TIME FOR EVERYTHING
I can’t believe I’m writing an article for July! The
year is going by so quickly. As I write this, our
youth are in Hallsville at UMArmy. Vacation
Bible School is less than 2 weeks away, and then
church camp takes place in July.
Summer is flying by and before we know it
school will begin, and so it goes from one year to
the next. Our lives move at warp speed the older
we get. That’s why it is so crucial that we live
meaningful lives, lives dedicated to God, every day.
We don’t have time to waste because the length of our lives is unknown.
As each of us has witnessed, life can end unexpectedly despite the plans
we have made for the future. Tomorrow is not guaranteed to any of us.
So, we must live today and every day giving God our fullest and best for
His glory.
How do we live for God in the midst of our busy, overscheduled lives?
Here are some suggestions:
Start your day with quiet prayer time. Every person can
take at least 10-15 minutes at the beginning of the day to talk and
listen to God. Ask God into your day and ask Him to show you
new opportunities to share grace.
Commit to finding joy in every day. We should enjoy our
work, our families and our volunteer time. If it takes re-framing
your attitude, then ask God to help you do that. You were
created for a purpose and that purpose includes living with joy
and gratitude each day.

Didn’t receive The Vine by email?
Don’t miss important information and events each
month due to not receiving emails sent by Pastor
David or the church office. If you haven’t been
getting The Vine or emails, please put a note in the
offering plate, or call Venus at the church office (903)
894-6762.
Need a Name Tag?
Active members and visitors name tags are located on
the shelf (alphabetical order) in the foyer. If you need
a name tag, please put a note in the offering plate, or
call Venus at the church office (903) 894-6762.
Please Let Us Know
From the Pastor’s Desk continued
Do something good for someone every day. It may be as small as telling a clerk he is doing a great job
or thanking someone who deserves to be appreciated. Visit someone who is sick or lonely. Call someone
who needs encouragement. Give others your best self.
Offer grace. In the big scheme of life most things folks do that offend or annoy us are inconsequential.
That snarky remark from someone at church, that look you thought someone gave you, the lack of
gratitude from the store clerk – none of these is really that important. We ought to offer grace and “let it
go”, just as God does for us with our many mistakes.
If you are trying to figure out ways to live more fully for God, think and pray about the vision of our church, to
LOVE, GROW, and SERVE. How can you more fully engage in that vision?
How can you LOVE God more deeply? What one step can you take to GROW in faith? How can you actively
SERVE your church and the world in the name of Jesus?
Live fully in the grace and love of our Lord, giving gratitude for the gift of each day! May you be filled with joy as
you live for God!
In Christ,
Pastor Tammy

United Methodist Women
While looking ahead to our regularly scheduled meetings, I was thinking, what about our "Hands on Project"?
We have decided to do the Health Kits again because it is an easier project for our group. If anyone in our church
wishes to bring something as you did last year, these are the items needed:
1 Hand Towel (no kitchen, cleaning or microfiber towels)
1 Wash Cloth
1 Comb (sturdy and longer than 6")
1 Metal Nail File Or Fingernail Clipper (no emery boards)
1 Bath-sized soap in original packaging (no Ivory or Jergens soap due to moisture content)
1 Adult Toothbrush in original packaging
$1.00 to purchase toothpaste (expiration date keeps us from purchasing ahead of time)
We will have a box for your donations available in Harper Hall on the East side. In case you are unaware of what
we do with these items, they are sent to the warehouse in Louisiana from all the Methodist Churches in our
district for disasters that occur (like Hurricane Harvey), etc. We feel very blessed that we can help others and we
thank you for your participation.
Love and Hugs,
Kathleen Kyles, V.P.

Children’s Corner
Thank you so much to everyone who helped with our “Shipwrecked” VBS! We had so much fun on our uncharted
island where we learned the truth that Jesus helps us through life’s storms. This year we started VBS on a Sunday
evening with worship and supper for the whole family then continued the rest of the week with classes Monday-
Thursday as usual. So many people stepped up to make this event possible and I’m so grateful.
Please plan to join us this summer for some Children’s Ministry playdates, see above!
Blessings and Peace,
Deirdre

God Bless America
The fourth of July is a good time to write about what our Christian faith meant in the formation of our
country.
The much quoted, “Separation of Church and State,” is found only in the first amendment to the constitution,
also referred to as the “Bill of Rights. Look it up. It can be found in any encyclopedia.
Amendment 1: Freedom of religion, speech, and the press; rights of assembly and petition: Congress shall make
no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; What I have underlined is it.
There isn’t any more. But, lots of people interpret it to read what they want it to read when actually what it says is
that the government will not establish any church or interfere with our churches and worship. There is no other
mention of churches or religion in our Constitution or Bill of Rights.
On top of the Washington Monument are four plates. One of these four plates is embossed with two Latin
words: Laus Deo. In English "Praise be to God!" Inside the monument, on 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the
City of Baltimore; on the 20th landing is a eulogy for George Washington presented by Chinese Christians from
Ningo, Chekiang Province, China; on the 24th landing is a presentation made by Sunday School children from
New York and Philadelphia, quoting Proverbs 10:7, “The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall
rot.” Luke 18:16, “But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of
such is the kingdom of God,” and Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not
depart from it.” Inside the cornerstone at the base of the monument, is a Holy Bible presented by the American
Bible Society.
These words to the governors of the 13 states are inscribed on a bronze tablet adjoining the Washington pew
in St. Paul's chapel in New York City.
“Now I make it my earnest prayer that God would have you and the State over which you preside, in His holy
protection, that He would incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to
government, to entertain brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow citizens and the United
States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the field, and finally, that He would
most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy and to demean ourselves with that
charity, humility and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed
religion and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy
nation. I have the honor to be, with much esteem and respect, Sir, your Excellency's most obedient and most
humble servant.” George Washington

John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in a private letter to clergyman Jedidiah Morse wrote this:
“Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and
interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers. It is to be regretted, but so I
believe the fact to be, that except the Bible there is not a true history in the world. Whatever may be the virtue,
discernment, and industry of the writers, I am persuaded that truth and error (though in different degrees)
will imperceptibly become and remain mixed and blended until they shall be separated forever by the great
and last refining fire.” John Jay
Benjamin Franklin, to the Second Continental Congress 1775:
“I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth-that God
governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that
an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings, that ‘except the Lord
building the House, they labor in vain that build it.’ I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his
concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be
divided by our little partial local interest: our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a
reproach and bye word down to future ages. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate
instance, despair of establishing governments by human wisdom and leave it to chance, war, and conquest.” I
therefore beg leave to move-that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on
our deliberations be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed business.”
Benjamin Franklin
The Chaplain of the United States Senate opens each session of the United States Senate with a prayer,
and provides and coordinates religious programs and pastoral care support for Senators, their staffs, and their
families. The Chaplain is appointed by a majority vote of the members of the Senate on a resolution nominating
an individual for the position.
Chaplains are elected as individuals, not as representatives of any religious community, body, or
organization. As of 2014, all Senate Chaplains have been Christian but can be members of any religion or faith
group. Guest Chaplains, recommended by Senators to deliver the session's opening prayer in place of the Senate
Chaplain, have represented "all the world's major religious faiths."

The current chaplain and former chief of navy chaplains, Rear Admiral Barry C. Black retired, was elected in
2003.

The youth are selling t-shirts like the ones worn on Youth Sunday. The profit from these shirts will go toward
the cost of YOUTH 2019. This event will be held next summer in Kansas City, Missouri. YOUTH 2019 is a
national gathering of United Methodist Youth that happens once every four years! This is an amazing
opportunity for students to attend workshops, participate in missions, and fellowship with other Methodist youth
from around the country. For one youth to attend we estimate the cost to be between $900-$1000. T-shirts will
be sold for $20 for sizes S-XL & $22 for sizes 2XL & 3XL. Please fill out the bottom portion of this form and
return as soon as possible to Venus in the church office or Patrick on Sunday. T-shirt sales will run through the
month of July. Thank you so much in advance for your support of the Youth!
Altar Flowers Per the Worship Committee, the Altar Flower policy for the church is as follows:
Set price for altar flowers/per Sunday is $35.00 (there will be no special requests
for kinds of flowers). If a second person signs up for a Sunday, then one of two things
can happen:
1. You can split the cost of $35.00 (for the two arrangements), if first person is agreeable.
2. If you want a complete complement of flowers which can be placed on the organ or piano (not the altar),
you’ll need to make your own arrangements with your florist, including payment.
The flower calendar is in Harper Hall (by doors going to courtyard). When signing up
for flowers:
1. Choose a date.
2. Print clearly the name of person/persons in “Memory or Honor of”
3. Print clearly the name of person/persons giving the flowers.
Please note that you can take the altar flowers home; the green plastic containers that the flowers are in need to
stay at the church. If you have any questions/concerns, contact the church office (903) 894-6762.
