This tree is the clan of Eric Warburton of The Lancashire Group. It is taken from Eric’s own family tree which I have modified to focus

on the Warburtons and match the style of other trees. Eric is from a branch of the family who emigrated to Massachusetts.

First Generation

1. William Warburton.

William’s first wife is assumed to be Ann as the only wife of William buried at Bury in the 10 yearsbefore his second marriage was named Ann.

There were two mariages of a William and Ann at Bury in the 20 years before Ann died, These wereto Ann Taylor in 1796, and Ann Beckett in 1799. Ann Taylor is the most likely because the only childof William and Ann who was baptised in the relevant period was born before the second marriage,and had an abode of Bury which is the same as Ann’s on her burial. Furthermore the William whomarried Ann Taylor was a soldier, while the William who married Ann Beckett was a weaver. AsWilliam was subsequently described as a dyer it seems more likely an ex-soldier would train as adyer than someone who was already skilled as a weaver.

The baptisms of his children would suggest he first lived in Elton which was his abode on thebaptisms of Jonathan and the first Richard. Between September 1804 and November 1805 hemoved to Rochdale, which was his abode on the baptisms of Joseph, and a second Richard, whichstill took place at Bury. Walter was baptised at Edenfield with an abode of Shuttleworth suggestingWilliam had moved back to the Ramsbottom area by then.

Walter is shown to belong to the same family by his presence in the 1891 and 1901 censuses livingwith Mathew Dilworth, whose wife Elizabeth was the daughter of his sister Harriet. Harriet’s ownbaptism is confusing as it took place when she was 20 years old, at Bury, but with an abode ofSpotland in Rochdale.

George and William are assumed to belong to the family because their parents, and father’soccupation are the same, though they have now moved again to Oxhey (it is not clear exactlywhere this is). Also on George’s marriage is father is William, a dyer. However it must be noted thetif the burial and age at death for Mary in 1829 are correct she would be rather old at 49 whenWilliam was born.

On 2 Feb 1796 William first married Ann Taylor in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire. William was a soldierof the parish, Ann a spinster of the parish. Ann died in Bury, Lancashire, on 9 May 1801. She wasburied in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire, on 11 May 1801.

They had one child:i. Mary Warburton. Mary Bwas born in Bury, Lancashire, on 31 Aug 1799. She was

christened in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire, on 6 Oct 1799.

On 22 Mar 1802 William second married Mary Yates in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire. William was a

widower of the parish, Mary a spinster of the parish. John Warburton was a witness. Mary Bwasborn abt 1774. Mary died in Holcombe, Lancashire, in 1829. She was buried in Bury, St Mary,Lancashire, on 8 Jan 1829.

This is a probable burial for Mary who was described as the wife of William, aged 55 on her burialrecord.

v. Harriet Warburton. Harriet Bwas born in Spotland, Rochdale, Lancashire, on 20 Jan1810. She was christened in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire, on 2 May 1830.

Curiously Harriet was baptised aged 20 when she was described as the daughter ofWilliam amd Mary. William is a dyer from Spotland.

On 27 May 1831 when Harriet was 21, she married Richard Coop in Bury, St Mary,Lancashire. Harriet and Richard had seven sons and four daughters. One daughter,Elizabeth Alice, married Matthew Dilworth and her Uncle Walter is living with them in1891 and 1901. Richard Bwas born in Bury, Lancashire, abt 1810.

William’s father is described as a dyer from Oxhey on his baptism. No census entry, orlikely burial record, has been found for William.

Jonathan (51) is an agricultural labourer living at Castleton Moor with Rachel (45), Jeremiah(20) a silk hat finisher, Elizabeth (17) a cotton reeler, Edward (13) a doffer, and Mary A (8). ■Census for Castleton, Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1861. Jonathan (64) is a railway labourer living inBlue Pits with Rachel (54), Elizabeth (27) a cotton winder, and Mary A (18) a cotton winder. ■Census in 1871. Jonathan’s death was registered in 1q 1872 Rochdale 8e 9. His age is given as 72 on both hisdeath registration and his burial record, but based on his date of birth it should be 69. His age isvariable in the census records.

On 10 May 1829 when Jonathan was 26, he first married Rachel Conner in Bury, St Mary,Lancashire. Jonathan was a printer and batchelor, Rachel a spinster. Witnesses were siblingsRichard and Harriet Warburton. Rachel Bwas born in Clitheroe, Lancashire, abt 1806. Rachel diedin Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1868. She was buried in Castleton Moor, St Martin, Lancashire, on 29Mar 1868.

Rachel’s death was registered in 1q 1868 Rochdale 8e 12, aged 63.

In 1864 when Mary A was 22, she married James Wrigley in Rochdale RegisterOffice or Registrar Attended, Lancashire. The marriage was registered in 3q 1864Rochdale 8e 76.

In 1869 when Jonathan was 66, he second married Martha Stott in Rochdale Register Office or

Registrar Attended, Lancashire. The marriage was registered in 1q 1869 Rochdale 8e 123. MarthaBwas born in Littleborough, Lancashire, abt 1809. Martha died in Bury, Lancashire, in 1881. Shewas buried in Castleton Moor, St Martin, Lancashire, on 19 May 1881.

3. Joseph Warburton (William1). Joseph Bwas born in Rochdale, Lancashire, on 28 Nov 1805. Hewas christened in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire, on 26 Jan 1806. ■ Census for Elton, Lancashire, in1841. Joseph (35) is a cotton printer living at Dairy Field with Alice (35), Selina (13) a cotton winder,Alice (11) a cotton spinner, Mary (9), Pamela (7), Lucy (5), Elizabeth (2), and Taylor (1). ■ Censusfor Elton, Lancashire, in 1851. Joseph (45) is a calico block printer living at Higher Woodhill withAlice (45), Selina (22) a cotton reeler, Mary (18) a throstle spinner, Pamela (16) a cotton reeler, Lucy(13) a throstle spinner, Elizabeth (11), and Taylor (9). Joseph died in Chicopee, Hampden Co,Massachusetts, on 30 Dec 1882.

Joseph emigrated to Massachusetts but the date is unknown. He did not travel with his four childrenin 1863, and has not been found in the1861 census when the four children are living in the familyhome. He may already have been in America.

On 25 Jun 1827 when Joseph was 21, he first married Alice Townson in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire.Joseph was a calico printer and batchelor, Alice was a spinster. Witness was Richard Warburton.Alice Bwas born in Summerseat, Lancashire, on 1 Mar 1806. She was christened in Bury, St Mary,Lancashire, on 25 May 1806. Alice died in Elton, Lancashire, in 1854.

Alice was the daughter of John and Ann nee Smith. Her death was registered in 2 q 1854 Bury 8c245, aged 48 on LancashireBMD.

They had the following children:i. Selina Warburton. Selina Bwas born in Chatterton, Lancashire, abt 1829. Selina died

in Chicopee, Hampden Co, Massachusetts, on 27 Apr 1881.

Selina arrived in New York on the Hecla on August 10th 1863 with her siblings Taylor,Elizabeth, and Lucy, and Taylor's bride Alice. She lived in Chicopee, Hampden, MA.

On 24 Nov 1864 when Selina was 35, she first married William Banks in Chicopee,Hampden Co, Massachusetts. William Bwas born in England abt 1830. William died inChicopee, Hampden Co, Massachusetts, on 23 May 1868.

William's parents were Robert and Ann nee Sharp.

On 10 Jun 1876 when Selina was 47, she second married Charles Walmsley inChicopee, Hampden Co, Massachusetts. Charles Bwas born in England abt 1815.Charles died in Chicopee, Hampden Co, Massachusetts, on 1 Sep 1891.

Charles was the son of John and Mary nee Parks.ii. Alice Warburton. Alice Bwas born abt 1830.

Alice is only known from her presence in the 1841 census. She is not present in 1851but there is no matching marriage or death registration.

iii. Mary Warburton. Mary Bwas born in Holcombe, Lancashire, abt 1833.

Mary has not been researched after 1851.iv. Pamela Warburton. Pamela Bwas born in Irwell Springs, Lancashire, abt 1835.

In 1859 when Pamela was 24, she married Robert Purcell in Bury Register Office orRegistrar attended, Lancashire. The marriage was registered in 2q 1859 Bury 8c 489.Pamela and Robert had a son.

v. Lucy Warburton. Lucy Bwas born in Whitefield, Lancashire, abt 1838. Lucy died inChicopee, Hampden Co, Massachusetts, on 9 Nov 1886.

Lucy's birth registration and baptism have not been found. She arrived in New York onthe Hecla on August 10th 1863 with her siblings Taylor, Elizabeth, and Sabina, andTaylor's bride Alice. She lived in Chicopee, Massachusetts.

On 2 Jan 1869 when Lucy was 31, she married George Warburton in Agawam,Hampden, Massachusetts. George Bwas born in Lymm, Cheshire, in 1830. He waschristened in Warringon, St Elphin, Lancashire, on 13 Jun 1830.

George is from the Houghton Clan. It appears that his marriage to Lucy was bigamous

as he had left a wife and 5 children in Lymm, Cheshire, that last of them born in 1868.It is the same George because he names his parents on his marriage to Lucy.

vi. Elizabeth Warburton. Elizabeth died in Chicopee, Hampden Co, Massachusetts, on18 Jan 1902. Elizabeth Bwas born in Whitefield, Lancashire, in 1839.

Elizabeth’s place of birth is given as Handforth Mill in 1851, and Whitefield in 1861.She arrived in New York on the Hecla on August 10th 1863 with her siblings Taylor,Selina, and Lucy, and Taylor's bride Alice. She lived in Chicopee, Hampden, MA.

9 vii. Taylor Warburton (1841-1878)

On 27 Oct 1867 when Joseph was 61, he second married Rosanna (Rose Ann) Daily inSpringfield, Hampden Co, Massachusetts. Rosanna (Rose Ann) Bwas born in Ireland abt 1820.

Rosanna's parents were William and Mary.

4. Richard Warburton (William1). Richard Bwas born in Spotland, Rochdale, Lancashire, on 10 Mar1808. Richard’s death was probably that registered in 1q 1886 Blackburn 8e 331, aged 77.

On 23 Jul 1828 when Richard was 20, he married Susannah Bentley in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire.Richard was a master dyer and batchelor, Susy was a spinster. Witness was Joseph Warburton.Susannah Bwas born in Altham, Lancashire, on 29 Feb 1808. She was christened in Altham, StJames, Lanashire, on 10 Mar 1808. Susannah died in Accrington, Lancashire, in Nov 1872. Shewas buried in Altham, St James, Lanashire, on 28 Nov 1872.

Susannah was the daughter of John and Margaret nee Pilkington. She died aged 64 and was buriedin grave 32. Her death was registered in 4q 1872 Haslingden 8e 118.

On 29 Aug 1852 when Mary Ann was 22, she married Abraham Kay in Bury, St Mary,Lancashire. Mary and Abraham had a son and four daughters. Abraham Bwas born inTottington, Lancashire, in 1827. He was christened in Holcombe, Lancashire, on 22Apr 1827. Abraham died in Bury, Lancashire, in 1906.

Abraham was the son of Richard and Maria nee Hay.iii. Amos Warburton. Amos Bwas born in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, in 1835. Amos died

in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, in 1838. He was buried in Holcombe, Emmanuel Chapel,Lancashire, on 15 Apr 1838. He was christened in Holcombe, Emmanuel Chapel,Lancashire, on 4 Oct 1835.

Amos's father was a printer, abode Oxhey on his baptism record. His abode wasStubbins, and age 2 on his burial record.

Ambrose died in Accrington, Lancashire, in 1853. He was buried in Christ Church,Accrington, Lancashire, on 10 Jul 1853.

On 5 Sep 1863 when James was 20, he married Hannah Jane Noble in Accrington,Lancashire. Hannah Jane Bwas born in Accrington, Lancashire, in 1841. She waschristened in Accrington, Lancashire, on 16 May 1841. Hannah Jane died inHaslingden, Lancashire, in 1906.

Hannah was the daughter of Mark and Mary. her birth was registerd in 2q 1841Haslingden 21 445. Her death was registered in 1q 1906 Haslingden 8e 89, aged 57(this should be 65 but there is no other Hannah Jane’s death registered).

vii. John Warburton. John Bwas born in Stubbins, Ramsbottom, Lancashire, in 1845. ■Census for Accrington, Lancashire, in 1881. John (37) is a railway goods guard livingat 5 Peter Street with Elizabeth A Barnes (36) housekeeper and mistress, and herchildren Betsy Ann (6), John (4), and Fred (2). John is described as married. ■Census for Accrington, Lancashire, in 1891. John (45) is a railway guard living at 48Portland Street with wife Elizabeth A B (46), Betsy A B (15) a cotton weaver, John B(13) a printworks labourer, Fred B (12) a cotton mill warehouseman, James W B (9),Thomas C B (7), and Susan B (4). ■ Census for Accrington, Lancashire, in 1901.John (46) is a railway goods guard living at 42 Frederick Street with wife Elizabeth A(56) Betsy Ann Barnes (25) a cotton weaver, Fred Barnes (22) a railway shunter,James W Barnes (19) a printworks labourer, Thos C W Barnes a printworks labourer,and Susan Barnes a cotton weaver. The children are described as sons anddaughters. ■ Census for Accrington, Lancashire, in 1911. John (64) is a porter livingat 46 Richmond Street with Elizabeth Ann (65), and daughter Susan Barnes (24) acotton weaver. John and Elizabeth have been married 20 years and had 7 children, 6living, though the children are aged 24 and upwards. John died in 1917.

It would seem that some if not all the seven children born to Elizabeth Barnes wereJohn’s. They were living together before the last four were born. A couple usedWarburton as a middle name. However John and Elizabeth didn’t marry until after theywere all born and they seem to have maintained the Barnes surname.

A clue may be that John described himself as married in 1881. Maybe he married inthe early 1870s and was estranged but not free to remarry until 1889. The onlymarriage in Accrington during that time was to Susannah Coupe in 1873.

John’s death was registered in 4q 1917 Haslingden 8e 150, aged 72.

In 1889 when John was 44, he married Elizabeth Ann Barnes in Bolton, Lancashire.The marriage was registered in 3q 1889 Bolton 8c 514. Elizabeth Ann Bwas born inHaslingden, Lancashire, abt 1845. Elizabeth Ann died in 1915.

It is Matthew’s wife Elizabeth who is Walter’s niece. ■ Census forRamsbottom, Lancashire, in 1901. Walter (82) is a widowed stone waller lodging at 16 Union Streetwith Matthew Dilworth and his family.

Walter’s father is described as a crofter from Shuttleworth on his baptism.

No census entries have been found for Walter in 1871 or 1881, and no matching death registrationhas been found.

On 31 Dec 1838 when Walter was 23, he married Alice Greenhalgh in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire.The marriage was registered in 4q 1838 Bury 21 161. Alice Bwas born in Tottington, Lancashire, abt1813.

Alice was the daughter of Robert. Her death registration has not been found.

They had one child:i. Robert Warburton. Robert Bwas born in Tottington, Lancashire, in 1839. He was

christened in Holcombe, Lancashire, on 14 Jul 1839.

There is no birth registration evident for Robert, and no census entry or deathregistration can be found for him after 1861.

6. George Warburton (William1). George Bwas born in Bury, Lancashire, in 1818. He waschristened in Holcombe, Emmanuel Chapel, Lancashire, on 2 Mar 1818. ■ Census for TottingtonLower End, Lancashire, in 1861. George (43) is a cotton card loom grinder living in Back BoltonStreet with Sarah (45) a cotton weaver, John (17) and Benjamin (15) also cotton weavers, andwidowed mother-in-law Alice Haworth (73). George died in 1864.

George’s father is described as a crofter from Oxhey on his baptism. He is missing from censusesbefore 1861. His death was registered in 4q 1864 Bury 8c 233 0r 275. LancashireBMD gives hisage at death as 45, district Holcombe.

On 26 Dec 1840 when George was 22, he married Sarah Haworth in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire.George was a printer from Bury, father William, a dyer. Sarah was also from Bury, father George, aweaver. Sarah Bwas born in Bury, Lancashire, abt 1816. ■ Census for Tottington Lower End,Lancashire, in 1871. Sarah (55) is a widowed weaver living at 31 Back Bolton Street with sons John(26), and Benjamin (22) weavers, mother Alice Haworth (85), and lodger Nancy Wolstenholm (3). ■Census for Tottington Lower End, Lancashire, in 1881. Sarah has not been found in censuses after 1881. She is possibly the Sarah whose death wasregistered in 4q 1881 Bury 8c 282, age 64. LancashireBMD has the district as Holcombe.

They had the following children:i. James Warburton. James Bwas born in Holcombe, Lancashire, in 1841. James died

in Holcombe, Lancashire, in 1842.

James’s birth was registered in 1841, one of 4 in Bury that year. The district isHolcombe, and mother’s maiden name Haworth on Lancashire BMD. His death wasregistered in 1q 1842 Bury 21 242, age 0, district Holcombe on Lancashire BMD.

ii. John Warburton. John Bwas born in Holcombe, Lancashire, in 1843.

John’s birth was registered in either 2q 1843 Bury 21 318 or 4q 1843 Bury 21 290.LancashireBMD has mother’s maiden name Howarth, district Holcombe. He has notbeen foud in censuses after 1881. His death is possibly that registered in 3q 1897Bury 8c 329, aged 54. LanacashireBMD gives the district as Ramsbottom.
