    Hello Everyone

Phew! Thank goodness March is over as it is my least favourite month, promises

lots, rarely delivers, but hey! It's April. Proper Springtime with daffs., tulips and sweet

smelling hyacinths.Whinge Alert! It really annoys me when organisations from very large to tiny village

ones, put up hoardings and posters by the road side, on trees, bus shelters,

telegraph poles etc, and then do not take them down until weeks after the event,

when they become faded and tatty.

However, the very best place to advertise your event is right here in your magazine,

which goes to 1,500 households and a lot more people. So please feel free to send

    in your news.

    Have a lovely April Gina

01485 600341Sore throats are often caused byviruses and usually settle withinone to two weeks without the needfor any medical treatment. Whitespots on the tonsils do not imply a

    need for antibiotics.

Paracetamol should be taken for pain. Follow the advice on the pack.

Salt gargles may be used to ease a sore throat in adults and

children over 12. Dissolve two teaspoons of salt in half aglass of water, gargle and spit out. Repeat several times a day.

Please do not ask for antibiotics as refusal may offendMany people give reasons for asking for antibiotics to treatsore throats. “I'm going on holiday”, “I'm getting married” or“I've got exams” are commonly cited. Viruses are immune tosuch reasoning and antibiotics are no more likely to beeffective on these occasions.

    When to see the doctor

    · If a sore throat is so severe that you cannot drink

    · If hoarseness persists for more than six weeks

    · If a child who is ill refuses to drink · If you think that you (or your child) are seriously

    TO ALL PARISHIONERSTO ALL PARISHIONERS

“April is the cruellest month breeding lilacs out of a dead land...” The poet TS Eliot

was referring to the annual resurgence of new life in Spring - which will only die oncemore when its time comes, hence the cruelty: the annual cycle always leads to

death. But this is a bleak way of seeing the world.

As Christians we know that in Spring-time, each Easter-tide we can bear witness to

the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the life-blood which invigorates and

sustains our churches throughout the year. Our Christian faith is nourished by the

life-giving power of God in Christ Jesus, who gives us hope that will never die; the

power of the Holy Spirit is always at work in all our lives. April is in fact the most

joyful month – and the season of Easter-tide lasts all month.

As a former city-dweller, I really appreciate the joy of rural life and being surrounded

by the natural beauty of the countryside in Spring. I was at an RSPB reserve last

week and saw the reed beds quivering with new bird-life. In our villages, the toad

patrols are on high alert near our wonderful ponds, as toads emerge from

hibernation for their spring migration to breed where they were born.

Gardeners too are stirring in their potting sheds, planning for the year ahead. Our

lawn-mower has been dusted off but during its annual service it gave up the ghost soinvesting in a new mower became a priority. We decided against a self-propelled

one in case it ran away from us and attacked Rufus, always at our heels, but we

have gone for the best petrol engine we could afford, an investment in many happy

    years of mowing to come!

With Easter falling early this year we can now enjoy a leisurely stroll towards late

Spring and Summer as we welcome the new influx of visitors to our beautiful county,

passing through our villages and churches. Springtime activity in churches is similar

to that of gardening: dusting off the produce stall and trying to summon up new

energy for fundraising as well as doing a bit of spring-cleaning. If you have ever

thought of getting a bit more involved in Church life, now is the perfect time – we

really do need your help and support. Have a word with one of the churchwardens

or myself. Do come and join us for our Sunday services, especially as the weather

    gets warmer!

Happy Spring-cleaning, Happy Gardening! Most of all Happy Easter-tide! Reverend

    Judith

    Isabel Peck

We would very much like to thank so many people for the kind words expressed

about our mother, Isabel, who died on 23rd December 2015. We all appreciated

your support in words and in presence at her funeral. She will be remembered by

so many for her kindness, love, warmth and caring support. A few years ago, sheand Ron were very involved in All Saint's Church Ashwicken and the life of the

village, and they will be remembered for their house in the bluebell woods.

Willow and Oak Class have beenlearning about ‘Our Place in Space’

It was a fantastic trip and thechildren were all very tired by theend of a long day!

Here are some comments from thechildren …

I loved the planetarium because itmade me feel like I was flying.

    - Matthew

It was awesome … we saw 2 huge

rockets! - Jessica  I think one of thebest things we didhad to be climbing144 steps to see 2real life rockets, itmade me so dizzylooking over thebarrier because

    they were so big!

I really liked looking round theexhibits, as they weren’t all justwriting, there was things to do.

Another thing I liked, was thesimulator, as it bumped aroundeverywhere and I felt as if I was in arocket in space.

    - Poppy

I thought this would be OK but it wasmagnificent and amazing.

    - Chelsea

I had a wonderful time in thePlanetarium and we even got to

programme our own Mars rover!- Louisa

At the end of the day, just as Willowclass were waiting for the last fewmums and dads to pick up thechildren, we looked up to the skyand saw the moon. We stood andthought about howamazing it was that we

could look up in the skyand see the moon when

just a couple of hoursearlier, we had seen apiece of moon rock ondisplay that had beenbrought all the way downto earth! Wow!

Gina’s Page: an irregular page of fun things

A cab driver picked up a nun. She got into the cab, and noticed that the VERY

handsome cab driver wouldn't stop staring at her. She asked him why he was

staring. He replied: “I have a question to ask, but I don't want to offend you.”

She answered, “My son, you cannot offend me. When you're as old as I am and

have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about

everything. I'm sure that there's nothing you could say or ask that I would find

    offensive.”

“Well, I've always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.”

“Well, let's see what we can do about that: No. 1, you have to

be single, and No. 2, you must be Catholic,” she responded.

The cab driver, very excited, said, “Yes, I'm single and

Catholic! “OK,” the nun said. “Pull into the next alley.”

The nun fulfilled his fantasy with a kiss that knocked his socks off..

But when they got back on the road, the cab driver started crying.“My dear child,” said the nun, “Why are you crying?”

“Forgive me but I've sinned. I lied and I must confess; I'm married and I'm Jewish.”

The nun said, “That's OK. My name is Kevin and I'm going to a costume party.”

Savoury Drop Scones (I love these!)

2 cups of self-raising flour: ½ tsp. sea salt: ½ tsp black pepper: ½ tsp dried mixedherbs: ½ tsp dried mustard powder: 1 large egg 1 ½ cups of milk. Oil for cooking.

Beat all ingredients together for about 1 min. Heat oil to quite hot, but not burning,

drop a large spoonful of mixture in oil and cook for about 1 min each side. Place on

warmed serving dish and serve or cover them with foil and they

can be warmed up in an oven later. Serving suggestions: just

with butter: cream cheese and smoked salmon. Cottage cheese

and chives, cheddar and pickle, or with chilli jam . Oh Yum.

    EAST WINCH NEWSwww.eastwinchandwestbilney.co.uk

EAST WINCH VILLAGE HALL. AN APPEAL. Your village hall needs you

Our current trustees have served for many years but with advancing age and health

issues we do urgently need help. We seem to have reached a point however,

where unless we can get new blood to run and administer the affairs of the hall, we

will have to seriously consider closing the hall. This would be a blow to the clubs

who currently use the hall and I can assure everyone that this is a decision the

trustees would not wish to take as we feel the village would regret the demise of

    this vital asset.

For the past nine years I together with the other trustees have managed to keep the

hall moving forward. We have bookings and clubs on most days/evenings of the

week. The hall has been updated (where finances allowed) and we received a

grant from W.R.E.N. for the refurbishment of the kitchen. We have been able to

afford to engage a regular cleaner and grass cutter.

It's the admin side that we need cover for. Arranging bookings and paying bills etc. ,

So if you have any free time during the week, and like us, wish to see the hall

continue to thrive, PLEASE contact me on 841309 where I can give you further

    Parish Council meeting 7th March

At this well-attended meeting the Council decided to ask Mr Bland to continue therenovation of the telephone box. The Clerk is to follow up where the authentic redpaint can be obtained. The Council agreed to share the cost of a new notice boardequally with the Village hall committee. The chairman is to ask the owner of a tree

obscuring light from the Station Rd trod to cut it well back.

In future, the minutes of meetings will be available on the Village website only.

During the open forum a parishioner complained of yet another accident - thesecond in a month - at the corner by the RSPCA. The clerk is to inform NCCHighways and police and press for action. The amount of dog mess fouling thetrod, especially near the junction of Station Rd and Gayton Rd was complained of,as was the disgusting amount of rubbish on the A47 blown from the tip. JimMoriarty had been helpful in urging the Borough Council to tidy up. It appears thatthe tip is being closed at the end of March, but it's not known whether any nearby

space is being used or whether it is to go away from Blackborough altogether.Council to pursue this.

The new street lights in Town Close seem to be generally approved of. They willbe much cheaper to run and maintain than conventional sodium lights. TheCouncil will now move on to replace the lights in Station Rd and Church Lane.

The application for outline planning permission for a house at Station Cottage wasapproved.

Ideas had been sought for the best ways of using the playing field. To put most of

these into effect will require a change in the restrictions (no ball games, no over-14s, no dogs), and the Council will check with the Borough Council whether it willbe possible to do this.

The next meeting and AGM will be at 7pm on Monday, 25th April, a week earlierthan usual.

How would you like to use our phone box? As an information centre? A library? a home for a defibrilator? Or somethingentirely different? Please tell a parish councillor if you have any ideas. It would be

lovely if it could be used.

Café Style Family ServicesInstead of having a church service on the 2nd Sunday in each month, we aremoving to the Village Hall, where, in an informal family service, you'll be able toenjoy refreshments, and there'll be activities for the children so they'll be happywhile you worship. The next two dates are 10th April and 8th May, both and 10.30.Why not give it a go?

East Winch Village Hall Short Mat Bowls Club

I joined our Short Mat Bowls Club just over eight years ago, shortly after moving into thevillage. At the time I wanted to meet people and make friends and although I had neverplayed short mats bowls before, or even held a bowl, I thought this seemed a good way tostart. I was made very welcome on my first night and despite being a complete novicethey showed a great deal of patience together with a lot of helpful hints and bags ofenthusiasm. That night I forged many friendships and although that was my main aim Icame to enjoy the bowling as well.

With the passage of time many of our current short matters cannot always attend as

much as they used to and we are keen to attract new members. We play everyWednesday evening between 7.00pm and 9.30pm, except in the bad winter monthswhen we meet Wednesday afternoons. The cost of the evening is £2.00 which includestea and biscuits and if you do not own any bowls there is always some to borrow whenyou first come. The evenings are filled with much chat and a lot of laughter as well asvery gentle competition; so, if you are new to the local area, recently retired and lookingfor a new hobby, or would simply like to give bowling a try (and you do not have to be of acertain age to do so), why not come along. We are all waiting to welcome you!

If you would like any more information please call me on 01553 842453 or Janet or TerryRobertson on 01553 841309.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Easter Service and Egg Hunt and toeveryone who helped to make it happen. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

    Church changes

Having obtained a temporary licence to remove the reredos to see the state of thewall behind it and a licence to limewash the walls, we will aim to carry out this workover the summer months, funds permitting. Limewashing will cost in the region of

£3000, so we will need to do some fundraising for this. We will look at all the fundingoptions we have and then decide how best to raise the remainder needed.

We believe we have found a home for the organ, where it will be looked after andused to help in the teaching and development of skills in organ restoration andmusical performance. Now we have a potential home, we will apply for a faculty forthe necessary permissions.

This is all we are doing for the first phase.

Provided this first phase is successful, we will then look and see whether any further

changes would be helpful to add to the ways in which the church can be used.

If anyone would like to contribute any help towards our fundraising target, either by adonation, or with ideas for fundraising, please do get in touch.
