THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE OF MEMPHIS APRIL 2018 Belmont Village Management Team APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS... March feels like it was a whirlwind of a month. We were certainly busy, with everything from our Purim program with Rabbi Finklestein, St. Patty’s Day party, guest speakers for the upcoming local election and the Passover holiday just to name a few. April is looking fabulous at Belmont with all the spring flowers and trees blooming. Not so good for all of you allergy sufferers, but you have to admit, it’s beautiful here. It’s spring in Memphis and when showers pop up in April, you can be sure, so do our umbrellas. They haven’t changed much over the years, and for a good reason; THEY WORK! The first umbrellas actually were parasols, used to block the sun, but the Chinese were the first to wax and lacquer paper parasols for rain protection. Here’s a sprinkling of facts about umbrellas: • The word umbrella comes from the Latin word “umbra,” meaning shade. • The oldest written reference to a collapsible umbrella dates to 21 A.D., when Chinese emperor Wang Mang had one designed for a ceremonial carriage. • In the Aztec Empire, an ornate umbrella made of feathers and gold reportedly was carried by a general and used as a flag. During the month of March our residents painted umbrellas to be displayed in the community in April. We will have an auction table where visitors can bid on the individual umbrellas. Then at the end, we will donate the money earned to the Alzheimer’s Association. Be on the lookout for more information regarding our umbrella art exhibit! CELEBRATING THEVERNAL EQUINOX(SPRING!!)

Many cultures celebratespring festivals and holidaysaround the 1st day of spring(Vernal Equinox), like Easter andPassover. However, here arealso a few more unorthodoxcelebrations.

• Balance an eggThere is an ancient Chinese

belief that you can stand an eggon its end on the first dayof spring.

The theory goes that, due tothe sun’s equidistant positionbetween the poles of the earthat the time of the equinox, special gravitational forcesapply.

• Throw some coloredpowder

Holi is an ancient Hindufestival celebrating the victoryof good over evil. It takes placeeach year around the time of thevernal equinox.

Known as the “festival ofcolors,” it is celebrated bytossing vibrant colored powdersonto each other and dancing inthe streets.

• Wear a shamrockThe symbolic plant of the

equinox in Druidry is the trefoilor shamrock, which is also

customarily worn on St. Patrick’sDay.

The shamrock is thought tobe symbolic of the regenerativepowers of nature.

• Plant seedsThe spring equinox is

symbolic of rebirth, renewal, andgrowth, and in ancient Italy, itwas traditional for women toplant seeds in the gardens ofAdonis on this day.

The custom persists in Sicily, where women plant seeds ofgrains - lentils, fennel, lettuce orflowers - in baskets and pots. When they sprout, the stalks aretied with red ribbons and theflowers are placed on graves onGood Friday, symbolizing thetriumph of life over death.

• Visit an ancient monumentMany of the world’s ancient

monuments were built asastrological calendars, to mapthe movement of the Sun overthe course of the year.

At Stonehenge in Wiltshire, the sun can be seen risingprecisely between two stones, while at Chichén Itzá in Mexico, the rising sun transforms oneedge of the giant pyramid into ablazing serpent, representingthe Mayan god Kukulcan.

PARKINSON’SDISEASE

Parkinson’s disease is aprogressive disorder of thenervous system. The disorderaffects several regions of thebrain, especially specifically theareas that control balance andmovement.

Often the first symptom ofParkinson’s disease is tremblingor shaking (tremor) of a limb, especially when the body is atrest. Typically, the tremor beginson one side of the body, usuallyin one hand. Tremors can alsoaffect the arms, legs, feet, andface. Other characteristicsymptoms of Parkinson’sdisease include rigidity orstiffness of the limbs and torso, slow movement, an inability tomove and impaired balance andcoordination. These symptomsworsen slowly over time.

Parkinson’s disease can alsoaffect emotions and cognition. Some affected individualsdevelop psychiatric conditionssuch as depression and visualhallucinations. People withParkinson’s disease also have anincreased risk of developingdementia, which is a decline inintellectual functions includingjudgment and memory.

Generally, Parkinson’s disease

that begins after age 50 is calledlate-onset disease. Thecondition is described asearly-onset disease if signs andsymptoms begin before age 50.The late-onset form is the mostcommon type of Parkinson’sdisease, and the risk ofdeveloping this conditionincreases with age.

Approximately 15 percent ofpeople with Parkinson’s diseasehave a family history of thisdisorder, however it is not fullyunderstood how geneticchanges cause Parkinson’sdisease or influence the risk ofdeveloping the disorder. ManyParkinson’s disease symptomsoccur when nerve cells die orbecome impaired. Normally, these cells produce a chemicalmessenger called dopamine, which transmits signals withinthe brain to produce smoothphysical movements. Whenthese dopamine-producingneurons are damaged or die, communication between thebrain and muscles weakens.Eventually, the brain becomesunable to control musclemovement. In most cases ofParkinson’s disease, proteindeposits called Lewy bodiesappear in dead or dyingdopamine-producing neurons. Itis unclear whether Lewy bodiesplay a role in killing nerve cellsor if they are part of the cells’response to the disease.
