Another sunny and windy day in Volterra has passed by. You have met new people and played funny weird games with your chairs. You have also experienced what hard work really means, discussing your ideas during Committee Work and writing your very first resolution. Impressive, isn't it?Wandering through the campus looking for our laptop charger or just for the next rumor, we immediately noticed that the EYP magic had already filled your hearts. You all looked fabolous in your stunning costumes during the GleEYP night. With your well prepared choreographies you left us astonished. It's 6.00 am and everyone is asleep, no one is awake, no one except for us, your dear editors. Tomorrow, I mean TODAY, is going to be a hard day, you'll have to finish your resolution and be ready for GA. You may think this is the most boring part of the Session, but believe us you're going to enjoy it as much as you did with your teambuilding.Time for another coffee, enjoy your last few hours in your warm beds, because you totally deserved some rest.

The Editors of the Session.

Getting to know EYPOur delegates have just reached Volterra and when they arrived most of them were quite apprehensive and some even scared. And now? What do they think about EYP? How did they experience their first day in this crazy and fantastic association?

Sara – AFET Sara doesn’t really like animation, but she unexpectedly enjoyed teambuilding! Why is that? Probably thanks to her great chairs. When she arrived Sara was a very shy girl and she was afraid of what was going to happen, of who she was going to meet…. But in a few hours she started feeling really part of the great EYP-Family.

Gianmarco – DEVEGianmarco had already heard about EYP sessions when he arrived on Friday, and therefore he was not really surprised of his day. However, his expectations met with reality and he had a lot of fun! The moment he liked the most was the GleEYP Night when he had to present his delegation, and let’s say it, it was a great one. When I told him to imagine himself being in jail 10 years from now and why he probably ended up in prison, he told me he would be there because of his Glee’s party costume!

Francesco – LIBEWhy has Francesco joined the delegation from Cosenza? Actually because he is the best in English of his school! Anyway, he liked his day and he particularly had a lot of fun at the GleEYP party (a real success, wasn’t it?). He also told me that should he end up in prison ten years from now, it would probably be because of a hold-up!

Chiara – ENVI The thing that surprised Chiara the most during her first day in Volterra? No doubt, the teambuilding! These strange activities and games can make EYP look really weird but actually when you’ve done them and when the ice is broken, that’s the moment when you understand that EYP is not only about being workaholic, but also about meeting people and having fun!

3

Page 4: The Voldemorterra Chronicles

Giulia – LIBEBefore entering EYP, Giulia was part of another association: the Model United Nations. I asked her to compare them and she answered that the two are almost too different to compare. But for one thing, EYP is far funnier and the people she has met here are definitely more open-minded. Therefore she was really glad to be part of this session, and all her apprehension is already gone.

Erika – EMPL Erika is a delegate of EMPL and she actually came here to meet new people and discover what EYP was about. The best moment of her day was when she met her committee. Her committee members are very kind, funny and interesting and her two chairs are so cool! She thinks she might go to prison one day because she got completely crazy during teambuilding and started doing lots of very silly things!

Italy, according to themComing to another country can sometimes be unsettling...let's see how our foreign officials faced it!

I was wandering around during GleEYP Night when a question suddenly popped up in my mind… As an Italian, I know what to expect from my compatriots. But, say, I’m a foreigner EYPer, I decided I wanted to come here badly and, unexpectedly I got selected and eventually landed in this weird country. What would I expect to find? Let’s ask our foreign officials their opinion about Volterra, Italy and these crazy Italians!

MARIO PACAL (AT)Mario is 21 and comes from Austria. He’s been in EYP since 2009 and this experience totally was a “life changing” one. Andrea Stagni (President of EYP Italy, by the way) met him on a previous forum and asked Mario to apply, and so he did! He told me he would definitely move to Italy, just for one reason…our food! Actually, I stopped him right during the Italian Village, so he may have been under the influence of Italian cuisine. He told me he didn’t have real expectations about the Tuscan scenery, he has seen Volterra just by night because of his delay during arrival and he has not been able to see much of our landscapes, but his trip from Pontedera to Volterra reminded him of his Austria, just more Mediterranean.

PANAGHIOTIS KALAIDOPOULOS (GR)Panaghiotis is a smart and nice guy from Greece and he is 19. He chose to come to Italy because he thinks it is lovely. He expected the Italian National Conferences to be different from the Greek ones and he really appreciated when he discovered the arrangement was almost the same! He did have some expectations about Italians but, luckily, it seems he is appreciating the people he met! He loves Volterra and he said he could not complain. He would also like to come here for some time, e.g. for a master, in order to connect deeply with the people he found here, the country and the language (his knowledge of Italian is quite impressive, too!).

Page 6: The Voldemorterra Chronicles

LUCA WARTNA (NL)First of all, guys, we have to make something clear…our dear Luca is actually a nice blonde girl! In Holland, her name is considered feminine because of the final A… Something quite obvious, but we like to make things different here! She chose to come to Italy because she loves our country: food, landscapes and the friendliness of people… She told me she loved staying in Rome last summer, the way we live here, wandering around town and enjoying caffè al banco. She left her heart there! She expected friendliness, but even some problems with the language, because she knew Italians don’t speak English, but she managed to arrive alive, so either she is really able to communicate or our compatriots made use of the thing we are most famous for (apart from food): gestures! She hoped to find tasty food, she likes cheese and she definitely enjoyed the Italian village. She tried every kind of cheese she could find in the room and each one was delicious! The only thing she is a bit disappointed by is weather: she thought Italy was warmer than her country, but this has not happened yet…sorry for this! She loves the landscape, those small little houses spread all over the landscapes; she would really love to live here, in a small village, for like half an year or so to learn Italian. But not any longer, because she feels more like a city girl and Italian cities are nice to visit but not to live into.

Behind the code

Do you think the dress code is just a rule and as such should be respected or is it a way to make it clear that you value what you are doing?Gabrielle: “I always dress nicely.”Tiago: “I like specific dress codes and I like the fact they exist. But do not misinterpret me – in no way do I long for a plain-format universe and I certainly appreciate that we all are our own, individual selves.Still, there are circumstances when we should all be on the same page, especially formal situations. In EYP, we have a series of more-or-less specific dress codes that we particularly insist on for all people attending the General Assembly. I mean… you can’t show up at a formal, professional event wearing a pair of running shoes – doing so would be much more than simply disrespecting a rule, it would be disrespecting all others who (rightly) choose to observe it.Now, when it comes to the matter of dress codes being potentially standardising or reductive of the individuals’ freedom to express themselves, I don’t think that’s necessarily true. In fact – and this I find truly interesting –, even if observing a very strict dress code (and there are dress codes so much stricter than those of the normal, everyday professional world), some people actually manage to create a style that is typically theirs. Something others will automatically associate with them. And for that you need to take the time – not too long, a few minutes a day will do. Ultimately, it's not about breaking the rules; it's about bending them. And once you get that, a dress code won't be a limitation anymore. In fact, it can even be a new start.”Seba: “Especially in EYP, dress code has a special importance because, being the whole session a formative experience, some sort of microcosm, we have the chance to face an extremely unordinary and (sometimes) strict dress code. This teaches us how crucial it is in some moments of our life to adhere to dress codes: being a social convention, you risk to be casted out of the exact same social context you are trying to be part of. Which is why respecting the dress code might be interpreted as a sign of maturity and wit. You might obviously decide not to respect it: life and the world in general is made of rules and it is up to us to decide how and when to infringe them.”

“Dress codes are written and, more often, unwritten rules with regards to clothing. Clothing, like other aspects of human physical appearance has a social significance, with different rules and expectations being valid depending on circumstance and occasion”. That’s the definition of dress code. But is a dress code, especially in EYP, just a set of rules?

11

Page 12: The Voldemorterra Chronicles

Do you think clothing is just appearance or is it an expression of your personality?Gabrielle: “I don’t have a personality, I have several.”Tiago: “Clothing is indeed an expression of one’s personality, even if specific dress codes require specific garments (in a working context, especially a man can’t really work their way around a suit). What we can do, though, is take the time to find the accessories and the specificities that suit us best. For instance, I would never wear a printed tie, because I think they don’t look good on me. In other words: it’s important that we take the time to always add our own personal touch to an outfit… almost like a signature, something that is representative of our style, our way of living, maybe even our beliefs. Because, as we all know, first impressions count the most – even before the first words are spoken, we judge people by the way they present themselves and, as open-minded as we can declare ourselves to be, it’s always hard to change our minds once they’re set on certain impressions.”Seba: ”Clothing is both appearance and expression of personality. The balance between the two is different for each and every one of us according to their nature.Personally I have two dress codes, and two only: either suit and tie or t-shirt, trousers, sweatshirt and combat boots.”

Meet the Press TeamOlimpia Cutinelli-RendinaI had the pleasure to interview my dear colleague Olimpia -18 years old, lives in France- the journo who defined herself as “resolute “ and I realized how imaginative she is..Indeed, my question was which had been her first impression about me and she replied with a special spontaneity that, at first glance (clearly JUST at first glance) I made her think about Bella Swan, because of my dark hair and pale skin (I obviously felt flattered!).After having added that she loved our charming editors from the first time she saw them, she answered to my second question: “if this press team were a movie, which movie would it be?”.She answered that we are “Peter Pan”, as in every journo there’s a kid (who is anxious to express himself) during this EYP session, that is our Neverland.

by Giulia DaverioGiulia DaverioSo, what was your worst gaff during a session? "Well… At Lucca National Session, in 2011, I went on the stage to have a speech and I stumbled. I felt really stupid and everyone was laughing…

Which is the least funny joke you have heard during the session? No doubt about that: “The theme of this session is going to be Harry Potter”.

Who do you think is the hottest boy/girl of the session?Gianmarco Battistini, our great Editor!

by Olimpia Cutinelli-Rendina

Fabrizio lives in Turin and he really cares about pollution and about keeping the environment safe, because he is such a big-hearted man! He told me he has never kissed a cat, because he has never felt like a zoophiliac. Not until now, at least… He even knows some Greek letters, but he does not always succeed in combining them! Moreover, as you all know, during the session, all of us will be wizards; every respectable wizard has its own wand, so I asked him where he plans to place it at the end of this amazing experience. He preferred not to answer, and I still don’t get why…

Which is your favorite part of your body?"Definitely the eyes. The reason is just because they’re blue and since they’re special, they’re beautiful."

What was your first impression about me?"I immediately thought of you as a very lovely and lively person, and actually after having known you I can say that I wasn’t that wrong."

What is your nickname, and why?"Just Edo, there’s no reason. Just to shorten it."

by Fabrizio Zamparelli

Which Harry Potter character could have been your long lost twin, and why?"McGonagall, definitely. Because she’s classy and modest.”

Imagine you being in jail, 10 years from now. Why would you be in there? “I would have been stealing letters from mailboxes, steam opening them just to read them, and I would have been caught during the process of returning the letters.”

If you would be me, what would you ask yourself ?“Why am I always late?”

What’s your favourite childhood hero, Luca?(One can be a child up until 99, so they don’t necessarily have to be a stupid cartoon…)“Well, it may sound stupid, but it’s my little brother, Jamie…” How sweet…

A funny fact about yourself ?“I’ve once lived in a three-floor tree house!” The forest Dutch!

Do you happen to have any nicknames and, if yes, why?(I’ll try to give you the answer as plain and coherent as possible.) “I was the only one not to have one, so, after a long evening of much Dutch drinking, they decided to call me ‘Xena’, mainly because I’m tough”.Regarding her second one, “Prince Harry”, uh… “Still, my best friend back then didn’t like ‘Xena’, so we needed a change…” Schematically and considering that Luca’s dog’s called “Barry”, we get “Luca” > “Lu” > “’Lu Biscuits’” > “’Prince Harry ‘Lu Biscuits’ special edition” > “Prince Harry”, ecco! At least “Harry” rhymes with “Barry”

Ginny – playing the role of the beautiful delegate Cecilia, 16 years old, from Magenta – controverts the rumours about her contention with Hermione saying that her brother’s girlfriend is actually “a positive model” for her and she is not jealous of Hermione and Harry spending a lot of time together, as they are close friends since childhood. She would rather focus on her work and her career at the Ministry of Magic.Anyway we think her problem with Harry is not really over: in fact, she looked a bit nervous when she declared that she is going to bleach her children’s hair with peroxide to be sure that they will always look like the Weasleys even if their surname is Potter.Neville Longbottom – pretending to be Luca, 17 years old, from Mangenta – says that he would like to have a date with Luna Lovegood, even though everybody knows he is secretly in love with Hermione Granger, one of his best friends’ girlfriend.“How do you feel about your sentimental situation?” “Tortured.” That is the only answer I received from a guy who has lost himself the day Voldemort killed his parents.Cho Chang – trying to become a perfect delegate named Federica - takes a vacation from Hogwarts and the rumours about his dead boyfriend Cedric:“Did you really fall in love with Harry Potter?”“No, I did not. I was engaged to Cedric, I kissed Harry Potter just to become popular at Hogwarts and I have always been deeply in love with Draco Malfoy, that is the truth. Since Voldemort got back it is difficult to be in a relationship with a Slytherin. Draco has such a big heart and nobody believes me!” In a little room close to the swimming pool we found the phantom of Cedric, that here is going by the name Alex and is chairing FEMM, he confessed me that he is going to haunt Harry Potter and steal his girlfriend. Thirsting for revenge he got back to the little gym and his committee. Will the hard work make him forget his beloved Cho?In the middle of the kitchen my team found Harry Potter trying to organize the breakfast: “Cedric Diggory is a loser, I should have killed him when I had the chance”.Bad habits die hard: walking across the forest I bumped into grumpy Hagrid: he didn’t want to make a statement, we only know that he is here playing the role of Sebastiano, the half-giant juror.

The world of all wonders

After five hours and more of a tiresome, but very useful Team-Building the Italian village was exactly the icing on the cake. As soon as it was given the “Go” by our beloved president, Tiago, everyone started his “food race”. No mercy, no laws, no forgiveness.Eleven schools from all around Italy (from the freezing north to the deep south) have gathered yesterday night in occasion of the Italian Village, whose main goal was to represent their local cultures through its culinary aspect and its traditions. Let’s just say they most definitely managed to stun us with olives, pizzas, salami, pesto, grissini, sausages and every kind of spices. All the delegates, together with their teachers, were generous and willing to spell out all the ingredients of each dish on their table and the officials, especially the international ones, could not stop tasting the delightful meals. The most popular table was the one of the Liceo Impallomeni, which did really look like a well-provided delicatessen, and in the same manner the Liceo Spano from Sassari with its huge assortment of cheese. Most of the people just could not count the astonishing, infinite varieties of cold cuts and cheese. With their impressive pesto, the schools from Genova, were attracting quite some public. The delegations proved, once again, how extraordinary Italians are when it comes to cooking, as if every single Italian almost magically developed an innate aptitude towards high gastronomic skills.

Three things you can learn

1. Italians sure know how to dance!Despite what part of the country the dancers were from, every performance was impressive. Probably it made an extra good impression at me because, eh, we Dutchies, well… Our dancing skills are worse than a drunken guy trying to dance at dubstep.I must say I’m a bit jealous, and I’m also very curious how much time it took to study the dances. And the Michael Jackson group, where did you learn to dance? Send me the address!

2. A dance can be good and funny at the same time. Most of the time, when you think of a funny performance, you think of something stupid (and I’m definitely not referring to the journo’s performance here…). But the performances yesterday showed us that it is also possible to do something funny that is not stupid – the best example would be the first performance, which showed us a lot of different dance styles in only a few minutes.

3. Ginny and Harry are the cutest couple ever.I’m sure I’m not the only one convinced of the fact that Ginny and Harry are utterly adorable together – how they talked to each other, and their constant giggling when they looked each other in the eyes…They had some problems at their romantic trip – Macho-Harry who got really sick on the boat, shy Ginny who got lost… We’ve never seen this side of the two before! But apart from that, I’m sure this was the best trip those two ever had – how can’t it be, with all the fantastic performances?

11 MarchWelcome back to “Today in History”, the only column in this issue that will bore you to death…!

1544 – Torquato Tasso, Italian poet (died 1595, before having the chance to write a new work that we would have probably ended up studying at school…what a shame!).

1702 – The Daily Courant, England's first national daily newspaper is published for the first time. Our predecessors!

1931 – Rupert Murdoch, Australian-born entrepreneur (he owns most of the TV networks you watch, bet you didn’t know that! Or maybe you did, considering the phone-hacking scandal involving the News of the World, one of the several tabloid newspapers owned by Murdoch).

1952 – Douglas Adams, English writer (died 2001 his books are worth a reading, sci-fi lovers!).

1990 – Lithuania declares itself independent from the Soviet Union.

1993 – Janet Reno is confirmed by the United States Senate and sworn in the next day, becoming the first female Attorney General of the United States.

2009 – Winnenden school shooting: 16 are killed and 11 are injured before recent-graduate Tim Kretschmer shoots and kills himself, leading to tightened weapons restrictions in Germany.

2011 – An earthquake measuring 9.0 in magnitude strikes 130 km (81 mi) east of Sendai, Japan, triggering a tsunami killing thousands of people. This event also triggered the second largest nuclear accident in history, and one of only two events to be classified as a Level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale.

Page 21: The Voldemorterra Chronicles

Never stop learning Every year, there are 20.000 people from all over Europe participating in one of numerous sessions. But… Why? Why would all those people spend so much time, money and effort on EYP?

EYP sessions are unique – there is nothing to be found that even is a bit like EYP. In EYP you interact with people all over Europe, you bond with people you would’ve never spoken to in your daily life. You actually become friends with people you just have known for a few days – but already know really well. You hardly get any sleep; you start thinking in English; and you lose track of time just because you’re too busy working and having fun.

But there is so much more to EYP.Where else do you find the opportunity to test your abilities to write a resolution in English, to debate with people with a totally different life than yours, to have a say in European issues, to bond with people you hardly know at the beginning of the session and to find consensus with them, to get to know more about other countries and cultures; to simply come together with people from all over Europe?

Did you ever realise how much you develop yourself in the process?Try to think about it and don’t stop improving your skills. When writing a resolution, you learn to understand other people’s opinions, which can be really hard sometimes. You learn to have heated yet respectful discussions and find consensus after it. You learn to use words to deliver your message. You learn to trust people, and to build on them. You learn how different the life of someone in another country can be. You learn to work hard, even when you’re dead tired.

Most people don’t realise they've learnt that much from just having participated in a session, even though you learn only more from it if you truly realise it. Just try it. Take a moment to stand still and become aware of all the things you have accomplished today, and what you have learned from the hard work you did. You’ll be surprised.
