General Business:Wolf Grodd commented that the Thursday night (13th March) display of cars in Brisbane Street, one of the main streets of Central Ipswich, was an excellent cross section of cars from very early veterans up to 1980. The crowds were both enthusiastic and well behaved. There were 29 VCCQ members present at the Viva Italia Restaurant for dinner. It was good night even though there was a mix up of meals by the restaurant which was most unfortunate. Club participation in this event is recommended for next year if it is held. Plaudits must go to the Ipswich City Council for its cooperation in closing a main street and making this event possible. Why can’t the Brisbane City Council be similarly cooperative?

105 YEAR OLD "CAR OF KINGS" EMERGES FROM AUSTRALIA FOR SALE ATBONHAMS' INAUGURAL MERCEDES-BENZ AUCTION

1909 Mercedes spent its early years as station manager's car on remote Australian sheep farmA 1909 35hp Mercedes with a rugged past, estimated at €480,000-680,000, is being offered on 12 July as part of Bonhams' Mercedes-Benz Sale at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. The Sale will feature a choice selection of some 40 motorcars manufactured by the renowned German marque over its more than century-long history.Perhaps the last place one would expect to find an early Mercedes vehicle advertised as "the car of kings" is at Isis Downs, an isolated sheep station in Queensland, Australia. However that is where this 5.3 litre shaft-drive car lived for many of the early years of itslife, serving as the Station Manager's car from 1914 and remaining on the property until the early 1930s.The Mercedes was constantly exposed to the harsh conditions of the Australian outback, where early cars suffered from numerous mechanical difficulties. The rough terrain wouldsoon emphasise any weakness in a vehicle, with common problems including broken axles and persistent issues with the perishable Edwardian tyres and wooden wheel rims. However, those brands whose cars were built with the quality to withstand the rigours of rural life, like Mercedes and Rolls-Royce, became favoured by wealthy landowners.

    http://www.bonhams.com/press_release/16243/

  • The Vintage Car April 2014 Page 11

This 35hp Mercedes proved a wise choice and a hardy asset to those running Isis Downs, the owners keeping it in their possession for nearly twenty years. It was purchased by a neighbouring farmer in the 1930s and remained there until the 1960s, when it was rescued and restored. Despite being more than a century old, the car has had only five owners since new.Widely regarded as the first modern automobile right from the beginning when it was unveiled in 1901, the first Mercedes (which was also a 35hp model, but equipped with a different engine and chaindrive) set an entirely new benchmark in motoring. In the following years the company continued to innovate and develop a whole range of models from the original 35hp Mercedes, but in essence the low-built steel chassis, a light and powerful engine with gated manual gearchange control and honeycomb radiator (instead of primitive gilled-tube type), introduced easy-to-drive features which together provided the basis of the modern motor car.The 1909 Mercedes offered for sale retains these original features, and has the honour ofbeing quite possibly the world's oldest shaft-driven 35 hp Mercedes. It was with this model first launched in 1908 that Mercedes introduced shaft drive into their cars. By 1914 the whole range of passenger cars was equipped with shaft drive instead of the former chain drive. The modern engineering giant that is Daimler, manufacturing Mercedes-Benz motor vehicles, can trace its automotive roots back to 1886 when Carl Benz patented his pioneering Motorwagen, and Gottlieb Daimler fitted one of his new internal-combustion engines into a four-wheeled carriage. Fourteen years later, in 1900, wealthy entrepreneurEmil Jellinek commissioned Daimler to create what passed into history as the first, 'modern' motor car, which he marketed under the name of his then 11-year-old daughterMercedes. In 1926 the Daimler and Benz companies merged, the combine subsequently marketing its mainstream product under the Mercedes-Benz brand name.James Knight, Group Motoring Director at Bonhams commented, "We had been in discussion for a while with the Mercedes' Australian owner and are delighted to have secured such an interesting early Mercedes for the Sale. When we were in a position to announce the Mercedes-Benz auction to him, he did not hesitate and jumped at the opportunity to sell his car at the home of the marque. The Sale is attracting motor cars from all over the world and this extremely important entry further endorses the stature of the event."The Mercedes-Benz Museum maps the entire history of the world's oldest car manufacturer with a unique variety of exhibits. A total of 1500 exhibits, including 160 vehicles, can be seen on an area of 16,500 square metres.

This was Ray White’s car from Bellbowrie. Cheers, Joe

Another of Queensland's historical cars gone overseas. I thought we had legislation to stop this. Ed.

THE SCIENCE OF SCATOLOGY – Chris PikeDear Ed. Re; the article as published on P.18 0f The Vintage Car March 2014 edition:-

The Presidential preoccupation with this subject had me intrigued, so I logged on to Dr. Wikipedia, for a closer look at this subject, only to find that it wasn’t quite as exciting as anticipated:According to this ‘oracle’, scatology is a study of “fecal excrement, or excretory functions”…… now what could more exciting than that?

  • The Vintage Car April 2014 Page 12

Apparently our Prez thinks it is pretty good stuff. Could it be, that he is full of it? I’ll be more careful next time I am offered something to eat of drink at the presidential manor. This pre occupation conjures up images similar to Jurassic Park where our scatological president, complete with solatope and safari suit like the hero paleontologists wades into a pile of triceratops s..t to excavate the pile to find out what the critter (now feet up) ate to make it crook….I do like the Spanish definition though: “estudio de las heces fecales” ….. very expressive: a bit like a Scot swearing in Gaelic…..Now that IS expressive. Hae ye ever sin a Scot swearing at a gowf ball thet just missed the pin… I did once at St Andrews, and it really was impressive!

Anyway to the article:In the 1930s this gravel road was up what was then known as One Tree Hill. …We couldsee the Hill from where we lived at Hamilton. It wasn’t until the mid 1950s (about the time that TV was invented in Brisbane); that “Somebody” in the city council decided to change its name.So the big tree after which the hill was named lost its identity, and was replaced by a couple of steel ones belonging to Channels 9,2 and 7 and it became Mt Coot-tha, which isindigenous for three tree hill. I wrongly understood the name came from the aboriginal name for the bush bee honey found there – Kuta Ed.Anyway – the photo accompanying the article showing a Bugatti, which I think was of myfather piloting his brother's (Wynn Pike) Bugatti up that hill. The old man owned a Garrick bodied Bugatti that was subsequently acquired by the late Don Parker. Well the father’s car had the same chassis number as the Parker car….So how did Ivan Dutton get hold of the photo? I’d be interested in finding out.As far as I know I have the original? The caption is wrong because it was One Tree Hill when the photo was taken in the late 1920s or early 30sSo much for totally useless information…….

Sorry Doug, I couldn’t help commenting on your fetish. I’m frequently told that I am full of bovine scat ……Chris Pike

She knelt before me on the shed floor and tugged gently at first, then harderuntil finally it came. I moaned with pleasure. Now for the other boot.

Hi Brian,Don’t know if anyone is doing a report on the meeting on Friday night so here is a Derek observation.During the very important part of the evening when everyone eats outside and the BBQ is under pressure to perform I learnt something very important. If you lose your VW Golf car key a replacement will cost approximately $800 and a Porsche around $2000. Remember this is for the key not the whole car. Bet the keys cost next to nothing to make, say a $1.00 for the blank and the electronics will be dirt cheap. Wonder who is making all the money.A very low turnout, probably one of the smallest number of people I have ever seen at a meeting, but still an enjoyable evening. Meeting was run by Chris Pike and it ran smoothly with not a very long time on each report as most of the people who normally speak where absent. During tea break time a video on the Prescott hill climb trials was shown by Doug Heming on the big screen and enjoyed by everyone. Great to see these real cars attacking that hill. Any young ones today think doing doughnuts is showing off

  • The Vintage Car April 2014 Page 13

how much power they have and here are these 80 and 90 year old cars wheel spinning toget off the line – great to see.Joe Wilson reported that Rod Hiley, ex MGs owner, had passed away.Ian had his beautiful dog there and it made a quarter of a sandwich disappear like lightening. Great night, I look forward to these monthly get togethers – always interesting and a lot of laughs. Derek

VINTAGE MOTOR CLUB NSW – From the Editor, Jenny Fawbert. Can you put in your magazine a request for information on any ex-VMC cars your readersmay know of. The list of cars in the VMC rosters over 60 years is extensive. I am trying to document as many of the VMC cars 1954-2014 (the years the club has existed) as possible. We do hold photos of many and written details too over the years, but as cars have changed hands outside the VMC we have lost track of them. Where possible the Club would supply photos etc. from our archives in exchange for a current photo of an exVMC car to add to the historical record.

Rod Hiley, long time VCCQ member, passed awayon March 16 after an almost ten year battle withcancer. We first met in the early sixties through a guy whowas selling an Austin 7 Sports in Carina – it wassubsequently bought, restored and driven by RonToy.Rod lived in Old Cleveland Road and with brotherGeoff, drove TCs and even had a box trailer with19” wire wheels. He saw a potential in MG partsand started to wreck and sell parts from Carina, later from Solway Street Morningside and thenfrom the well known shop on Annerley Road.Business grew with the MG parts, trailer hiring andthe CPR agency.During this period, Rod started to gather some of the most historic MGs in Australia and for many years would have had a premier collection. This included a full set of “T” Types, including the Tickford's TB Drop-head Coupe, a very historic J3 which had a Montlhery history, an 18/80 Mark 1, an SA saloon – ex Ted Gamlen – a polished aluminium bodied NE and not one but two K3s, 3016, the ex Otto Stone car and 3031 the last one made.On two occasions I rode with Rod in K3s and I must say he was a very spirited driver, and the sound was spine tingling!I must pay tribute to Diane, daughter Sarah and her new husband Toby for the unending support, encouragement and love they showered on him during his tedious battle with bad health. Our prayers and sympathies are extended to them.It was an honour to have known him.A memorial service is to be held in April.Joe

Clayton's CONCESSIONAL REGISTRATION. - Editor. It sounds good but is it really. I got my Rego bill this week and notice it is now $199. Thisallows me to attend car rallies. Last year I won the trophy for attending the most club events for our club. This involved me covering 1611km for the year. That means I am paying 12c for every km just for rego.If I use my regular 4 cyl. car and pay $665 for full rego and do say 15,000km for the year I will be paying 4c for every km.How good is that. For the privilege of having concessional rego I am paying 3 times what the average motorist pays on full rego. And I am doing the most mileage of anyone in our club. What sort of concessional is that.On top of this I pay rego on 3 vehicles but can only use one at any one time. Pre war cars (75-115 yo) must go on a different scheme to the thousands of 30-70 year old cars.

IPSWICH VVCC 40TH ANNIVERSARY RALLY.Congratulations to Barry Blair and his small team who put this outstanding event together. VCCQ members stayed in the towns newest and best motel and did daily runs out into the local countryside. The official rallywas on Saturdayand Sundaywith the VeteranClub organisinga 2 day warmup event. Theyboth obviouslygot it right asboth eventsunknowinglyended up at thesamedestinations onboth days buteach went adifferent wayand haddifferent lunchvenues. Thanks to GregHill fororganising theVeterans part. With our clubs60th coming up next year I decided I had best resign from our committee if we have to match the work put in by the members of the Ipswich club. Thanks to the 29 VCCQ members who came along to the Thursday night dinner and made the night such a success. I was finally dragged out of the restaurant because they wanted to open Brisbane Street to traffic and I found my little Aston the last car parked there. I will have to talk to that car. Many thanks to all those involved in organising such a super event and congratulations tothe Ipswich City Council in giving their local club such great support. Take note BCC.

EVENTS DIRECTOR'S REPORT – Ronnie Brown. EVENTS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED. March 13 to March 16 was a very special time innearby Ipswich. VCCQ was invited to help theIpswich Veteran and Vintage Club Inc. celebratetheir 40th Anniversary and the Qld. Veteran Club, buoyed by the success of their 2012 GaslightParade, decided to hold a two day Rally prior tothe IVVVC celebrations. Our invitation extendedto join the Vets & I am delighted to say that 6cars from VCCQ attended. Our Club had the mostcars on show after the Ipswich & Veteran clubs. The Ipswich Events Corporation did a magnificentjob of showing the 140 cars on display to thecitizens of Ipswich and beyond. People had travelled from Rockhampton and the Gold Coast to attend and the main street of Ipswich town centre. Brisbane Street was closed to vehicular traffic for 3 hours, with the cars angle parked on both sides of the street. The newest vehicle was a 1979 Torana whilst the oldest was Ross & Rhonda Guthrie’s 1905 De Dion Bouton, with a Hupmobile from Gympie being one of the rarest!! The Marshalls did a great job of looking after the cars while we partied upstairs at an Italian Restaurant; about 30 of us enjoyed seeing members who have not been seen for a while, good to see you again Bob & Lesley Pope!

Taking to the leafy lanes around Ipswich was perfect driving as the organisers had given the option of differing routes to accommodate the 1 and 2 cylinder Vets. Friday was a special day for me as I was mistaken for the Queen by the Indian proprietor of the Peak Crossing petrol station and for the rest of the day, my navigator “Berkers” perfected the single handed wave!! I think her mistake was that I entered the shop when she looked up to see a magnificent black saloon, Veteran no doubt, with a distinct relationship to a Royal carriage parked on the forecourt!!The organisers did a great job catering for over 200 people and the Saturday night celebration dinner was made extremely special with the voices of Edith Piaf & Johnny Cash to entertain us while we ate. A small cabaret group, related to one of the organisersgave very professional renditions of their favourite songs, some of us could not help but sing along, while others tapped their feet!

Many of us wondered why the Brisbane City Council does not follow the Ipswich example and showcase, to citizens and Brisbane visitors, the rare & unique Veteran & Vintage vehicles, belonging to our clubs. The Ipswich Rallies gaveus a good opportunity tonetwork with members of other clubs and your Committee feels this is an avenue which should be explored if we are to have a hearing at the SIVS table & beyond, not to mention the job opportunities which

result from thriving Veteran & Vintage restoration businesses.

Kids at the Fernvale Primary school out to learn all about our old cars. The final morning, Sunday, saw a procession of cars leave the Ipswich Show ground, waved off by the Mayor of Ipswich & members of the public. I was delighted to hear the words “A lady Driver!! “as my Alvis left the park. Not quite the “My God! It’s A Woman” the title of Nancy Bird‘s book which I am currently reading!!!

morning tea is available. A pleasant country drive to Crows Nest where it is hoped we can all be accommodated at the Crows Nest Tourist Park. Due to an influx of people for the Festival, I have booked several cabins for our group. Luxury air conditioned en suite cabins are available for 2 people at a cost of $89.00, well appointed non-ensuite cabins are $65.00. A licensed restaurant is situated on site. In Crows Nest there are several takeaways, a bakery and the Grand Old Crow Hotel, which offers wood-fired pizza from 6 to 8pm on Saturday night. Please contact Ronnie asap for one of these bookings asthey are very limited!!!The Hampton Festival is on the Sunday with lots of market stalls and people!! Applegum Walk and Hartmannpark comprise a relatively bushland area exhibiting a range of geological, vegetative and historical features within the town area. Applegum walk is a track that follows the creek, passing the Pump Hole, the confluence of Bald Hills Creek and on into Hartmanns Park, a total distance of 1.5km.

BOULES DAY AT DAYBORO.At the last VCCQ Club meeting, it was decided that a Boules Day without Jennie and Peter Ransom would not be the same – hence it was decided to change the date to suit them. Boules is played in the park, past the Pub & down a lane, on the right hand side, near a Kindergarten. After our exertions, we retire to the Dayboro Pub for replacement offluid loss & energy giving pies!!If you can throw a heavy metal sphere, then you can take part but beware of Loretta Mutton’s famous right arm – she packs a punch or two!! She is the current club reigning Boules champion & has been for the last two years. So accept the challenge or just meet in the Pub for lunch around 12 noon. Parking beside, in front and a large car park at the rear of the hotel.

MOTOR BIKE SHOW – Editor. I went to the Troy Bayliss bike show atthe Ekka on Saturday and spent a mostenjoyable few hours studying the latestbikes. There were two standouts in myopinion. The 2014 Yamaha Super Tenereand the 2014 Suzuki V-Strom 1000.When I got home I read the latest

Ulysses Mag which had an excellent article on Adventure bikes. The current Adventure bikes were rated in the adjacent table.I wish I had seen such an article when I came to buy my bike. I think his summation is excellent and he stressed two important features. Firstly the most important attribute is weight or lack of it. And the second is tyres. The best adventure bike is not much better than any bike unless it has proper off road tyres.More by taking good advice than my know how I ended up with a pretty good steed. As well as being suitable for most road conditions my Kwaka KLR650 was the cheapest. With92,000k on the clock it is still going well. Long may it do so. If I had twice the money I could be riding a new Yamaha. 21 inch front wheels also help and more weight on the back wheel.

BIKE SALE.I hear that our Stanthorpe member Paul Reed has sold his collection of rare old motor bikes. A John Lennon from the north side is the proud new owner. The bikes were on display at the bike show on Saturday.

ROAD SIGNS.I have a thing about road signs. It annoys me to think that people are paid to litter our roads with the most inane tripe imaginable. On my recent sortie to the deep south I spotted a big sign which said something like “80% of road fatalities occur on corners”. Interesting statistics, but then why are all the radar traps placed on long straight sections of road. Is it because of their concern for our safety.I used to look down at the rego sticker on my motor bike and read its safety message. “Ifyou are not wearing a seat belt you are an idiot”.And what about “every k over is a killer”. I am sure you will notice many more from now on. You have to look the other way between Stanthorpe and Warwick it is so bad.NZ does not have such graffiti. The only sign to be seen is “Please drive carefully”

VCCQ MAGAZINE. Ed.Some members approached me in Ipswich and asked that I only send them the digital version of the mag. I remember Loretta Marron and Mike Hawthorne but not the others.I have changed the colours of the cover so that it is not black on black when printed as a B&W production. I was planning to keep the essential part of this mag to 16 pages so that I could send it for 60c postage but this was not possible. Maybe next month. By thenminimum postage will be 70c. This mag will go out as B&W to see how much it saves.I want to keep a posted version available but at minimum cost to those who take it. I fail to see the equity in spreading the cost to those who do not get it or in spending club funds for the few who do. Accumulated funds should be for the benefit of all who accumulated them, on say Devonshire tea for those who turn out for club events.

PRESIDENT'S SCATOLOGICAL OLIVES - Doug YoungDavid Niven in his book “The Moon's a Balloon” describes how, during his military service in Malta, he and his evil mate Trubshawe went to the fancy dress ball dressed as goats. The “goat fittings, footballs swung with rubber gloves” alone caused offence, and was regarded as a “Damn bad show”, resulting in “military moustaches and naval eyebrows bristling from every floor” as they looked down to the parade on the dance floor. To heighten the displeasure, during the parade Trubshawe told Niven to squat, whereupon he “produced a brown paper bag from the folds of his smelly rug and sprinkled black

olives on the floor directly behind me”. This resulted in trouble with the locals (who apparently had affection for goats that may not necessarily be completely explained by their milk giving properties) and a period of incarceration for their efforts.Every month I try to throw in a few olives to leaven the mix.“Scatological” was bestowed upon my feeble attempts to amuse, by our fearless KlubWoman of the Year, who needed only her nose to confirm the true nature of my offerings.Chris Pike’s piece this month made me realise I had failed, as he discloses he had to consult a dictionary for the meaning of “scatological” and thus determine the true nature of my olives. I would have thought that anyone who had read anything I wrote would have correctly identified it, without the need to refer to a thesaurus for confirmation. In this vein, during the week, life imitated art for me, when we were ordered to clear the swimming pool where I do my laps, because of a grotesque scene from the movie “CaddyShack” involving a mis-identified Chokito bar, being re-enacted. Only this time, it wasn’t a Chokito bar. Where’s Bill Murray when you need him?

Ipswich V&V RalliesThose of us who attended the conjoined rallies of the VCCA(Q) and the Ipswich Vintage and Veteran Vehicle Club were unanimous in that a wonderful time was had by all. The closed main street display with over a hundred old cars on Thursday afternoon and evening was breathtaking. The support of the Ipswich City Council to enable this to occur is magnificent. Let’s hope it becomes “the light on the hill” for other Councils around the State.Brian McM organised a fine dinner for over 30 of us at an Italian restaurant above the street where the cars were on display.I missed the Friday run through work commitments in Brisbane but the train was a pleasant way to get there with no traffic issues – and I missed out on having to pay the usual $72 to park for 3 hours opposite the Commonwealth Courts building in Tank Street.Friday night saw us at an Indian Restaurant, again a memorable evening, for different reasons. The Dextrous Texter can explain at his leisure. The Saturday and Sunday events were to my mind very well organised, even if the sometimes overly succinct route instructions meant some reliance on Google Maps and my Tom Tom Sat Nav helped. What struck me was the organisation of the meals, with over 200 being fed and watered at different places, especially at the Show Ground, with locally sourced entertainment to boot. The locally-sourced singers and band were also a delight. Helps if you have living in Ipswich a singer who is also the creative producer of the Brisbane cabaret festival.Trish Hanley’s Baby Austin features on thecover of the magazine this month, with itsoriginal Charles Hope body. Many attemptsto craft a pretty posterior on an old car, even when new, often produce unfortunateresults, but I have never seen a moreshapely one than this. (Charles Hope wasbetter known for making the “Cold Flame”kerosene domestic refrigerator.) Nice butt,Trish. One delightful surprise on the rally was theWW2 air raid shelter on the farmoverlooking the old Lowood aerodrome, later the motor racing circuit; hats off to the owner of the private land who allows people to visit it.

Bugattis at Canungra next Sunday - (6 April)It is not often we in the north get to see Bugattis on home soil (“Stig” Heming excepted). It will therefore be a rare treat for those who can make it next Sunday to O’Reilly’s Winery at Canungra to see those that manage to survive the Great Australian Bugatti Rally from Sydney to Qld. It is hoped that 9 Bugs will make it. Ladies, try not to wear any calico bodices, in case you think they are being ripped, given that Bugattis make a “noise like tearing calico”. Listing to Port (Macquarie) 10-15 April 2014Less then 2 weeks to this event, in conjunction with the Alvis Car Club of NSW. At last count we have a combined total of 28 entrants, 54 people, and 26 rooms booked at Port Macquarie, with 26 cars. We (Heather Goldsmith, ACC Pres and YT) have put together a packed programme of diverse and interesting activities, from which you can select to do all, none, or some. To recap, we leave on Thursday 10, spend the first night in Armidale, before going down the Oxley Highway to Port Macquarie, where we stay for 3 nights. On the Friday night at Sails, we will be joined by Tim Atherton (the son of former member John Atherton), and his wife Amanda. Tim is an official in the Port Macquarie-Hastings City Council. Lunch at an historic home and winery, maritime and other museums, a sunset dinner cruise on the Hastings River, visits to the ruins of a convict gaol and stately pile, and participation in the annual Port Macquarie-Hastings City CouncilHeritage Festival await. I for one can’t wait to hear the Laurieton Men’s Shed singing a few rollicking colonial songs accompanied by the Scots Pipe Band, followed by Miss Showgirl (Camden Haven) 2014 presenting awards as the train arrives. On Monday most of the VCCQ contingent go to Coffs Harbour, heading home on Tuesday 15th. In closing, to maintain the scatological tradition, here’s a little something from the American comedian Emo Philips:“When I wake up in the morning, I just can't get started until I've had that first, piping hot pot of coffee. Oh, I've tried other enemas.”KBO,DY
