Pat and Sharon made a whollydifferent home of it which inlesser hands may have meant

Upon arriving at the hayride,ou are greeted by various

characters dressed up to

frighten you including a ware-wolf and a witch who have a

surprise around each corner.The barn takes you into a longand dark maze which seemsto take forever to navigate asyou end up walking slowlyin anticipation of what maybe next. In the pitch blackyou are confronted with allsorts of surprises in the mazeand barn including a vortextunnel which makes you feelas if you are spinning. Afterleaving the maze, you arethen put onto one of seven

hayrides, caged trailers thatrun behind wagons. You are

driven around a circuit witheven more chilling surprises toscare the wits out of you.

Indeed the cast of charactersis wide with there beingover 70 people in the act, allof which John Kent placedin cast himself. Many arereturning monsters and thecast members are all ages ofpeople. We have a great castof people that do a tremendous

A trio of businesses awaitsskiers and snowboarders notfar from the slopes of HolidayValley. Located at 6113 Route219S, The Boardroom, ThePowder Room, and AlpineSki Rental are essentially onebusiness under the same roofand owned by Mike and JodieTimkey. The Boardroomis the primary business,selling snowboards, bootsand accessories; The PowderRoom specializes in womenswinter sports gear, and AlpineSki Rental is the ski rentalpart of the business. This yearthe business is celebrating 25years of operation, and Mike

is quick to point out, We area family owned business inevery sense of the word.The shop started out originally

as ski rentals only, and as Miketells me, We do daily rentals,we have high performanceski rentals, high performancesnowboard rentals, and multi-day rentals. They are alsothe only business that sellsHoliday Valley lift tickets off-site.

As the business evolved, theyopened The Boardroom in thesame building and, accordingto Mike, We specialize insnowboards only; we dont sellskis. Indeed, its clear that

by snowboarders.Over the years The

Boardroom has evolved withthe sport of snowboarding,When we started it was very,very specific; the customerbase was anywhere fromfourteen to twenty years old.That was it - no girls, no kids,no women, Mike tells me.As those early snowboardersgrew up and started familiesof their own, the market beganto mature, and now their kidsare coming in now and buyingstuff.

As snowboarding technologyhas changed, The Boardroomhas kept pace. Mike

demonstrates a new reversecamber snowboard; theadvantage being the slightarch found in the middle ofsnowboard has been split intwo and moved towards eachend of the new snowboards.This places the area of theboard with the most controlsurface under each of theboarders feet.

In response to the continuingevolution of winter sports,the Timkeys opened up ThePowder Room, cateringexclusively to the demandsof women boarders. Jodietells me, We opened up ThePowder Room because thats

the part of the business thatwas growing. Mike chimesin, When we first started,there was no such thing aswomen specific. It was strictly

guys stuff in smaller sizes.He adds, Companies have

done a great job addressingwomens needs as far as styleof boards - graphically as wellas performance. But ThePowder Room is more than justboards: jackets, pants, glovesand goggles are all for sale, andare all clearly fashioned withwomen in mind.

The entire family is involvedin the store: from Mike andJodie, their daughter Sam andson Spencer, to their two BassetHounds, Shamus and Buster,both of whom pull regularshifts at the store. All of themshare in the running of thestore, from helping customersat the cash register to renting

skis or selling boots. As Mikesays, We feel thats what givesour shop the flavor that it has.Management positions wedont have any of that. Sam isquick to point out the laidbacksnowboard style atmosphere,We wear our jeans andsneakers to work.

Looking back on 25 years inthe business, it seems that thefamily wouldnt have it anyother way. Mike almost beamswhen he says, Boarding hasallowed us to do a lot of funthings together, and its gottenour kids involved. Weve met aton of great people. Its a greatsport to be involved with.

The first impression you getentering The City Garage onMonroe Street in Ellicottvilleis this store is big on gear-a huge wrench serves as thehandle on the front door.

Inside youll notice the shelvesare suspended by rugged chainlink cables. Move past theracks of jackets and snowpants, climb the metal linedstairs to the second floor andyoull see row upon row ofskis waiting your inspection.

Brother/sister team Sean andParta Lowes are celebratingtheir 10th year as ownersof The City Garage. CityGarage started out with adirt floor and no electricity.The original location was inthe building that now housesCoffee Culture and Subway,but in 1999 they moved intotheir present location after

they finished remodeling it.We kind of cater to a different

group of people, Sean tellsme. We started out as just amogul and free ride shop then

we embraced the whole twintip culture and skiing style andnow its getting to be a hugeportion of our business. Hegoes on to explain, Twintip skis were brought to themarket by Salomon in 1996to help enhance tricks, half

pipe skiing, mogul skiing that type of thing, and now itsevolved into terrain park andhalf pipe product. Now, a lotof twin tips are designed forskiers who have no intentionof ever skiing backwards.The product blend at TheCity Garage covers the entiregamut of the sport. Wereselling a lot of wider fatterskis to people in their 40s and50s. Parents of young rippersare getting into the game. Ithink we have something forevery demographic that walksin the door.

Sean was an on-the-road skisalesman for sixteen years, and

thinks that experience gavehim a different perspective ofthe sport. Personally, I thinkI bring a different spin on thebusiness. So, I made a living

out of going into different skishops, seeing what was goodand what was bad. Sean adds,We spend time out in Utah,so we get a lot of insight intowhat is going on out there atbigger mountains and Westernresorts, and we try to bring that

flavor to The City Garage. Hepoints out that they have beenselling telemark skis for thepast several years, and they arethe one ski shop in town that isopen year round.

In a town that some mightthink is overloaded with skishops, Sean is sanguine aboutthe competition. In fact, hepoints out that he is friendswith the other ski/board shopowners. Thats kind ounique about everybody on awhole; every shop gets along.In a bigger city it doesnthappen. So I think it onlybenefits the consumer thatshere visiting Ellicottville. Its

a family owned and operatedbusiness since 1961. KylieDekdebrun will be the thirdgeneration to run the storewhen she takes over from herparents sometime in the future.I asked Kylie what makestheir store different from theother stores in town. I thinkour biggest is that we look fordifferent unique opportunitiesto present to consumers.There are so many high qualityproducts on the market. We tryto give them something thatwill differentiate themselves

on the hills.For Kylie, the biggestpart of her job is building arelationship with the customer.

hen facing a customer whois interested in taking upskiing or snowboarding, shewill often ask them, Why doyou want to ski? Maybe youwant to go out and ski withyour grandkids. Maybe youhave a significant other whoskis. She adds, There are alldifferent types of needs as towhat a person is looking for,and I want to identify what

that need is before I talk to youabout what type of equipmentwould be best. Shell go

on to try and determine thecustomers athletic ability andwhat type of skiing they havein mind. Maybe you want togo rip it up on the slopes rightaway, or are you going to be alittle more timid?

But customer service doesntstop after the sale. Many timesas the skier or boarders skillsgrow, they will return fornew equipment, There are awhole lot of things that couldhappen in a couple of years,maybe he/she (the customer)

just needs to upgrade onecomponent.

Kylies sense of relationshipbuilding extends to the

larger community as well.In November they will holdthe Jeanie Thoren WomensWeekend workshop. JeanieThoren is a professional skiinstructor and boot fitterwho believes that the bio-mechanical differencesbetween men and womenresult in difficulty for womentrying to ski on equipmentdesigned by and for men. As with any ski shop,Dekdebruns keeps up with

the technological changes inwinter sports, and Kylies eyeslight up when I ask her about a

Walking through the doorat Mud Sweat n Gears at21 Washington Street, yourfirst impression is that thisstore is serious about skiingand snowboarding. Its nosurprise given the backgroundof the two owners. Miguel

zcarate spent many yearson the professional racecircuit, mostly in Europe and

also in South America. Wifeand co-owner Kim Readingalso has an extensive racingbackground. Kim points out,We defiantly put ourselves onhe map with ski racing, ande built all the services and

everything around that. A fewears ago they sold the bicycleide of the business.And for Kim and Miguel its

all about the boot. Ever sincebuying the store from a friendn 2001, they have placedheir emphasis on matchinghe proper boot to the skier.

iguel says, We think thekey ingredient of the wholehing is still the boot. All the

employees of the store havebeen to boot fitting school.Miguel says, We donthave just one single personwho knows how to fit boots;

After a customer has foundthe perfect ski boot, the careextends to the ski as well.Getting the right combinationof ski and boot is criticalto creating a quality skiexperience. As Miguel tellsme, The whole objectivehere would be to try to matchthe level of skier with theright fit of boot, with the right

fit of ski. He points out animproperly fitting boot canmake for a painful, unpleasantday of skiing.

But their emphasis onfinding the proper fit extendsto snowboarding as well.Employee Shad Nowicki spentseveral years as head coach ofthe Holiday Valley snowboardteam. I asked him what wouldbe most important for someonestarting out snowboarding.The boots are the foundationfor our whole business. Startwith the boots, get yourself adecent board and take a lesson.

INGREDIENTS:1 bag fresh spinach3 tablespoons pine nuts1/2 cup whole milk ricotta

cheese1/4 cup grated Parmigiano-

Reggiano1 handful dark olives finely

chopped

2 cloves garlic,fi

nely choppedSalt and freshly ground blackpepper

A few grates nutmeg6 chicken breasts6 slices prosciutto3 to 4 tablespoons extra-virginolive oil

METHOD:Preheat oven to 400 degrees

F. Blanch spinach until wilted.Toast nuts and combine withspinach in a bowl, mix incheeses, olives, garlic, salt,pepper and nutmeg. Cut intoand across but not all the waythrough the chicken breasts,opening them up like a book

with a sharp knife. Season thechicken with salt and pepper.

Fill each with a small mound ofstuffing. Flap chicken breastsback over stuffing and wrap

each breast with prosciutto toseal them, carefully covering

the whole breast. Brush chickenall over with some extra-virginolive oil and roast 18 to 20

minutes until cooked through.Enjoy!

Anyone interested in art in theSouthern Tier can be grateful forthe collaboration that regularlybrings Buffalo artists to theOlean Public Library for a run ofa month or in some cases more.With the current exhibition ofwork by photographer HansGindlesberger, the matchupof artist with communityis particularly apt. A nativeof northern Ohio and aformer resident of Buffalo,

Gindlesberger is interestedin what he calls locality anddisplacement. on exhibition in Olean,Gindlesberger has this to say:This work interrogates the

troubled relationship we havewith the places to which webelong. In this photographicseries, the American smalltown serves as the locus atwhich the mythical image ofAmerica intersects with therealities brought about by theloss of community, a globalizedeconomy, rural depopulation,and traumatic repurposing ofthe landscape.

The exhibition consists of15 large-format gicle prints,digital composites, madebetween 2006 and 2008.Often centering the subject

of each photograph arounda well-known idea or image,Gindlesberger organizes hiscompositions classically.The carefully constructed

foregrounds and backgroundsof his landscapes and cityscapesand his able control of contrastsin line and light give each piecea clarity of design. Most of theimages include his transientcharacter set in a symbolictableau, giving a present tenseto the narrative of the picture.This nowness enables theviewer to have a more personalentrance into the experience oeach photograph, as the viewertends to replace the figure in thephotograph with her or himself.

Did you know that we havea genetically predeterminedhappiness level? It is true; weare born with a happiness setpoint that remains relativelystable throughout our lives. Ourhappiness baseline is thoughtto remain unchanged and it hasbeen suggested that trying to

be happier was once as futile astrying to be taller. Whether youwin the lottery or lose a limb,after about three to six months,your happiness level will returnto its predetermined set-point.

On the contrary, recenthappiness studies uncoverednewfindings showing happinesscan be influenced by expressinggratitude and being thankfulfor such things as friendships,family, and a productive career.Being optimistic and expressinga positive outlook can influenceyour baseline level of happiness.This is all good news. We

have the power to controland influence our happinessset point even though it isgenetically predetermined andonce thought to be out of ourcontrol.

If you were in the last daysof your life and reminiscedabout all the moments ofpleasure and pain, would your

pleasurable moments exceedthose that were painful? Wouldyou discover that you lived lifewith a relatively high level ofhappiness? Alternatively, wouldyou feel regretful that you didnot choose to be happier in yourapproach to life?

What does it mean to behappy? Websters dictionarysays happiness is a state ofwell-being and contentment;

joy, a pleasurable or satisfyingexperience. Gandhi says,Happiness is when what youthink, what you say, and whatyou do are in harmony. EleanorRoosevelt says, Happiness isnot a goal; it is a by-product.

What is your definition ofhappiness? Many peopleproclaim they just want to feelhappier, but does happinessmean the same thing for all ofus?

The expression of gratitudehas been shown to improve apersons set-point level ofhappiness. Take a momentand reflect on the things youare grateful for. Try to writedown five new thoughts eachday. Play I spy to encourageyourself to look around andsee the things you may notbe noticing; there are things

you do not realize you aregrateful for. Experience theworld through your senses,getting back in touch with thebasics. Use your vision, touch,taste and smell, being aware andthankful that you have them.Think grateful thoughts andlive life with an optimistic andenthusiastic attitude. Happiness

is thought to be contagious feel free to spread it.

Gratitude can be a powerfulway to change your life. Startfocusing on some thoughts,ideas, and strategies for boostingyour level of happiness. Possiblystart by socializing with happypeople. (Remember: happinessis contagious.) Laugh outloud. After all, it has beenstated that laughter is the bestmedicine. Dare to believe thatyou are a wonderful, uniqueindividual. Remember you area history event and can makean impact. Remember, life isnot a problem to be solved, buta gift. Be grateful for what you

have. Discover your personalstrengths and use them.

When we remember wehave the power to choose,we feel empowered. Whenwe feel empowered, we canactively choose how we bringabout happiness, gratitude, andoptimism. Do not settle foryour genetically pre-determinedhappiness set-point make achoice to improve your level ofhappiness.

With the cooler temperaturesarriving, many are alreadyooking ahead to the winterports season! The more

prepared you are, the better -and it doesnt happen overnight!n general, depending on yourtness status, its best to start

preparing approximately 8-12eeks prior to the seasons

opening.In physical activities that

occur on a challenging surface,great demands are placed onour sense of balance, timing,coordination, weight transfer,patial awareness, agility,uscular endurance and

power. Possible choices includekiing, snowboarding, hockey,kating and ringette, to name

a few. In addition to buildingtrong muscles, we must also

remember to maintain strongheart health and high lungcapacity for these sports.

Psychologically, its importantto participate in our physicalactivity with a secure level ofconfidence and familiarity of

the movements associated withthe sport. Ongoing trainingshould focus on those specificmovements employed in theactual sport.

Your physical training needsto include all the componentsof fitness: cardio-vascular,muscular strength/resistancetraining and flexibility. Cardiovascular (C.V.)activities should be done 3-6times/week for 30- 50 mins./

session. I always explain tomy clients that 3 times/weekoffers maintenance-mode,while 4-6 times/week focuseson progress-mode. Choicesshould place a greater demandon your heart and lungs overa sustained period of time. Indoing so, your heart and lungcapacity may be strengthened,resulting in a possible increasein your level of endurance.Remember to tack on a 10min. cardio warm-up and a 10min. cool down of stationarystretching. Resistance Training (R.T.)should occur 2-4 times/weekfor 30-60 mins./session.

Maintenance-mode wouldoccur with an R.T. workout 2times/week, while progress-mode can happen with R.T.workouts 3-4 times/week.Again, remember to begin witha 10 min. cardio warm-up andfinish with a 10 min. flexibilitycool down.Your R.T. workout should focus

on exercises to strengthen majorlower and upper body musclegroups: the gluteals, quadriceps,hamstrings, adductors andabductors (outer and innerthighs). Other exercises shouldfocus on strengthening the abs,arms (triceps, biceps), back and

shoulder (deltoids). As well,special efforts should be madeto strengthen your flexibilitywith stationary stretching at theend of your R.T. workout.

Balance, weight transferenceand spatial awareness are keyskills needed for any physicalactivity, especially those whichoccur on a compromisingsurface. When training clients,I use the Stability Ball forpromoting these skills and

for strengthening the coremuscle groups. Also, exercisesperformed on a B.O.S.U. Ballor a Fulcrum Balance Boardbring noticeable results, whilepromoting cardio enduranceand muscular strength - all at thesame time!

Consistent training needs tooccur on a regular basis. Withongoing, challenging trainingand participation, youll bemore successful in reaching,maintaining - and evensurpassing - your top physicalperformance in your sport,while avoiding the risk of injury.

Last week, I attended aninternational fitness conventionin Toronto, hosted by theCanadian Fitness Professionals.It was fantastic!! One of thenumerous seminars that Iattended focused on Womenand Weight Loss. I found theinformation can be applied toboth genders, as males are nowdieting more and more. Letslook at some of the commonthreads that are found in oursocieties.

Weight loss is- and has been-

a major focus for many of oursocieties. In North Americain the 1890s, emphasis wasput on consuming aids tocombat obesity, rather than

recognizing the co-relationand balance between propernutrition and exercise. (Priorto the 1930s, little was known,regarding portion control,food combinations and thedaily balance between goodcarbohydrates, good fats andhigh quality protein.) Backthen, weight loss productsincluded laxatives, arsenic andwashing detergent agents!

Size counts! In many worldsocieties, women are expectedto be small and skinny, focusingon size- not on health.

Instant results rule! Research

indicates that, some people-females especially exhibit theinstant gratification mentality,regarding weight loss. Insuch cases, they aim to lose

unrealistic amounts of weightwithin a self-imposed deadline.Apparently, they will try, do-and pay- ANYTHING, as longas they believe their weight lossgoal is achievable.

The importance of a realistic,ongoing exercise program is notconsidered. Research indicatesthat some women ignore thenecessary, healthy co-relationbetween energy output andenergy intake. Instead, theyfocus simply on limiting foodchoices and intake, expectingweight loss to occur. Bycontrast, others may focus on

exercising unrealistically andexcessively, in order to meltaway the pounds. Intense

and laughable contradictions.And these themes interweavea lucidity and an ambiguity

through each photograph andleave the viewer both answersand questions to the searchfor meaning and identity inthe human world and in life ingeneral.

The tone of the series is -both literally and figuratively- muted; there is a great quietin the photographs, a pervasiveloneliness and a sort of blacknostalgia. These are leavened,however, by a sly and subtlehumor. Several of the imagesrecall the 30s and 40s: in one,the figure is posed in front

of a peeling mural version ofEdward HoppersNight Hawks ,looking like a fugitive froma breadline; in another he sitsalone in a dilapidated theater,

juxtaposed so that he appearsto be kissing a projected imageof Lauren Bacall this image

evinces a tender longing. Thereis also psychic exhaustion: inone photograph the figure hassimply laid down in the grass,fully-dressed, as if in totalsurrender. This photograph alsopoints up a vein of sensuousnessthat, paralleling the humor andmitigating the tragic quality,runs through all the work.

In one of the most memorableimages in the exhibition, andthe one that is reproduced onthe librarys announcement,the artist sits on a childrensslide. The playground is barren,

bleak; there is nothing but fadedtract housing stretching into thedistance. In this scarred anddeserted landscape, the artistsits, halted mid-slide. There isa haunting, elegiac quality; asif the figure, arrested in his owndevelopment, struggles to come

to terms with the lost world ofchildhood.

Most of the photographs inthe exhibition have a similarpower; serving up cavernous,emptied spaces, they allowthe viewer to fill them up withhis own reserves of anxiouscontemplation and woundedemotion.
