Vice President: Danny McCann

Hello members.

I hope you and your families had a good time on the long weekend in

October, the weather was perfect for sharing time with family and friends

and not in complete isolation.

Laraine and I had time at home and also visited family on Sunday, it was

great to see them again.

The club would like members to participate in organising and running a

club run and outing, you would have to find a location suitable for cars

and a picnic spot or a nice lunch venue when we are allowed during this

upcoming year.

I have organised a Wednesday run to Strickland Reserve Narara off Dog

Trap Rd / Mangrove Rd, we have had an outing there in the past and it

was very enjoyable, This coming run will be on Wednesday November 4,

meeting at Wyee at 9.30am ready to leave at 9.45am for morning tea at

Woodbury Bridge park then on to Strickland reserve picnic area for our

lunch stop.

For now, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you at the November

meeting. Any members wanting to buy club merchandise see me at the

meetings.

Club Captain: Marilyn Vella

Hi Members,

I have sent out an email asking if anyone knows of any members that are

sick, been hospitalised or anyone who might need a phone call to say hi

and enquire after them. If you do, please let me know.

Get Well cards were sent to Sharon Smith and Ron Thomson and a

sympathy card to Stella Bell.

We have a few members still getting over operations and proceedures.

Sharon Smith is still unwell and trying her very best to handle her

condition. Bill Hansell is slowly recovering from the serious operations he

had and Sue Dewhurst is making slow, small steps dealing with the loss

of Mark.

Christmas Party.

Tentative booking was made with CCC for the party at the usual venue.

Unfortunately, it is not viable to conduct the Christmas party there under

Council’s interpretation of the COVID 19 rules. Geoff has tentatively

booked the Hall at Dooralong for Sunday 29th November 2020. We have

been there before and you will recall it is a larger but older building.

There will be no time limit and the fee of $44 is cheaper than the usual

place. Northlakes Spit are booked and are happy to go to Dooralong.

Events Director: George Vella

The few runs we have had thus far have been fairly well attended. The

only problems we have experienced has been the rain.

Page 5: The Roadstar - Shannons

4

Richmond Vale Train run was well attended. It was good to see all the

volunteers there as they have been doing a great job restoring the

museum. The club’s donation to the museum was around $250.

Upcoming runs:

We have a run to Swansea on Saturday 10th October. This will be a

twilight run. Meet 3.30 leave 3.45. BBQs available. BYO everything

else.

I have a few suggestions for midweek runs but desperately need

suggestions for Sunday runs.

Newsletter Editor: Dennis Tame

Apology from Dennis: Unfortunately, he was unable to attend. See his first

edition of the Roadstar tonight.

Plates Registrar: Bill Hansell

Thank you for your care about me during my recent illness. Be sure to

comply with the rules on runs, including proof of membership. I have

heard reports of police booking drivers for having an obstructed view

through their windscreen. Make sure Sat-Navs etc are not in your field of

vision.

Librarian/Historian: Mick Smith

Nothing to report.

Acceptance of all reports: Moved D.Reilly and seconded K.Hull

- Carried.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

1. Discussion regarding membership card. Some members still hold old cards from previous years. L. Laney has been asked to order new cards from Vistaprint. The Treasurer will validate the order.

2. The suggestion was made that Wyee Hall may be an option for the Christmas party. Geoff will phone LMCC to check cost and availability.

3. Marilyn asked for payment for the Christmas party to be made at the next meeting.

There being no further business, the meeting closed at 8.15 pm.

Next General meeting 12th November 2020 at 7.30 pm.

This month’s “Cover Page” is William Gale’s MGA

My 1957 MGA Roadster was advertised in the car sales columns of our local paper in 1998. The body was in immaculate condition and well preserved seeing that it had been stored in a shipping container. The MG had about 40,000 miles on the speedometer at the time of purchase. Unfortunately, the owner was unable to fulfill his dreams of rebuilding the engine due to ill health and was happy to sell the vehicle to me so that I could help him complete his dream. Over the years that I have owned the MG I have rebuilt the motor. It has been rebored, fitted with a mild cam and a larger radiator. I have also had work done on the head while also replacing the oil pump with a larger unit. Recently I have had the body resprayed and am very happy with the outcome. This mighty little car has taken Robyn and me up to the Glasshouse Mountains in Queensland four times and now we enjoy taking it out on the club runs.

The information contained in this article was in the business pages of GOAUTONEWS

Excerpts from release by NEIL DOWLING

EV CO2 emissions are ‘worse than petrol’

ELECTRIC vehicles that are charged using power generated by coal are not as

green as cars running on petrol or diesel, according to ABMARC, a respected

Australian engineering research group. Analysis showed EVs particularly in the

eastern states, are responsible for more carbon dioxide emissions than petrol

vehicles and that in Victoria CO2 emissions are similar to diesel vehicles.

ABMARC prepared the report in the lead-up to the federal election in May 2019.

The report has come to light after it was leaked to ‘The Australian’ newspaper

after the election.

All the CO2 emissions data used in ABMARC’s analysis was readily available

from government data. ABMARC also looked at the comparison between EV

markets of Australia and Norway, the country used by EV groups to showcase

the potential benefits of EVs. Norway also has special incentives for EV

purchase by its citizens including free tolls, some free parking, reduced

registration charges and free public charging points. EVs are subsidised in

Norway while conventional engine cars are penalised with higher taxes. As the

number of EVs in Australia increase, the importance of clean electricity also

increases. If we continue to rely on coal for electricity it is not guaranteed that

Australia will receive a net CO2 emissions benefit in switching to EVs.

Notes by Geoff Reilly.

1) At this stage we are just moving the pollution from the car to the power station.

2) Norway power generation is well over 90% from hydro and wind, the rest from coal & gas. To read the full text, Google GOAUTONEWS scroll to ed.989-Sept 4

SATURDAY TWILIGHT CLUB RUN

On Saturday October 10 we had a total of 11 cars heading off to Reid

Reserve at Swansea Heads, what a beautiful place right on the

Swansea Channel. Upon arrival we set up our tables and chairs and

enjoyed tea and bikkies and a good chat. The air was soon filled with the

smell of BBQ snags and onions, my they smelt so good. Some members

decided to go for a walk and check out the area as there was plenty to

see. After a while it was game time and Marilyn’s ABC game was a great

hit. There was plenty of laughter and fun. Congratulations to Jeanette

Beverley the winner. Then some members gathered to play Bocce with

George Vella as Umpire...well would you believe taking full advantage of

Bob O’Brien’s absence Wal Reed (that’s me) won the Bocce, yes, I

actually did. Well, all good times must come to an end so as the night

approached, we made our way home after a great twilight run with

perfect weather and great friends.

CRACKNECK CLUB RUN

The Crackneck club run scheduled for November 20 was cancelled due to the wind and rain and was diverted to McKenzie Park, Budgewoi.

️ ️ This is certainly a jinx run for our club. It has been put on the back burner until next year. So, Budgewoi here we come!!! Upon arriving at the park, we set up and

had our morning tea. When we arrived, we noticed a man asleep and shivering under one of the tables. I felt sorry for him so I placed a small blanket over him. Stella also put another blanket over him and gave him a cuppa. Both Stella and I made him comfortable throughout the day and invited him to share our lunch. I am sure that he really appreciated us showing him some attention and being kind to him. George and I decided to bring Rocky our Jack Russell dog to the car run. He had such a great time and all the people there loved him.

Thank you so much to the following members who turned-up to this wet and windy day, you all should be presented with a gold medal. Paul Baker and friend Nanette, Stella and Wal Reed, Carol and John Ashton, Shirley and Eddie McPartland, Mike Smith and Rocky, (the dog) Marilyn and George Vella. We all had a lovely time on the day. The kindness shown and the caring

attitude displayed was really appreciated. In essence the company was fantastic, the entertainment amused us all while the love we all

felt was real. ️ ️ ️ ️ ️

SOMETHING TO REMEMBER

Don’t forget to carry a photo identification with you when you

attend our club meetings. I made the fatal mistake of failing to do

so at the October meeting and the person at the desk of CBSC

wouldn’t allow me in. She must have thought that I looked too

young to purchase from the bar. Ha! Ha!
