration. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their mechanic for an inspec-tion.
• Physical damage to the
tire: Sometimes tires exhibit
physical damage like bulges
or cuts, and such signs could
mean a fl at tire or blowout is
just around the corner. Tires
that exhibit such physical
damage need to be replaced
immediately.
Flat tires and blowouts can
prove both scary and incon-
venient. Drivers who want to
avoid such problems should
routinely inspect their tires
for indicators that a fl at or
blowout is likely to occur.

DEFEATING SALT DAMAGE
(NAPS)—Corrosive road salt and brine on the roads can cause rust and corrosion to your car, truck, motorcycle or trailer—but there are steps you can take to protect your vehicle. Try these three tricks:1. Wash and wax your car and then use sealant to keep the wax on the paint.2. Seal the undercarriage, too.3. Clean your car off with a product engineered to eliminate salt deposits from all surfaces, yet still be easy to use. One such is a formula originally developed to protect and preserve fi shing and dive gear on boats that are constantly exposed to the ravages of salt water, and includes highly eff ective salt-removing
components and protective PTEF polymers. After the salt and brine have been eliminated, these polymers bond to the treated surface to act as a barrier against future deposits. Called Salt Off with PTEF, it’s made by Star brite. It won’t harm fi berglass, plastic, rubber, paint or polished metals and is available as a ready-to-use 22-oz. sprayer and as a concentrate in 32-oz. and gallon containers.

Have you ever wondered what the effects of all the time spent on digi-tal devices like smart phones, tablets, and computers can have on your eyes? Many people experience eye strain after spending time on one of these devices, but the biggest impact is damage from blue light ex-posure. Blue light is the most intense form of light visible to the hu-man eye and has the highest energy wavelength. This energy is able to penetrate all the way to the back of the eye, through the eyes’ natural filters, and unlike eye strain, the effects are cumulative - creating the po-tential for permanent eye damage. For example, it has been determined that exposure to blue light increases your risk of age related macular degeneration, and can cause significant damage to retinal cells. Some evidence even suggests that prolonged exposure to blue light may re-duce the retinas’ sensitivity to color. Children are especially at risk for the negative effects of blue light exposure. Children’s eyes are still de-veloping, and they don’t yet have the protective pigments in their eyes to help filter out some of the harmful blue light. That’s why, just like UV radiation, most blue light exposure occurs before a child is 18 years old.The first thing you can do to protect yourself and your children from eye damage caused by blue light, is to try to limit or cut back on the amount of time spent on digital devices. Secondly, you should schedule an annual eye exam to find out if you are at risk for over-exposure to blue light diseases, including macular degeneration. Finally, there are now eyeglass lenses that filter out blue light. The lenses have little to no tint and can help to minimize the direct blue light exposure that a person gets throughout the day. Most people who have these lenses no-ticed an immediate increase in eye comfort because of the improved contrast, which relaxes the eye.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing prob-lem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stut-ter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other librar-ies that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmu-dez.org.
