Located on Bank Street, in the centre of the town’s thriving independent quarter, the multi award winning Delish Kitchen has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment.

As well as a new, warm, welcoming contemporary and original look, Delish has a completely new menu, showcasing locally sourced, provenance assured ingredients with all dishes lovingly prepared, from scratch, on the premises by proprietor Claire Hopkins and her dedicated team.

Old favourites, such as our range of homemade cakes and sausage rolls and artisan breads from our friends at The Revel Bakery (a finalist in the 2014 World Bread Baking Championships) appear alongside new offerings such as The Delish Burger Range, macaroni cheese plus a wide range of vegetarian and gluten free options.

In addition to a new food menu, customers can also now enjoy a carefully selected range of wines and craft beers that offer the very best quality and value for money and which are sourced from small producers committed to quality and sustainability.

Most of our beers are supplied by Warwickshire’s very own Purity Brewing Company.

Whilst many things have changed at Delish, what remains is the passion and total commitment to providing premium quality food and drink, including the very best coffee in Rugby, coupled with exceptional levels of personalized service. Claire and the Team also regularly host the incredibly successful Delish Bistro Nights, a monthly fine dining experience, which have proven so popular that these small, intimate events are sold out 2-3 months in advance.

Commencing in early November Delish, which is available for hire for private functions, will also be open to serve premium quality food and drink from our new menu for early evening diners on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the local community, Delish continues to be an enthusiastic supporter of the towns’ charitable food bank.

Welcome to The Village Emporium

January/February 2015

Alison, Clare & Sue

2015 marks a decade in business for The Village Emporium. To celebrate, throughout the year we’ll have some great local offers and will be featuring some of the businesses that have been with us since the beginning. Each issue we’ll take a brief look back at some of the key events from 10 years ago. We’ve all come a long way in 10 years and we hope you’ve enjoyed sharing the journey with us!

10 years ago...A look back at what was happening in January and February 2005.

New Year’s celebrations all over the UK fall silent for two minutes as a mark of respect for those who died in the tsunami.

Extensive flooding in Carlisle as well as other locations in Britain and many homes are without power.

YouTube, the most popular video sharing website, is founded.

Tony Blair becomes the longest-serving Labour prime minister.

The Hunting Act, the ban on hunting with dogs in England and Wales, comes into force.

USB flash drives replace floppy disks.

Feature

Black TeaBlack tea is the most common variety and accounts for about 75 percent of global tea consumption. It’s made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, which are typically rolled and fermented, then dried and crushed. It has a slightly bitter flavor and contains the most caffeine—about 40 milligrams per cup. Black tea has high concentrations of the antioxidant compounds known as theaflavins and thearubigins, which have been linked to lower levels of cholesterol.

Green TeaGreen tea has a more delicate flavor than black. The leaves are dried and heat-treated soon after they’re picked, which stops the fermentation process. It contains about 25 milligrams of caffeine per cup. Green tea is full of antioxidants called catechins. One study found that each daily cup of green tea consumed may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease by 10 percent.

Oolong TeaOolong is similar to black tea, but it’s fermented for a shorter time, which gives it a richer taste. It contains about 30 milligrams of caffeine per cup. It may aid in weight loss as it activates an enzyme responsible for dissolving triglycerides, the form of dietary fat that’s stored in fat cells. One study showed that women who drank oolong tea burned slightly more calories over a two-hour period than those who drank only water.

White TeaThese leaves are picked when they’re very young, so white tea has a much milder flavor than any other variety, not

to mention less caffeine—about 15 milligrams per cup. White tea is another health multitasker. It offers the same potential cardiovascular and cancer-fighting benefits as other teas and some research suggests that it may offer benefits to people with diabetes. An animal study found that consuming white tea resulted in improved glucose tolerance and a reduction in LDL cholesterol.

Flavoured TeaIn this category, aromatic extras, such as cinnamon, orange peel, and lavender, are paired with black, green, or white tea leaves. Flavored teas have the same levels of antioxidants and the same health benefits as unflavored ones. But skip the sweetened varieties in bottles, you’re better off without that extra sugar.

Herbal TeaTechnically, herbal teas are not teas at all—they’re usually some combination of dried fruits, flowers, and herbs. Herbal varieties contain no caffeine. Studies suggest that drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily could help lower blood pressure in people with hypertension, chamomile tea may promote sleep and that peppermint tea may calm the stomach.

Why not make it your New Year’s resultion to drink more tea!Seek out your nearest tea shop and don’t forget to take the voucher opposite!

Time for tea!Tea is the world’s most popular drink, next to water—and it’s steeped in health benefits. Here’s what six top brews could do for you.

In a large pan, sauté the onions in a small amount of olive oil over low heat until soft and fragrant, about 4-5 minutes. Add the thyme and cook one minute more. Add the tomatoes, bay leaf and the stock. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 10-15 minutes or until all the flavours have mixed. Add the cream and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the sugar if needed. Enjoy this soup chunky, or puree it to your preferred consistency using a blender. Carrot & Coriander Soup450g / 1lb of carrots sliced1 large onion, roughly chopped1 large bunch of fresh coriander, leaves roughly chopped and stalks removed1 teaspoon ground coriander1.2 litres / 2 pints vegetable stock2 tablespoons of olive oilSalt and pepper to taste

Heat up the olive oil in a frying pan to a medium heat. Add in the carrots and onion and fry for five minutes until the onions begin to soften.

Turn the ingredients whilst cooking so that the oil coats all the vegetables and they are evenly cooked. Stir in the ground (not fresh) coriander and cook for one more minute. Transfer the contents of the frying pan into a large pan. Add the salt and pepper.

Pour in the stock and bring the the mixture to a boil. Turn the heat down and simmer the soup for about 20 minutes until the carrots have softened. Liquidise the soup in a blender. It’s best if you leave some texture to the carrots rather then blending the soup to a puree.

Taste the soup and add any more salt and pepper to taste. Add the chopped fresh coriander leaves and stir them in. Serve the soup with fresh crusty bread.

World Book Day‘There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.’So said Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and in support of this philosophy, more than 100 countries worldwide will be commemorating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March. This year marks the eighteenth anniversary of the event, which is designed to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading.

How exactly the occasion is celebrated is up to the individual school or library, with ideas and resources for activities available from the website www.worldbookday.com, but regardless of the outcome, every child in participating schools will receive a book token that can be exchanged for a free book. There are ten specially selected titles on offer, with the option to use the token to receive a £1

discount on an alternative book if you prefer to choose your own.

There are many benefits to encouraging a healthy attitude towards reading from an early age. The main one is that it exercises the brain. “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body,” stated Joseph Addison. It improves concentration, builds vocabulary, develops imagination, teaches about the wider world, is a great form of entertainment and helps relax and calm the body and mind.

So, enlarge not only your child’s world but your own too, by discovering the joy of books!

BRAUNSTON TIMELINE

BRAUNSTON EVENTS

WORLD EVENTS

We know very little about early Braunston In pre-historic times the flat plain of Warwickshire was a vast inland sea, known as Lake Harrison. The Braunston Ridge is made of a mudstone called Charmouth Mudstone. Just to the east are the classic Jurassic Limestones In this case it is iron rich giving it the distinctive Northamptonshire red colour. A narrow ridge of land jutted westwards from the Northamptonshire uplands towards the lower ground and it was on this commanding position that Braunston eventually grew up. Fresh water flowed from springs and from the Bragborough stream It would have been a good place for pre-historic people to live.

It seems that at one end of the ridge where the church now stands there was a tumulus and a circular burial ground, and at the other a round house, traditionally a beacon house to guide travellers where ancient track ways met.

Centuries later when records first began Braunston was a self supporting, rural community. Most of the population worked as farmers, blacksmiths, graziers, shepherds and the like. There were also bakers, innkeepers, various shopkeepers and a host of cottage craftspeople to support the villagers.

FIRST MANNED MOON LANDING

The meeting of track ways brought external influences from visitors and trade. Later, the coaching road between London and Chester became a turnpike road, increasing traffic and stimulating services for travellers and additional trade. At one time there were eight blacksmiths and several inns.

The Oxford Canal arrived in 1774 By 1850, due to the coming of the canal, the village had grown and become a busy and successful place. Occupations expanded considerably to include boatbuilders, brickmakers, ropemakers, coal merchants, boatmen and women, canal clerks, canal labourers, leggers, lock keepers and many more.

Despite competition from the railway, which arrived in Braunston in 1895, the twentieth century opened on a hopeful note for the canal industry but two world wars made it a turbulent century. Canal freight all but ceased, but leisure boating began, bringing yet further change to Braunston.

Buy local, sell localBuying local is as important to Napton Village Stores as selling local – as the saying goes ‘we are what we eat’. They are very fortunate to have a range of local suppliers, everything from village vegetable growers, to free range eggs, to farm bred rare breed pigs and water buffalo, – all within a couple of miles of the store. They also have a local produce table, customers bring in fresh seasonal produce for them to sell.

Services convenient for modern lifeThe Post Office has been relaunched as a local service with the counter now open the same hours as the shop. You can post your letters and parcels at a time to suit you; even on a Sunday morning – no more rushing to get to the Post Office before it closes at 5.00 pm.

Why not pop in to discover everything a local store should offer under one roof and so much more. Napton Village Stores are open Mon to Sat 7am to 7pm and Sun 8am to 2pm.

Napton Village Stores and Post Office was bought by a local family in January 2014 and 12 months on their plan to turn it into an essential hub of the local community is paying off.

Napton KitchenThe store itself has had a complete refresh and the ‘Napton Kitchen’ has been introduced. Enjoy fresh daily home-made soup and cakes, filled rolls straight from their bakery and a lovely selection of hot savoury pastries, croissants and pain au chocolat baked on the premises every morning. The kitchen can also bake to order with 30 minutes notice, many customers phone ahead to ensure they get the fresh baked bread they want including specialities like rye and olive bread. You can’t get much fresher than that! They also have a very nice coffee machine that makes fabulous cappuccino, latte, espresso and hot chocolate. The Napton Kitchen has become a meeting place for the community as well as a well

Lovely cosy feel, warm and welcoming. Something for everyone. A real ‘drop in anytime’ feel. Friendly staff.

So good being able to get freshly baked bread and home grown vegetables. A pleasure to visit.

Friendly service, decent mug of coffee and choice of tasty homemade cakes and savouries. Strawberry cake was gorgeous! Shop is well stocked for food supplies and papers.

A four pawed health kick for 2015!New Year is often a time when people think about their health and resolutions to go to the gym or start a diet are made (and subsequently broken!). One thing that many people are unaware of is the health benefits of having a dog in the home.

These benefits go far beyond the physical improvements associated with gym membership or dieting. Writing in the British Journal of Health Psychology Dr Deborah Wells reviewed a number of previous research papers concluding that dog ownership can be shown to help prevent us from becoming ill, facilitate recovery from ill-health, reduce levels of anxiety, loneliness and depression as well as enabling greater social interaction for owners. Health psychologist Dr June McNicholas agrees with this final point, observing that the opportunity for social interaction that comes with having a dog is a major reason for the increased health in dog owners while adding that,

“For older people, an animal can fulfil the ‘need to be needed’, perhaps after children have left home. In some cases, the social support offered by an animal is greater than the support another human could offer.”

Dog ownership obviously brings with it a large amount of responsibility and commitments something that many, for a number of reasons, are unwilling or unable to take on. You don’t necessarily have to own a dog to gain these benefits as many charities are often looking for puppy walkers or dog foster families.

Sandra Reeves took another route and joined dog boarding company Wagging Tails as a dog carer. She now welcomes guest dogs into her home for their holidays when their owners go away and in addition to the health benefits of having dogs around also receives a small payment for looking after her four-legged guests.

“It is a great opportunity to meet so many different types of dogs and characters. It provides me with lots of long walks and I get to meet so many other dog owners when out and about, making lots of new friends in the process.”

These days, in the face of climate change, we often hear of the impact that a rise in average global temperature has on our native wildlife. Studies by the British Trust for Ornithology indicate that many garden birds are beginning to nest a week earlier than they were fifty years ago. However, there are some bird species that have always been ‘early nesters’ and such activity can often be observed as early as January and February.

The rook is a prime example. A member of the crow Corvus family; the rook is very much like a crow in appearance, but whilst the crow is somewhat solitary, the rook is a very social bird and nests communally. Rook nests are found grouped together (around 12- 30 nests) towards the very top of large trees and are often easily spotted due to the raucous presence of these birds. It is easy to see how the structure of these rookeries gave rise to the collective nouns for a group of rooks: a building, a parliament. Although it is the vocal nature of these birds that perhaps gave rise to my personal favourite: storytelling.

Speaking of which, a colleague of mine reliably informs me that such birds will communally defend their nests by defecating on anyone that stands beneath their rookery. A pretty effective strategy against man, I expect!

Rooks are at their most vocal during courtship, which is at this time of year. Indeed, as a keen naturalist from the 1940’s once noted “”rooks, in the

breeding season attempt sometimes, in the gaiety of their hearts, to sing, but with no great success”. Look out for the male strutting his stuff and bowing before his desired mate whilst spreading his wings and tail and emitting a loud ‘caw’.

A rook will build its nest by snapping twigs off trees (or stealing them from other nests) and adding a bit of mud before lining it with wool, hair or a bit of grass. Typically, they will re-use their old nest but not before giving it a good spring-clean, and this can start as early as January.

Old crow and rook nests are frequently re-used by birds of prey, such as kestrel or hobby. In fact, birds of prey are another group of ‘early nesters’, with many of them beginning to nest as early as February, and for good reason. If their chicks hatch before the vigour of spring growth kicks in, the adult birds can more readily see, hear and catch the small rodents on which they feed their young.

So be on the lookout for the courtship sights and sounds of these ‘early nesters’ in January and February. In the meantime, why not do a little spring-cleaning yourself and clear out any old nesting material from your bird boxes to rid them of any parasites? This will give your regular garden birds a head start for the coming spring.
