YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN(NDP)MONTHLY UPDATEBy the time this article goes to press, we will hopefully havereceived feedback from Cornwall Council on our First Cut Draft ofthe Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) as well asconfirmation on whether we need to undertake a StrategicEnvironmental Assessment (SEA) – we hope not incidentally!

If the timing then goes according to plan, between the 26th Augustand 14th September, the NDP Team will make the requiredamendments to the Master document, refine a few associatedsubmissions and prepare for a 6-week period of PublicConsultation.

Again, if all things go to plan, the start of the 6-weekNeighbourhood Development Plan Public Consultation periodwill coincide and merge in with our much anticipatedChacewater Energy Day, which takes place in and around theVillage Hall from 2.00 to 5.00pm on Saturday 15th September.

Kernow Microscopical SocietyThe next meeting of the Kernow Microscopical Society will be onSaturday September 15th in the Killifreth room at Chacewatervillage hall at 1.30pm. Under the microscope. we shall be exploringbees and in particular their legs!

If you are interested, do come along. You don't need to have amicroscope. Our meetings focus on the practical aspects ofmicroscopy; we try to have workshops, using microscopes andexploring methods of preparing specimen slides to view. Ourmembers include professional microscopists who can assist withqueries on instruments and microscopical techniques.

In July, various members presented a topic of their choosing. Wesaw some interesting pollens; a pine pollen which was germinatedon wet blotting paper and pollen from a 12ft flower spike of fucrea(giant agave look-alike). We were shown an antique double-bladedscalpel for cutting slices and some very interesting Victorian slidesfrom the collection of a Penzance doctor who studied algae. Therewere also slides of the seabed from soundings taken during thelaying of the first transatlantic cable in 1855 and slides fromsoundings from the Red Sea for the cable joining Britain to India andAustralia.

We are currently actively searching for new members and would bevery happy to welcome you.

Have a look at our 2018 events diaryat http://kernowmicroscopy.webplus.net to see our meetings for therest of the year. You can also email usat [email protected].

ResignationIt is with regret that the Parish Council had to accept the resignationof Jim Holford on Friday evening.

Jim has been a very active member of the Chacewater ParishCouncil since coming to the village, always ready to volunteer oreven help out with his tractor if appropriate. He will certainly bemissed by his fellow councillors. I for one will miss his contributionsand counsel during debates.

We all wish him well in his future endeavours and extend to him ourgrateful thanks for all that he has done.

This now leaves the Council with three vacant seats and we wouldbe delighted to hear from anyone who would like to consider joiningus, come a long and sit in at one of our meetings and get a feel ofwhat it is all about.

Western End of Recreation Ground Regenerated forCommunity Use

Following a good deal or planning and a few days of hard graft -primarily on the 18th and 19th July - a long awaited project to clear up

and regenerate thewestern end of theRecreation Ground hasbeen given a much-needed boost and willsoon become an areafor everyone to enjoy. In broad order, the planwas to:

Remove and disposeof the dense bramble,

The western end of the Recreation Ground hadsuffered from an overgrowth of unwanted foliage

down the years and needed to be cleared

Page 25: The views expressed in this publication are those of the author of … · 2018. 9. 9. · Mon. 10th 7.30.pm Teens & Adults Auditions for Chorus & Speaking parts for Chacewater Players

25

ivy and any other unwanted growth that had basically smothered thearea down the years.

Rediscover the old sand pit and turn it into a bed of low maintenanceshrubs.

Redefine the area behind the football goalmouth netting to enable thecopper beech saplings to grow unhindered.

Introduce some simple but robust seating to the area so that membersof the community can sit and either watch the football, take a picnic orjust admire the surrounding landscape.

One of the many “spin-off” projects identified through theNeighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) – which in this instancesought to enhance a public green space for community use – noneof this would have been achieved without the exceptional efforts ofsome key individuals from within and outside our community, who need to be thanked:

Day One - Dressed and ready to go!

26

Firstly, Jim Holford (who has sadly since moved away from the village)started us off by flailing the area, which cut the job in half from the getgo!

Then there was Danny Konik from the Cormac Solutions Ltd, who pro-vided the Community Tool Trolley and helped dispose of a great dealof green waste.

Nigel Jewel, Brian Charles and Nathan Carter from the football clubcleared a large area between the pavilion and store before SimonBlake got in there and broke down wood into more manageable sizesfor household use.

Tony Reynolds provided a great deal of the practical sense, industryand light machinery to clear significant swathes of growth down to rootlevel.

Neal and Duncan from Chacewater Garden Centre offered us sometop soil for the sand pit and the pallets that Paul Shevlin and SteveLeech then transformed into a robust table, some benches and furthercompost bins – they did much more.

With a bit of heavy machinery at times!

Page 27: The views expressed in this publication are those of the author of … · 2018. 9. 9. · Mon. 10th 7.30.pm Teens & Adults Auditions for Chorus & Speaking parts for Chacewater Players

Angie Beckham provided a mini tiller machine to dig up the compactedclay in the sand pit and (with the help from Gill Knill) continued theweeding effort.

Lastly, we received some outstanding help from another mostunlikely volunteer source; a dozen or so members of the HighwaysEngland (HE) team responsible for delivering the future A30 dualcarriageway works between the roundabouts from Carland Cross toChiverton Cross; which will do so much to improve our transportconnectivity in the years ahead. Drawn from offices as far asWales, Exeter and Bristol, senior management and staffcame down, quite literally mucked in and experienced a bit oflife in our area. Sustained by the odd pasty from the Bakery,

The new plantation in the oldsand pit Clearing the overgrown area

...and look at the end result!

their vigour and commitment over 2 days in the baking sun, alongside the local team, had to be seen to be believed. Equallyimportant, friendships were forged that will hopefully belongstanding and hopefully see members of the HE team re-visit asite that has been so transformed by their efforts.

So, what is planned for this area of the Rec now? Well, now wehave cleared the area, made good and planted a few shrubs tomake the old sand pit - the main feature - we need to keep on top ofthe weed growth until the await the autumn period in particular. Atthat point, we will sow what is known as “shade” grass seed alongthe banks and under the trees, with a view to encouraging its use asa relaxing recreation space.

What can you, the Community do to help? Well, it’s all rathersimple really. Sit and enjoy this facility but occasionally considerbringing a pair of gardening gloves and secateurs to keep the ivyand brambles at bay – the compost bins are pretty close by, so youwould not need to dispose of anything yourself.

Anexhaustedteam take awell-earnedrest at the

end of Day 2.

Photos were taken of before and after but not included here. Sowhy not take a stroll to that area to admire the difference for yourselfand give thanks to the hard work done by all these volunteers.

JENNY''S GARDEN PATCH ~ SEPTEMBERAnother month has flown by and Autumn is just around the corner. Hopefully yourgardens are still looking good and the food crops are coming in thick and fast. Septemberis a busy month with plenty of jobs that need doing, gathering in your crops, tiding upand new plantings

PLANT OF THE MONTHDAFFODIL

Daffodil, also known as narcissus and jonquil, is a type of flowering plant that belongs to the Amaryllisfamily. Grown in masses they are a delightful sight, and with colours ranging from white and yellow

through to pink, there's a daffodil for every garden. Daffodils are normally availablefrom mid August onward, and are best planted at that time, but planting can beextended right through to end of October. Even if planted in November, they willnot disappoint in the following spring. The most important thing when planting daffodils is to plant them at the correctdepth. As a basic guide the depth want to be 3 times the length of the bulb e.g. ifthe bulb is 2 inches, they should be planted at a depth of 6 inches. However, it isbetter to err on the side of planting more deeply. Planting them more deeply makes

it less likely they will dry out.

SEPTEMBER IN THE GARDEN

■ Buy or make a compost bin to take autumn debris.■ Plant new perennials.■ Remove spent summer annuals and replace with spring bedding such as wallflowers and

forget-me-nots.■ Plant spring-flowering bulbs in beds, borders, pots and grass.■ Plant prepared bulbs for indoor flowering around Christmas■ Sow hardy annuals, such as marigolds, centaurea and California poppies.■ Begin moving tender plants into sheltered positions or into the greenhouse or

conservatory.■ Carry out autumn lawn maintenance, including aerating, scarifying, top dressing and

feeding. Reseed bare patches, and create new lawn from seed.■ Plant garlic, winter lettuce, turnips, spring cabbages and autumn onion sets in the

vegetable garden.■ Prune climbing roses when they've finished flowering, removing dead, damaged and

diseased stems.■ Lift and divide congested clumps of herbaceous perennials..■ Cut back the canes on summer-fruiting raspberries

Have a great month in your gardens, we might even be lucky and have an Indian Summer. If youwould like any further information come along to Chacewater Garden Centre and have a chat with anyof the helpful and friendly staff.Jenny Matthews (Manageress)

VILLAGE PONDWATCH – AUGUST 2018

The water is still too murky to seemuch below the surface. SinceJune, grass snakes have stirred-upsediment while hunting the pondbottom. Early in August a medium-sized grass snake (70 – 80cm)swam out of the shadows andpaused to bask in the morningsunlight. Ten minutes later, heswam across to the south shore showing signs of a successful hunt. One third down from head to tail, the body bulged to twice itsusual girth for some 10–15 cm as it floated in sunshine with hishead resting on a raft of weed.

A great silver diving beetle broke the surface, its shiny black backthe size of a brazil nut, stirring and shaking the water lily leaves.Water boatmen also continually ripple the surface. As the waterclears a little after rainfall, one or two slender water stick insectsemerge with beady eyes looking for prey.

Yellow fringed water lilies bloom abundantly across the pond.On the bankside the flowers of purple loosestrife and commonknapweed also attract a steady stream of carder and red-tailedbumble bees, beetles and hoverflies. Heavy crops of blackberriesare swelling and wasps feed on over-ripe fruit. Honey bees, asmall copper and blue butterflies frequent yellow heads of ragwort.

Different habitats across the Millennium Green give food andshelter to a great variety of wildlife including at least a dozenspecies of butterfly. When the wind blows, many dragonflies anddamselflies take refuge in long grass or up in the trees. On warm

and quieter days they return to the pond. Red darters hold stationsaround the edge and fiercely guard their territory. An Emperordragonfly brushes them aside to hunt and large southern hawkerslay eggs among the reeds.

Roseland House, Chacewater

On Saturday 15th September the Garden and National collection ofLapageria rosea, held here at Roseland House, Chacewater, will beopen free of charge between 1pm and 5pm

Lapageria rosea is the National flower of Chile and was introducedto Cornwall (and the rest of the UK) by William Lobb in 1848.

William Lobb was the gardener at Scorrier House before he washired by the Veitch Nursery based in Exeter and tasked withcollecting various plants which included both Lapageria and MonkeyPuzzle trees.

He boarded HM Packet Seagull, which was to set sail fromFalmouth on 7 November 1840 bound for Brazil, it seemsextraordinary that he then walked across South America to get toChile

His brother Thomas was also a Plant collector for the VeitchNursery, between the two of them many of our garden plants werebecause of their collections.

Local Government News. ChacewaterDear ReaderI suppose that although the work of the Council goes on, August is atime when we all think of holidays and the weather until recently hasbeen brilliant for people to enjoy our wonderful Cornish landscapeand beaches as well as all the outdoor activities that it offers. However, for farmers, the shortage of grass has become a veryserious issue for the production of milk and also in this part of thecounty “green vegetables” e.g. cabbage, cauliflowers etc so for theapproaching winter these items are bound to become moreexpensive. Overall it is a good job that we cannot control theweather because no one of us would in the end be happy.

Back to Council business in Chacewater. There has been, (I amvery glad to say “has been”) electricity problems at the BrooksideFlats, both internally and externally with lighting which is both ofvision and security not been good. I am glad to day that thereissues have now been resolved. Cornwall Council have also agreedthat in the future these flats will be offered to people of over 55years of age, so if any Chacewater person knows of a suitableapplicant of that age who requires a home, please get in touch withme (details at the end of this article).

The Local Neighbourhood plan team are forging ahead with a localfuture plan for Chacewater, so please be prepared to give time andsupport these ideas, as it gives every resident the opportunity tohave a say and part in planning what Chacewater should be like inthe longer term.

There are several planning applications in Chacewater at themoment and two enforcement issues that I am dealing with.

To end on a seasonal item, I think any Harvest Festival Serviceshould have a few sheaves of wheat to help decorate a countryChurch and to that end it gave me pleasure to be able to stopBeatrice’s nephew as he was driving his combine harvester and

Time to retire! After 40 years of continuous fundraising, raising tens of thousands of pounds, formany projects it's finally time to call it a day. Age (79) and health have caughtup with me and on behalf of all my supporters can I personally thank all theCompanies, local and national, Businesses, Trusts, Councils, Grant authoritiesthat have over many years given me and my committees the funding andsupport to carry on, the committee members including myself and secretarieswere all voluntary and every penny raised went direct to the project worked onat that particular time. I can't thank them enough for all their support andinput.

Groups and local organisations helped include Age concern, Shelter box, RNIB,Animal hospital, Mini bus appeal, Children's Hospice S.W., Churches, Chapels,Play Groups, School's clubs. Bands, Choirs, and several individual personalappeals, it gives me great pleasure, seeing the many groups, charities stillcarrying on today with their good work. ^

To finalise by the end of this financial year 20l8 I would like to completeone or two outstanding projects so any help for one final time with either adonation, made out to ‘Four Lanes Projects’, gift cards, vouchers, tickets, everything, as in the past, will be acknowledged.
