Transcript of The Weekly 5-18-2014

This week we observe the feast of the martyrs of Sudan and begin responding to a call to prayer for South Sudan from our Presiding Bishop, who asks us to pray, study, give, and act for South Sudan until the situation is resolved. See www.episcopalchurch.org/sudan. The martyrs committed their lives to follow Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life. They saw injustice and evil in the world and were not content to let it be. In their journey with Jesus they became who they were created to be; they found wholeness and peace. We too are called to follow Jesus,

and in that following seek and find our wholeness. We must awaken in ourselves that longing for wholeness. We fulfill that longing by spending time in relationship with God through prayer. I never thought that God would call me to be a missionary in Africa, and I was equally surprised and uncertain when God called me to youth ministry. In walking with all of you, I have discerned another calling, and now I depart richer in my spirit for the way God forms us as we walk together.

AnnouncementsWednesday: Join us for Bible study from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. in Grant Hall as we explore Jesus’ life in a chronological study of the Gospels.

Wednesday: The Friends of St. Benedict will meet in the library from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for study and prayer. Our aim is to integrate the wisdom of monastic life and spiritual theology into our everyday lives as Christians. We meet the third Wednesday of every month, and all are welcome.

The Feast of the Ascension—Mark your calendar and plan to attend an Ascension Day service, at noon or 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 29.

Bonhoeffer’s Life Together—Join the congregation-wide reading of this engaging and non-scholarly book. Conversations on Chapter One will be held on June 1 and June 21. Copies are available in the church and the office for $10.

The next vestry meeting will be held Wednesday, May 28, at 1:30 p.m. in the library. If you are interested, feel free to attend.

Healthy Saints hikes in May—First, enjoy a beach hike on Memorial Day (Monday, May 26, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.) from Asilomar to The Inn at Spanish Bay. The easy hike begins on sand and finishes on a planked walkway. Then on Saturday, May 31, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. we’ll hike the Earl Moser/Madrone Loop at Jack’s Peak. This is an easy two-mile walk through pine forest, meadow, ravine, and a wide grassy path.

Please contact Cynthia Spencer at 520-260-5158 or [email protected] if you are interested. And bring a friend!

Baptism—If you are interested in being baptized at the Feast of Pentecost (June 8), please contact the rector.

Santa Lucia Kids Camp: A day camp for children ages four to thirteen will be held June 23–25 and again July 14–16 at Santa Lucia Campground. The cost is $15 per day, with discounts for multiple children from one family. For information and registration, please contact camp director Kirsten Stember at [email protected] or 831-601-0472.

Bach to the Future 2014—In its tenth anniversary year, Bach to the Future offers two one-week sessions (July 21to 25 or July 28 to August 1) featuring singing, music-making, drawing, dancing, and interactive presentations by singers and instrumentalists from the Carmel Bach Festival.
