Custom has it that if he sees his shadow, we will experience six more weeks of bad weather. If the day is cloudy, and he doesn’t see his shadow, spring will soon arrive. Though it may seem silly, this tradition has a long history. Early European Christians believed that on Candlemas Day, the weather signified how much more winter they had left to experience. Romans who picked up the belief apparently introduced it to the Teutons, or Germans, who added their own twist. Germans believed that if the sun appeared on Candlemas Day, an animal- the hedgehog- would cast a shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of bad weather. When Germans, began settling in Pennsylvania, they transferred their belief to the groundhog , which was common in the area and closely resembled the hedgehog. Today, Punxsutawney Phil, the famed groundhog of Punxsutawney, PA, is considered the official arbiter of how much winter is still to come each year. Here’s hoping that the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow and that winter will be over sooner rather than later. American television programs ofall time, nine of them are SuperBowls. That viewership explains

why a 30-second commercialduring the game costs several

million dollars! Advertisers oftencome up with new campaigns and

new ads premiering on thebig day.

Another big part of the big day?Eating. The Super Bowl is thesecond highest day of food

8.2 million pounds of tortillachips; 8 million pounds of

guacamole; 100 million poundsof chicken wings; and 3.8 millionpounds of popcorn on game day.

Your Brain Is FullThe next time you are slow to

remember something, considerit a sign of experience. Scientists

compare the brain to acomputer. They say all theinformation stored over alifetime is like data on the

computer’s hard drive. Olderadults take longer to recall

things simply because they haveso much more accumulated, not

because brain function isdeclining.

Signs of Alzheimer’sDisease

One of the most common signs ofAlzheimer’s is memory loss, especially forgetting recentlylearned information. Others

include forgetting important datesor events; asking for the same

information over and over;increasingly needing to rely on

memory aids (e.g., reminder notesor electronic devices) or family

members for things they used tohandle on their own.

Some people may experiencechanges in their ability to develop

and follow a plan or work withnumbers. They may have trouble

following a familiar recipe orkeeping track of monthly bills.

They may have difficultyconcentrating and take muchlonger to do things than they

did before.People with Alzheimer’s oftenfind it hard to complete daily

tasks. Sometimes, people mayhave trouble driving to a familiarlocation, managing a budget at

work or remembering the rules ofa favorite game.

People with Alzheimer’s can losetrack of dates, seasons and the

passage of time. They may havetrouble understanding something

if it is not happeningimmediately. Sometimes they mayforget where they are or how they

got there.Typical age-related changes.• Sometimes forgetting names

or appointments, butremembering them later.

Heart AttackWarning Signs

Some heart attacks are sudden andintense—the “movie heart

attacks,” where no one doubtswhat’s happening. But most heart

attacks start slowly, with mildpain or discomfort. Often peopleaffected aren’t sure what’s wrongand wait too long before getting

help. Here are signs that can meana heart attack is happening.

• CHEST DISCOMFORT –Most heart attacks involvediscomfort in the center ofthe chest that lasts more thana few minutes, or that goesaway and comes back. It canfeel like uncomfortablepressure, squeezing, fullnessor pain.

• DISCOMFORT IN OTHERAREAS OF THE UPPERBODY - Symptoms caninclude pain or discomfort inone or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

• SHORTNESS OF BREATH -with or without chestdiscomfort.

• OTHER SIGNS - may includebreaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

As with men, women’s mostcommon heart attack symptom is

chest pain or discomfort. Butwomen are somewhat more likelythan men to experience some ofthe other symptoms, particularly

shortness of breath,nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw

pain. Learn the signs, butremember this: Even if you’re not

sure it’s a heart attack, have itchecked out. Call for help

immediately; minutes matter.

We celebrate American HeartMonth by following theseguidelines to help keep your hearthealthy:

Stay fit. If you are at a healthyweight, you need only 30 minutesof moderate physical activity a dayfor heart fitness. If you areoverweight, try to shed somepounds. Reducing your weight by10 percent can lower your bloodpressure and cholesterol levels.

Sleep well. Studies show notgetting enough sleep increases therisk of heart disease and severalother major illnesses. Aim forseven to nine hours of sleepa night.

Know the score. High bloodpressure and high cholesterol candamage your heart. Regularscreenings will tell you what yournumbers are and whether youneed to take action to changethem.

Eat right. Pile on the vegetables, fruit and whole grains; eat fish atleast twice a week; and selectlow-fat dairy products. Fiber isalso important.

Be happy. Laughing stimulatesblood circulation, increasesoxygen intake and helps you relax.Watch a funny television show ormovie. Go ahead and laughout loud!
