Principal’s Message
2016 has been another great year for Beresford Road Public
School. We have continued to grow and improve the learning
outcomes for children. The biggest change for us this year
has definitely been the staff training and class
implementation of ‘Learning Intentions’ and ‘Success Criteria’
in all classrooms. Based on strong educational research and
working as a learning community of schools (Beresford Road
PS, Girraween PS, Hilltop Road PS, Greystanes HS and
Greystanes PS), we have enhanced the learning of students
across our community and into high school. Students are
now able to articulate what they are learning and know how
to be successful learners. Mrs Pearson has a great 5 minute
video that she would love to share with you if you are
interested.
We have continued to improve student access to technology
through the purchase of a class set of Chromebook
computers and a wonderful 3D printer. Watching 3/4E
develop their gears and cogs using the 3D printer for their
artwork for Art in the Dark was fantastic as was 5/6L printing
3D name tags for all our new 2017 kinder students. The
school has also funded student access to IXL maths, literacy
planet, Worldbook and Wushka.
I was very impressed once again with the Art in the Dark art
show that we held in Education Week. The quality of the
work that all students presented was very good, as were the
dance and musical items, and the level of community
attendance was extremely pleasing. We continue to excel in
all sporting arenas, with championships in a number of PSSA
sports and student representation at both regional and state
levels.
Thank you for tolerating the heat during the presentation day
assembly today but it is important to share the successes of
these students. Congratulations to all the winners and our
new school captains. This might be the last year we can have
a K-6 presentation assembly in the high school hall due to our
increasing student numbers – it was a bit of a squeeze this
year. The school will look at this next year.
We are expecting to begin 2017 with 625 students in 27
classes. All current teachers will remain and we have added
Daniel Tang as the new teacher for the 27th class. He is very
excited about the position and we look forward to
welcoming him to BRPS in 2017.
The current school canteen lease expires at the end of the
year. Farideh Moussa has been running the school canteen
here for the last 5 years and has done a good job. The kids
are always served in a happy and friendly way and the food
is well prepared. The tender process has taken place in term
four this year with Healthy Canteens Australia the successful
applicants. They come highly recommended from a number
of local schools including Girraween and Westmead. I think
you will be happy with their prices, healthy food options,
meal deals and online ordering.
Have a safe and happy holiday, Merry Christmas, and I look
forward to seeing everyone return for 2017

New Report
Today your child should receive their report. It is quite
different to last semester’s report. It was changed in
response to parents expressing concern that it didn’t tell
them what they really wanted to know. Parents told me that
they were confused about what ‘SOUND’ meant. They told
me that they didn’t want to just hear a list of things they did
this term. They wanted to know that the teacher really knew
their child. Whilst the effort ticks have gone, hopefully you
will be able to find out about your child’s attitude to learning
in the larger general comment. Some children, for example,
may have a great eye for detail in art for example while
another child may be so worried that their work is not good
that they never complete anything. It can be difficult for
teachers to judge the effort that a child puts into an activity.
Some children find things easy, while others require intense
concentration and still don’t get things finished. We added a
work sample so you could see changes over time. For some
children, the work sample was not reflective of their usual
ability. Some teachers had difficulty in the scanning process
which we will try to rectify next time.
We would really like to know what you think about our new
report. Please email me to let me know what you think
about the changes. [email protected]. Please
let me know which class your child or children are in so I can
get feedback to teachers. It can just be a sentence or two. I
started making a survey, but sometimes it doesn’t give you a
chance to say what you really want to say.
Thanks,
Kaye Pearson
