PBL News

Rule of the week Week 2 – Respect – I listen attentively Week 3 – Be Safe – I am in the right area

Principal’s Message

Stewart House

Everyone should have received a stewart house clothing

bag before the holidays. Can you please make sure that

you return these to school by the 5th November. If anyone

needs an extra bag please come to the front office.

Welcome to Term 4. I’m sure you will all wish Mr Leydon a

relaxing break in New Zealand. He will be returning to the

school at the beginning of Week 4.

By now parents of students in Year 3 and Year 5 should have

their NAPLAN results. We have some very strong results as

well as some things to work on. You need to remember that

it is a snapshot of how your child performed on literacy and

numeracy tests on one day. Some children do not perform

well in multiple choice tests or by being under pressure. At

Beresford Road we do not teach to the test. We think it is

more important to teach the curriculum. If you have any

questions about interpreting your child’s results, feel free to

come and see me or your child’s teacher.

Term 4 has already been a sunny term and we have been hit

with high temperatures earlier than usual and this seems to

be a trend in Sydney. Because we do not want the children

getting sunburnt and possibly getting skin cancer later in

life, we have a ‘No hat, play in the shade’ policy. We are

having a crackdown on the students wearing hats in the

playground. If students are playing on the grass without a

hat, they will be redirected to play in the shade. We are

having a competition. Every morning, we count the number

of students who are not wearing hats in each class. If each

child has a hat, the class gets 10 points. At the end of term,

the class with the best record of hat wearing will win a class

pizza party. We would also like students to wear the school

hat, available from the uniform shop or at least a navy blue

hat. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, we have

student assistance. Just write a note saying that you can’t

afford a hat at this time and we will supply a hat for your

child. Please everyone, WRITE YOUR CHILD’S NAME on their

clothes and hat.

Holroyd Council has donated some new plants for our

indigenous garden and some trees to plant around the

grounds. Miss Frazier is assisting our Aboriginal students to

plant them this week.

It is a big term this term. It is the final term in primary

school for our Year 6 students. They will be feeling a bit

nervous about stepping into the unknown after being the

kings and queens of the school. The Kindergarten students

now feel quite at home. Most of them can read and write,

something that was a mystery to them at the beginning of

the year. We will have our Orientation Days to welcome a

large number of kindergarten students for 2014, evidence

that our school is growing. Stage 3 have their camp in Week

3. 3F, 3/4P, 3/4G and 4/5F are looking forward to

‘Sculptures by the Sea’ at Bondi on November 7.

As we begin the final term for 2013, I trust that everybody

is settled into effective learning routines. It is an honour to

be the relieving principal for a short time.

Library News

Book club Is due back to school by Thursday 24th October. Please take

money for this to the Library.

Book Intro by Reit 5/6L

This book is titled Once by Morris Gleitzman. It is based on a

true story from the past with some imaginative stuff

happening at the same time.

They story begins with a young Jewish boy named Felix and

his parents, who were book lovers. Felix’s parents realised

there was some trouble in their country so they sent their

son to a catholic orphanage, telling him they would be back

to collect him. Felix stayed at the orphanage for 3 years and

3 months.

One day Adolf Hitler ordered the Nazis to burn all the Jewish

books and take the Jewish people to the death camp. They

tricked them telling them they were going to a farm to work.

When Felix heard this he was scared for his parents book

shop and ran away to tell them. He imagined they would be

taking the books off the shelves.

Before he reached his house he found a house that was

empty, he went inside looking for food. He heard gun shots

and thought they must be hunting rabbits. He took some of

their food and started walking again.

When he got to his house there was no one there, he went

inside it was empty, he was terrified……

This book can be found in the library, there are three others

in this series. ‘Then’,’ Now’ and ‘After’.

How to improve your child’s listening skills

Active listening skills facilitate effective communication

throughout life. Children often struggle with listening skills,

missing key pieces of information in the communication

process. Helping your child improve their listening skills at

an early age benefits them in school and in social relation-

ships. Listening skills also help a child develop reading skills,

particularly when they hear a story as they see the words on

the page. Everyday activities give kids a chance to see and

practice effective listening skills.

Step 1

Model active listening skills by looking at your child when

they talk to you. Repeat back what your child is saying to

ensure that you understand. Modeling proper listening gives

your child a reference.

Step 2

Ask your child to repeat what you said. For example, if you

asked him to pick up his dirty laundry, put it in the hamper

and wash his hands for dinner, have him repeat back the

three things he needs to do. This gives him a chance to

process what he was told and allows you to make sure he is

listening to you.

Step 3

Have conversations with your child about topics that inter-

est her. This gives her a chance to engage in a real conver-

sation, practicing both speaking and listening. The conver-

sation has a purpose for the child since it relates to a topic

she enjoys.

Step 4

Practice following directions in the form of a game. Give

your child a direction, and have him follow it. Make the

directions entertaining so the activity is enjoyable. You

might have him make a funny face, spin in a circle or walk

like a duck. Move to more advanced verbal directions, such

as building a tower with blocks using a specific pattern.

Step 5

Read stories to your child, asking her to predict what will

happen next. The prediction requires her to listen to the

details to make a logical guess. After reading the story, ask

the child to retell the story in her own words. Another op-

tion is to have her act out the story with toys as you read it.

This makes your child listen to the words and understand

what the words mean.

Step 6

Borrow audio tapes of kids' books from the library.

Let your child listen to the tapes as he follows along in the

story.

Step 7

Tell a story together as a group. One person starts the sto-

ry, adding a few sentences. Each person adds a few more

sentences to the story. BabyCenter suggests this activity

because the participants have to listen to what everyone

else says in order to add something to the story that makes

sense.

Step 8

Cook with your child. BabyCenter recommends reading the

recipe to the child, having her listen to and follow each

step in order to complete the recipe correctly.
