Decorating the Main Street with Christmas Trees etc.for the Festive SeasonAs always, we are looking for volunteers to help with this annualevent. This year we hope to prepare as many trees as possible onFriday 30th November in the afternoon from about 2.00.pm in theKing’s Head car park.

The more we can get done in advance the less time it takes to putthem up on the morning of Saturday 1st December. Once again,we are looking for volunteers and meeting at the King’s Head carpark. This time from about 9.30.am. So, if you are willing to climbladders with a group of others please come along and lend a hand.

Having put them up they will need to be taken down again. This weanticipate being done on 5th January, an again, we are looking forvolunteers and meeting at the King’s Head car park. This time fromabout 9.30.am. also. Once down, everything needs to be tidied upand stored away. So, even if you don’t like ladders, you could stillhelp.

Now, I’m not being discriminatory when I say we are looking foryoung, fit volunteers, but I suggest you ought to be younger andfitter than me. But that’s not hard!! So please come along and help.

CHACEWATER RIGHTS OF WAY (CROW) WALKSUNDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2018

The CRoW walking group just about cracked the weather again thismonth as we stepped out from the car park as usual on Sunday the4th for a healthy morning walk, following a heavy overnightdownpour that continued later in the afternoon. About 13 degreesand with hardly any wind to speak of, whilst everyone cameprepared for the worst, the majority ended up carrying their foulweather clothing or tying it round the waist.

Where did we go then? Well, on this occasion we decided on a littlebit of mountaineering (not literally!) as we wanted to discover a fewthings up along the steep sided valley that takes the walker up towhat is referred to locally as the “Bissoe High Road”. So off wewent down towards Twelveheads for about half a mile beforeslipping off left beside Wheal Prosper Farm and up on Silver PublicFootpath 301/70/1. A tough hill especially with mud on boots andleaf fall all around, the views here were quite breath taking thoughand so all was well worth it.

A much needed breather taken half way up the hill(Public Footpath 301/70/1) from Wheal Prosper, nearRose Farm where the views across the valley below

are just wonderful. P.T.O.

Turning sharp right at the top as the pathway meets the road, weturned almost immediately right again to come straight back downagain on the Silver Public Bridleway 301/71/1 which eventuallybrings you out just beside Willow Bridge Cottage, over the woodenbridge and out onto the Twelveheads Road once more. It wasterrific to see the good works recently undertaken by Cormac’sEnvironmental team along this particular bridleway which suffershugely from erosion – however, the early signs are that more workwill be required in this area in future months!

Cutting back towards Chacewater, we then took the first PublicFootpath up on the left (Bronze 301/40/1) which eventually comesout near Wheal Harmony Cottage. Seeing that the Footpath signhad long since disappeared, thanks again to Cormac Environment,we were able to put another up – maintenance is key you know!

Time was moving on by this point, so a Team decision was taken tohead straight back to Chacewater village, passed Rising Sun anddown onto the Twelveheads Road once again and passing Littleand Lower Chacewood as we went. All in all, another mostpleasant walk in great company and great weather. All who keenlyscaled the hillsides certainly deserved to wrap up warm and read abook or paper in front of the fire that afternoon!

The last CRoW walk of 2018 will leave the Square CarPark at 9.30am, Sunday 2nd December 2018, so see youthere – it’s a really good way to build up to Christmas. Don’tforget to look on line for the Chacewater element of thecornwalltrails.net website – just 3 of many!

A Christmas Message from Rev’d Richard WallisI love this time of year. There is a buzz in the air, an anticipation, excitement for the season that is to come. Shops are full to burstingwith tinsel, fairy lights, the smells and sounds of Christmas. On thetelly, adverts abound encouraging us to buy their produce, askingus to believe that only they can provide the perfect gift or thatsignature dish that amazes everyone. Others promote theirmeaning of the season, be it old men on the moon, boxer dogs on atrampoline or a snowman looking for his sweetheart.

It is also a time when people across our country, and around theworld plan the annual pilgrimage home. No matter where they are, there is an instinctive desire to be at home, to be with family andfriends. In those days before Christmas, journeys are made, carsloaded with gifts. At service stations, brightly coloured jumpers ofelves, snowmen and of course Santa adorn those pilgrims. There isan intentionality in their actions, the journey costing much, in time, effort and money. People smile at strangers, being more patientand accepting of others, as it is the season of good will after all.

Each family has its own traditions. The buying of the bumper issueof the Radio Times, then marking the films and Christmas specialsthey want to watch. Some open their presents on Christmas Eve,most open them on Christmas morning, and those with better self-control wait until after the Queen’s Speech. For our family we havea tradition of attending the late church service on Christmas Eve.

It is a wonderful event. The church looks stunning, glowing like goldin the candle light. With pews full, people singing, the sound of thecarols makes me tingle. Then there is a sense of that presence.Something, a peace, a stillness, a sense of well-being. Some - andI am one - would say that is the presence of God. In that moment inthat place we gather to give thanks for God’s son, Jesus Christ. Werecall that God chooses to dwell with us as our God. It is a specialmoment, a highlight of our Christmas.

This year as you plan your journeys, and recall those familytraditions, consider adding that extra Christmassy feeling by take

part in the whole experience, and join with us on Christmas Eve. Atime to give thanks for our friends and our families, for those whohave made a special journey to be with us, and for those we havetravelled great distances to be with. An opportunity to sit within thepresence of God.

Whatever your plans, may the peace of God be with you, and allthose you love this Christmas season.

JENNY''S GARDEN PATCH ~ DECEMBERDecember already, the year has really flown by. I hope you all had asuccessful year in your gardens. This is a good time to look back overthe gardening year at the projects that succeeded and how to changethose that didn’t go quite to plan!It is a good time also while the weather is not so good to plan ahead for thecoming year, look through the seed catalogues or get out your gardening booksfor inspiration.

PLANT OF THE MONTHPRIMULAS

Primula derives from the Latin word for "early." Most primroses produce aground-hugging rosette of greenery, and their roundedflowers have five petals each. Their leaves range fromthick, smooth, and waxy to narrow, hairy, and toothed. Some species bear one flower per stem while others havedome-shaped or rounded clusters of flowers on each stem. The familiar wild, pale yellow, single primrose is one ofthe early signs of spring, coinciding with the first earlydaffodils. Cultivated varieties come in a huge range ofcolours, and both single and double flowers.

DECEMBER IN THE GARDEN● Protect plants and pots from frost by placing inside or wrapping in horticultural

fleece● Continue to tidy the borders removing dead foliage and debris and cutting back

overgrown plants● Treat paths for ice to avoid any nasty accidents.● Feed the birds, break the ice on the birdbath if frozen.● Don’t add fertiliser or plant food at this time of year as it could promote early

growth that would be affected by frost and freezing winds.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and aHappy New Year.If you require any horticultural help please come along to Chacewater Garden Centreand meet the friendly and helpful staff.

Thank you so much to Bolingey for your support of children’scharities in Cornwall over the years since your formation in 1993.

A Christmas message from Adrian MitchellPastor of Chacewater Methodist Church.

Do you know what? I was thinking the other day; how wonderfulmince pies are! I had been given some mince pies as a gift and as Isat munching away on one, I thought to myself what an amazing giftI had been given.

It is great to give and receive gifts isn’t it? And I guess this is ‘theseason’ for gifts, very soon many more will be exchanged andopened with smiles, laughter and great joy. This is the ‘reason forthe season’ as 2000 years ago another gift was given in great joy...

The angel said to them, “Don't be afraid! I am herewith good news for you, which will bring great joy toall the people. This very day in David's town yoursaviour was born—Christ the Lord!” Luke 2:10-11.

This Christmas, if things in your life are going a bit wonky or if youfind yourself feeling lonely or if you’re noticing more and more thatsomething is really missing from your Christmas; why not open upGod’s gift; and receive Jesus; the light and hope of the world. There is no finer gift to receive because with Jesus in your life, anew purposeful and positive direction is possible and then you mayjust find that your life begins to receive the peace of God.

What can I give him, poor as I am?If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb;If I were a wise man I would do my part;Yet what I can, I give him – give my heart.(In the bleak midwinter).

I wonder if I could have two mince pies? Is that allowed? After all itis Christmas! Perhaps I’ll try just one more and as I do; may I takethis opportunity, along with everyone at the three valley MethodistChurches, to wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas, aprosperous New Year, and may the blessing of God be with younow and always.Adrian is the Lay Pastor for Chacewater, Twelveheads and Hicks Mill Methodistchurches and a Local Preacher in the Truro Methodist Church Circuit.

CHACEWATER PARISH NEIGHBOURHOODDEVELOPMENT PLANMONTHLY UPDATEMore significant milestones were reached in the world ofNeighbourhood Development Planning last month which enabled usto continue along our chosen pathway. The pre-submissionconsultation period - launched on Saturday the 15th September tocoincide with the Renewable Energy Day in view of likely number ofattendees - was a huge success. There then followed a series ofpublic engagement events at numerous venues across the Parish, including: Primary School assembly, the Bowling Club, Bon Appetitand Sunday School at Twelveheads, Blackwater Village Hall,Chacewater Garden Centre, the monthly coffee morning and theOld Market. Quick Guides were handed to anyone who wanted oneand most events were sustained with Cornish Cream Teas. Wealso set up a Comments Table in the Village Hall. In all, about 500people were either briefed or passed by our consultation stances orread the literature presented, which was a real positive.

In parallel with this activity, the NDP Team emailed or wrote toabout 50 statutory outside bodies (e.g. Cornwall Wildlife Trust(CWT), D&C Police, First Group, Historic England, etc.) some ofwhom provided useful comments in response,

which we are now collating for inserting into the Plan itself.

Once this task is complete, all that remains is for the Team to:

 Proof read the Master document.

Work up a Parish Design Guide for the area.

Collate the evidence base for submission by16th November.

The submission itself will actually include a huge amount of workbecause we also have to submit both a comprehensiveConsultation Statement and even more detailed Basic ConditionsStatement. Both documents provide proof to a “selected” externalexaminer that we have done our job and can move towards ourNDP Referendum date, which – fingers crossed – will be the end ofMach 2019!

Assuming we achieve all the deadlines required, I think it only rightto acknowledge the hugely commitment made by some extremelycommitted volunteers from across the Parish. THANK YOU!

A document “For the Community by the Community”, the aimhas always been to protect our special place from

overdevelopment so let’s hope we can achieve that objective.

VILLAGEPONDWATCH

NOVEMBER 2018

Beside the pond a slender, sheltered willow has escaped an earlyfrost; but the leaves of hawthorn, elm and aspen trees are yellow, while the ash and sycamore have lost theirs. Two blackbirds jostlefor position among the bare branches and a lone Jay makes hisway up to the highest bough.Below, the pond lies very quiet, in Cornish colours, velvet blackand splashed with golden discs of fallen leaf. The dark waters arequite clear and a thick layer of leaf litter covers the bottom.Underneath, a water beetle scuttles through a patch of weeds andtwo newts reveal greasy grey sides as they rapidly weave theirway downwards.

Small insects dance in the sunlit air and sometimes touch thesurface - where a curled, dry leaf is blown across by a sudden gustof wind. All the trees are naked now (except for trunks wrappedtight in ivy green) and bramble leaves are spotted black andyellowing. Winter is coming.

Local Government NewsDear Reader

Firstly, what an amazing Bonfire Night we had on Guy FawkesNight. The weather was not good over the weekend when severalother local events had to be cancelled, but on the 5th November theweather was mild and dry and evening such a success. Thefireworks, many have said were the best display that we have hadin Chacewater and we must particularly congratulate all those whoset them up, let them off safely, built the bonfire, served food, manned the gate and generally organized the event. It wasfantastic display and enjoyed by all who spectated, as always, manyorganizations pulled together to make it a great event.

Sometimes I write this article in stages and am now writing this onthe day after Remembrance Sunday which fell on Armistice Day.No one could have failed to notice what a special commemorationthis year has been, as all events and the media have concentratedon the horrors of the First World War and how the armistice wascalled on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventhmonth of 1918, a hundred years ago. The peace that was hopedwould end all wars, but as we know that was not the case.Chacewater did, as it has done for many years, held a movingservice jointly with the Methodist Church at St Paul’s Church. At theWar Memorial the names of citizens of Chacewater who lost theirlives in the wars were read out. It was privilege to lay a wreath onbehalf of Cornwall Council along-side Mr. Martin Stephens,Chairman, on behalf of the Parish Council, followed by differentorganizations, it was a very sincere Remembrance Service.

Cornwall Council Cabinet is still involved in setting the budget whichmeans how much it will charge you and me – ratepayers byincreasing our rates next year. As a Council we have a duty tomaintain what are known as essential services or often referred toas “fixed costs” and these must be set by the February 2019 inorder to be implemented on 1st April 2019. We will need to wait andsee what their proposals are.

P.T.O.

Cornwall also owns and lets out farms of various sizes across thecounty, and last week as I write three of us on two following days lettwo very different farms, one known as a “starter farm” of 47 acresand the other one of 300 acres, both of which we let for twentyyears. This work I find very interesting as my lifetime has beenspent in agriculture.

Locally, one still chases potholes and with the torrential rain that wehave recently experienced, drains blocked with fallen leaves. Withour steep hills, water flows quickly and the leaves block drains, but Ifind Cormac are responsive and act effectively to enable our roadsto be kept open.

All I have to do to bring this article to a conclusion is to wish everyReader a very happy Christmas and in anticipation thank everyoneinvolved in making the celebrations in the village bright andcheerful.

if I can be of any help or support to you, please contact me.

Chacewater Football ClubHaving started the season with four home games, we are now into arun of only one home match in eleven matches! This has not beenhelped by being drawn away in three cup competitions and then, having won at Newlyn in the Cornwall Junior Cup, we were drawnaway again in the next round. At least the Recreation Ground getsa rest whilst we all had a period of torrential rain and very strongwinds and, as we play home and away in the league, we will havesome home matches to look forward to after Christmas.

As regards the results, in the league we won 2-0 at Madron, bothgoals coming from James Martin and lost 3-2 at Hayle 3rds whereDarren Bennetts and Stuart Rowe were on target. The other twogames involved cup ties, we lost 6-0 in the Cornwall Junior Cup atHelston 3rds, who play four leagues higher than ourselves and 3-0at Ruan Minor, who are two leagues higher, in the Percy StephensCup.

Thank you to all who turned out to support the club's prize bingoevening held recently at the Village Hall. This was very successfuland we are hoping to hold another early in the New Year.

Recreation Ground RecoveryBulb Planting And Volunteers RecognisedA selection of Chacewater Parish community volunteers wererecognised for their efforts to regenerate the western end of theRecreation Ground at an enjoyable evening at Heartlands onThursday 25th October.

The What’s On readership may recall that work to improve thisspace started during a baking hot mid-July that saw members ofHighways England lend “several hands” to get rid of years ofunwanted growth. Locals with other skills also made a table andseats out of old pallets and we re-discovered the old sand pit thathas since been turned into a bed for hardy shrubs. The ivy that wasgrowing uncontrollably and strangling many of the trees was

also removed - so much so in fact that if a young child were to listenvery carefully, they might just be able to hear one or two of the treesbreathing a little more easily!

The last month or so has seen further efforts to dig out hundreds ofbramble roots and seed much of the area with what is known as“shade grass”. On Friday the 2nd November the children from ourCommunity Primary School also donned wellies and jackets to plantdaffodil bulbs around significant stretches of the Recreation Groundboundary - so fingers firmly crossed that these will flower in Springand create a wave of yellow, white and green.

At the Cornwall CommunityCelebration Awards evening on the25th October, the Chacewater teamwere recognised as a “very activegroup who undertake a number ofenvironmental projects includingplanting, improving neglected greenspaces and leat clearing. They alsopossess the art of turning palletsinto beautiful tables and chairs”.

A fitting tribute and a HUGE THANKS to all involved.
